He was friendly, on point with timing, and knew the menu and cocktail list inside and out, so much so that it's worth specifically requesting Sterling when you make a reservation or when you're seated. He even recommended my (and his) favorite specialty cocktail, which ended up being the perfect drink to go with the meal. I ordered the Delmonico King Cut steak and it came out a perfect medium rare--flavorful, tender, and cooked exactly as requested. My wife's parmesan‑crusted chicken was also fantastic, with great seasoning and a really nice crisp on the outside. The specialty cocktails were fun and inventive, which fits perfectly with their strong craft cocktail program and full bar. If you can, definitely request to sit in the "Chester Room"; it's a very cozy and quaint dining area, and the fireplace during these chilly winter months makes it feel extra warm and inviting. Between the perfectly cooked steak, my wife's excellent chicken, the creative cocktails, the cozy Chester Room, and especially the top‑tier service from our server, this was an easy 5‑star experience.

Do not waste your time going here ~ be warned…read more We went for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon around 1:00 pm. It was not crowded, almost empty. In the dining room, where we were seated, there was our table of two, another table of two and a table of three. The other two tables were at the end of their meals. Our server, who also greeted us at the door, was more interested in looking at his smart phone than seating us. He gave us the dinner menus, instead of lunch menus which was a sign of things to come. It was almost 1/2 hour before the server returned to take our order. At this point the two other tables of patrons were gone. We ordered a Wedge salad and French onion soup for starters. The Wedge salad was perfect, except for the large piece of Italian bread served with it which was charred, but edible out of desperation. The onion soup was TASTELESS and the cheese on the top of it was BURNT, blackened to the extent there was no mistaking whoever prepared it was not paying attention when they made it and had no problem sending it out to be served burnt. Against my better judgment, and further desperation, I ate the tasteless, burnt soup. For the main course, we had a turkey club and mussels Fra Diavolo. The "fra diavolo" sauce had no kick to it at all. They might as well have called the dish mussels in marinara sauce. The turkey club, which was ordered with no mayonnaise, had almost NO turkey on it ~ no exaggeration ~ there was only one thin slice of turkey on it! I should have sent it back immediately, but I took my first bite and then signaled for the iPhone obsessed server. I asked him for the manager and he panicked as if he did something wrong. I assured him the problem was with the food, although I should have reported him for his inability to put his iPhone down and do his job. The manager came to our table asking how she could help and I showed her the sandwich pointing to the lack of turkey. She agreed that the club sandwich was very much in need of its main ingredient -- turkey. She apologized and took my plate and said she would order me another. About 20 minutes later, our iPhone loving server returned with a new turkey club with the appropriate amount of turkey on it. We were offered no compensation for the first embarrassed turkey club which was almost sans turkey, not that we were looking for some type of compensation, but any type of gesture would have been nice. It has been years since we last ate at the Public House since moving from the area, but this will definitely be our last visit. I wouldn't recommend the place to anyone, even if the food were free. Be forewarned...you would have a more satisfying meal from a fast food restaurant!

If you have not been here before, I sadly but strongly advise against going. My parents moved to Central NJ in the 70s and started going to Sammy's for all special occasions. It was always expensive but fun. They loved the speakeasy vibe, the cocktail lounge, and the food. My parents are now retired, and I no longer live in the area, so I wanted to treat them last night. We arrived and placed our usual order at the hostess station: vodka pasta and t-bone for 3. The imperiousness of the hostess and co-owner (I believe MaryAnn, who earned such descriptors as "nasty" and "rude" in previous reviews) was to be expected; after all, Sammy's doesn't even bother to have a sign outside. It's a snobby place that expects you to know what you want when you arrive, and if you don't directly ask to see the menu, you only see the food prices on the check. We knew the drill and ignored the background hauteur. I wanted my parents to enjoy themselves! In fact, we witnessed exactly that customer disdain during our meal. While we were savoring the delicious food and wine more slowly than the couple at the next table, we couldn't help but witness two experiences in particular. One: the man's lobster bib fell to the floor after he ate, and MaryAnn, who watches the dining room like a savage hawk, swept in, scowled, picked it up silently, and swooped away. The woman and I had a sardonic laugh about this. Two: when she went to pay the bill, her gold AmEx card was declined. She was stunned and uncomprehending; she questioned the young male server but then just rolled her eyes and gave a second card that worked. Her attitude was contemptuous but dismissive. (To me: "you have a $300 tab, and you deal with this?") Imagine my surprise and annoyance when the same thing happened to me. My card was declined, and I not only expressed surprise but asked the server to run it again. (NB: there's no issue with this card.) It was declined again, and I mentioned to the server that it also happened to the next table and surely to others as well. The second card was accepted. This was annoying, but I was also prepared to be contemptuous and dismissive like our table neighbors. However, before we could leave, MaryAnn came over to scold and "correct" me. She took issue with my suggestion that it happened to other customers that night. She told me: "it only happened to your tables." I could not believe she came over simply to be combative! I said it seems to be a problem with their machine. She argued with that, in fact telling me (and I'm paraphrasing here) that they had previously contacted the company, which informed them it was not their problem but the customers' banks. I said in this case it was two different banks (AmEx and Citibank), but she continued to argue until I thought: what's going on here? Indeed, I WAS extrapolating that other customers had had the same issue, and her argument proved me right. Nitpicking that it hadn't happened that particular night before our two tables seemed a foolish fight to start when our tab was over $400 for three. Why come over just to quarrel as I was about to leave the tip and be on our way? Alas, as I've read other reviews, I see many complaints about hostile encounters with this unpleasant woman, which understandably repel even affluent long-term local customers. As much as my parents and I enjoyed our meal, we all left angry. A terrible end to a special meal. If you must risk severe owner rudeness, at least bring cash. LOTS of it. We won't be back for another round with her.

When you walk in they take your order (reminiscent of Sizzlers) then they send you down stairs to the bar (Laura was the highlight as a bartender, sweet and attentive). Crack linoleum, stained drop ceiling....horrible. They call your name and you proceed back upstairs to the "dinning room", which reminded of a old college cafeteria, again horrible. The salad is served brown with a red vinegrette....pathetic. The Scampi is nothing special, I've whipped up better in 10 minutes at home. They call the strip steak "dry aged"....I seriously doubt it. I ate only a third of it, hoping to bring the rest home to my dogs. This was impossible because "John", our waiter, threw the bone, which had plenty of meat on it, in the garbage. We didn't bother with desert. $204. I have NO idea how this place has been in business for all these years. A horrible dinning experience.

Food: I ordered their Cajun chicken quesadillas, which not only felt strangely authentic because of the style preparation, but it's the first time I've ever seen someone season the tortilla which I loved. Aesthetic: lots of seating both inside and outside, pretty simple set up. Service: having multiple people come to the table and help grab things, give us water, and provide us with the food was nice. Felt like a well oiled machine.

Our regular "go to" places are either Don Jose in Netcong, or the Chapala Grill in Hopatcong. Both are great, with the latter being the upscale and expensive option. On this day, we tried Fresco as we had heard a lot about it. Upon arrival, I was immediately disappointed that we didn't bring our little Chihuahua, as it is pet friendly and a family of four were dining with their chi resting in a stroller on the outside porch seating area. Should we return, we will bring ours. We started with a Queso appetizer ($11.95), and of course they brought the usual complimentary chips and salsa. I liked that they had three sauces to offer, one being more of a pico with fresh chunks of onion and tomatoes, the other two thin sauces with one of them being hot. Very hot, I liked it. The chips were interesting, not your usual larger thin chips, these were thicker and smaller wedge style. They were okay, but I prefer the traditional. I"m not certain I can confirm that they were baked on premises, they didn't seem to have that quality. The queso dip was quite good, thick and creamy when hot, and spread nicely over the tortillas that accompanied it. This establishment uses corn tortillas, probably because I believe they are more authentic to true Mexican cuisine. My own personal preference is flour tortillas for both flavor and texture. As a side note, before anything arrived, our server placed a dish on our table and walked away. It looked to be some type of avocado dish, but wasn't sure. I didn't pay full attention to what my wife ordered, so I dug in and grabbed a piece. It was then that the waiter came back, I think he realized that he put the wrong dish on the table, and took it away noting a piece missing. They brought it back to the kitchen area, NOT to the other table....but still. In my 35 years of dining experience, they should have owned that error and simply left it as it was touched by a customer. To take it back and (perhaps) throw it away was bad form, in my opinion. Our meals arrived quickly, she ordered a chimichanga ($15.95) and I ordered the steak fajitas ($21.95). I should have known what to expect when the server never asked me how I like my steak, which is a consistent question in the other two venues I referenced earlier. The strips of meat were very thin, and very well done as opposed to the medium rare I prefer. Accompanied by traditional onions and peppers, but they were not served on a sizzling plate which is always a nice presentation. They were surrounded by a more than ample serving of yellow rice and refried beans. Again, corn tortillas were presented and not enough of them. They never include enough to fully stock the other ingredients provided. My wife didn't care for her chimi, and I didn't either as I reheated it at home the next day. She asked for it sans beans, so perhaps that was the issue but it was overly stuffed with way too much rice to meat ratio, and the meat included was rather bland ground beef. The outside should have shown evidence of being deep fried, but it was softer and the color was off...like it never saw the oil. That's what a Chimi is, basically...a deep fried burrito. It was off, not a great first representation. The young servers were just great, no complaints about service beyond removing that one incorrect dish. They do offer a better price for cash, but it's really a removal of the service charge placed on the bill should you use a card. Jury is out if we would return. If we did, I would bring my dog and a pack of flour tortillas! It is BYOB, which is nice.
