After reading an article titled "13 Lesser Known Restaurants in NJ That Serve Great Food" and seeing Sammy's listed as one of them, my wife and I decided to give it a try. In these days of limited capacity while we're trying to get through a pandemic, the restaurant is clearly different than what it's been and will be again. Normally, there's no reservations and the line is down the road. When you walk in, you go to the counter and order your dinner. In the past, you would then go downstairs to the bar and some video games. Now, you get seated immediately. Steaks are what Sammy's is known for and we each ordered 10oz filets. The meals come with a salad, fries, coffee and dessert. We started off with a mozzarella and red pepper appetizer with glasses of wine. All the food tasted fine and was enjoyable. Was it the best filet I've had? No, but it was good and the meal was fun. Sammy's opened in Mendham in 1933 and is a former speakeasy. Definitely worth a try for a unique dining experience!

I wish I could express how much I genuinely enjoyed this place and the experience. You order as soon as you walk in and the hostess realized we weren't regulars and took a few extra minutes to guide us through the whole experience. We placed our order and headed to the bar in the basement, where we played arcade games and had a drink. Once we were called back up, we were greeted with a yummy salad, followed by our app of penne a la vodka. It was WONDERFUL. I mean we destroyed that plate it was so good. For entrees I had the shrimp scampi and my boyfriend had the strip. Both were cooked to perfection. Prices were more reasonable than a normal steakhouse and we both walked out fully satisfied.

Solid local spot!! Was so glad to attend a birthday party here, I find the ambience to be no frills and the food quality excellent !! We started with famous shrimp scampi- a must order! The penne vodka, also delicious and each ordered our own main. I had the filet cooked MR- perfect and asked for a side of carmelozaed onions. For the table we got steamed broccoli and French fries. The rice pudding was also delicious. I do like this spot- it's a classic for those of us who grew up in town.

Read an article about this place and wanted to try it. You order upon walking in, then you go downstairs to what feels like a church basement they turned into a bar and decked out with 80s/90s arcade games. Wait was really long but drinks downstairs were good and strong. Filet mignon was perfect, as were the salads and small apps. Only downsides were the wait and that one of the steaks came out a bit too well done (ordered it mid-rare), but it was a fun and idiosyncratic place I'd return to again. Servers were friendly.

Came here last night and it was a wonderful experience as always. Down stairs is closed currently but they do seat a few tables down there. Came with a party of 4, I opted for double cut pork chops, 2 others got the filet mignon and one got the shrimp scampi. Vegetable for the night was broccoli and they also had a mozzarella and peppers appetizer. Incredible portions, perfectly cooked meat and delicious desserts. All waiters and staff wearing their mask properly, tables generously spaced out.

No frills place for great steak and sides. The prices are very reasonable for a steak joint in 2022.

Ask the Community - Sammy's Ye Old Cider Mill

Hi, I'm looking to buy a gift certificate for a friend and his family, that's a family of two children and two adults, how much of a gift should I get for dinner at Sammy's ?…

They don't really have a kids menu and they tack on a lot of money for kids who just order an appetizer. I would say if you don't already know your friends like this place I would pick another place. We went with my daughter the other day and it… Read more

The pick up process was smooth and they were right on time when we arrived. Everything is carefully packaged with clear instructions about how to reheat. I love the sweet potato casserole with the marshmallows on top, but not everyone in my family likes marshmallows, so it was nice that the marshmallows were packaged separately, so we prepared some of the sweet potatoes with them and some without. I'm very particular about brussels sprouts and these were outstanding. I loved the mustard seeds in them. I highly recommend Black Horse Inn for a take home Thanksgiving meal.

The restaurant is beautifully renovated and maintains it's rustic charm despite the modern touches. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food was so-so; we really were hoping to be blown away by the menu. We ordered the tuna tartare and French onion soup for appetizers. Entrees ordered were steak frites and marinated grilled shrimp. I was surprised at the way the tuna tartare was presented - it felt more like a mushy salad. Also, the tzatziki that was part of the marinated grilled shrimp did not resemble or taste like traditional tzatziki. The shrimp, however, was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. We definitely appreciated the history of the place and that was an experience to remember.

The bartender guided us on the drink options and offered suggestions, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I ordered the spicy margarita, which was delicious. We then were seated up stairs (the decor and ambiance of this place is beautiful!). They provide complimentary chips and salsa (my fav). The owner came by to apologize for the wait, which really wasn't terrible, and offered us two free tacos on the house. They were delicious! One chicken and one beef. We ordered the toca vez salad and plantain and coconut shrimp sushi (UNREAL!). Both were delicious but the plantain starter was heavenly. I ordered the scallop risotto. Delicious! My husband ordered the salmon and it was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cooked to perfection!! The waitress knew we were celebrating and provided up to complimentary champagnes and ice cream. One of the best dining experiences. Can't wait to come back to try more!

Shrimp tacos - tender seasoned shrimp served on fresh corn tortillas and a spicy sauce on the side were excellent. The steaks - one medium rare ribeye was surprisingly lean, but tender and flavorful and was beautifully cooked. The filet ordered medium came somewhere between rare and medium rare. But it was tender as expected (it is prime filet after all). Asparagus side was phenomenal. Shoestring fries came out crisp but oddly room temp. Sea bass dish was good, but the menu description failed to adequately describe the ingredients. The steaks were typical upscale steakhouse, but I guess I was hoping for a more Mexican-inspired flare when it came to the sauces or sides. Service was well-coordinated and available and friendly and efficient. The area that was lacking was the knowledge of the food. No one knew what was in the sauce that accompanied the shrimp tacos. It's okay not to know perhaps, but say I don't know and go find out. Also requested information about the dishes was lacking, particularly when it came to food allergies which one person in our party had.

He was friendly, on point with timing, and knew the menu and cocktail list inside and out, so much so that it's worth specifically requesting Sterling when you make a reservation or when you're seated. He even recommended my (and his) favorite specialty cocktail, which ended up being the perfect drink to go with the meal. I ordered the Delmonico King Cut steak and it came out a perfect medium rare--flavorful, tender, and cooked exactly as requested. My wife's parmesan‑crusted chicken was also fantastic, with great seasoning and a really nice crisp on the outside. The specialty cocktails were fun and inventive, which fits perfectly with their strong craft cocktail program and full bar. If you can, definitely request to sit in the "Chester Room"; it's a very cozy and quaint dining area, and the fireplace during these chilly winter months makes it feel extra warm and inviting. Between the perfectly cooked steak, my wife's excellent chicken, the creative cocktails, the cozy Chester Room, and especially the top‑tier service from our server, this was an easy 5‑star experience.

Do not waste your time going here ~ be warned…read more We went for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon around 1:00 pm. It was not crowded, almost empty. In the dining room, where we were seated, there was our table of two, another table of two and a table of three. The other two tables were at the end of their meals. Our server, who also greeted us at the door, was more interested in looking at his smart phone than seating us. He gave us the dinner menus, instead of lunch menus which was a sign of things to come. It was almost 1/2 hour before the server returned to take our order. At this point the two other tables of patrons were gone. We ordered a Wedge salad and French onion soup for starters. The Wedge salad was perfect, except for the large piece of Italian bread served with it which was charred, but edible out of desperation. The onion soup was TASTELESS and the cheese on the top of it was BURNT, blackened to the extent there was no mistaking whoever prepared it was not paying attention when they made it and had no problem sending it out to be served burnt. Against my better judgment, and further desperation, I ate the tasteless, burnt soup. For the main course, we had a turkey club and mussels Fra Diavolo. The "fra diavolo" sauce had no kick to it at all. They might as well have called the dish mussels in marinara sauce. The turkey club, which was ordered with no mayonnaise, had almost NO turkey on it ~ no exaggeration ~ there was only one thin slice of turkey on it! I should have sent it back immediately, but I took my first bite and then signaled for the iPhone obsessed server. I asked him for the manager and he panicked as if he did something wrong. I assured him the problem was with the food, although I should have reported him for his inability to put his iPhone down and do his job. The manager came to our table asking how she could help and I showed her the sandwich pointing to the lack of turkey. She agreed that the club sandwich was very much in need of its main ingredient -- turkey. She apologized and took my plate and said she would order me another. About 20 minutes later, our iPhone loving server returned with a new turkey club with the appropriate amount of turkey on it. We were offered no compensation for the first embarrassed turkey club which was almost sans turkey, not that we were looking for some type of compensation, but any type of gesture would have been nice. It has been years since we last ate at the Public House since moving from the area, but this will definitely be our last visit. I wouldn't recommend the place to anyone, even if the food were free. Be forewarned...you would have a more satisfying meal from a fast food restaurant!
