As two people from San Diego, we're pretty picky about Mexican food -- and Monte Alban absolutely delivered. We started with the Queso Fundido, which was rich, flavorful, and the perfect appetizer. The shrimp tacos were fresh and packed with flavor, and the cheese enchiladas tasted authentic and comforting in all the right ways. The service was fantastic from start to finish, and the staff made us feel genuinely welcome. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, which honestly adds to the charm, but definitely try to get there early when you can because it fills up fast. I am updating my previous review from EIGHT YEARS AGO. I can't believe it's been that long. Anyways, I am up in NY from TX visiting a friend and we came here for her birthday lunch. It was around 11:40 on a Friday and there were only a handful of other tables that were occupied, thus, we got seated right away. Hot chips and salsa were brought over while we looked over the digital menu. P.S. Mask policy during late Covid pandemic was "do whatever you feel comfortable with" and that was a bonus in our book. My friend ordered the Speedy Gonzales lunch special, my son got the taco combo lunch special (despite only eating one single taco of it... so basically I could have ordered him a single taco for $2.99 and saved the $) and I got the Sopa de pollo lunch special. We all greatly enjoyed our meals. I personally LOVEDDD the soup. It was such a huge bowl of deliciousness. Light broth, shredded chicken, rice, pico de Gallo and sliced avocado. It was so big, I couldn't even finish it and now that I am writing this, I wish I could have some more! My stomach is literally growling. Our server was friendly and prompt. From waits (a lot) longer than promised to miserable servers and bartenders to the most depressing takeout tacos I have ever experienced...two stars it is. The good: the interior is vibrant. If you're looking for a fun excursion for the evening, sitting at the bar at like 4:15 right when it opens might be a good option for you to enjoy a large, syrupy margarita in a festive environment. I wouldn't come much later than that since the bar is only 6-8 seats and the space becomes utterly packed. Festive at 4:15, a memoir by Megan. ANYWAYS... The food has missed the mark every single time for me (store bought corn tortillas, no diversity in flavor), but most especially in my takeout last night. Did you know if you order $13 tacos for takeout, not only can you not mix and match your protein, but the tacos are literally just 6 corn tortillas topped with chicken? Literally nothing else. A bare ass depressing taco experience that I just stared at for a few minutes before covering with the complimentary salsa and hoping for the best. Even if you were trying to make the chicken the star of the plate (not the point of a taco), it has to be flavorful, yummy chicken...which is not the case at Monte Alban. After three or four visits to this location, I think it is safe to say I have given the benefit of the doubt, and am happy to never return. read more

Oh Monte Alban, my first Mexican restaurant experience growing up so it's super nostalgic. I couldn't wait to go here with my fiancé who has never been! Chips and salsa were amazing as always, we split the poncho special which is chicken with shrimp, all the goodness and it's amazing to make a little taco with the tortillas they give you on the side. I have been to Monte Albon a couple times before, and I've never really liked it. It had been awhile, but my most recent visit did not change my mind. They start you out with free chips and salsa. The chips were tasteless and seemed stale, and the salsa was really watery. I got a peach margarita for $7.99. It was peach and tasted ok, but it didn't taste like there was any alcohol in it. And with the ice, there was maybe like 10 sips in it. It was definitely a waste of $8. I am vegetarian, and most of their vegetarian option have beans. I hate beans, so it's hard for me to modify some of the things. So I decided to try the Loredo fries. They were ok at best. The fries were all stuck to each other, and the avocado sauce was weird. When you have a plate of fries that are covered in cheese and sour cream, and they're just ok, you know there's a problem. I also got a cheese quesadilla. This was the best part of my meal, although grossly overpriced at $3.99. I didn't take a picture of it, but it even looked sad on the plate. And it didn't even come with anything to dip it in. If it's up to me, I won't be back. If a friend wants to come again, I'll try to make the best of it. I honestly could have had a better meal at Chipotle for $7, rather than the $25 I spent here. read more

My husband and I have been going to Monte Alban for a long time. The food is always consistent and prices are reasonable. I normally get the Pancho's Special or Carne Asada. My husband is vegetarian and there are decent options for him. Their lunch options are a great deal. However, we stopped in earlier this week and had insanely rude service. When we got our bill, I forgot to sign the slip and our waitress, Alondra, came over reeking of weed and looking high af, slammed the receipt down and said "the least you could have done was sign it" with a stank ass attitude. My husband and I have both worked in the food service industry before and are more understanding than most people but her behavior was totally unprofessional and uncalled for. She clearly didn't want to be there and that is not our fault. We kept it classy and left a tip anyway but we will never go back. read more

Things are starting to open up, and for this first time in a LONG time, I went out to eat at a restaurant. Or maybe more accurately, I had snacks and a drink with an old friend. It is so good to start getting back to normal. My friend and I originally wanted to go to another establishment, but they were only taking reservations, so since we were hoping for margaritas, we made our way here to Monte Alban. We had a very friendly waiter, and despite it being odd to interact with people face to face again, we had a nice experience. It's been a while since we ate here. Sat at the bar. Service was quick & friendly. I ordered the enchiladas supremas, which is 4 enchiladas each with a different filling of beef, beans, chicken, cheese. I had the rice with it. My husband had a burrito and rice. Food came out within 20 min of placing our order but it was barely lukewarm and was cold within 5 minutes. I scraped the lettuce and sour cream off mine and only ate part of it, taking the rest home to heat up properly. The tortillas didn't taste cooked, either. I've been reading other reviews here that indicated similar experiences. We didn't want to send it back (I know what happens to good that gets sent back, and it's not pretty, I have a friend who worked in a restaurant). Will NOT be back. Stopped in for dinner last night after a movie. Place was unusually quiet, seated right away, and server promptly appeared to take drink orders. After ordering we munched on chips with fresh salsa which was delicious. Our dinners arrived quickly, were hot, fresh and incredible. Our server checked on us regularly, and checked out us quickly. I usually go to the one on Ridge Road, but this one is a little better as our server made our visit enjoyable by taking such good care of us. Two thumbs up, will definitely be back. Put in dinner order. First dinner plate arrives after 45 minutes. Cold. Waiting for 2nd dinner plate. Second dinner plate arrives 15 minutes later. Colder than first plate. Made scene at bar. Some level of manager approached to shut us up. No. I don't want to wait another hour for more cold food. Handed back 2 full plates of food. Was charged 70 bucks for 2 margaritas and a beer. Reading previous reviews seems like long waits and cold food are standard here. HORRIBLE read more

Our waitress was not easy to communicate with so my friend walked up to the bar and asked the bartender to fix her drink. When we paid our bill she was charged $8 to fix a $10 cocktail! Eating Mexican food in the Eastern US will forever be embodied by the time my Virginia-based father-in-law generously suggested he'd take me to dinner anywhere of my choice. Soon after, I found myself sitting at a molded plastic table consuming Mexican food that made El Pollo Loco's fare look upscale. It was a reminder: the further from Mexico, the worse the Mexican food. I realize that's a vast generalization but there remains a grain of truth even so many years later, so when I causally mentioned my fondness for Mexican food, the friend I was visiting in upstate NY made sure to find me some. Monte Alban excels in ample chips and salsa and very good, friendly service. The food itself is all that it needs to be for its Webster setting. In fairness, we have Mexican restaurants of a similar vein here in Northern California, they're just not generally the places I frequent. I ordered a Steak Fajita Taco Salad ($11.49) and, though the nuances of the steak were buried beneath all of the other ingredients, it was evident that this carne asada was not best in class. Fine, yes, but it had none of the char or flavor of the sort of grilled beef I most enjoy. In general, if you provide enough Mexican-themed ingredients and put them on a plate I'll leave quite full and happy and at this Monte Alban excelled. My plateful, when accompanied by the bounty of good chips, had me registering no complaints. Monte Alban is the type of casual restaurant I might return to if I were in the area, hungry, and craving Mexican food. Whether there's better, more authentic Mexican fare to be found in the area, I'm uncertain, but there's no doubt that they'll satisfy that emptiness that comes from being a temporarily transplanted Californian enduring a possible week without Mexican food. read more

I usually go to the Penfield location, since it's closer to to my house but I decided to check out this location with some friends recently. The decor and ambience of this place is way better than the Penfield location - and so is the food. Free chips and salsa - so good. We also ordered the cheese queso, which was really good. The salsa and chips were even better than the other location, weird. Anyways, my husband and I had the chicken fajitas and steak fajitas - comes with sour cream, lettuce refried beans and rice - all was delicious. The service was also really good, nice and friendly. This is a solid option for Mexican food in Webster. We've been a few times, most recently on a Saturday night for dinner. We waited maybe about 10 minutes for a table--not bad at all! Our waitress, who was very personable, brought chips and salsa immediately upon greeting us. The salsa is tangy and not too spicy, and the chips tasted reasonably fresh. We asked for queso and guacamole to add to our lineup for dips, and both were solid (though nothing to write home about). My fiancé and I both ordered fajitas--I went with the veggie, he opted for steak and chicken. They both came with refried beans and rice. Both sides were cold when the dishes came out, plus the rice was slightly undercooked. I left most of both on the plate. The fajitas themselves were flavorful. The veggie mix contained onions, peppers, mushrooms, and tomatoes with a heavy helping of seasoning. Everything was well cooked and married harmoniously with salsa and guacamole for a yummy meal. For what we got, our final bill was fair. We'll keep coming back here but it's not my favorite Mexican place in Rochester. That superlative goes to La Casa! read more

I was out in the community for work and my field partner and I were looking for a place to grab lunch. We needed quick but also wanted decent food; very much done with fast food. I am not a huge fan of Mexican because I have little tolerance for spicey foods and I have no tolerance for Cilantro. And those both go hand-in-hand with Mexican. I agreed to try it out though! We started with queso and chips. The queso was far superior to any I have ever tried. Perfect combo of cheese and spice. I was pleasantly surprised when I found several menu items that avoided both my hates. I had to debate over items, which never happens. Eventually, I chose a taco bowl and was not disappointed. Very yummy and would definitely satisfy anyone's taco bowl cravings. The server was also great, very tentative and got us on our way quick enough that we didn't push into our work hours.
