Our favorite Tex Mex restaurant recently closed and, to drown our sorrows in margaritas, we decided to give Guacamole a try... and we were not disappointed! There is a very nice indoor dining area, a small bar and a delightful garden patio with more seating than one usually expects to see. The food was fantastic! Fresh ingredients, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Can't wait to try something else from the menu. To top it off our server was delightful. Helpful with suggestions, just the right amount of chatty and very efficient. Hope to see her there on every visit. First time, trying guacamole... Came to celebrate my birthday. Service was fast and friendly. However, we were greeted by an odd odor when we entered... Almost like they forgot to empty a diaper genie out of the bathroom. We were pleasantly surprised to find that they had a happy hour and decided to give it a try and despite the odor. The margaritas were good definitely on the strong side. We also sampled the chips with the trio of dips. The pico did not taste super fresh, but the guacamole and queso were OK... We saw a friend arrive and had a drink, sent to her table. At first they brought it to our table and we redirected them. We were given a thumbs up and assumed she had received it, but when we checked later on in the evening, she said she had not despite it being on our bill. We would have figured this out. Had we still been at the restaurant but we were home by the time we learned this. I loved Guacamole when they were just a hole in the wall place in East Rochester and I LOVE their new place in Penfield. I stopped in to check them out before the craziness of Cinco de Mayo (lol) sat at the bar and enjoyed a house margarita and the trio of dips and chips. Good amount of heat in the queso (but not too much!), light and refreshing pick de Gallo and awesome guacamole. The small bar also serves the restaurant and the bartenders were busy! Friendly service in a cheerful, slightly noisy space. The menu feels very Americanized but the food is still flavorful and fresh. There are a few vegetarian entree options, but they could make the menu even more veggie-friendly - for instance, there's no way to get nachos without meat, and a specific veggie taco option (like mushroom or cauliflower) would be nice. The wife and I had a meeting not too far from Guacamole so we decided to have lunch there. Believe it or not it's been five years since we've been there. We ordered 3 tacos each- they give you choices of hot , medium or mild salsa and various toppings. The pics of the menu show some of those choices. We had the soft corn tacos. This is a little "hole in the wall" type spot. I popped in as I was working in the area. Was happy to see they have salad options as well as tacos and burritos. The set up is similar to Chipotle where the meal is assembled in front of you. They do have a few tables but it was very hot inside. This is more a take-away spot than eat in. We caught a very early bird dinner here before an evening event and got to take advantage of some great specials! We started with the dip trio and house margaritas. The dips and drinks were outstanding! I have a 3 year old likes her kids quesadillas with cheese only and rolled up to look like the ones from Taco Bell. Went to guacamole and this place did not disappoint! Inside is pretty small, but so cutely decorated and homey. They also have a super nice outdoor space. Their happy hour specials are pretty solid and we got those. The queso and the spicy salsa were amazing! They have a lot of good drinks, but they are little on the sweeter side. For entrees we got tacos and a bowl. Both were excellent and I like that you can choose the protein and toppings as well. Everything was super flavorful, especially the meats, the green salsa, and the rice was super fluffy. They also have flan and churros. The service was really good - everyone was friendly and since they have a pretty small menu the food came out SUPER fast. Came in with a friend on a Thursday evening. We were seated in the bar area at the high top tables. After sitting for a moment, we noticed/heard a gaggle of women at the bar being very loud. We were also sitting under a speaker and the music was blasting. I asked the waitress if they could turn it down a bit, and got a look like "are you kidding?" And then said no and walked away. The noise of the women talking and the overhead music made it so we could not even carry on a conversation. We placed our drink orders, hoping the bar crowd would settle down and the loud music was just that song and asked for chips & salsa. We were told they are not provided but can be purchased. She recommended the queso, guacamole, salsa combo for $15. We ordered the salsa and chips combo for $5, as that was what we originally requested. It was strange to be in a Mexican restaurant and not be offered these on the house! The chips and salsa trio was quickly brought to the table. The salsas (3) were tasty and were mild, medium & hot as described. The chips were thick, cold and somewhat stale. Finally, we placed our orders, and my friend asked if pork could be substituted for the chicken in the enchiladas and was told they do not make modifications to their menu.Then I ordered and requested refried beans and was told they are not available. I made the comment, "this is a mexican restaurant and no refried beans?" The waitress asked if she should get the manager. I asked her what for and she said because I didn't seem happy. I stated I was wanting refried beans, and asked if the manager would be able to provide them. She said no, and I asked why I would want the manager then! The waitress wanted to pass a customer on rather than deal with their disappointment which could have been handled with an "I'm sorry" and perhaps an explanation of why the refried beans are not offered. I couldn't be the only customer who came into this mexican restaurant and requested refried beans, could I? The whole experience was surreal. They do not accommodate requests or modifications to their menu!. The push to upsell the "appetizers" was unappreciated as well. The enchiladas (3) were very tasty, however they were accompanied by WHITE rice and black beans, (that tasted like they came out of a can), and both with the absence of seasoning. Needless to say, we were not pleased with our experience or dinner selections. Putting an avacado and a margarita on a sign does not make this a Mexican restaurant, and certainly not authentic as proclaimed. Staff arrogant, food policy is rigid, food underwhelming, ambience in the dining area very cafeteria like, equivalent to a sit down Chipotle with a bar! Super cute and cozy location for any fun night with friends. The margaritas are A+, it's for sure their specialty - you can see most everyone at every table has one. As for food, it is overall good but could improve. We were seated around 7pm on a Friday, and they had already run out of flour taco tortillas, so they gave us corn... but it would have been 10x better if it was flour. The corn tortillas taste very dry and processed, although the meat and toppings inside the taco were excellent and very high quality. Only other caveat is that tacos come in sets of 3s, and they all have to have the same meat, you can't get one taco with chicken, one with pork, one with steak etc. So my friends and I ended up each ordering one kind and splitting them up among us to try the different meats. Met some friends last Friday at Guacamole. Arrived about 6.30 and the place was packed! Granted seating is limited but was a full house. This said, we only waited 15 mins before our group of 6 was seated. Service was great, server checked with us often but not too much that we felt rushed. Food arrived lightening quick after ordering....maybe a little too quick as we didn't have much time to socialize before the food arrived. The food was good, authentic Mexican. I ordered the street tacos with cilantro chicken. I am dairy free so not many toppings for me which caused the tacos to be dry. Others in the group ordered fish tacos, shrimp tacos, enchilada, a rice bowl and tacos. All were happy with their meals. I ordered three conchinita pibil (pork) tacos with chips and a side of guac. The corn tortillas were tasty, and the tacos were filled to capacity. The price is a little high, but you get your money's worth. The chips were tasty - a slight hint of lime added flavor. And the guac was terrific! My hubby went with flour tortillas and he enjoyed them (considering he is partial to his Mexican mother's homemade ones I was surprised he liked it). He was happy he could choose different meats, and enjoyed them all. He also enjoyed the Mexican sodas in bottle! The owner/manager (I'm not sure) was really nice and helpful. I was super excited to see this tacqueria near St John Fisher college, but it's not a place I would frequent after an initial visit. I was lucky enough to be there on Taco Tuesday, where all tacos are just $2. That is a great deal, that you can't beat, but I thought the food was just ok. I tried the carne asada and the carnitas, and had black beans and pinto beans respectively. I added salsa fresca and guacamole to both tacos. Even with all that, the tacos weren't super flavorful. A bigger problem: as far as GF options, you have a choice of flour or corn tortillas for the tacos, which is great. However, since they are warmed on the same equipment, the corn tortillas will be contaminated if you get them warmed up. The staff did not offer any alternative (though there were several, including wrapping to tortilla in foil), so I just got the corn tortillas cold. That makes them pretty inedible, so I wouldn't recommend that approach. It's not a bad taco place, and if you're a fan of Moe's or Chipoltle's, you will be impressed. The fact that I haven't been here until now saddens me because that means I've been missing out on good tacos for too long! If you're looking for a local version of the fast casual vibe you get from the likes of Qdoba / Chipotle, this is it. It's an order at the counter, small place with about 6 or so tables. I've eaten in and grabbed takeout on the go. It's super fast even if coming during lunch rush. They filtered people through quickly. I love having a quick and easy takeout option. When it's Mexican food, that makes me even happier. They offer the expected tacos, bowls, burritos, etc. I often opt for the tacos - you get three in the order. I do wish the corn taco shells could be a little crispier, but they do warm them, which helps bring out their flavor. The meat options are all so good. My favorites are the cochinita pibil and the al pastor (get it with pineapple, cilantro, and onions). Even though some of the toppings are listed on the menu, you can customize each order based on your liking by adding sour cream, cheese, guacamole, salsas, etc. Their chips are crispy so I recommend grabbing an order of that with some guacamole. Plus, it's relatively affordable! The prices are on par with what tacos should be $2-3 max! You can get a filling meal under $10. I will easily make the trip here for a good taco treat if I'm nearby or can reason the trek on my way home from somewhere. Go, you won't be mad about it. read more
