The portions are incredibly generous, and my friend and I were able to split the super nachos platter. We even did half fries and half nachos, which was perfect for sharing. It's self-service with a pager system, so you can grab a seat wherever you'd like. The vibe is casual with plenty of seating. Definitely one of the better Tex-Mex spots in Rochester. read more

I tried this place for Taco Tuesday based on a coworker's recommendation, and unfortunately it was a disappointing experience. The restaurant itself seemed unclean, which immediately made me uneasy. What really turned me off was watching the employee handling food at the counter. He started out wearing gloves, then removed them and continued handling food without washing his hands. At one point, he even wiped his forehead and then kept preparing orders. That's just not acceptable when you're dealing with customers' food. I just kept watching him in disbelief as he had his bare hands all over people's takeout containers and dishes. Yuck. To make matters worse, I was charged an extra $1 just to add cheese and tomatoes to a taco--which I found surprising, since those are pretty standard taco toppings. A few things to note if you are planning on coming here... there's only 5 tables and it's first come first served. Also, there's no servers, so you order from the counter and then grab your food when it's ready. We got lucky that a table happened to leave right as our food was ready but no one came to clean it off or anything. Also there's nowhere to hang up your jackets/purses and it's very dark to the point it's hard to see your food. The food came out fairly quickly on a Thursday night, took about 15 minutes for tacos and super nachos. Also we had no idea that the taco platters came with a side of chips and salsa, but they did! For the nachos you have the option to do tortilla chips, fries or both. We did both and definitely wish we did all fries because that was the best part of it. The carne asada we added on didn't really have any flavor and was very dry. Also the toppings are lumped into corners rather than spread out evenly which made it harder to eat with other people. I ordered the Baja fish taco, Korean beef taco and carne asada. The fish taco was my favorite and definitely glad I got it in a flour tortilla. They forgot my Pico and crème sauce but gave me sides when I asked. The Korean beef taco was really good, but honestly it's better on its own then in a taco shell! The little fried pieces of beef were really good. The carne asada was just too dry and flavorless no matter how much salsa I put on it. Came for Taco Tuesday and had not been in awhile. Usually the service and food here is good, but tonight EVERYTHING was off... Walked in and stood in front of the counter looking at the menu board, the cashier never greeted us or asked how she could help. For a minute I was confused as to whether she was doing something concerning the 6 take out orders that appeared were being assembled on the front counter, because she was just staring down at the register and not making eye contact. I finally realized she must be waiting for us to just give her our order when she looked up and stared at us. We wanted chicharrones but I guess there was a "problem" with them last week, and the girl taking our order asked about if they could be ordered, and the answer was no. We ordereda flaming hot elote bowl; which I never had before, tacos (el pastor, Korean (beef), and a fish taco, and a Cali Burrito. Once we received our order, the food looked really good, however we were sad to find out it didn't taste as nice as it looked. The meat in my beef Korean taco was very tough and didn't taste very good. The Cali burrito had steak as well, so I asked my husband how it was and he said that the meat tasted old and was tough. He had ordered this burrito in the past and he said, "this doesn't taste as good as I remember it". The el pastor taco didn't taste good at all, couldn't even eat it. The pineapple salsa tasted strange and the meat was covered in some type of sauce that I've never had on an el pastor taco anywhere else. The fish taco was mediocre at best, it was a battered piece of fish that was mostly breading. Both our orders came with chips and salsa, we both got mild salsa. The salsa was so thick it was almost gelatinous and didn't have much of a flavor at all. I passed on consuming that as well. The elote bowl was nothing special, even with the flaming hot Cheetos topping it still lacked flavor... We were very disappointed and my husband said he wouldn't be sad if we never came back. Is there anything nicer during a Rochester summer? During Covid, I have limited myself to takeout from my favorite spots. Luckily, the takeout process at OPG is super easy. Put in your order online or by phone (you can even order in advance), call when you arrive, and they will bring your food out to you. As for the food, it's high quality with unique ingredients. I don't know of any other Mexican restaurants doing fried cauliflower in tacos or serving spicy street fruit (try it!). I ordered two Carne Asada and one Baja fish And my daughter ordered the Baja fish bowl and added the shrimp! For my dish the taste was OK I just didn't like that the Carne Asada meat was chopped up into little pieces I prefer if it's going to be Carne Asada to be done in thin strips a lot more flavor a lot better tasting! Also be careful that they add teeny pieces of jalapeño throughout the tacos! I did however enjoy the Baja fish taco and probably should've ordered two of those rather than two of the Carne Asada. The korean beef is so delicious and the chimichanga is a 10/10. I also love the crema--definitely get an extra side for later. The red salsa is extremely hot so beware. Wow, delicious and generous portions. I had three tacos, shrimp, Baja fish and carne asada. The shrimp were so large they keep falling out of the taco. The shrimp were marinated perfectly. Probably my favorite taco. Number two - Baja fish. It was like a fresh fish fry in a taco, HUGE and delicious. Carne asada was marinated perfectly and added avocado and Caja cheese. As I live near Victor, I wish they would speed up the opening of the new location as I might be there every day! I've got to give it to them. The tacos are really good. We had the shrimp and several different beef varieties. They were great. It was outdoor dining only at the time and all food served in takeout containers. I know service can vary and its difficult to get employees right now, but, the staff was not the friendliest. I asked for a cup of tap water and was told no. They said they only sell bottled water. I asked again and was told no. I forgot what the excuse was but they clearly have running water from a tap somewhere in a restaurant. Its not a food truck. Not sure why I wasn't allowed any since I was paying for their food. I don't drink bottled water from non reusable bottles for environmental and wallet reasons. I had to go back out to my car and find my reusable water bottle still in the car from earlier in the day, thankfully it still had some water left. Also they have no high chairs in case anyone else was thinking of bringing a child. I know kids aren't exactly the coolest and probably not the vibe they are looking for, but some adults do have them and may not want to bring them here. read more

We thought this place was in Victor but since it wasn't much farther we made the trip here to Rochester. Everything was really fresh. The service was amazing. They do everything the way we like with fresh salsas and fresh sauces. Good music too. The staff were busy, but still friendly and attentive. They have a small vegetarian menu and they have a pretty extensive taco menu which is what I was after. My daughter tried the taquitos for the first time and loved them. They had an interesting fruit salad that we wanted to try, although it wasn't really our thing. Next time, we'll try Mexican corn. They have some specials that rotate and they have burritos and they even have fish tacos which can be hard to find. Can't wait until they open in Victor. read more

My sister who I consider almost as good of a food critic as me has to me to check this place out for months saying Id love it; because I LOVE Mexican food. I finally have visited! And thank goodness I did! This is now by far my favorite Mexican place in ROC. Their menu isn't huge but they have all the essentials that you need or could want. It is a very small venue, that I am sure they will be outgrowing this year if not in the next couple months. It was a Tuesday when I went but the waitstaff assured it was this packed every night. Although they were super packed, literally wall to wall to wall they are super efficient! My friend and I ordered the quesadilla, carne asada fries and taquitos. And because they have such a great system down with the front and back house it took 15 min to get our food. Now my favorite part - how delicious thew food was! Quesadillas, really good - but nothing too great over other places I have been to. The tequitos - small but bomb one of the best in Rochester and would be the best if they were twice the size for the same price. Now it comes down to the Carne Asada fries - No one in Rochester offers this 1 and if they do no one is even close to being this delicious of quality! I should know this because I have lived in San Diego for 7 years and that was one of my favorite dishes there and that you can't find in any other city. This is a 5 star for sure and I am only expecting it to get better with a bigger space and bigger selection. They are still so new and to be this good so early on is AWESOME and I am a HUGE FAN! Stopped in recently for takeout. This time I ordered the veggie tacos and elote. The elotes is the star of the show. The flavors are just magical and this is an absolute must whenever ordering from Old Pueblo. The tacos were plentiful (3 for $11) and each came with two tortillas, per piece, which was a clever design to prevent the contents of the taco from falling. The cauliflower tacos were really good and I enjoyed them much better than the quesadilla they I had on the first visit. The cauliflower was delicious and offered a refreshing take on a classic veggie taco. The customer service this second time around was lacking a bit. Prior to arrival, I ordered and paid online. Once I got to Old Pueblo, there was a short line (no big deal). However, there was a second young lady sort of standing around not doing much while the guy took all the orders. I waited patiently. Once I reached the front of the line, the cashier told me to hold on a second and turned his back to do something. At that point, I'd blurted out that I had a takeout order - the only one sitting there. He confirmed my name and handed my bag over, meanwhile the young lady had a curious gaze on her face. A little attentiveness with a generous helping of teamwork can go a long way when lines form. Final verdict- Old Pueblo is a solid choice when in the neighborhood. read more

I've tried OPG a few times now and love love love it! Delicious tacos at a reasonable price, and a bunch of other menu options I have yet to test out (Chimi....I am coming for you.) I've eaten in both times, but am pretty sure that takeout will be the plan from here on in. The first time I went it was just too dark and too loud to hear the group, and this past visit (a Friday night) it was bonkers busy and seating anxiety set in for everyone. I think the food makes the experience 100% worth it, and I totally get the vibe they are going for, it just usually isn't what I am looking for when eating dinner out. I would still eat in for lunch - especially at the outside tables during summer months. If you're on the hunt for the best tacos in the city, this is going to be the place to go! I love spending time on Elton/Russel street and love the dedication being put into giving Rochester the same delicious cuisine currently offered in larger cities. read more

I've gotta say, I didn't expect to be this disappointed, seeing as how this place has some really great reviews. But nevertheless, I was. It wasn't even the fact that the place is so crowded at 7:30 on a Saturday night that it's hard to move, or the fact that they don't take reservations and you'll have to hunt for a table like a circling vulture. No, the greatest disappointment here was the food itself. We wanted to try a little bit of everything, but with the priciness of the food, this wasn't very feasible. If you've ever been to Mexico, you see that the price differences between true Mexican food sold in its native country and the gentrified versions in the US are really staggering. It's really mind-blowing, considering the fact that the Americanized versions are rarely ever as good. For the price that we paid for our food here (approx. $40 for 2 tortas, 3 tacos, and 2 bottles of coke), I could've survived off of authentic street tacos in Cancun for at least a week. Alas, I realize this the United States and not Mexico, and it doesn't work like that here. We decided to try the tacos, which are 1 for $4, or 3 for $11. They are pretty tiny, similar to actual Mexican tacos--although blasphemous when you realize they're charging $4 for a single one. We got 2 pastor, and one carne asada. Their use of ingredients was very authentic, with the pastor tacos being served with pineapple, cilantro, a nice drizzle of salsa verde, on top of two tortillas. However, the authenticity stops there. I was not blown away by the flavor, which these were seriously lacking. Along with the tacos, I got a bistec torta. I was very excited about this, because I absolutely love tortas, as they are thick, and have some stiffness to them so it is easy to physically put in your hand and eat. However, this torta was the exact opposite of that. When I tell you the torta (which is the bread), was as soft as white bread....omg. You couldn't even pick it up because it was so soggy and falling apart. You couldn't even call the thing a torta, because it required that you eat it with a fork and knife. On top of this, it ALSO lacked flavor. But wait. There's more. My usual remedy for lack of flavor is to just put a nice layer of hot sauce on the food. Mexico is famous for its habanero hot sauce, which is staggeringly hot. I don't expect the food to be like this, considering we don't all like our food spicy, but at least have some actual hot sauce in the building?! They had something that was labeled as habanero, but it might as well have been some spicy mayo because it was NOT spicy at all. Along with this was some chipotle Tabasco, and considering that Tabasco is made in Louisiana, you're not really doing any justice to traditional Mexican food at all. El Yucateo hot sauce is really cheap, authentic, and you can find it at any Walmart. Or even a house made hot sauce that's actually hot. But please, don't leave us with that bland, boring excuse of a hot sauce that you had the audacity to label as "habanero sauce." You know the feeling when you're full, but the food wasn't that great so you're still left feeling unsatisfied? That was me after this meal. On top of this, they ran out of bottled water (????). They do sell "Mexican cokes" though (at 2.50 a pop), which as you know come in the fancy glass bottles and scream authenticity. However, THEY WERE OUT OF THIS TOO. Instead they sold regular cokes in plastic bottles, at the same price that they would the Mexican cokes. *sighs*. read more

Holy crap! Yum! If I told you how lost I got driving through downtown to get here the first time, you'd laugh at me.  University Avenue turns, and I missed the turn.  Then I tried to turn around, and there was no left turn there.  Anyway, I tell you all this because it was totally worth it!  I love Mexican food, but I usually don't try places if they don't have tofu.  I looked at this menu, and they had vegetarian options that sounded good, so I wanted to try it out. I called ahead because I had heard how busy they are, and that the place is small, and I'm glad I did.  The parking lot is big enough, but it was really crowded, so I'm sure on weekend nights it's packed.  I found a spot with no problem, and my order was ready when I got there.  There was a person in front of me, and there were several people at the tables.  It is really small, so I'd recommend taking it to go if you can. I had ordered the vegetarian torta, and I didn't even notice it on the menu, but that comes with fried cauliflower or mojo vegetables.  I got the fried cauliflower, and it was really good!  I hadn't had a torta before, and the bread was softer than I expected.  I thought it would be harder toasted bread, but it was warm and squishy, and it was really good.  And fried cauliflower rather than tofu was a nice change.  And it came with chips, which I also didn't know ahead of time.  The chips were also really good. My husband got the baja fish Becca bowl.  He doesn't even really like Mexican, and just tolerates it occasionally for me, and he really liked his food, too.  We did both notice that they use whole red and green lettuce in the bowls, which makes them difficult to eat.  Not really a complaint.  Just a comment.  If you're eating this on a date or with a coworker, you're gonna be messy, lol. And the avocado ranch is awesome!  It should come on everything! The sauce that comes with the quesadillas is also amazing! We've also had quesadillas, a vegetarian taco, and I got a vegetarian Becca bowl. My favorite was probably the vegetarian taco with fried cauliflower. And I loved that the quesadillas came with guacamole, pico and lettuce all on that side. That was a meal by itself! I have also modified a lot of what I ordered, and they got it right.  I got the Torta with no onions, I got a Becca bowl with no beans and no peppers and onions, and I got the quesadillas with no peppers and onions, and they got it all right. I love that this feels like a more "upscale" Mexican restaurant, but the prices aren't bad.  The way the food is presented is nicer, and even their take out bag is cute.  I can get a bowl here for the same price as Chipotle, and this place blows Chipotle away!  I'm pretty critical, and I don't think I've ever loved a Mexican place that doesn't have tofu.  This place is on point.  Go get some.  I will be back again for sure. read more

The vibe and atmosphere at the Old Pueblo is comfortable and laid back, and there's plenty of parking close at hand. We sat outside on their patio, which was relaxing and quiet. Service was welcoming and friendly, and the prices were surprisingly low. I saved the best part for last - the food they serve here is completely off the charts! Just to mention a few, the guacamole is delicious, and the quesadilla I had was the best one I've eaten since the start of the Pandemic. I've been waiting for Old Pueblo Grill to open ever since I heard Chef Joe was opening his own Mexican place. OPG is located right next to Glen Edith with a huge parking lot. I've been here twice now, both times on a Saturday. Once for lunch and the other time for dinner. Both times, OPG was busy. The place has beautiful artwork on the wall. There are about 4 high top tables that seats 6 people and 2 tables that seat 4. You can opt to eat right at the counter also. Both times, I had to wait for someone to leave to get a seat. The food does take awhile. I'm not sure how they do their orders but someone who ordered their food after me got theirs first. I got my food before someone who ordered before me. My food was also given to someone else by accident. Ceviche: Loved it! The abundance of shrimp and crab with the was so refreshing. Aqua Fresca: Get it! The special that day was strawberry cucumber which was so refreshing! Tacos: The Korean taco was so flavorful. The fish taco was really good too but it just needs a hint of something else but I can't quite put my finger on it. We ordered 4 other tacos but I they weren't labeled and I can't remember them. Chicken Quesadilla: Must eat! It was so good, I could eat one right now. It came with guacamole and chips. Street Fruit: Meh. I wish their was way more tajin. Some of the fruit was too ripe. We love it and will definitely be adding this into the rotation for Taco Tuesdays! On our first visit we each got an order of 3 tacos. I had the Chili Colorado, Chorizo 'N Potato and Carnitas - all were juicy, flavorful, decadent and I would get them again - though the Chili Colorado, unexpectedly, was my hands down fave for the mouth feel and flavor combos. I will definitely be getting this every time.... My hubby got the Korean, the Carne Asada and the Baja Fish. For him it was a tie between the Korean (that kimchi is killer) and the Baja Fish (lightly battered and just really yum). We actually each ate half of each taco so we were able to each sample 6 different taco combos...I pity people who go there alone because sharing is the THE WAY TO GO. Though I will say, I was stuffed out of my mind after eating 3 tacos, even without the side of chips and guac that I almost insisted we order.... A few notes about the experience: --You order at the register, and when they are busy that means the line extends into the dining area and might snake around....so be patient and pay attention! --Your order number is on your receipt, so after you leave the register, pay attention to them calling out numbers from behind the counter. Don't worry - it won't take long! --Condiments are plentiful: there are hot sauces on the bar/counter that you can 'borrow' and they also have salsa (green and red) in the fridge for you - if they don't offer it just ask. --Seating is communal at high-top tables so don't be shy, and --When you are done, bus your table and clean up your area for the next patrons. Delicious the first time, delicious the second time also but the service and atmosphere was lesser than the visit during their first week. Sampled tacos --chorizo and potatoes was salty and flavorful I like my chorizo with a bit of a crisp and color this was mushy --fish well cooked good sized --carne asada was tender and again flavorful --koren chicken was the winner being spicy and well pickled with kimchi --flying Hawaiian also had a great flavor sweet and heat. The pollo loco torta was something I'd go back for, large pieces of chicken, good left over too. The next visit we split a Seoul man beef burrito: fantastic, spicy, happiness all wrapped up. The disappointing part of the second visit was the staff, there was not much seating left and the best open counter space had someone's garbage in it. We sat for a moment and then someone left a high top... we waited, sat and ate as the two ladies at the registers used down time to chat and check their phones. They didn't wipe the counter that you could see was dirty, didn't clean up the garbage that was left causing other patrons to sit with it. The general dining area was pretty grimy too at 8:00 on a Tuesday, the trash with it's cut out holes had a plethora of food scattered on the top. Another difference was the first week we received salsa with the chips on our trays, a couple weeks later no salsa. I'd go back for the sure deliciousness but maybe take out if the atmosphere stays the same. It was another snowy night in Rochester last week, but that didn't stop the Taco Tuesday crowd at Old Pueblo Grill. It was packed and there was much excitement in air. I was also eager to try the new taco joint in town. My first impression of the physical space was: trendy but cramped. OPG seems to make the most of it, but definitely expect a more "communal" dining experience, with shared tables and potential invasion into your personal space. I really liked the menu signage. It was clear and easy to read. Now to the important part, the food. The tacos were some of the best I've had in Rochester. I would put them right up there with Neno's. The difference being that OPG are more "gringo", but in a good way. You won't find any lengua on the menu, but you will find a Gochujang-rich Korean taco and a "Flyin' Hawaiian" taco. My girlfriend and I ordered 3 tacos each. My favorites were the Al Pastor and the Korean. The Al Pastor was rich with pineapple and the Korean was the perfect balance of Kim chi sour and Gochujang sweet & spicy. The portions are huge. I was stuffed after 3 tacos and my girlfriend was full after 2. Price-wise, 3 tacos for $11 bucks is okay for me, given the size of the tacos. They are on the pricier side, but comparable to any other trendy Mexican restaurant in town. They have a huge menu, with other items such as: bowls, nachos, burritos and tortas. I really liked their horchata and my girlfriend liked her agua fresca. I really liked this spot. The food is good, the portions are generous and the pricing is fair. It will be my go-to Taco Tuesday destination from now on (unless it becomes to crowded). The only downside is that it's a tiny physical space. Truth be told, this intimate experience can also be a plus. There's nothing like cozying up with friends (and strangers?) for some good food & drink (liquor license is on the way). read more
