Great Service, But a West Coast Palate Had Trouble Adjusting My husband and I decided to try Rustic Taco Bar during Canal Days, hoping for a taste of our former home on the West Coast. First off, I want to give a huge shout-out to the staff. The service was truly great--super friendly and attentive, especially considering how busy it was during the festival. We really appreciated how welcoming they were. However, we found the food to be a bit of a culture shock for our palates. We understand there are regional differences, and for us, this was very different from the Mexican food we're used to. The tacos were served on flour tortillas that, since they weren't freshly made, could have really benefited from being heated or toasted on the grill to give them a better texture and taste. The biggest surprise for us was the filling. We've learned that "beef" on the East Coast often means ground beef, which was very odd for us in a taco, as we were expecting carne asada. It brought back memories of childhood taco nights rather than the street tacos we know and love. The salsa was just okay; for us, it was really missing that punch of salt and a fresh squeeze of lime juice that makes a salsa pop. Overall, the people were wonderful, but the food just didn't quite hit the mark for our West Coast tastes. If you're not used to SoCal-style Mexican food, you might enjoy this more than we did. Cool place with a comfy feel that was very busy, which is always a good sign. Our waitress was nice and attentive for how busy it was. The tacos here are unique with a garbage plate taco, steak frites taco among others. They don't skimp on the the size or fillings for the tacos which I guess warrants the higher price per taco. You shouldn't leave hungry which I love. Overall the food was good. I had the steak frites and whiskey barrel bbq taco. Both were very good and my wife had the rustic beer fry(fish) taco and mango marg taco. 2 downsides that pushed me from a 4 to a 3. We ordered the elote corn side dish. It came out as corn on the cob which is not practical for dining out given the amount of toppings. We managed to cut a bunch off and the flavor was great but a mess. The other was a takeout order that we were bringing home for our daughter. It was entirely incorrect and the items we got were about 1/2 the price of what we ordered. We didn't realize until we were home staring in the face of disappointment and refusal to eat what we delivered from our daughter. If you are looking for a unique dining experience I would highly recommend Rustic Taco. Our server was very helpful. She was happy to answer any questions we had about the menu and gave great recommendations. We each ordered two tacos and we were surprised by how large they were. I ordered the 3 B's Taco and Sober Spicy Shrimp Taco. The flavor combinations were strong and delivered exactly what was described in the menu. I was given a 3rd taco because the Spicy Shrimp taco delivered was not double wrapped (hard shell and soft shell) as I ordered it. I thought it was great they corrected this with a free one without me even asking for this. Our table was also given chips and salsa upon arriving. The only aspect I did not enjoy was the restroom. It was very outdated and the stall has a huge gap where you can see inside. I feel the restroom does not match the overall decor and design of the restaurant which is very clean. Great service with a friendly attitude. We have come here twice within a month. Servers are always super accommodating and friendly. Not to mention the margaritas are amazing. I would say the tacos are okay. It depends on which one you get. We came here during canal days with our 8 month old son in a stroller and they were able to find us a spot with him. Definitely recommend this place to eat. We were in Fairport on a canal boat from Erie Canal Adventures ( highly recommend them as well) on our second trip up the canal. Anyhow the food was great , We had a variety of Specialty tacos . steak, chicken, shrimp , lobster and the unique cheeseburger taco.For apps we had chips, salsa, guacamole and beer cheese queso. Chips and salsa come when you sit down Chips were light and crispy. The dips were all fresh and flavorful. Beers, cocktails and ocktails were delicious. I recommend the Mango, strawberry mojito. I tried Rustic Taco Bar at the Roc Holiday Village and got the Rootstock Pork Tacos, which also came with salsa and chips. I loved the salsa, it was fresh and had a hint of heat. The tacos themselves were just okay. The portion size was huge, I was full after just one, so you could definitely split an order (comes with two) with someone. The pork is cooked in Rootstock Original Cider but I unfortunately couldn't really taste any notes of that. The pork itself didn't taste like it had much flavoring at all. The chipotle crema was the majority flavor, which was delicious, but I was hoping for more flavor from the meat, too. They have a lot of creative combos on their menu and I would definitely return to try more. read more

I tried the shrimp, the pina colada, and the fried fish taco. The shrimp was far spicier than expected, and I love spice. The fried fish was very oily and far too large for the taco shell. The pina colada taco combined coconut and cheese and it was all just. Odd. We ordered the beer cheese for our chips as they were out of guacamole and it was grainy and dense. When I did not eat anything the waitress was kind enough to offer another taco. I ordered the lobster taco which turned out to be incredibly delicious, full of lobster, but was $16 alone for just one taco. There was no discount for the tacos I did not eat either. I am understanding that this is a business so I cannot fault them for this decision, but wished there was something done to balance this out. I would not return. What a gem east of Rochester. Located in Lake road just past the monroe/Wayne county line this little spot is serving up some fabulous tacos! All of their meats are spirit infused, using local spirits to complete the proteins. We had a really great weekday dinner at the new rustic taco location in Fairport! We sat at the bar and bartender took our drink and food orders quickly. The bartender was great! It is a really good location right in the village of Fairport and the atmosphere inside is really nice! They give you chips and salsa before you order. The salsa is like pico but with a little spice and it is excellent. But the tacos are even better. My favorite is the sober shrimp. Probably the best tacos around and really unique because of the fusion aspect to it! Everything on the menu is really unique and flavorful. Our first visit to Rustic and, as our expectations weren't too high, we were very pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was significantly updated from the bar that was in the location previously... much brighter and more welcoming. Nice bar area with seating, a dining area and a patio (that could still use a little work but not bad.) The staff was pleasant and efficient without rushing us. The menu is small but offers great choices as long as you like tacos. My wife was very happy with her veggie wino taco and I love my cheeseburger tacos... have an appetite if you're ordering two tacos as they are decent size. The have a small but diverse beer list and a selection of wine based cocktails (not sure if they're working on a full liquor license.) All in all a solid experience and a great addition to Fairport growing entertainment options. We will be back! read more

A food truck came to a location near my work and I decided to try it out. I got the mango margarita chicken tacos and they were so delicious! For 2 tacos, they're very large and filling. This place just came to Fairport and it's the talk of the town among some circles. As they say on their website, they're not authentic Mexican, but the food is good. It's a little pricey, but if you're willing to spend a little extra, you'll get some out of the box tacos. I would recommend the cheeseburger taco as it takes you to another dimension in which you can be both eating a taco and a cheeseburger at the same time. Buyer beware of the margs at this point as they don't have their liquor license, however it looks like in the not too distant future they will. Our waitress was truly electric and went above and beyond to make sure we had a good experience. The ambiance and decore were both A plus when it came down to it. On an unrelated note, I believe someone left a very small bottle of hot sauce on our table. The Craft Cheeseburger Taco's along with the beer cheese dip with freshly made chips and salsa. Everything was delicious! One taco with beer cheese and chips and salsa is enough for one person. Absolutely disappointed in my first and last visit to Rustic Taco! Food was tasteless and old , dry and not one item tasted fresh. Not busy at all on a Saturday afternoon but you had to listen to the voice mail from the business continue to (out loud ) answer phone calls and take messages. The vibe was odd. The menu was small with odd choices for a place names Rustic Taco. The host told us ...it's not really a " Mexican Restaurant " ...I guessed that already when I saw Seafood Bisque on the menu for 13.95. This place felt like it has an identity crisis and is struggling to figure things out. My advise would be while figuring things out at least serve fresh hot food that has some flavor! The food has always been very good... I have the veggie wino tacos when we go. It's about the only vegetarian choice. The food menu is pretty limited, but what they do have is good. My husband got the cheeseburger taco, our 14 year old hot the waffle fries nachos. It is a shareable app, and she really enjoyed it. You get a big portion. The service has been slow each time we went. That's because the server was also the bartender. I'm not knocking them for doing the best they can with a limited number of employees. The restaurant is nice enough. There's plenty of seating, at least for mid afternoon when we've been in. The music was far too loud, though. I found out about Rustic Taco Bar through their food truck at an event recently, and learned that they were just opening up in Fairport- the Craft Cheeseburger taco and the Mango Margarita taco were both so delicious that I had to visit their new location. The location in Fairport is very nice, right on Main St. by the canal- there was live music playing in a gazebo nearby when I visited. I went with a friend and we had to wait for a table, but we sat at the bar to have a drink while we waited and we were called when the table was ready. This time I ordered the Sober Spicy Shrimp taco and the Posh Trash taco- they were both amazing, and huge. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and tender, the Asian-style tasting sauce was great and the crushed honey roasted peanuts brought it up a notch. The biggest problem with this spot is that you can't decide what to order because everything looks amazing. Is it all amazing? YES. We ordered takeout and got the beer queso dip as a starter. You'll just want that as your meal, honestly. Once you start dipping those homemade chips, you just can't stop. The Sober Spicy Shrimp tacos live up to each word in the name. The sauce, spice, and shrimp were done to perfection. The Rootstock Pork tacos were also delightfully sloppy.
