We dined on the rooftop, when the weather was perfect. I hade the spinach salad, with raspberry chipotle dressing and they nailed it. We have been to Montage twice in the last month with a larger group. Both times have been great. Our server last evening was Dorian and she was so well informed on the food menu, as well as beverages. I'd probably pass on the shrimp skewers next time. Poor sauce to shrimp ratio. This is a very nice restaurant in the heart of Cedar Fall's lovely little shopping area. Like most Iowa restaurants, you're best sticking with the incredibly good grilled and broiled meat dishes--they take the whole farm to table thing seriously here when it comes to meat. We came to celebrate an anniversary, which I mentioned when making the reservation. 5 adults, all with entrees at $25+, a terrific goat cheese appetizer, salads, a bottle of mid priced wine--you get where I'm going with this, right? The bill was ka-chinging every time our nice waiter came by. After the entrees are cleared away, the waiter brings out 2 small truffles with candles in them, we all ooh and ahh and say isn't that nice?! And then order 3 desserts. The big old bill comes...AND THEY'VE CHARGED US $4 FOR THE STUPID TRUFFLES. WHICH WE DIDN'T ORDER. WHICH WE THOUGHT WERE A GIFT. Popped in here while traveling, happened to be Feb. 15. We arrived about 15 minutes after they opened and all tables were reserved. We sat at the bar and had a lovely dinner. Sea bass was fabulous! Anyone else get nervous when the menu ranges from steak to seafood to pizza to pasta to Texas brisket tacos? Well. This place is amazing. At least what I ate was! Crab cakes were all crab. No fillers. Sauce was spicy but not over spicy. Steak was done perfect medium rare. Nice garnish. Twice baked Parmesan potatoes. Hot and so fluffy! No room for dessert, sadly. Cocktail menu was full of variety. My cosmo had ice crystals in it. I love that! Great wine selection and you can even order a bottle to go! They also had seasonal items. I really enjoy Montage and suggest it to anyone who wants a nicer meal. I especially suggest you try and get one of the window seats upstairs, overlooking downtown Cedar Falls. It's a beautiful view and very relaxing. Food: Get the seasonal pastas. They never fail to delight. Montage does a very good job of putting together some great seasonal pastas that are flavorful and different from what you're used to. Make sure you try it. They also have a pretty good wine selection and the upstairs lounge area is certainly a nice place to enjoy an evening with a small group of friends. Service: I agree with a few others on here, it could be better. But it really depends on the night and the server. I've had a few very good service experiences here, as well as a few less than favorable ones. Atmosphere: Pretty good but depends on where you are seated and how busy it is. The service here is what really stood out to me. It's great when you can have enjoyable conversation with the bartenders. I tried the famous crusted trout(if I recall). It has a very unique crust made from crispy tortillas, with a smokey chipotle flavoring. Since I had never heard such a thing, I HAD to try it! I enjoyed it thoroughly. One of the best managed restaurants in the area. I've become a huge fan of their steaks and fish options. The sides such as The spicy corn as well as the spicy whipped sweet potatoes are unique and worth the trip alone. I feel the management is very accommodating and welcoming. We go to montage for every special occasion and in between when we want to treat ourselves. The goat cheese torte is my favorite dish in all of downtown. My husband can't not get the hoisin salmon every visit. We love to have drinks and appetizers on the rooftop patio in the summer. Always so nice! read more

Good food, same old menu. I've enjoyed the hoisin salmon as well as several pastas(Thai peanut and some raspberry pasta). From what I understand it has had the same menu since it's opened. Everyone is personable and they remember repeat customers (like I am now) on a first name basis. Traveling through Cedar Falls we had dinner at Montage. The menu offered many tempting choices both for appetizers and for entrees. Unable to decide among entrees we decided to go small plates and ordered several apps to share. From smoky chipotle hummus to shrimp cocktail to crab cakes and black bean corn cakes each dish was delightful. Montage also has a well constructed wine list with new and old world wines at a variety of price points. Service was good although our waitress seemed to still be learning the menu. The food is always amazing and the service is fantastic. Big fan. Get the Iowa Chop. I get that it's only a pork chop but it will be the best pork chop you've ever had. I've generally had pretty good meals here, and for a while, it was our go to business dinner location, so I've had quite a few. The waitstaff is generally eager and friendly, though they occasionally are a tad inexperienced with the menu (there seems to be high server turnover). The food, while not super adventurous, is generally well prepared. The pork chops, steaks, and seafood have never let me down. 2 complaints. First, like Nick said, there hasn't been an update in the menu in years, if ever. I've only lived here a few years, but my understanding is that it is the same menu they opened with. They do have a special most nights which helps this a little. Second, the bread with the goat cheese torta (which is excellent) is always cold (which is nasty). They clearly plate the appetizer early in the day, and just stick it, bread and all, in the fridge. This really doesn't make sense, but they are nice enough to warm the bread if you know to ask. read more

I am baffled by some of the reviews listed here. I have lived in Cedar Falls for 26 years and I have eaten at Montage dozens of times. I have never received an overcooked filet mignon or had anything but the finest service. I also don't understand listing Montage as an Italian restaurant, just because they offer pasta dishes. Here is the lowdown from a local. Montage is the best restaurant in this area. While their menu is not extensive, it offers a nice variety of choices. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing, with an arty decor by local artist Gary Kelley. The meals are consistently excellent and the waitstaff is professional and accommodating. They have a selective, well-chosen wine list. My wife and I will keep eating here regularly, because Montage has earned our business. My favorite meals are the peanut sauce dishes (seafood or chicken), the filet mignon and beef kabobs, the sea bass with tomatillo salsa, and the wonderful slaw salad and Montage potato side dishes.
