Monroe's always gets five stars on a Friday from my boyfriend and I. Dirty Martini 5/5. Fresh bread and oil w balsamic 5/5. My go-to is the Haddock French. His the Chicken Parm. He opted for a fish fry tonight. Equally fantastic. Our server, Allie (best coincidence she has the same name as me!) literally ran when we ordered to put in the Haddock French when there was only one left tonight! Shout out to the Monroes staff that took VERY good care of the Mahogany party tonight. First time there. I haven't had service that great in years. When I tell you the food was excellent it was awesome. I had the lobster mac and cheese, crab cakes, chicken quesadilla. We celebrated my son's birthday they had steak, lamb chops. We had a great time. And my 7 month old granddaughter enjoyed playing in and eating her mash potatoes. The atmosphere was just great. We will be going back soon. To the staff if you keep treating people like they matter they will be back and tell others. You guys get 5 stars for customers service. The food speaks for itself. read more

Last night a group of 7 of us (most of which that work in the restaurant business) had 7pm dinner reservations at Monroes.. Got sat at 7:05pm, great, place was obviously busy, happy they're doing well! Not greeted until after 730pm by a server. At this point we put in everything. Drinks, appetizers, and entrees. We see the server going to other tables around, never checking in on us. Finally at 745 we ask about our drinks and she grabs another server to bring them to us. 8pm - still no food on the table. No server to check back on us. A member of the party goes up to the hostess to ask for a manager. One never comes. There was another lady asking for a manager who stated her and her party had been waiting at a table for 2 hours with no food! 815pm - salads come to the table. The server "did you get your apps yet?" We say no. Her reply "oh they'll be 5 more minutes" how do you know? You didn't know know we hadn't gotten them.. 830pm - still no food. We go back up to the hostess stand and ask for a manager. This time a young female comes up. We ask her "are you the manager?" Her reply "uhh I wish" we asked for a manager, why did this random person get sent? We ended up leaving cash on the table to cover drinks but left without food. On our way out we saw a server with calamari coming our way. But that was only 1/3 appetizers we had ordered. We told her we were leaving and she goes "okay you want your check?" Um no. We wanted food. We ended up going to a restaurant down the street where there was another table that the same thing happened too!! They said they were waiting forever too. I get being busy.. being under staffed. But then don't take that many reservations? Scale back to offer your paying customers a better experience. read more

Two friends and I had dinner at Monroe's the evening of February 21st. We are good friends who look forward to a leisurely get-together once every few months. Our less than stellar experience started as soon as we arrived. We were told that we couldn't be seated until all three of us were at the restaurant. The restaurant was nowhere near capacity and the fact that we had to hang in the foyer until all three of us were there started the evening off in a negative fashion. When we asked the hostess why, we were told it was "company policy." We were not made to feel welcome in any fashion. When were seated after all of us had arrived, we were unhappy with our table. The chair seats were very low, and it would have been very uncomfortable to eat dinner there. We politely asked to be moved to a different table for a more comfortable experience. We were moved with an eye roll and a big sigh from the hostess and her assistant. Another big negative. Our server, Sarah, and her trainee, Abby, were lovely. Personable, engaging, and helpful. We placed our orders and shortly after that received our salads. We were not even halfway through our salads when our server came to the table to ask if there was anything she could clear out of our way for dinner. We told her that we were in no hurry, we were enjoying our salads and our conversation and to please make sure our dinners were not coming out for a while. A few minutes later, still about halfway through our salads, our dinners arrived. We told the person delivering them (who turned out to be the manager, Jeremy), that we had asked for the dinners to be held. We were told he couldn't do anything about that, they were already cooked. After much shuffling of salad plates, our dinners were set on the table. We then had a conversation with Jeremy about our dinner timing requests and how unhappy we were about the apparent disregard for our them. Jeremy had very little compassion or patience for our unhappiness. When we asked when the dinner orders were sent to the chef, he said as soon as the orders were taken, which is a terrible policy, especially in a fine dining establishment. This wasn't a fast-food restaurant. In addition, we had all ordered rare steaks, which should have only taken a few minutes to prepare and should not have been ordered until salads were finished and cleared. Again, while the restaurant had several customers, it was nowhere near capacity. As we sat at the table with our steaks getting cold, having this discussion we received no good answers or consideration from Jeremy. One of us said that we were not looking for anything free, just registering our concerns and he immediately shot back with the fact that they do not give away anything for free. Rude, and severely lacking in customer service. Sadly, while the food was good and the server and her trainer were lovely, none of us will ever go back to Monroe's. This is not an inexpensive restaurant and is clearly thought of as a fine dining establishment. They have a long way to go to live up to that expectation. read more

I have wanted to try this place for a while now, and it was definitely worth the wait! We were brought warm bread rolls with a dipping oil to start. Salads were the appetizer for us and it was delicious; the dressing on it was addicting! I ordered one of their Valentines Day cocktails and I couldn't have been happier about it. Then our dinner came, the Chicken French (as pictured) was outstanding. So tender and juicy! Food was spectacular. Choose this restaurant for our annual family dinner. Dark and warm restaurant that speaks fancy dining. Tis the season for pumpkin spice...they had lots of pumpkin options. I had a pumpkin spice martini, pumpkin white Russian, and pumpkin cheesecake. I was loving it! Ordered the Chicken Milanese which they are known for. Absolutely delicious. Service was great. We ordered many wine bottles and drinks and they always made sure we were filled up. One of the members also ordered a file mingeon which was done to perfection! We arrived on time, were seated promptly for our 7:30pm reservation and the restaurant decor was beautiful ~ for those reasons, I'll give my review a star. It went downhill from there ~ food was average at best, attentiveness of staff was very poor and the cost for the experience was ridiculous. For example, we had been seated for TWO HOURS and were still waiting on our entrees (while other tables who arrived after us were served and leaving) when a 'manager' called out (as he walked by our table) "your food should be out shortly". It was another 20 min before the entrees came, in the meantime our waitress walked by us no less than a dozen times and wouldn't even make eye contact. No apology, no offer to 'make it right', no asking how everything was ... they already knew. I have heard from friends and have seen reviews about poor service and extremely long wait times for food and thought those were just flukes, but I'm guessing it's their standard operating procedure. read more

I was really looking forward to my dinner tonight with my family. Sadly, Monroe's did not deliver. We had 4pm dinner reservations. We were seated timely but it all went downhill from there. Drinks took close to 30 minutes to arrive. Our dinners didn't arrive until close to 7pm! My husband's steak was barely cooked. He couldn't even eat it. The poor waiter did what he could but not once did anyone from management stop at our table. I know we were not the only ones who experienced such poor service. I truly hope management takes the time to evaluate what happened and ensures it doesn't happen again. Had the pleasure of enjoying dinner at Monroes last night as part of a party of 6. We had made reservations and were seated as soon as our full party was there. The service at the bar (while waiting for our party to arrive) was great and the ambiance was warm and inviting. We moved into the back room (I'm not sure that's what it's called) but it was a large room with wonderful lighting and great personality. Our waitress, Kathy, was excellent; extremely knowledgeable and very attentive. She was helpful with recommendations and seemed to check back in with us at all the right times. The appetizers were delicious.... we had the artichokes French, shrimp cocktail and calamari. Not being a calamari person myself, I was told it was top notch. I, however enjoyed the other appetizers tremendously. On to dinner....... Mine was the sea bass and it was probably the best sea bass I've ever had. Cooked perfectly, steaming hot and seasoned just right. Can't wait to come back for this again! Two at the table had different variations of tuna and both cleaned their plates! There were two Italian entrees ordered.... a rigatoni special and a veal Parmesan special and portions were large and both commented that they really enjoyed their meals. Last but not least the lobster macaroni and cheese was also one of the orders and we all managed to get our forks into that one..... epic! Not too cheesy, just creamy enough and she had plenty to take home for another meal! Dessert...... OH MY GOODNESS..... we ordered the two specials, and a sugar cookie type cheesecake, and a Neapolitan, buttercream cake. 6 spoons couldn't devour these quick enough. Both were heavenly!!! Between the bar bill, appetizers, dinner and desserts, this was not an inexpensive evening out, however it was well worth it because everything was thoroughly enjoyed! Worst display of customer service at Monroe's Restaurant. I made reservations for our family at Monroe's Restaurant to celebrate my son's 18th Birthday. The reservation was made for 5 people. We arrived at the restaurant and waited for multiple staff members at the hostess desk to acknowledge me. They never did. (Rude). They did appear disorganized and slightly distracted, but still unacceptable. I finally get their attention. Apparently they made an error and only put our party down for 2 people, clearly an error on their part. I understand, mistakes happen. However, it was the snide tone of the hostess , stating "We don't have room for 5, you will be waiting for a very long time, we haven't even been able to seat our 7pm reservations yet. " (at this time it was 7:45 pm) They were completely overwhelmed and scattered. The hostess didn't care one bit, there was no apology for their mistake, took zero ownership and made no attempt to try and rectify or help in anyway. Just awful. I will never step foot in that establishment again and word of mouth travels fast. Shame on you Monroe's restaurant. You need to do better. read more

A pretty good experience overall, due to COVID we had some issues with a manager about changing tables. But the wait staff was friendly and provided good service. Prices are a little high, but the portions are quite big depending on what you order. I had the Chicken Parmesan with Vodka sauce, it was excellent and I enjoyed every bite until I was beyond full. Went here for Thanksgiving buffet. They charged $55 per person for serve yourself buffet. For some unknown reason, they force a ton of people to wait in the worlds smallest lobby until their appointed time. Then they release dozens and dozens of people into the buffet area all at once. This causes huge lines. Many people complained about how their food was getting cold as they waited up 30-40 min. to get through lines, only to find the meat carving stations out of almost everything pretty much all the time. They finish the clown act by imposing a mandatory 20%+ gratuity on buffer cost + tax. When you get the credit card statement they add insult to injury by adding another line to add a tip. I am grateful to people who work holidays, but our server cleared 2 plates and brought 1 drink. I think the $27 gratuity on $115 check would cover the tip for the buffet and table servers. read more

What is happening at Monroe's? Used to be a go-to place for me and 6 friends. Food was great, service was a bit slow, but they were short on staff and asked us to be patient. No problem. Well, last night was last visit there for all of my group. We went last night for a birthday celebration and It was very disappointing. Service was slow, quite slow, ok we sucked it up. We ordered and when we got our food one of the ladies ordered a salad with salmon, but got chicken instead. The waitress gave her some options and my friend opted for a new salad since she doesn't eat chicken. We started eating, and she did not get her salad until we were done eating. While they continued to say it was on its way, she kept telling them "never mind I don't want it." About 20 or so minutes later she got the salad. We asked that her dinner be deducted from the bill. The waitress said she would check with one of the managers. The waitress came back and said "they called the owner and they said no, so I'm paying for it." We were utterly shocked to say the least. My one friend did not let her pay; she gave her $20. The manager eventually came over to help clean our table that was still full of our dinner dishes, and we asked again about not charging for the meal and she said "oh, we took it off the bill." hmmmmm, we all looked at each other. We said, IF, in fact, that restaurant made that waitress pay for a mistake, we thought, what a terrible way to treat your employees. Also, 4 of us ordered salads. I had the salad Milanese as did another at the table. The plate was at least 5 inches high was greens and a piece of breaded chicken on top. (For some reason, we aren't sure, they brought all of our dressings "on the side." Not sure why.) The plate was stacked so high with greens that we couldn't mix the dressing in nor could we cut the chicken. Why would anyone service a dish like that? It was such a struggle to eat and not enjoyable at all. What a disappointment. We have no issues paying whatever a dish costs, we love good food, but when all you get is maybe maybe two or three bags full of greens and a little piece of chicken? Pretty good Italian, I had their eggplant parm, it was huge!!! And delicious. Recommend for lunch, you get great food, big portions and good prices. Their sauce is pleasing to many different palates, it's not too sweet but not too strong with seasonings either. I don't really like sweet Italian sauces and I found theirs to be pleasing. They have nice large booths, pretty comfy and private, they also have normal table seating which is less intimate. Our service was satisfactory. read more

When we arrived 5 minutes early, hostess was dismissive and said well we can seat you inside right away but it will have to have you wait a little bit sit outside. It was 8:15 and we were still not seated a couple of times we asked what was happening and she did not have a good attitude. Finally we said I don't understand and she said when you make a reservation it's a request it's not a guarantee to sit outside. We ended up leaving due to the terrible attitude. It is with a very heavy heart that I have to give such a low review to what used to be my favorite restaurant. What was once the BEST chicken french I have ever had and told everyone about, has now become a sad disappointment and I will never go back. They used to have a $12 chicken French special on monday nights. 2 pieces of chicken with pasta over escarole and a salad. $12! Awesome deal. And then it went to $14. No big deal. Tonight we went and it was $16 and only a HALF serving. So 1 very small piece of chicken and half the serving of pasta. Mind you, you can order a full serving which is double for $30. So it's not actually a "deal". I ordered our meal and ordered a chicken French with penne to go for my sister... didnt check it before we left, and it was angel hair. My fault I guess!! Not to mention the 2 times we have ordered to go in the past, my husband sat there for over an hour after they said it would be ready and they still messed it up and gave me angel hair instead of penne also. They gave us a gift card to make up for that but after this last time, I'm all set. Not even worth complaining to management because I dont want to go back. We were there for almost 2 hours tonight and our waiter never once came over to ask if our meal was okay and how we were doing. The place was not even busy. And my chicken was so dry I only took 2 bites. I'm going to eat it for lunch tomorrow after it has time to soak up the sauce. This is my FAVORITE chicken French. Service: I came with a large party and we were initially seated at a table butting up to the bar so stools were at our eye height. We requested a different table that took an additional 30 minutes to accommodate. The table was pretty much in the foyer so we were on display while others waited for their table. Our server was very attentive and he did a great job attending to the needs of our party. Our drinks took a long time to come out, the food took even longer, and our bill was even more. The entire experience took over 2.5 hours. Food: Complimentary rolls with seasoned dipping oil helped to stave off hunger as we waited for our meal. I ordered a Strawberry Mule and was unimpressed with the presentation. Come on guys, not even a mint sprig? If you're vegan, the menu provides limited options. I ended up with a portabella burger with no cheese that came on a nice bun with caramelized onions, crispy onions, tomatoes, and what seemed like an entire bottle of balsamic vinegar. The burger was good but the portabella was significantly smaller than the bun and was doused in an excessive amount of balsamic. When looking at the picture you can't even see the mushroom cap and I thought they forget it at first glance. It was hard to get around the tang of the balsamic but I know it would've been a great burger otherwise. Ambience: see above about being seated in front of the door. It was a Wednesday and pretty busy so we got in a lot of people watching time given how long our dining experience lasted. Overall, I probably won't go back. Monroes is my favorite restaurant in all of Rochester. My family and I are frequent customers. I have celiac disease and their gluten free options are endless and taste like "normal" food!! The other reason it was a select favorite were their gluten free rolls were my all time favorite. One of the reasons we had family gatherings there was i felt included. I went there tonight and the waitress notified me they changed the gluten free rolls and they are HORRIBLE. Not sure if this is to cut costs but I have recommended many friends/family here for the bread we can have. Wondering if or when the old rolls will be back as I won't be back until. read more

On 10/5/23 5 of us had a 6:30 reservation. Although portions were unnecessarily large, we did not feel as though we were eating at an upscale restaurant. Wine glass sizes were out of proportion to the wine in them. The people who ate eggplant Parmesan said it was good but not great. The Chicken French lacked flavor and the veal in the Veal Parmigiana was too thick. 3 of us ordered dessert. The carrot cake was the largest I've ever seen. (Among ourselves we decided later it was because the kitchen wanted to get rid of it.)we asked for plates to share it. It was terrible- dense and doughy. No one liked it! I told the waitress and asked her to take it off the bill. She went to check on our request. A while later, another woman came and we explained the problem again. She looked at the cake plate (over 85% was still on the plate. The rest had divided to share). She said that because part of the cake was missing, it was not something she could take off the bill . This was even though we explained and pointed out that except for 5 small bites the missing part was on plates around the table. Again I explained that the cake was inedible! She kept rudely insisting that not enough of the cake was on the plate. Finally, she said she would take $10 off the bill. But ea still quite rude about it and that it was not something they would normally do. We had other concerns about service ... We will never eat there again. read more

We sat at our table for over 30 minutes and not one server came to ask us for our drink order. We had to go inside to get our own drinks. When we asked for a menu inside, we were told by the manager that only dinners were served on the patio. The new policy was we could not just order appetizers. It's Monday night, only half your tables are filled and we cannot get any appetizers for our group of 5! We would've ordered 5-6 appetizers and another round of drinks. I'm glad Monroe's is doing SO well that they don't need to serve customers that are seated at your restaurant! We will never go back again. In February, I wanted to celebrate my birthday with my family(party of 8) at Monroe's. We were there for 3.5 hours. One of the steak dinner ordered as well done was received medium rare. It was made over again because it was still rare. At this point, we ordered the Walnut Chicken and it didn't come out until we were packing up to leave. We were informed the kitchen was undergoing renovations and dinner would be a little so, but 3.5 hours seems extreme. Our bill was approximately $500, which included the steak never taken off the bill, so we had to complain to have it taken off. On August 10th we decided to try the restaurant again to celebrate two birthdays, my son and husband. Our dinner reservation was for 6:30 and we were seated at 6:45 once all guests arrived. We placed our orders at 7:00 pm, the appetizers as well as our dinners. We received our appetizers, two calamari's, of which the two sauce bowls were so big there was very little calamari on the plate. We noticed a table behind us, a party of 12 to 15 people that were seated after us. In addition, to party diagonally from us. They received their appetizers, salad and bread and dinner before us. For some reason they brought out my grandson's dinner, chicken tenders and fries after the appetizers which they should have brought out with all the dinners. Afterwards, the waitress brought my grandson a bowl of melted ice cream and apologized for it. Instead of apologizing for melted ice cream, she should have brought him another bowl of ice cream. We waited for our dinners for over an hour and half (8:30 pm). The presentation of the dinners were nice but were not even hot. At this point, we were thoroughly disappointed to have waited so long for mediocre food. My grandson had to sit and watch us eat our food. Our bill was $382 with $65 gratuity which was not deserved for the service we received. We did not appreciate the 22% gratuity being automatically added on. We should determine gratuity based on the service we received. This is the second time that we have experienced bad service and have spent approximately $400 each visit.I need someone to explain to me how a table of 12 to 15 people who arrived after us was served before us and left before us. When you have dinner at an upscale restaurant and spend $400-$500 you expect top notch service. Each time the service did not meet our expectations! This is unacceptable! read more

Neither had any flavor and the pasta and oil dish was essentially served in a bowl of oil rather than tossed in oil. In spite of having a reservation, they sat us next to a huge group of women loudly celebrating "Trish's 50th" and we could barely hear ourselves think the whole time. The welcome was outstanding, nice size cocktails, well rounded menu, dessert were , wait staff were very courteous and the check was well timed. I've been dying to give this place a try!! Somehow my friend got a birthday reservation a day in advance and the bartender greeted us "earlier comers" with a smile and great banter until the rest of the party arrives. He kind of looked like Steve Aoki and that was a bonus. Fast forward to dinner, he suggested a number of great cocktails that we all lined up to try and didn't regret anything! Then I split lobster macaroni with my friend and we could hardly finish it because it was so good but we had to try the artichoke French too - even better which was a hard feat! The ahi tuna was ordered by our friend and that looked just as amazing. I was reluctant at the beginning because of some reviews when I got here, but things have turned around if there was EVER truly a problem.
