we were visiting from Texas and decided to stop it. The food was ok, we went by the stellar reviews as well because we dont know anything in Albq but it didnt blow my mind. If you are used to Mexican food from Texas and you go up to NM and try it there you will feel that it lacks flavor. I think somehow the flavor of the food gets lost by the time it makes its way up to NM or CO, i dont know why. The service was good, the chips were a bit hard and salsa was ok definitely restaurant made, the sopapillas were the best i have ever had but the food needs improvement. I think people who are jumping for joy for this restaurant have never had Mexican food from Texas. If you are a Texan you wont like it. Although I dont think this is Monroe's fault. I have felt this to be the case everywhere in New Mexico and Colorado. And the locals who have never experienced real Mexican food believe it to be what Mexican food should actually taste like and keep eating it. Maybe they would think Texas mexican food is not that great...who knows? right? read more

Cannot give Monroe's enough stars. I had the enchilada combination plate with blue corn tortillas, an egg on top, and a mix of red and green chile. This plate was to die for. Their salsa and chile was so good, I picked up one of there packages of green chile, red chile, and salsa to give to my parents. They loved it as well. read more

The Place has a good relaxed feel. A lot of Locals were there. The food was fresh and favorable. The Staff were helpful.

Had lunch here today with a large group (youth basketball team in town for a large tournament). Everyone was seated quickly and the food came out quickly too for such a large party. Had the Mexican pizza. Very good and the rest of it looked good too. Would definitely recommend. read more

I'm on a road trip and I was looking for some authentic New Mexican food. Found Monroes on google and decided this would be a good place for lunch. I was half asleep and was really hungry for some food. I ordered the taco fingers and they were tasty. In fact I could eat some more rn. My family said all there food was scrumpdisilomus. Wich is good. read more

Monroe's Restaurant - New Mexican Cuisine Near Me - Albuquerque, New Mexico

This was the first New Mexico type food restaurant that I've been to. When I told the waiter that, he described the type of food it was, the history of it, and gave us samples of each sauce! From the outside the restaurant didn't look too nice but the inside was much nicer. The food was amazing and had a great experience! read more

Really enjoyed our meal. They have a FANTASTIC low carb menu. I had a low carb beef and bean burrito smothered in their red chilli sauce. Tables mates tried chimichanga, enchiladas, sopapilla and spoke highly of them all. read more

I ordered take out here. They were extremely helpful and nice, but I did not care for the food one bit. The green chilies seemed can, the red sauce has dairy in it which is completely unnecessary, the rice was undercooked and the enchiladas looked like a mini corn tortilla rolled with half baked cheese. I would not return here. read more

What a great place. I always take it as a good sign when the ethnicity of the food is reflected by the ethnicity of the patrons, and boy did Monroe's ever seem overrun with New Mexicans! It was like all of ABQ was there, treating each other well and enjoying themselves just like it seems folks around here spend all their time doing... This was certainly reflected in the service my girlfriend and I received. The young gentleman who waited on us was about as nice and helpful as one can be without coming across as strange or pushy. He took great care to make recommendations which he thought would please us, because he totally had us pegged as visitors or new arrivals in town (it's the latter). He told me to go with the special Chile Relleno platter without it feeling like he was upselling me, and he told me to go with both green and red chiles AND honey for my sopapilla, which turned out to be an act of great kindness. Hell, even if it's just the standard local way of eating the awesome things I appreciate his helping me fit in. He made double sure that my girlfriend's food allergies were considered and got every detail right. And the dude even asked if I was one of the local metal bands, which is just awesome. The food too was great. The salsa and chips weren't earth shattering, but both were a cut above generic offerings in most of the country. The relleno was perfectly cooked, crispy and light in a way that must be pretty hard to achieve given that it's a breaded pepper filled with meat and cheese. Not saying it was healthy or anything, but it was freakin delicious. Ditto the sopapilla, in case that wasn't already obvious. The sides of rice and refritos and squash were simple and fresh, and the iced tea was refilled frequently and with great politeness. In short, eat at Monroe's. Danny Meyer didn't create it, Jose Andres ain't behind the line, and Gordon Ramsey isn't telling you about it, and god willing that will always be true. Monroe's is great because it is unmistakably FROM HERE, run by people from here who use produce from here. And that's exactly what it's meant to be. read more

Who gave this place 4 stars??? Tisk! Tisk! Tisk! What a huge let down. The only fresh item was the guacamole. The salsa tasted like the can that the tomatoes came out of. My husband ordered a burrito with rice, re-fried beans, bell peppers and onions, smothered with green chili. The green chilis were canned and they tasted like the can too. I can't believe it! Shame, shame, shame. This is Albuquerque, NM....I didn't know green chili came in cans in Albuquerque. The burrito left a lot to be desired. I had a Monroe's Grill (turkey sandwich with avocado slices and green chili on rye) with a side of onion rings. The rings tasted like they were frozen and my sandwich also had canned green chili on it. We even looked up the address in Yelp to make sure we didn't walk into the wrong place. Unfortunately, we were in the right place. We were totally confused by all the high ratings our brother and sister Yelpers left. Maybe it was just a bad day for Monroe's. One thing that the other ratings did get right was the service is indeed excellent. Good job Monroe's for your quality wait staff. I'll pass and I won't be suggesting this place to anyone. read more

We went to Monroe's last week for a last meal in New Mexico. Although the chili stew was hearty and flavorful, the sopapillas were unacceptable. Their sopapillas were served cold, deflated, and the interior was tough and tasted stale. Others write that Monroe's sopapillas are the best so I was confused as to why they were so inedible. A staple New Mexican restaurant should never have an "off" day for their sopapillas. read more

I haven't been to Monroe's in years. I worked here in college for awhile, and I think I ate enough at that time, that I don't need NM food very often. But, my little sister wanted a burrito, so I thought, "Hey, Monroe's". The food is fine, the service was good. They now have a gluten free menu, which was nice. I had the Carne Adovada with Calabacitas. I enjoyed the Carne, but the Calabacitas weren't very good, they tasted like the oil was off. My little sis liked her bean burrito. So, I would say Monroe's is still fine. read more

Tops in my book when it comes to New Mexican. My fiance had her family in town when my daughter was born and we decided to take them to the Osuna location by our house and again to the Lomas location. Best menu and flavors hands down in Abq and I really enjoy how the wait staff works as one unit. You can ask any server for anything and they don't over do it with the "How's everything" and the "Foods tastin' as you want." They just let you eat and know that you'll flag em down if you need em. They pool tips at the end of the night. Great system. Get the rillenos, on point like a needle. Family owned and operated. My numero uno for out of towners. read more

Great local owned restaurant. It is nice to see Miguel the owner here looking very professional in a suit and tie. Service is great and food is always good. read more

Best Mexican food I have ever had! Fish Tacos were great and had a substantial amount of fish, rice and beans on the side were.....MY GOD! So delicious! I will never forget this meal! Staff was the bomb! read more

When in Albuquerque, if you type in the words "Mexican Restaurant" in the search feature of your cell phone, it will be bombarded with an overwhelming list of choices. Fortunately for me, after reading others' reviews, I ended up at Monroe's. This is a family business, their photos on the walls were a nice touch. It is a nice smaller location. The staff was attentive and friendly. I was just passing through and got a great waiter who helped me pick out an awesome local microbrew. The portions were just the right size. I had the most awesome chile relleno this side of the Mexican border. I had also specifically been seeking out a restaurant that served sopaipillas, and theirs were wonderful and just like I remembered from the last time I was in New Mexico years ago. As part of a family that once owned and ran a restaurant for many years, this place touched me and I really thoroughly enjoyed it as if I were home. I found myself wishing I was more local so I could come in again and often. read more

Went based on reviews... Not what i was expecting at all. Wont be returning. Food was mediocre. The neon sign outside is the best thing about this place... read more

Service was terrific. The menu has a good selection of New Mexico tastes. I had the Chili Relleno and while it was very good it was nothing out of the ordinary. There are a bunch of good places in Albuquerque but this is a good one to try. read more

The enchiladas were nothing to write home about. The beans were dry and the rice was good.

If this is the best Albuquerque has to offer I am disappointed in the food quality. It is definitely canned green chilies. Beans and rice were mediocre. I was expecting a much better tex mex experience after all the positive reviews. Service is the only thing good about this place. read more

Staff was very friendly and helpful, but that was the only good thing about my visit. I had high expectations which was perhaps part of the problem. The tostadas were stale. The Chile was mild, and the carne adovada was unremarkable. The sopapillas were too chewy, which was a fitting final course to a lackluster dinner. I will try this place again another night because I think their staff deserves another chance, but overall I was not pleased. read more

Food is fresh and cooked to perfection, the wait staff works as one big team and it was very easy to get anything I needed. Great vegetarian menu and location was easy to find, parking was a little tight tho so come early!! read more

Had dinner here with another adult and child. We ordered child chile cheeseburger, a la carte burritos. And salsa and chips, which we good. I like salsa with "hotness"! I had both red and green chile on my burrito. The red chile was hotter and delicious! The staff was friendly. I will go back to try something else! read more

This place is the real deal. Great chiles. The stew is spot on, don't forget to add some cheese. Not that it needs it. I was a little disappointed to find out that they did not have Margaritas. Had their Agave Wine "Margarita" and is better than a lot of restaurant's hard liquor margaritas. read more

Outstanding! Service was excellent. The food was flavorful & decently priced. Good beer selection. I ordered Combination Platter with green chili's .. husband ordered Chili Rellenos & loved them. Rice & beans were perfect. Salsa is delicious. We will be back! read more

An excellent place for new mexican food! One of the best chile rellenos in town. All staff were very polite and the prices were awesome!

I was disappointed when I entered Monroe's. I was hoping fore more atmosphere. However, the food was very tasty. I had the cheese enchilada and chile relleno. They both were among the best I've had. read more

Great food and wonderful atmosphere! Love it! The sopapillas are amazing! Pretty decent pricing also!

I had the fish tocos. They were really good. The people who work there are nice and friendly. They have a spicy avocado sauce that is really good that tasted just like the sauce my best friends wife makes and they grew up in Mexico City. Really nice to find real mexican food and not Americanized mexican food.!! I will go back. read more

Authentic New Mexican fare. Carne Adovado platter and burrito were both excellent. Service extremely prompt and friendly staff.

Outstanding service, great menu with something for everyone (including vegetarian), excellent green AND red chili in a super clean new location. Our go to for truly family friendly New Mexican cuisine. read more

Great food and great service! Amazing green chile . I hate their commercials which feature a little kid disrespecting Mr Monroe, her grandpa. They should rethink that idea... read more

I had read great reviews on yelp which prompted us to order from Monroe's. My husband had the chicken fried steak with French fries, a salad and toast. He said he liked the steak but the gravy and fries lacked seasoning. I was totally disappointed in my fish tacos. There was a scant amount of cod in the tacos which suffered from a lack of seasoning. The rice was under seasoned as well. The beans were a little better but none of the food lived up to the reviews from loyal customers. I've had a lot of good New Mex food this is no exemplar read more

I think this is the absolute best New Mexican food in Albuquerque. My husband likes the breakfast enchiladas for dinner and I order green chile chicken enchiladas ala carte, with a side of whole beans. Sometimes it can be uncomfortably loud at dinner, so keep this in mind when you select a table location. read more

God, we needed that meal. Stopped in ABQ for the night on a long journey, and came here looking for some solid New Mexican food. Monroe's did not disappoint. Tried the rellenos and carne abodava, both of which were top notch. The staff, meanwhile, went above and beyond for my family to make for a wonderful dining experience. I think they could see that we were exhausted from traveling, and took excellent care of us. My only regret is that Yelp can't let me post more than 5 stars. Thanks, ya'll. read more

Was in ABQ visiting friends and they took us here for breakfast..great little down home restaurant. I had the chicken fried steak skillet with green chile cream sauce and it was awesome..portions were huge, service and ambiance was spot on..one of the best meals we had there . Highly recommended for authentic New Mexican cuisine. read more

Mmmmmmm. Staff was super friendly, prices were reasonable, and food was tasty! We all got the combination plate with enchilada and substituted the chili relleno for the tamale, although after tasting their adovado, i may have to go back. Can i just say, i LOVE chile relleno! It is reason enough to come to new mexico. Monroe's makes a tasty one, and, like i said, i don't think you could go wrong with their carne adovado either, it was succulent! They also have locally brewed beer, and my hefeweizen was the perfect beverage to wash down that tasty new mexican food. read more

Wow, where to begin? Service - incredible, Food - life-changing. We found this place on Yelp and it was close to our hotel as we were traveling through Albuquerque. I would describe it as a kind of hole-in-the-wall but it was clean. The atmosphere was just a plain ordinary family type diner. That's where plain and ordinary ends; the rest has left me begging to return. My husband had a Green Chile Stew that was the best tasting we've ever had out. It reminded of of my Grandmother's she always made, perfectly flavored! I ordered the Vegetarian Chile Relleno Burrito and I'll never see Rellenos or burritos the same. It was perfect from flavor to texture!! I ordered mine Christmas style so I could taste the red and green Chile. If there was anything to improve on in the area of food, it would be the chips and tortillas. They were nothing special but the main food was exceptional, including their sopapillas. I can't say enough about the service and it includes the whole team. Our waiter was fabulous and they work as a team so everyone we encountered was just as caring and friendly. Monroe's will go down in my book as most memorable and a new Albuquerque favorite!! read more
