I was going to a baby shower and had purchased all gifts related to poo(diapers, wipes, the book Everyone Poops etc.) and I really wanted to top off my nicely wrapped box with fake poo instead of a boring bow. I went to two stores(one was Toys R Us) and no fake poo anywhere. Then I thought about this place.... gave them a call and asked, " Do you have fake poo?" The polite gentleman on the phone kindly said, "yes we do" . I'm pretty sure calling places to ask if they have fake poo is one of the funniest things ever. It's a nerdy Spencer's Gifts. I've come here several times looking for random gifts for friends. I've always found something here. Which may say more about the people I call my friends than about the store. ;) They have a good mix of completely useless and surprisingly practical gifts. And any place with a wall of robot-related things is A-OK in my book. My favorite thing here is a robot USB hub, whose little eyes light up when you plug him in. This store is so much fun. It's one of those stores I would always walk by on South Congress and think "I should go check it out", but, for one reason or another, never would. I'm glad I decided to stop in there this past weekend! They have inappropriate gifts, plushes, keychains, magnets, all sorts of random figures and collections, ranging from fantasy to TV shows. Most importantly, I discovered the mystery mini Game of Thrones vinyl characters. I am now addicted and will be coming back to buy more. It's like gambling! And they have a great policy where you can trade out a duplicate mystery figure for one that they have in their store collection - I ended up not needing to use it because I didn't get any duplicates. I also found Pac-Man stress balls. I need to go finish my collection and get all the colors of ghosts. It's a fun store and it has that Austin cool/weird vibe to it (without being hipster-y!); it's very well-stocked and their employees are happy and ready to help. read more

This definitely has a slant toward an adult toy store, with the Playboy picture books and the cigarettes behind the cash register. A few other subtly naughty things, but the rest seemed like good, clean fun. I found the obligatory assortment of retro toys, Japanese novelty items, gag jokes, and Accoutrements action figure series. While I was in there, these two ladies came in to buy lots of "ducks" - seemed like they were regulars there. They claimed never to look at the price stickers when making their purchases. I did, however, look at the price stickers, and that's what kept me from impulsively buying everything. (Hey, I'm a Capricorn.) Besides, there really wasn't anything completely calling my name. But on my way out, a display of "popcorn" posters (about 11 x 17) caught my eye for $13 each: mostly vintage advertisements. I found one of the old Normandie cruise liner - just the thing I needed for my newly remodeled art deco-ish bathroom. I'll bet they have something for everybody. read more

I came here for the first time weekend before last and was in awe. The selection they have is very diverse and modestly priced. My boyfriend saw me drooling over a Gloomy Bear plush that had Pitty attached. When you squeeze the button it jerks Pitty's dead body around. So cute! ( yea I'm morbid...whatevs) I hold a loyalty to Domy since I've been a long time customer to their location in Houston. I called them while i was there to see if they had it and very surprisingly...they did not. So my bf got me it and I ended up buying a bad arse Gary Baseman lunch box that I've only seen on ebay. I really like MSMD, I've been coming here for years on their selection of well curated gifts and accessory decor for intelligent people and always found something amazing and usually walk out with something for myself too. Way more than cheap gag crap, the monkey store carries a pretty good library of interesting books - I recently bought Jill Greenberg's Monkey Portraits and a hardcover edition of Banksy's works. The shelves are somewhat theme oriented - tin robots!, animals, coffee (I bought a nice set of nesting rainbow colored cups recently), rogue art, risque etc. read more

Looking to kill a little time last weekend, I parked and decided to stroll down Congress check out some stores. The greatest discovery I found was Monkey See, Monkey Do. It's a quirky little toy store that specializes in the unusual. They carry the normal gag gifts you'd find at spencers but also feature some rare finds...such as Kid Robot collectibles, an inflatable deer mount, cool art by a local graffiti artist and other cool NC-17 items. read more

Sorry, but I liked the precursor to this store, Lone Star Illusions better. That is the store where the monkey statue originated, and used to be on the roof of. Unfortunately, LSI closed after the rent got so high. I keep playing the comparison game, and maybe that's not the yelpiest thing to do, but I'm starting to become one of those people that say, "Austin's just not the same place it used to be, even though it's still cool." There are some good gag gifts in here and it is a fun store. Maybe the three stars is too harsh. Let's go three and a half and I'll think about it a little more. read more

This place is similar to ToyJoy, except it doesn't cloud your brain and trip you up like ToyJoy does. MSMD is much cleaner and has much more "imported" goods (mainly asian toys and bags, little trinkets, etc.). It's a fabulous little shop to visit if you want to pick up a cute or silly gift for a friend or even for yourself! I collect these little kewpie dolls otherwise known as Sonny Angels. All of the kewpie dolls I own are from Hong Kong or Japan, and I haven't seen them in America aside from a handful I saw on sale at Urban Outiftters. However, MSMD had a TON of these cute kewpie collectibles! Including the different series (vegetable series, marine series, crown series) which was very impressive! The store is almost never empty, usually a god amount of people checking everything out. I myself stayed in the store for a good hour! It's a fun store to browse around in, and you'll probably find something cute for yourself! read more

By far my favorite quirky toy store in Austin. Always a fun time to wander through the store. This is my go to spot for gag gifts... which is mostly what I give! I love this place, there is so much to look at, and you will literally spend an hour easy browsing their selection. They have novelty items like (hand drawn)cards, octopus fingers, books, bags, windup toys, action figures, classic/old-school clocks, duct-tape wallets, hander-pants gloves, rare style headphones, key chains, novelty shower curtain's--yeah a random-wild-strange-assortment I know. THIS PLACE IS CRACK! We have to be very careful going in to this shop as I want to buy everything!!! I always tell my husband that this is the shop I dreamed of owning since I was a kid. We go here for Dunny's and the fun little boxed toys. I wouldn't go anywhere else because they have a great policy that if you open the boxes in the store and don't like what you have, they usually have a couple of already opened figures you can trade yours for. This has kept us from getting stuck with duplicates and as a collector that's a nice deal! Plus, the folks working there are always interested in what figures you get as they love the toys too! South Congress literally epitomizes Austin - the food, the quirkiness, and even the annoying traffic. Monkey See Monkey Do fits in well. This is a fun place to check out after dining at one of the eateries up and down the street, but be careful - you might walk out with something you don't need. If you wanted to, you could literally spend at least 30 minutes or more looking at everything. The worker had a great choice in music the night I visited - the two of us were practically singing a duet to "Don't Stop Believing." Consider coming here if you're looking for a gag gift or something for a white elephant. This... is my happy place. When life gets stressful, when gift buying gets stressful... I go to Monkey See Monkey Do. I do have a quirky sense of humor, I can be pretty sick sometimes... and I like this place because it really speaks to me in a language only those like me understand... Thank goodness they opened up right here in Austin, the weirdest place in Texas. I think my favorite thing about Monkey See Monkey Do, is the fact that my dad HATES monkeys. So for Christmas, I went straight over there and bought him some sweet monkey stuff to add to his collection ;). I also love the little nicknacks they have. Adorable and funny wallets, magnets, buttons, cat-a-pults (you get to shoot plastic cats with a plastic "gun"), Leslie gear (if you're from Austin, you should know who Leslie is), etc. It's just a fun place for people who like sick jokes and randomness. This store is so amazing. We love coming here to simply browse and I usually end up buying something for my son. Not at all overpriced and there is a wide array of merchandise geared more towards adults. The biggest plus for me is that I was able to find my son Godzilla toys here, and they are the type that he can actually play with- not just put on a shelf. read more

Love love love this shop. All the little toys, figurines, and books were so fun to walk around and play with and look at. My friends and I spent at least half an hour in this store. I ended up buying one of those Marvel keychain things that you don't know which one you have until you open it and the cashier was so nice!! She told us that if we opened it and found out it was one that we didn't want, she said she would allow us to switch it with one of the ones from that group that was already opened - there's a whole bunch of opened figurines behind the counter so you should ask about that! You can also feel around the package - if it's not a box - to try to feel what you got (I felt black widow in one of them) so you have a feeling of what you got. In mine, I felt a round head so it could either have been Nick Fury, Iron Man, or one of the secret ones. I ended up getting the secret one!!! Which was War Machine!!! I was super stoked. Only flip side to this place is that it's a little on the pricier side so be careful what you got in your hands when you approach the cash register! read more

From bacon scented air fresheners to octopus tentacle finger extensions, this place likely has the odd-gag-gift-whatever-occasion gift that is "OMG just right"! Oh, and the staff isn't so helpful, but can sing along with any and all tunes playing, so that is a show in itself. By far probably my favorite store that I came across! Talk about nostalgia from my childhood memory. They have a lot of vintage novelties and toys such as WWF pro wrestler and X-Men action figures! Yes back in my days the WWE used to be WWF and we used to walk 2 miles to school with 56k dial up AOL Internet. Kids these days just don't know the struggle...There were little knick knacks and quirky tokidoki and Deadpool keychains. X-Men and football cards like I used to collect as a kid.
