This is where I have shopped for decades when I'm buying gifts for "people who have everything." Breed's has always been the kind of store where you could count on real service, too. The beautiful objects are still there, but the shop appears to be quite understaffed... and whatever staff there is is struggling to keep up. I genuinely felt sorry for them. This is an ACE hardware store coupled with a tasteful, high end and carefully curated and presented homeware selection, including tableware, gardening supplies, greeting cards, candies and candles and one of a kind objects for the home. A $2,400 candelabra, a Smeg toaster, an excellent selection of flatware, tablecloths and glassware... pretty pajamas, $90 votive candles... But what to do if you want to know the price of that set of Wedgewood china, or the Rialto flatware? Prices are missing on so so many objects. And you cannot find a staff member... And you only have so much time before you need to meet mom for lunch. Ah well. Many of us are trying to ween ourselves off of online shopping. The customer service at the 29th Street location is great but it is in need of much improvement at the Westlake location. My husband went to the Westlake location today instead of the 29th Street location because it was more convenient and came home and told me his experience was like mine -- the staff was unavailable and somewhat dismissive. They told him there would be a three hour wait for gift wrap. Another customer got very frustrated with the lack of help checking out. Hopefully corporate reads these reviews and uses it as an opportunity to hire different managers and/or train the staff better at this location. This has been a longstanding problem at this location but is NOT a problem at the other Breed & Company locations. read more

This store has a great selection but there is NO service. It took me forever to find glue. No one to help locate among the many and dense aisles. And then after purchasing the glue I'm on my way out and I see trash bags.. oh yeah I need those and they are on sale. Nope that sale price is only for those willing to give out their contact info which I believe we did years ago at the 29th st location. And the cashier won't even override it. So I'm waiting til the next grocery run. And then Breed & Co usually has cutsie holiday items. I look for valentines related swag only to find glassware and nothing else. If I was at the 29th street location I bet I'd find all that this one was lacking. I recall coming here years ago and getting the same service- NONE. But the 29th street, every single time I go there people are helpful and friendly. No more Breed in Westlake for me! read more

This store has really changed. Not sure if all locations are going through the same thing but for such a high end store you expect good customer service. At the very least a pleasant hello when you walk in the door. Instead, it takes forever for someone to help or even offer to help and it's without any pleasantries at all. The inventory is good but not anything that you can't get from other stores. I was hoping things would turn around, but it's been this way for a while now and I think I'll shop elsewhere. Anyone getting married in Austin should first and foremost register at Breed's. Aside from practicality (you'll keep coming back), they have a curated selection of local and global luxury brands - Sferra, Lafco NY, unique porcelain and glassware. They also host some of the most friendly and helpful staff in the biz, feeling like a neighborhood mom & pop shop where you can grab some lovely stationery and handmade chocolates, in addition to your necessary hardwares. WHAT has happened to this shore?? I lived in Austin for 12 years, and used to come here routinely- for gifts, Household items, Holiday decor, etc.. We moved away, but I come back frequently, and I always pop into Breed & Co. And so I did again this visit- and wow! It felt like an awful mashup of a high end gift shop and a Dollar General. I couldn't believe it. The flow/ layout was completely changed, and there were shelves and cases shoved in everywhere they could fit them; and frankly it made the whole store feel cheap. Most of the merchandise came off as an afterthought - just shoved wherever it would fit. Won't bother going back next time I'm in town. What a shame to see such a local favorite go so shockingly down the tubes. read more

Everyone knows about Breed & Company as a home decor and gift shop, but it's also an Ace Hardware store. And the truth is that Breed & Company is one of your best hardware options in Austin. After finding out that the two big box chains were out of a relatively common part for a toilet, we decided to check Ace Hardware's website and found that this Breed & Company had the part in stock. First of all, the hardware selection here is huge. While the aisles may not be as long or as spread out as the big box stores, the selection of items is every bit as good -- if not better. And unlike the big box stores, you don't need to try to find help. Within a few minutes of fumbling around the plumbing parts, one of their staff came over to ask me what he could help me find. Then, when he had difficulty finding the item, he got more help. Once they determined they had the part, they weren't going to give up until they found it. And when I got to the front to pay, the cashiers made sure that a second register was open to take care of the two people in line. In other words, this is the exact opposite of the big box hardware store. The most surprising part? The parts I needed were less than half the price of the big box store. read more

I love this store where half is a traditional hardware store and the other high end decor. And smack in the middle is a place to purchase coffee and sweet items in the middle. It's a great place to get a gift for someone. It basically a little of everything and great quality of merchandise. This day after eating at Marye's I had to go inside to see what is new. It's a fun place to explore and found a rain gauge and some Easter chocolate on sale. They sell items not found at the big boxes like small honey bee houses. There are some nice items in the garden section. On the other end is the traditional nuts and bolts of a hardware store like lightbulbs, tools and paint. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I keep coming back to see new seasonal items and stuff for my home. read more

Chase is the man! I stopped in to get hard wood floor repair and keys made. Chase greeted me warmly and showed me right where The product was and helped to narrow down exactly what I needed. It worked great when I got it home! He made keys for me quickly and then when I remembered I needed needed a knife sharpener he helped me find exactly what I needed once again. He never seemed rushed or impatient and had all the knowledgable answers. Sales people like Chase are the reasons I keep coming back. Several other team members greeted me and asked if I was being helped. This store is at the top of my list for a home town shopping experience compared to walking into big box stores where at times, not aways, you are just a customer- at Breed and Co- you are important and they seem to want you leaving 100% satisfied and that is important to me. read more

I've shopped here for years and paid a premium for great hardware and paint selection and service, but whoa, something is really wrong here. Just experienced the most frustrating, non-sensical and time consuming series of interactions in the paint department and I will never go back. Managers contradicting each other, paint staff not focused on solving the only problem -- I need paint -- and what should have been 1 20 minute trip to their store was 3 and on the 3rd trip to finally get the paint I ordered -- it wasn't even started because they wanted to confirm which of two brands I wanted. Confusingly terrible experience with at least 3 paint staff, 2 managers and the cashier. read more

Actually this is a hardware store and home improvement store. Lucky me I been coming to this location on Bee Caves for years and love it. You must understand it a hit or miss on customer service either a good or bad thing but rest assured your will be happy with your purschases here. The one thing I admire shopping here is the fact the Christmas decorations are so beautiful, classy and downright put together well. I love the Christopher Radko Collection these are my favorite decorations from fine Europeon design so incredibly beautiful. I prefer buying Christmas ornaments here verses a Christmas store, thats right if you view my photos take a good look at all the Christmas glass ornaments colorful collections cant fail here. One con is it is expensive but quality items to buy. The outdoor fountains are well made and through the years I purshased a few and they last for years. Graciously well decorated you feel a sense of doing the right thing shopping here without fail. They carry coffee machines that are wonder coffee makers a plus. I will always take the time and buy what I need for my home especiaclly out door decoration plants and hundreds of items large variety and so family oriented ....I thank my lucky stars I had to run here for emergency batteries, light bulbs, nails, fixtures, paint and many thing I bought here so yes, I highly recommend Breed and Company cheerfully to everyone looking for the quailty items you seek. This is one of my favorite stores in Austin. They always have what I want. They are so helpful. Not today. First I went there because it said on their website that they had KN 95 masks. They did not have these masks and didn't seem to know when they would. Second there were 3 separate people in the store with no masks on--even though Travis county is in Stage 4-and no one in the store was encouraging mask wearing. Finally and this is over the top, I commended to my husband that not many people had masks on in the store and a random woman who heard me, came over to me, leaned in my face and said a very breathy hello. Seriously? What's not to like about this place!?!! You are greeted like a valuable customer when you walk in the door. It's great for gifts, hardware, and just unique stuff. They have a huge selection of Tervis tumblers. And most importantly, there is someone there who can actually answer questions (be it hardware, gifts, whatever) - and cares about helping customers with their needs. "Breed is All You Need" is the truest statement I've heard all day. I think this will be one of my most favorite sites in which to get lost for hours. This place is like retail goulash - there are Christmas tree decorations next to hardware tools next to Vera Bradley purses next to hot chocolate mix and Godiva chocolate gift boxes. Head to Breed & Co. for that impossible-to-buy-for person on your list. The staff is friendly and personable...in that way that only family-owned local businesses can be. The atmosphere is warm and inviting...I knew I was in a cool place when I saw an employee dishing up lunch off a stove in the middle of the store! Their candy counter is perfectly positioned for passers-by and they offer cooking classes and a bridal registry. You'll find a charming bit of local flavor with their make-your-own Texas chili kits, decorated margarita glasses, and Longhorn trinkets. Go here for fun. Go here for necessity. Their online order system is completely dysfunctional. I ordered some firewood from them one day (the website said available - other more functional ordering systems automatically registered not available), paid for it, got an order number and was told that it would be ready the next day. I got a confirmation email the next day and called the store, gave them my confirmation number, and told them I would be in between 5:30-6pm for curbside pickup. They said fine, and at that time did not say that there was no firewood. When I got to the store at about 5:50, I called and someone came out, went back in and, while I was waiting, another customer comes out of the store with 2 bundles of firewood. The clerk came back out and said they ran out of firewood earlier that day and that my order would be cancelled. I drove all the way down there from North Austin after having my order confirmed over the phone by one of their employees. In short, do not do any curbside orders with this company. Not only is it completely dysfunctional, they don't even bother to apologize for the website falsely advertising what they don't have in stock or for employees not fulfilling the orders while selling the items to walk-in customers. On 1/5/24 my husband went in to the store to purchase Christmas lights that were in sale. When he approached the manager (Max) about price, the Max rudely said that someone should be at the counter to help. When he said there was nobody at the counter, Max appeared frustrated and after getting the price. Out of the corner of his eye, my husband noticed that Max was watching him and taking pictures of him. When he was noticed, Max then backed away and Susan approached him and said "so you are buying all of them, why are you buying all of them" in a very accusatory manner. When my husband replied that it was for our venue in Lockhart she raised her voice and rudely asked "where in Lockhart" three times. She was very rude and yelled at me which is not appropriate in a retail setting. He asked her to leave him alone (twice) so I could continue shopping. When he loaded up my cart with the lights and went to the counter she then continued to push and be rude and told the cashier that he yelled at her. The experience at the store was very negative, and I believe this may have been racially motivated as husband is Hispanic. It could be considered racial profiling because of the picture taking and being interrogated as to why he needed to buy the lights. This type of behavior is not ok and should not be tolerated. I will not patronize this store anymore...The other week Breed and Co lost one of the nicest and most hardworking employee that gave almost ten years of her working life to this company. In these ten years, I have seen this company go from an amazing store to one that operates like a bureaucratic Walmart and treats their employees just as bad. The store culture changed so much and has gone in such a deplorable direction that she felt the need to quit. Breed is a full-service Ace Hardware store (and so much more - check their website for that). While they are limited in products due to their size, they carry a good mix of quality items and offer excellent service from their staff. I use them for many of my home projects with great results. Yesterday I replaced two Fluorescent fixtures in our master closet and was having a difficult time figuring out the wiring. A quick trip to the store for a few items and a consultation with Brent there had me back on track and the problem was solved. Excellent customer service! read more

Particularly, I must commend the "older" (over 40, for you kiddos) staff- super knowledgeable in all fields - plumbing, electrical, odd-obscure replacement parts for my older home. The gentlemen in hardware never let me down. However, you lose 2 stars for hiring the teenage bimbo-types to rock the counter. No only are they unfriendly, but snide comments on my purchase will get me a bit pissy. Almost. I'm really fond of the Breed's location on 29th street but when it was time for me to head out to buy a Mother's Day present, mapquest indicated that I now live closer to the Westlake location so I decided to check it out. Let me tell you that it is very obvious that I live in Austin. I arrived wearing my usual tank top, jeans and flip flops with my tattoos visible. I'm never so aware of how I look or what kind of car I drive as when I'm in Westlake. Pulling in to the parking lot I counted at least half a dozen Lexus SUVs and observed that I was the only woman in there who was not a retired debutante out spending my husband's money. The store itself didn't have as many gifts or home decor as the 29th street location but I did end up leaving with the tote bag that I been searching for for my mom. In the future I'll definitely make the time to go the central location because I feel so much more comfortable there. read more

Driving up to this place after the Beagle Brigade yesterday, I thought it looked small and was really usure about it, that is, until I entered the threshold to this gadget superworld! Loved Carole, very nice staff who enjoyed the beagles (they were in the car right by the front door so we could watch them.) The kitchen tools, selections, and prices are flat happy-making. The chocolate and candy aisle....MMMMMMMM woah. The Christmas aisles, WOW, packaged angel hair?? Like the kind Mamma used to use to decorate? Super Fluffy and iridescent? What? No way.....flashback to better days!!! Woo hoo!! Count me in!! This staff is short of miraculous and the selection will be a shocker to all Breed & Co virgins. I am going back as soon as I can!! Hands down best "hardware store" around. I've purchased some tool gadgets, touch-up paints and switchplate covers here, really the only reason being the friendly and readily available helpful service (vs. having to search for someone in the aisles at Lowes). But the main reasons I go here have nothing to do with hardware. I go because of: 1. The greeting card selection. You know sometimes an e-card just won't do, and so when I want something a little more original that the selections at Target or Hallmark, I go here! 2. The "scents" aisle. I adore candles, scented oils and such...and they have plenty for me to sniff. 3. Plants! Yes, more expensive house plants than you'll find at the big box stores, but you get what you pay for and when I'm purchasing something living I want excellent quality and lush green foliage! 4. Kitschy Things. When I need that Long Horns logoed gadget for so-and-so, a talking bottle opener, a rawhide picture frame, animal shaped kitchen tools, a garden gnome, or when I just had to have a nice bronze Texas Star for my home... read more

I have a project in the area and popped in for some pipe fittings for my crew No offer of help from any of the "sales" staff, who were too busy gabbing (3 in one group). I find my 30 fittings and go to the checkout. I wait behind a customer buying a light bulb and small varnish color sample. The clerk fawns all over them. Another clerk even comes up to tell the customer they will transfer an ice pick for her, from their other store. My turn. No good morning. No "did you find the items you needed"? Nothing. After the sale is complete she asks if I want a bag. I just brought up a basket of fittings, and she asks me in a manner like she is doing me a favor. I pay. No "thank you", nothing. Considering I paid over twice as much for my fittings as Home Depot, without the rudeness, I don't think I'll come back. This is the third time these folks have done this. This used to be one of our go-to places but no more. They don't have plexiglass barriers to protect you at checkout nor do they enforce mask mandates. Further when you point out that fellow shoppers are unmasked they get angry and turn on you with no comment by the store. Just pointing out that we will be skipping what is generally a fine store until they can get their act together about handling the pandemic. read more

Above and Beyond the Call of Duty!! I went in trying to repair the roof rack on my girl friends Subaru. Subaru wanted $150 for the parts to the roof rack I was missing. Two of the guys in the hardware section helped me out by bending a metal L bracket and wrapping it in eletrical tape. Despite the fact they were slammed busy, they took the part I was trying to replicate and modified the L bracket to serve my purpose. They called a few hours later with the modified part and when I showed up and it wasn't quire right, they continued to bend it until it correctly secured the roof rack. I wish I could remember the names of the gentlemen that were so much help to give credit where it is due(Sean and Brad maybe?) I got out of there for less than $2(no labor charge) and we won't have to worry about he skis falling off on the highway. Kudos to Breed's read more

There's something crazy about Breed and Company. It's not that big of a place. They have fancy stuff, plants, and hardware. What kind of place is this? I go to Breed when I can't figure out how to fix something and haven't gotten lucky at Lowe's or Home Depot. You walk in, talk to someone about your problem, get a suggestion how to fix your problem, they dig in a drawer to hand you the thing you need to fix your problem, point out something else that will prevent the problem, and you hand them $10. Sweet! The example - my last issue was fixing some ceramic plug covers from Mexico. The hole was too small for the screw. The guy behind the counter first hands me some plastic screws (so the screw gives, not the ceramic - genius!), then we found a file that Lowe's probably refuses to carry because it's so small. I went home and had the covers on the plugs before sundown. They have knife sharpening too, and it's no joke! Very pleased. read more

Best hardware store in town, hands down. I'm a girl and not really into tools or mechanical stuff. But when I need a part here or there, I go to Breed and Co. Their service is exceptional- they genuinely want to help you find what you need and will take the extra time to ask you questions and dig around. Their prices are a little higher than giant competitors like Home Depot or Lowe's, but I'd much rather give them my business. And so should you. As much as I despise Westlake, there are a few gems hidden there, and this is one of them. The near-campus location is excellent as well. read more

This review is for the registry department. Dishes and cookware do not excite me, but I didn't want to use my hand-me down stuff anymore that burned everything I tried to cook. So, based on a friend's recommendation I headed to Breed and Co to register. The staff took care of everything! I am not a designer, and I have no vision for my kitchen, etc. But, they put together an awesome looking dish set with place-mats and napkins and all. If I want to have a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, now I can have one and it will actually be pretty. They have a great selection and we had a lot of fun looking around their many other departments too. It's like an upscale general store! read more

Ran over here for a Chemex Coffee Pot for my mom's birthday. She has broken a few of these in her life. I'm sure this one will RIP soon enough, but until then she is quite happy with the gift. Neat store. I really need more time to explore it or even the other one. What impressed me the most were the employees. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. When the lady in charge of coffee makers realized they were out of the Chemex, she called over to the other store and had them hold one for me. All in all a very smooth experience. Same goes for the other store and the pick-up of the Chemex. Impressive service in this age of Wal-mart and employee crapitude! Just one more reason to give the indies your biz! read more
