Much better than the nearby Mongrel BBQ Cart, which is run by dogs. What to get: Lamb Kebab Skewer with Cumin Spice... wow. There are quite a few of these heavenly Chinese BBQ carts all over Flushing. The Mongolian Cart, when it's there (and sometimes it's not), is one of the best. The skewers of Lamb (with spice, which is Cumin), are so heavenly, that there's no need to order anything else. Although you may wish to, just to compare. Walk south on Main St from Xi'an or the train station or Roosevelt... you will get here after about 5 minutes. You may have to wait awhile for your skewers, so if it's cold, make sure you're bundled up. Dirt cheap and some of the juiciest, most amazing lamb kebabs you'll ever eat. And don't trust the other cart nearby run by apes. The employees constantly misinform you. Which is why it's called Monkeylying BBQ Cart.

One of the many street carts in Flushing that sell excellent kebabs for $1 apiece. So why 5 stars for this one, and just 4 for the qually excellent Xinjiang BBQ Cart[1]? Simple: this is the only cart I found in Flushing that sells duck kebabs and fish kebabs. Squid kebabs, to be precise. Tucked on Sanford Ave. a little away from busy Main St. and Kissena Blvd, this cart may be easily overlooked by the non-trained (i.e. white) eye, since the name and the menu are written only in Chinese. That's what stimulated my curiosity in the first place: this place must be good. I was particularly curious about the squid kebab[2]. I LOVE squid! I always liked its chewy consistency and the sweet taste. When I was a kid, every Friday my father would bring home some wonderful squids from the fish market, and grill them whole on what looked like a panini press. The squid would then be cut into smaller pieces, and eaten with olive oil, a dash of lemon, freshly chopped parsley and garlic, and a pinch of salt. It was simple and wonderful. This squid kebab brought back all those memories and more[3]! A few things are more satisfying than fresh, tasty food prepared in the simplest possible way. While I happily chew on this delicious squid, I wonder how come that the only cart in Flushing that sells squid is from Mongolia. Do they have squid in Mongolia...? ----------------------------------------------------- [1] http://www.yelp.com/user_details_review_search?userid=QwY_IrZ7Xs4N1ksO6GUBOA&q=xinjiang [2] I also tried the lamb kebab: deliciously fatty and juicy! [3] If, like me, you have a fascination for squids and krakens alike, I recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Search-Giant-Squid-Mythology-Creature/dp/0140286764/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1283396129&sr=1-1

I am not a fan of BBQ meat on a stick from a street food cart but when there are 15+ children, women, and men waiting patiently for the BBQ meat-on-a-stick to cook at the corner of Stanford and Main St. and it is only for a $1, OH MY! I will break my taboo once. (I hate following the herd but it's for Yelp.) I tried it and it tasted pretty good; I am still not sure what kind of meat I ate (see Matteo's review for possible animal type!) but it was tasty and not too heavy on the marinate. Since I can not compare it to any other BBQ food cart; yes it is good but the smoke; cough, cough! Tip: And don't try to talk to anyone they'll think you are trying to cut the line. People do look like they are cutting the line when the cook started to serve.

My 1st choice for Mongolian BBQ Skewers ... I been coming to this spot for awhile & I just keep coming back. The Lamb, Beef & Squid are on point, full of flavor & tender, always cooked just right. The Spicy seasoning is addicting with a KICK! Spicy & Xtra Spicy are the only way to go :). Try not to stand next to the BBQ Cart while the skewers are being prepared. The smoke produced by the grill latches onto clothing ... You will smell, like a giant Charcoal Grill The Entire Day! FYI: Prepare to wait at least 5 minutes ... $1.25 per skewer!

You'll always get tasty treats from any of these carts. $1 for a freshly grilled skewer over charcoal - serioulsy? We grabbed a quick snack opting for a lamb and chicken gizzard each and asked for extra spicy. Delicious! Why can't we have carts like these in SF?!?

Located underneath the subway lines and is just a grill on the sidewalk, they have a little table/seating area and has a unique menu. I ordered the Tlayuda, which is like an Oaxacan pizza(?). Set on top of a large and crispy tortilla, it's coated with beans, cheese, tomatoes, avocado and an assortment of different meats like grilled steak, ground pork, and grilled pork. It was really tasty and I loved the crisp tortilla underneath. Definitely a dish to share because it's huuuuuge. Cash only!

I had read about Oaxacan tlayudas, large crisp tortillas coated with a layer of mashed black beans and sprinkled with savory toppings, while trip planning, and I was intrigued. I noticed the Sr. San Pablo cart advertising tlayudas when I was at Corona Plaza a few weeks ago, and prioritized a return visit. Since then, I've tried a steak taco and the combination meats tlayuda, and both were delicious. The steak taco had juicy and well-seasoned meat, a flavorful tortilla, and amazing spicy sauce. The tlayuda was large enough for 2-3 people to share. In addition to the large base tortilla and bean spread, the combination variety had chorizo, steak, and seasoned pork (the best) for the meats, stringy Oaxacan cheese, tomato, and avocado. There were red and green salsas and escabeche pickles available for garnishes. I would have liked a little lime to add some sparkle to all of the savory flavors. There are 4 small stools and a covered table next to the cart to sit and eat, but I can't imagine it'd be a fun experience in bad weather. Definitely check this place out.
