UNSANITARY. Stopped by on NYE to splurge on a cheese board but saw another customer with a large wet dirty furry dog just hanging by the cheese display. I couldn't believe it so I asked if they actually allow dogs inside (which is obviously a violation of Dept of Health code); the owner responded "Yes" so I left. The front space is *tiny*, maybe 5x10, so imagine having a dog that just rolled around in dirt at a dog run just walk in there and pant all over the fresh bread basket... At a time when good food is becoming more and more expensive, this place is a joke. Service has always been comically slow (think Monty Python cheese shop skit), but this does it. If you are allergic/civically minded/don't want contaminants in your food, do not patronize. You can get your Tomme de Chèvre someplace where they respect the health code. read more

I love this cheese shop. They have an incredibly curated collection of cheeses and cheese board accoutrements. I was in Paris last year and bought a few jars of whole grain dijon thinking I would never get the opportunity to buy it again--and then Monger's had it! Ugh. Lurve to the lurve what is UP! Realized the depth of my lurve as I skulked through Whole Foods yesterday and meh-ed the cheese section all wrapped in plastics. Here, you can have a CONVERSATION! About CHEESE! And you can taste as much as you want and then ask for advice about flavors and pairings. This is therapeutic, tactile, slow food. Once upon a time I got one of those prick tests for food allergies and it made a grid of circles on my arm, and all but one had a reaction (you know where this is going, and yeah, gross for mentioning bodies in a review about food, nice job bish) Does a dairy allergy stop me? Not with places like this next door. In fact, I make sure I eat cheese so that I keep that allergy in check. Show it who's boss. Enough with you snooze fest food phobes. I came here on Saturday to get cheese for a charcuterie board for a party. The owner, who has previous experience at Murray's cheese was very knowledgeable and helpful in my cheese selection. I got one cows milk, a sheep's milk, and a soft goat with truffle paste in it. I also bought some crackers for the plate as well. The selection is small but very high quality. The choice of products are well thought out. Cheese selections are great and the owner is very happy and patient with helping chose something. Especially someone like me who does not know a ton about cheese. Sure have no issues eating it! The sandwiches are amazingly fresh and balanced on the palette. I'm a fan of any one of them that had the pretzel bread. So delicious. I believe Monger's Palate also does picnic baskets and other special things. Worth asking. This is strictly a sandwich review. I ordered two sandwiches for lunch and they were terrible. The pig and fig and turkey. There was barely any filling on the turkey sandwich, maybe 2-3 slices. The pig and fig had shredded prosciutto, maybe 1 slice of it was put back together like a puzzle, and was drenched in fig jam. The baguettes they served for the sandwiches were doughy and not like the crispy ones that were for sale. I spent $24 on two sandwiches that rival the worst I ever had (which was a prepackaged airplane sandwich). Just totally disappointing. I wanted to love it bc it's so close to the park and their products are high quality. But their sandwiches? Overpriced and just not good. I ended up throwing them both out. Step up the sandwich game and you'd have a great all around place. read more

I have been buying cheese, cured meats, and other delicious products from Monger's Palate for a few months now and I feel very fortunate to live near to this gem of an establishment. Lisa and Carol are incredibly knowledgeable with regard to the products they sell and have helped me put together amazing cheese (not charcuterie) boards for those nearest and dearest to me. Their carefully sourced cheeses and cured meats are of superb quality and extremely reasonably priced. I tried purchasing similar cheeses at Whole Foods and Wegmans and found that Monger's chesses are around the same price or, in some instances, less expensive. If I lived in Brooklyn, I would have to walk twice the average NYC resident to work off all the food I'd eat from this place. It's really amazing. For a small cheesemonger's store, it packs a lot of punch. They have breads, many different kinds of cheeses, some selections of other items like meats and olives, and it's a paradise for the eyes and stomach. Their dried pasta selections were really enticing, as well. Visit this place, and be ready to spend money. It's good value, but you'll walk away buying tons of stuff. Ask for tastes. read more

Great selection of meats and cheeses, other products are fantastic, and the sandwiches are SO GOOD. Can't stress enough how happy I am this is in the neighborhood. All that said, yesterday weirdly knocked it all out of the park. My bf and I got the "picnic for two" special and that's why I wanted to write a review - it was that good! Sometimes cheese plates fall short - not enough food, not as high of quality cheeses in them, etc - and this was fab! Lisa (the owner and monger) is just fantastic, especially if you need recommendations for a new cheese to try or what to get for a given recipe.
