    Sashimi and Ichiban

We have been to Mom's on numerous occasions. The food is absolutely delicious and the service is amazing! The seared salmon sushi, yakisoba noodles, and sashimi are some of my favorite dishes.

First time we tried this place who one of my friend recommended. They served Sushi and Noodles. As you know, there are no decent sushi place in Hilo other than " Takenoko", so I was little worried. Three of us ordered several dishes which appetizer, Sashimi, Sushi and Rolls... Surprisingly, the quality of the fish was very good and fresh. Sushi rice was little bit mushy but still acceptable. However, considering the price, the portions were quite small even I had Yakisoba after the sushi but still didn't feel full. At these prices, it would cost a considerable amount of money to feel full. Anyway, we were pretty satisfied and will try something different next time.

Perfectly decent sushi! Ordered a few standard rolls, and while the tempura shrimp was definitely pre-cooked and the quality of the rolling itself quite poor (the shape was inconsistent and the rice was barely sticking to the roll at times), the taste was great! My favorite was the torched salmon -- you can never go wrong with aburi!

One Word! OUTSTANDING! Excellent offerings! Love the Sushi! I've told many people about this place. I am so glad a friend recommended it to me. The restaurant offers Great Ambiance it's a small intimate experience, it feels like you've been transported to Japan! Everything on the menu is excellent especially their Sushi Offerings! The folks there are so gracious and charming! It's a must go to place! It will become your favorite spot! I just wish they were open for lunch!

We were surprised that Moms wasn't super busy on a Saturday. We walked in & were seated right away. The service was pretty good. Everyone seemed really nice. The only thing I would've appreciated was a refill on our water/drinks. No one came to ask and our waters were empty for a while. We opted for sushi rolls. They were pretty tasty. The rolls ranged anywhere from $6 - $25. I really enjoyed the ume shisho roll. It was so bright and refreshing. It's a cute little cozy place. We enjoyed our time and food. I would go again!

We went roughly an hour before closing, got seated right away. Servers were great and on it! We ordered a hamachi jalapeño roll, da bomb roll and Yakitori Chicken Noodles Hot but not-spicy. Food came out pretty quickly as we can see the chef's preparing all foods right behind the bar. Everything tasted great and hit the spot. We also had a beer each, came with a cold glass, perfect just how we like it.

Cute place and good service. The food just wasn't doing the most for me, I got simple rolls and they were kinda pricey. The special rolls were averaging about $25. For the not the best selection and kinda pricey, this place just wasn't for me.

Over priced sushi combo for $55, the fish pieces are small and some purposely cut diagonally to make it smaller piece.

Small sashimi combo overpriced for $55. Some pieces purposely cut in diagonally into smaller pieces and purposely put on top of a big ice bowl to make the fish pieces look bigger. Not worth it. In addition, when the waiter brought the sushi to the table, without asking he immediately turn the prettier side of the sushi set toward my husband when i was the one who ordered the sushi. When my husband asked for a take out box, the waiter walked over and handed me the box directly as if all women/wives should pack left over food. Very sexist and offensive.

Poor service; no greeting after standing there for some time. We were seen by staff but no acknowledgement.

I cannot recommend this place enough. The ambiance and experience are something to feel in person and watching the dishes being prepared with such precision was fascinating. The sushi is so fresh and just melts in your mouth. What a gem, truly thankful for being able to dine here. I also ordered Unagi but I ate it before I could snap a photo! Lol, it was yummy!

The worker was nice about it, but because they don't have a website, how were we supposed to know? We also usually try to make reservations ahead of time, but because there was no website, we figure it's a first come, first serve kind of spot. That's our bad for making that assumption, but now that I'm reading other Yelp reviews, this seems to be a years-old customer service issue. But it makes sense, since exclusivity seems to be part of the business plan (i.e. small/limited seating, reservations only). Must be working for them. Didn't work out for us though, at least in the moment. So even though we didn't try the food (I'm sure it's likely amazing), it sucked to make the drive out here. Pro tip: call first --months ahead before you plan to go here and make a reservation! After just reading some of the reviews, I learned you can do take out but must order ahead of time. Not sure how much more ahead of time. So calling would also be a good idea here. Honestly, the amount of work to just get info, a reservation, and ultimately a meal here is starting to feel cumbersome. I'm not sure I'd want to try making the effort again. We did turn a lemon situation into lemonade and instead had dinner at Ken's House of Pancakes, and they never disappoint! Had we eaten at Takenoko, we would've missed out on Ken's oxtail stew, which was listed as part of the day's special menu items, and it was one of the best meals we've had in Hilo. So, it all worked out.

Despite the parking lot being quite full, there was still plenty of parking available, and we were seated right away. The menu had lots of options, which made it hard to decide what to order. I went with the Okinawa roll (shrimp tempura and spicy crabmeat inside, deep fried with eel sauce and mayo). My coworkers ordered the Big Island roll and the chirashi don, and they both loved their meals. My Okinawa roll tasted delicious, but it was a little too oily for me - probably wouldn't order it again. The tea I ordered also tasted very watered down, which was disappointing. Service was quick to take our orders, but my food came out way after my coworkers' dishes. Understandable since mine had to be fried, but I ended up awkwardly watching them eat while I waited for my meal to arrive. Overall, a decent sushi spot with good options - just be mindful of what you order and expect some timing issues if you're ordering different types of dishes.
