This is our consistent to-go spot. Our kids love their rolls and fried rice. Very quick service and always consistent in quality.

The food was very good for the price! I loved the orange slices after BUTTTT I was being rushed to order when I got there and sat for literally a minute. I was asked by three different people if I'm ready in a span of 3 minutes of being there. Not only that... when I finished my orange slices, they slammed the check down on the table and started taking everything off our table and kept watching if we put the money in the check so that we could leave. BTW, it was 9pm and they close at 10pm! I did not enjoy being rushed to leave... I felt very uncomfortable and decided to just leave since I felt like they just wanted me to go home when I was only there for about 30 minutes. Such a great meal. I loved the sushi, and that's my favorite food. The rolls were excellent. I especially loved the jalapeño one. Ask for eel and the other orange sauce. The sashimi is great too. Plenty of food to feed 4 people. The staff was so nice. Always refilled our waters. We met the owner. Shrimp tempura and sweet potatoes were great as appetizers. Got delivery directly from their website yesterday. Sashimi, miso, & California roll was good. The 2 x $14 rolls were not good. Eel was rubbery, the fish inside the rolls didn't taste as fresh as the sashimi plus Japanese rice wasn't sticky so the rolls fell apart when I attempted to use chopsticks. The topper was the delivery guy asked for a tip after the tip was left via credit card upon purchase. $80+ check for below marginal sushi. Hate to leave This review but this place is way outdated. The sushi isn't bad honestly it's the preparation and lack of updating to the menu. Sushi places are like pizzerias now so competition is tough and my suggestion would be to step it up. If this was the only sushi place in town of course I would go all the time but that isn't the case. I can name 3 within a 5 mile radius. The staff and owners are very nice people and their food is good just not the best. Unfortunately when it comes to popular food (coffee, donuts, pizza, sushi.) I don't want the second or third best in the area... I want THE best and this ain't it. Hopefully that wasn't to harsh however I always leave honest reviews and hopefully this place picks it up and put a little more effort into being a heavy hitter in the sushi world. read more

This gets 2 stars only because the sushi was very good. But the kitchen entrees were extremely disappointing. We have been ordering from here for years. In the past the only real complaint was the attitude of the cashier. But now the problem is food quality. Chicken teriyaki was always a go to dish with a nice blend of spices. The new chef prefers to chop up the chicken into cubes and has diluted the sauce so that the result is a bland tasteless dish. If I want sushi I may still use them but nothing else. read more

My favorite part of this restaurant is the manager. I read most of the other reviews, and I have to totally agree with them, but that doesn't stop me from going their. She is part of the reason I drive 20 minutes to get there. Well that and the Chicken Teriyaki. Their home made teriyaki sauce is so good. I have been going here for over 10 years now, and have never had a bad experience. This may not be my first choice for sushi but the fish is alway fresh, and tasty, and good portions. Im shocked. The service here has gone South! What happened Momotaro, what happened to you? I had dinner here with my girl around 625pm last night, and it was a bit windy. We walk in and had no idea the door behind us stayed open because of the wind. The owner of the place who was about to seat us, gave us a nasty look and walked passed us as if to say "you left the door open" and the wind made the "OPEN" sign flip to "CLOSED". And thats my fault because??? I even felt bad so I ran back to try to close the door for her, and she didnt even say thanks. She just sat us down and walked away. We ordered our usual meal the Salmon Teriyaki and Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box. That usually comes with miso soup and salad. So she had the nerve to ask, "do you guys still want soup and salad?" Obviously we do! We wouldve told you if we didnt. Then, she had the audacity to give only my girl the soup and salad. I was like, "what about me?" I said forget it. Is she afraid she would have one extra dishes to wash. Give me a break! I knew it was down the drain, when we didnt receive the hot towels...They used to give their customers blazing hot towels to wipe your hands with. No more of that I guess. Plus, she came once to refill our drinks. It was just bad VIBE from start to finish. From what I hear, this place lost alot of staffing. So the old staff who were very nice, are long gone. Im surprised we gave her close to 20%. Shouldve given her 15%. I wouldve given this place two stars, but the chef never lets us down, and gave us the usual great food that we ask for. This was my go to spot for sushi and then COVID. Truthfully, I didn't find any sushi place outstanding in the past year. How could it be when you couldn't possibly estimate how much fresh fish you would need (if any) in a week. I was happy to see recent positive reviews, so I thought I would give an old favorite another try. I'm so glad I did!! The tuna was exceptional, very fresh and tender. Appearance....some reviews had called it a hole in the wall. I loved the decor and it was very clean. Service was perfect....they paced the meal...filled our drinks up quickly. This place is pretty laid back. They have take out and nearby delivery. The hand rolls are great although they are not as tightly rolled where the inside falls out sometimes that's why I didn't give it 5 stars. I've never had a bad time here. The service is great and they are not on top of you. The do take the plates away as soon as you're done which some ppl may not like but it doesn't bother me. Momotaro is awesome. I've been going there since it opened about 10 years ago and I will keep coming back. I miss the traditional-style kimonos, the warm cloth towels and the complimentary fresh oranges, but that just makes me nostalgic. I grew up in Cranford, by the Clark border, where there really aren't a lot of great food choices. Sure, it's not the best sushi I've ever eaten, but in my humble opinion, Momotaro is on par with the average NYC sushi spot. I know there are many great spots in New York City. But given it's location in Jersey, you really need to compare it to the rest of the restaurants in that area (mostly chains like Chili's, Friendly's, fast food, etc.). I think it's great value for what you're getting, but sushi will always cost more than McDonald's. And the fact that it's BYOB is great, if you come prepared. The quality in the food (though I'm not a fan of their chicken Katsu) has kept Momotaro as my top pick for lunch/dinner places when I'm home visiting my parents. If you like it raw I recommend you try the crazy tuna roll Or anything tuna or salmon related. The roll has a wasabi sauce to die for. Called for a delivery and wanted to cancel literally 10 seconds after hanging up and she said no we already made it and the driver is heading there.
