I had high hopes for Parkwood Pet Resort because it is new, conveniently located in Pikesville, and…read moremuch closer to me. I live in Owings Mills and normally drive to Downtown Dog Resort in Locust Point with my 70-pound, fawn-colored Lab/Pit mix, Buffy. I thought I'd try somewhere closer for a weekend boarding stay. Lesson learned: convenience isn't everything. I went to Parkwood on Thursday for a tour, Buffy's temperament test, and to pay the deposit for her Friday and Saturday stay. The young woman at the front desk was wonderful. She greeted Buffy warmly, gave her nose kisses, gave us a tour, and then took Buffy back for her temperament test. About five minutes later, she returned and told me everything went fine and that Buffy was a sweet dog. I left feeling very good about the facility. Then Friday happened. A different employee, Elizabeth, was working. The atmosphere immediately felt different. She didn't warmly greet me or Buffy. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt--it was Friday, after all. As we went through Buffy's food, I also had treats for her. Elizabeth told me they could only feed dogs during scheduled feeding times. I explained these weren't a meal, just treats, but I accepted that they had their rules. Buffy is trained and wears a correction collar. I was then told she could not wear it there and that I would either have to drive home for a different collar or purchase one from them. At this point, I was starting to wonder if they really wanted Buffy there, but I tried not to read too much into it. Then another dog, whom I'll call "P," arrived. P and Buffy barked at each other. To me, this was normal excited dog behavior. P's owner didn't seem concerned and even stopped to pet Buffy. Elizabeth, however, reacted as though Buffy had done something seriously wrong. She then brought out her own small dog to see how Buffy would react. Buffy simply sniffed and walked around her. The small dog began barking at Buffy, and Elizabeth said, "Oh, she's just setting boundaries." That was interesting to me. When her dog barked, it was "setting boundaries," but when Buffy barked, it seemed to be a problem. Elizabeth then took Buffy to the back with larger dogs. Again, Buffy and another dog walked around each other and barked. Elizabeth immediately brought Buffy back out and told me maybe she was just excited that day, but they couldn't have her there. She offered a refund and suggested I try their West Baltimore location instead. If Buffy's temperament was genuinely unsuitable for Parkwood, I can respect their decision. What I couldn't understand was why she passed the temperament test the day before, why I was told she was a sweet dog, and then suddenly wasn't welcome the next morning. And if her behavior was truly the issue, suggesting another location within the same company didn't make much sense to me. I asked for my refund and left. I was told it would take 3-5 days. As I was leaving, I saw other dogs arriving who were also barking and getting excited. Dogs bark. Dogs get excited. That's normal. What bothered me was the apparent difference in how that behavior was interpreted when it came from Buffy. At first, I thought perhaps I had simply encountered a staff member who wasn't a good fit for us. I later learned Elizabeth is the owner, which honestly changed my perspective. I'm simply sharing my experience as a paying customer and dog owner. I also tried to share this on Google, but reviews are currently disabled. Interesting. Buffy has been boarded and trained at Downtown Dog Resort in Locust Point for about two years. They know her, work with her, treat her like family, and she gets excited before we even get off the 95 exit because she knows where she's going. She boards frequently, swims there, and always comes home happy, clean, and exhausted. I made the mistake of thinking a newer, closer facility would be worth trying. It wasn't. Not every dog daycare and boarding facility is created equal. I learned that lesson the hard way. So, consider this my apology to Downtown Dog Resort for ever thinking I could find the same level of care simply by going somewhere closer. If you want a place that genuinely knows your dog, treats them like family, and makes them excited to walk through the door, I personally recommend Downtown Dog Resort in Locust Point. Buffy and I will happily make the drive.

After his last great escape, I realized that he needed some exercise to break up the monotony of his day. I emailed Andy and he was kind enough to come out that day and meet Alfie (and us, the humans in Alfie's life.) Andy started coming the next day to run with Alfie and wear him out until we get home. It's only been a few weeks but so far, so good. Andy is a pleasure to deal with. He's communicative and great with both people and animals. We really can't thank him enough for everything he's done for us and for Alfie.

I had written some detailed instructions this time because of certain changes that had occurred since their last visit, and everything went smoothly and exactly as planned. To top it off, Dan actually let me know that I had overpaid them and said that he would credit my account for a future vacation - now that, my friends, is honesty. As far as I'm concerned, they can keep that money as a tip, because they surely deserve it. I am so glad that I selected Dog Day Afternoon as my pet sitting provider. My dog Izzy absolutely loves it at Paws! It's helped him socialize and he always leaves with a smile on his face. Most of the staff is also very nice, loving, good to the dogs. Besides a recent bought of kennel cough Izzy picked up at camp, we have no complaints about the day care. The issue I have is that out of the blue the owners decided to increase the half day rate from $19 to $35! That's 4 hours for $35! And a full day is the price of double what it costs for me to board my dog overnight at my veterinarian. I completely understand a business needing to hike up rates due to increased cost, but not only was this abruptly done, but the owner (like reviewer Hannah experienced) came up to me as I was picking up Izzy and said "we better buy packages now because prices are going up in a day or so!" It was rude and as a regular weekly customer I was offended that a mailing didn't go out, nor did an email or anything professional. Paws not only increases prices but no longer wipe the dogs down after they played and drooled on each other all day, and have not replaces their old, used toys in ages. Makes me sad but if prices don't go down, it seems like once our packages are done we will not be able to return to Paws. Just too expensive!

She is there twice a week for daycare, which she absolutely loves because she gets to spend the day playing with her friends. And she has stayed overnight for a week a couple times. They are always happy to see her arrive and she is ecstatic when we arrive there in the morning. The people there are very friendly and true dog lovers. We love the photos that they send us whenever she is there. She is always having so much fun. She is well taken care, loved and extremely happy. Who could ask for more. My friend left her elderly wiener dog at the resort while she traveled out of the country. I was…read morelisted as the dog's emergency contact because I live locally. While under the resort's care, the dog's condition declined. On the night my friend returned to town, the resort contacted her to say the dog may be ill, but also stated he could wait until the morning for pickup (the originally scheduled date). The message did not convey any urgency. My friend, not wanting to leave her best friend there if he wasn't feeling well, calmly made her way to the resort. At no point were we informed that the dog might need emergency-level care, nor was I ever contacted to come pick him up as the designated emergency contact. When she arrived, the dog was handed to her wrapped in a blanket, which struck her as unusual. He had been ambulatory at drop-off, and we typically did not carry him everywhere. Once home, she realized he couldn't even hold his head up. At that moment, my friend knew he was gravely ill and called me in a panic. We rushed him to VEG, where veterinarians discovered he had severe burns and was dehydrated. He required hospitalization and, ultimately, had to be euthanized. We informed the resort and requested assistance in covering the veterinary bills, but they refused. They never reached out to check on the dog and only learned of his death during court proceedings. I am appalled that I, as the emergency contact, was never called when his condition began to deteriorate. I do not understand why he had burns. I'm not a veterinarian, but if he died of old age, it is heartbreaking to think that he could have spent his final moments with the people he knew and loved--yet we were denied that chance because the resort failed to notify us.

Our dog had a strong prey drive and would lunge at squirrels, birds--basically anything that moved. Walks were stressful and chaotic. Obedience was another focus--commands like "come," "place," and especially "down" have become reliable, and working still in challenging situations. Tom really emphasized consistency and practice for best results, which helped a lot! Overall, Tom gave us the tools and confidence we needed to help our dog thrive in a changing household. He clearly loves dogs, but just as importantly, he knows how to teach humans. If you're looking for help with obedience, leash manners, behavioral quirks, or preparing for a baby, Tom is absolutely worth it.

Amazing groomer! My Maine Coon had some matted hair and wouldn't let me get the knots out (there…read morewas a lot and I was afraid of hurting him). Laura's Pet Grooming gave me an appointment the next day and I sat there while she removed them- she was amazing!! It didn't take much time and she cleaned up his undercoat and he looks great! A few other groomers told me they'd have to shave him to get the knots out - I'm so thrilled she could do it without shaving. Plus, he didn't even make a whimper when she was removing them. She was very caring, kind, and gentle. She has great prices too (half the price of the other groomers I called). I highly recommend Laura's Pet Grooming!!
