Don't read any reviews prior to 2023 because that is when ownership changed for the astonishingly fashionista better! Diana is that new owner and she's radically different from the previous owner. It's a new day! Its the next generation run by serious fashion maven who knows how to excite, engage with, and dress her customers. Make Shopping Fun Again! I don't know about you but online clothes shopping is not fun. I need to touch and try on, and have an owner get me to try things I've overlooked. Do you constantly moan that there is no where to shop for good clothes any more like I do? Do your mourn the demise of such fashion treasures as Phyllis, and J Foss both which were in Palo Alto? Despondent that the shops which were in neighboring Los Altos are gone baby gone? Are you sobbing because Hayes St in the City now has nothing other than food joints and bars? Are you disgusted by upper Fillmore, Union St, and Chestnut for being taken over by the usual homogenized corporate dreary made in China but expensive junk? Still can't afford MAC on Grove in the City? (me either) Mill Valley is totally pitiful. College Ave is great for a lark, but not when you need to replace outdated or worn clothes. Well jump for joy because the new incarnation of Molly B in the 4th Street area of Berkeley has risen from the dead. Diana the new owner is young bright as a star, and who has impeccable taste and has made this store a destination. I found what I wanted - tip top quality clothes designed by real designers such as NY77 Design but also some good basics in the mix (but not embarrassing cheap frumpy brands with zero style) I used to be a customer but stopped going many many years ago for various reasons, many which are expressed in those dusty old reviews. But after I heard that the ownership changed and that she was wonderful to work with I had to checkout her and the store myself. Diana is a goddess. I'm so very excited to see someone young, who has vision and good manners, who is inclusive to all ages, shapes, and tastes step up into the world of shopping for clothes! I live in SF and when I want to find clothes that are beautiful, current and refined with an edge, I often rely on M.A.C. (Modern Appeal Clothing), Reliquary on Hayes st. and Mio on Fillmore. Molly B, located on Fourth st. in Berkeley, is another really special place to find clothes that make people stop you in the street. It's a shop that's full of well made and often bespoke pieces and accessories that are supremely tasteful, different and current. The brands are often from Japan and Europe mixed in with local designers. The buyer/owner has a great eye for quality and is really lovely. I'm doing my best to support small businesses and it feels great to support a business with this level of quality and care. Went massively downhill with the new owner. Used to be a fun adventure to see what you could find. Now all the personality and fun has been cleared out. It has less to look at and the staff is snotty. I've been in alone and with friends and been totally ignored. Used to be vibrant and welcoming, now it's like every other snobby store with a very limited selection. Sad to see a great store I'd been going to for years become so dull and cookie cutter. read more

I recently stopped by Molly B after a long "Covid " absence.. it's always been my favorite store finding something unique and special.. Not only did I find three items that I love I was so impressed by the young women now working in the store.. She is so genuinely sweet and helpful.. she guided me with her knowledge of each designer, care of garments and sizing of each piece I chose. It's so refreshing dealing with a friendly, welcoming , knowledgeable staff member.. and she has a darling sense of humor.. Kudos to the owner for her continued beautiful taste in buying and her hiring skills.. both are greatly appreciated.. Final Note: I wore the dress purchased ( from Australian designer) yesterday.. Love their merchandise, but lately the colors even in the summer are mostly black and somber. In addition I have driven down to the 4th street store and arrived at 10:00am, the opening time, and waited until 10:20 and when no-one came to open the store, I left. This happened a second time last week. I think it is the owner that is late. Wish I could like this store. read more

Just discovered Molly B for the first time today - walked in and discovered that an old friend had just started working there today as well! What a great selection of interesting and cool clothes, I found quite a few things to try on and they were all great quality. I found a gorgeous dress to wear to the Bjork concert tonight. Great customer service - the lady training my friend did a wonderful job of supporting all the clients who were coming in and out, while also giving good training on the register and processes. Many of the clients were clearly repeat customers who were greeted warmly, and even steered to check out new items that may be of interest... Molly B. used to be my favorite store in the Bay Area, but lately their merchandise has gone in such an eccentric direction, full of laces, ruffles and other frills that in three visits I could not buy anything. This is one of the most unique clothing stores I've ever shopped in. Clearly the owner loves what she does and is committed to having a beautiful variety of clothing (much colorful) and accessories in her store. There is a range of price points. Some of the most lovely pieces in my wardrobe are from Molly B. She supports designers who in turn offer her exceptional designs. I have to commend Susan for her continued enthusiasm and hard work in keeping her store viable when so much retail has disappeared. And gratitude to other customers who also support her. No one has a store window as attractively set up, and that's a gift to the community whether or not the store is open. I was sorry to hear someone felt size-shamed when looking at a rack. I'm going to guess that staff person lacked some consciousness on the issue, not thinking about her choice of words. I too am large and surely don't fit a lot that is offered here, but do sort through and have found treasures I've worn for years. read more

There are so many wonderful boutiques in the Bay Area with excellent service and beautiful clothes so why shop here? The owner is a nightmare and is exceptionally rude. She accused me of damaging some merchandise after I realized there was a hole when I returned home from her shop one hour later. After she made these accusations in a sarcastic manner she shared with me that she would not be taking the bag back and that it was only a tiny hole--at $250 I would expect there to be no holes, thank you. If you shop here use a credit card so you can contest the charge if there is an issue. I was able to purchase the bag online from the manufacturer directly even though the owner said she called them and they were no longer available--more lies. I was also able to successfully contest the charge. Support a local business that respects and appreciates their clientele, not Molly B. read more

I agree with Heather W. Fourth Street in Berkeley was a regular haunt for me and my mom on weekends. Molly B. has unique, contemporary clothes in a wide range of styles. However, there was some major attitude going on at this place. There used to be an older African American woman who worked there who was AWESOME and helpful. She kept us up to date on when sales were happening, etc. Then, she disappeared. The next person I saw in there was this woman with a Chihuahua(?). She was more concerned with feeding the dog snacks that she completely ignored the customers --i.e., 3 people. Was she the owner? Who was that mysterious woman? Needless to say, I've gone in there a number of times, and I've signed their goofy-a**ed mailing list AT LEAST four times and *never* (and I mean never) received a postcard or anything. Then the economy crashed. Guess who's sending postcards now? Molly B. No thanks. You can keep your fancy ruched jackets and avant-garde skirts. Target will probably be making them in a year anyway. I have been shopping here for years. I would give the clothes they have here five stars, they are unique. However, the customer service here is terrible. I have overlooked this becuase the stuff the store carries is awesome and unavailable at big stores. I wanted to purchase a scarf on the mannequin and and was told that I couldn't because it was part of the display...what??? I asked to speak to the manager and the owner came out and said the same thing! I couldn't believe it. She said they have an artist that does their windows and she would be upset. WTH. It was more important to not piss off the window designer than to service a customer. And the mannequin wasn't even in the window, it was just outside it. I have spent many dollars in this store but she wasn't fazed. She just said I'm sorry but that's our policy. I will never set foot into her store again and it just KILLS me! read more

Molly B is the most interesting clothing store in the East Bay. It's a rare treat to find - in one small shop - such a variety of unusual and stunning colours and prints. Every few months I pop into Molly B. I adore the gorgeous window displays and while I may or may not find something that suits my body - I always appreciate the care that goes into curating the selection. I recently went into the 4th street shop and it so happened that the owner Susan was there. I asked her about her 40-year history with Molly B and how and where she found such unique and beautifully made clothing, and she told me that she continues to travel with regularity to fashion workshops in Los Angeles, New York and Paris. She's been at this for 40 years - and still LOVES her work and it shows. The pricing is what really astounds me. For example, in my hunt for interesting long-sleeved tops, I compared the $45-$145 tops at Anthropologie with tops at Molly B. No comparison. Molly B offers a STUNNING selection of long sleeved tops, well-made, incredible colours and with the same price points as Anthropologie - but unlike Anthropologie, the clothing at Molly B is produced with care and will stand the test of time (and not fall apart after 2 washes). I especially appreciate Molly B's exceptional CUSTOMER SERVICE, in particular, Kayla. Kayla is honest. I love honest. All too often I observe a salesperson complimenting a customer with "That looks awesome" when - it doesn't look anywhere near "awesome". Kayla has an exquisite sense of style and colour. I tried something on and asked her to assess the "look". She kindly suggested that I try something more form fitting. (In other words, something not so "shlumpy"). And along with her appraisal, Kayla handed me another top, one that I would NEVER have thought to try on. And it looked, well... REALLY terrific. I am profoundly grateful to Kayla for her honesty and assistance. Thanks to her I discovered a style that is both comfortable and is aesthetically pleasing to my eye. I'm 56 years old. This is a major revelation. As online shopping usurps a tradition of hands-on exploration, I am grateful to Susan for keeping Berkeley alive with delicious and affordable clothing and for understanding how important it is to woman her store with staff as mature and knowledgable as Kayla. Just stopped by because I was in the neighborhood and they had a sale rack. I picked out a few things and asked if I could try them on. We're in COVID times so I thought they may say no try ons, which would have been fine. Instead, the women I asked, started looking through the clothing, then asked if I really thought I could fit into them. WTF? I'm size Large and one of the dressed (long and flowy, not figure-hugging) was a size L. I was really shocked to get size shamed in front of other people while just asking if I could try something on. I didn't realize the store had a rep for rude staff/owner, but I'll not be going there again. Considering how expensive the clothing is, I'm shocked they feel they can lose customers. read more

I bought a cute pair of Comfy pants here that were on sale. The ladies who were working in the store were sweet and buoyantly excited to help the couple customers in the store, one of whom seemed like she was a regular. It was a fun experience and it was nice that everyone seemed to be on the same page as far as giving general feedback/commentary of items tried on. Initially, I was really interested a fuzzy sweater but when I tried it on, it was pretty frumpy. The staff didn't say anything uncomplimentary but I could tell that it wasn't a good fit! I may have gotten it anyway because it was cozy, but it didn't have pockets or a way to close it so I passed. I didn't try the pants on and they did let me know that they were a final sale. Even if they hadn't fit me ( which they do and I'm so glad I made the purchase!) I have 2 sisters and we have pretty similar tastes in clothing, so 1 of them may have gotten a new pair of pants, now we'll just have to wait til we're all together again and see who "borrows" what :) read more

4 stars for amazing clothing, minus 2 stars for the old lady sales person who thought it was OK to call me fat, told me to be careful with the garment ( I'm 51, work in high fashion, what am I going to do rip the garment?) And there is NO WAY that was going to fit. The owner needs to remove her from the store. Customer service should be equal to the cost of the garments and I was just treated like I was shopping in Walmart. Not to mention she freaked out because I brought the items out of the fitting room and she couldn't find them. (They were hung up on the rack next to the cash desk) The woman ringing me up was kind, but that hardly made up for the obnoxious older ladies behavior. Serious customer service fail. I am always impressed with the selection of clothing at these stores. I have always felt welcome and important. So I was surprised to hear anything negative in other reviews. I was at the 4th street store recently, and maybe it is my love of autumn - but i lusted after so many choices. Yes some of the options are costly, but I understand this as QUALITY lasts for many years, in both style and substance. I still enjoy things I bought at Molly B over 10 years ago. The store clerk was very standoffish, and I left the store feeling unimpressed with her demeanor. I see no reason for her to behave in such a stuck up fashion! I went to Fourth St. to spruce up my wardrobe for spring a couple of days ago. There was a beautiful, but fairly casual (cotton weave and jersey) dress just inside Molly B's door, so I stepped inside to check it out even though I've avoided that place for the last couple of years due to previous rude (think Pretty Woman) treatment. Fool me once... First, a salesperson lets me know that they'll be closing in 30 minutes. OK. I'll try not to hold you up unless you'd like to close right now. Next, the older woman with orange glasses who has been rude to me in the past came over to look over my body and let me know that the dress runs small. When I was undeterred and wanted to try it anyway, she asked if I had a special occasion. I said, "No." She proceeded to tell me that it was very special dress that cost $300 and if everyone tried it on, it would get ruined. WTF?! When handed her back the dress, she said that I could try it on, but repeated that it was special, and she doesn't want it to get ruined. I told her to forget it and that I had really wanted to buy that dress but I'd be writing this review instead. So here it is. P.S. If you're wondering if I looked sketchy, I was clean and dressed in a silk top from Anthro and a skort from Title Nine. read more

I would give this women's clothing store an A+ for style and an F for customer service. I recently walked into the 4th St. store in Berkeley and a woman walked out of the back and walked right past me without asking if I needed help or saying hello. She then went on to help another customer at the cash desk, who was already being helped. When I asked if they had what I was there for, she looked around and said "yes, somewhere", but continued helping the first customer. I looked around and then left. I will never step foot in that store again. I also am in retail and I know what it takes to get and retain customers, and this place doesn't have it! read more

I bought a T-shirt for $80 at Molly B. Too much money for a t-shirt but it fit great and it was a beautiful color. (I liked the shirt so much I bought another in a different color.) After half a dozen washings, holes appeared along the sleeve seams and around the neck facing in t-shirt #1. I took the #1 t-shirt back to the store, but since the manager wasn't in, nobody could/would do anything. I kept going back with the shirt for 6 months (I work a block from the business) but the manager was never there. Finally, I got someone who said they would take the shirt and confer with the manager...but only after they grilled me on how had I washed the shirt and if I had put the t-shirt in the dryer. I said - I only used the gentle cycle (as I do with all my nice washable clothes) but that I probably had dried the shirt in the dryer. IT'S A T-SHIRT. I received a phone call saying I could only get money back if I hadn't washed the t-shirt . They told me to repair it myself - it would look ok! #2 t-shirt is ok btw. So that's what you get for $80 at Molly B - a t-shirt that you are not supposed to wash and dry and lousy customer service. read more

I used to love Molly B, even if I had to shop the sale rack. Ironically now that I'm older and can afford to spend a bit more, I was completely ignored by the sales staff. My friend and I came in yesterday, both of us dressed nicely, and we received no greetings or offers of help. Instead an older lady hovered near us, glaring, her nose crinkled as if she was smelling something bad. Really, Molly B? You're doing so well you can afford to be rude to customers eh? Terrible service, rude staff, no large (let alone extra large) size selection. I went into this store today to look for an expensive wedding outfit. Since I was carrying a bag of food from Betty's Oceanview Diner, I asked the sales ladies if I could stash the bag behind the counter. They agreed in a strange dismissive way and when I pointed out that the bag was a little dirty (I'd spilled a little soup on it) they acted as if I'd handed them a bag of toxic waste. They spent more time fussing about what to do with my soiled bag than they did helping me in the store. They ended up sealing up my poor lunch bag in a plastic garment bag (?!).... totally unnecessary! After all that when they finally agreed to help me look for a dress, the woman helping me had the worst attitude and brought me items that had nothing to do with what I was looking for. While this store may carry a number of cute items, they do not seem to have sizes over an M in most styles (most likely because they only order one L per style.) That's really stupid considering how many tall women there are in the world ...Tall women who can afford their overpriced schmatta. Very frustrating experience overall. I will never go back again and wouldn't recommend this store to my friends. read more

I agree with many other posters: this shop often has great clothing, but always has a bad vibe. I think this comes directly from the owner! Twice while shopping I have seen her berating her sales staff, oblivious to customers in the shop. With a boss modeling that kind of behavior, why would the sales staff behave any differently? I see no reason why we, as customers, should reward abusive behavior. I'm taking my ample clothing budget elsewhere. read more

I have to agree that Molly B has pretty bad customer service. Every now and then I find someone who is marginally pleasant, but no one goes out of their way. I don't like to be pestered when I shop, but I like it to be pleasant. Sometimes the saleswomen act like they are doing me a favor to allow me in their store. The clothes are fabulous at Molly B. I have found some great "signature" pieces. But if you want the same kinds of wonderful, unusual clothes, AND you want friendly, helpful ambiance, check out Patina on Solano Avenue. Patina is a little world unto itself--the store smells good--it's full of little treasures--and it has many of the same lines as Molly B. And if the Ukrainian woman descends on you with her hard sell--just let her know to leave you alone. The rest of the staff will give you as much space as you want. read more

Buyer beware: If you shop here, make sure you check your clothing for wear and tear. I tried on a pair of pants the other day at Molly's and they fit great and I liked the material, but, as I ran my hand down the side of the pants to put my hands in the pockets, the material had pills (tiny balls of rough material) all over the material on one side. You know how some sweaters have pills or balls of yarn on them, well these pants had the same thing. Last year while at a convention I purchased a bag with sequins on it, the sequins destroyed the material on the side of my pants that I carried the bag on. So, these pants must have been worn, several time, and then put back on the rack. They were not on sale, the price was $120. Prior to trying on the pants, I tried on a black dress, loved it and purchased it for $215. I would not have purchased the dress had I tried it on after the pants. When I got the dress home, washed it and ironed it to wear, I noticed a 2" hole in the seam in the back. It was an easy fix, but I think they are charging way too much for their clothes. I will never go back. The staff is not helpful at all, you have to beg for attention. read more

Beware of the no return policy at Molly B in Berkeley! You can get store credit if you bring in your merchandise within 10 days, but no cash or credit returns. I am still trying to work through one with VISA, but it doesn't look like it will happen. read more

I went in to Molly B on Vine St. yesterday after seeing a nice purse in the window. I didn't see the purse in the store so asked if I could see the one in the window. The saleswoman said no - she couldn't take it out of the window; I could go to the store on 4th St. where they had more of them. I didn't even know if I wanted the purse without being able to look at it so I just left. I could be wrong but I thought the point of displaying merchandise in the window was so that stores could then entice customers in to purchase that merchandise. This experience was a first for me and I think will be my last. read more

Wow...I love this store. The clothes are unique, beautiful, and comfortable. I think customer service is perfect...attentive, but not aggressive, so I can look to my heart's content and get feedback when I want it. I can't believe the negative reviews.
