Delicious Dominican food spot. We had the lunch specials a few times and frequently stop by for the cafe con leche. The food is all so Yummy! The mofongo was amazing. We nearly licked our plates. It was so comforting on a winter day. The chicken soup was good, the rice and beans are classic. The pernil was very flavorful. The only issue I have with this place is the super slow service. We wanted to do a sit down lunch so we got there at 1. We didn't get our food until 150. It took forever for the waiter to even take our order. We kept flagging him down and we get ignored. People that came after us were helped before us. I think the service aspect needs to be reorganized. This is a very busy place with delicious food but it needs to run smoother. read more

Whenever I visit my best friend in NYC, we go to Molino Rojo! She's from The Bronx and this is one of her favorite spots also! Their Chicharones are proper pork rinds, not the dehydrated rinds you'll find in a bag (although the bagged rinds make a nice snack or Keto breading alternative for savory dishes that call for flour). They are fresh pork skin with fat and fried up to deliciousness. I've also ordered their "Dos huevos con salami y queso frito y mangu con cebollas" on several occasions (English translation: Two eggs with salami, fried Dominican cheese, and mashed plantains with onions). One word: amazing! The Rellenos de papa (mashed potatoes w/ meat, then fried), Morcilla (Puerto Rican blood pudding), y Pasteles en hoja de pollo y pernil (a root vegetable based tamale type dish stuffed with chicken and pork shoulder) are amazing! The blood pudding was one of the yummiest foods I've ever had! Came here with my dad as the yankee game started - around 1pm on a Monday. We thought it was reasonably priced and the service was good. I got mofongo and my father got fried fish. He initially wanted to special of the day but they didn't have it. I thought it was pretty early to not have the special of the day advertised in the menu. Spent way less than we would've inside the stadium and I don't know if the stadium serves this type of cuisine. Scrambled egg off the steam table 7.95, just the eggs. No wonder it's empty like the OK Coral during a shootout. Stopped in for a quick bite. They have made some nice upgrades including a full bar. The pernil was tender and combined with the garlic sauce it made it very flavorful. Molino's was a great Caribbean restaurant focused on Dominican style cooking near the Yankee Stadium. It is now replaced by 161st Bar & Grill which basically serves the same food just made the restaurant more marketable to more people with changing the name and slight decor change. This was a good option to grab a quick lunch or dinner if you were en route to the Yankee game or happen to live nearby. I had lived in this area for 5 years and this was a favorite although I do admit the quality went down just a little bit. It could be the change of cooks or cutting down on quality products, but all in all the food was still served with alot of flavor. The many times my husband and I sat down to eat food inside the restaurant as well as took food home it was almost always very tasty. The first reason I took a star off is because of the lack of consistency where the food items would taste one way one day and on another day like completely different seasoning. This was something I noticed over the recent years, but again still really good food and authentic. Another reason for removing a star is the music was way too loud like another reviewer said. If I am going to have lunch there is no way I want to hear music busting my eardrums out that early. I could understand them putting the music loud in the evening with people coming in afterwork or en route to and from the Yankees games, etc reasons, but not early in the day or even afternoon when the ambiance should be a little more chill. Other than that Molino's was still a very good option to go have a meal and I say this based on years of eating here and more importantly returning. The meal prices are always going to be based on the times. When the restaurant's costs go up the customer's price has to alter a little bit too. Customers have to try to understand that. This place is a rip off. Everything is over priced and when you say something to the staff they act like you are the problem. I ordered a ham n cheese sandwich w lettuce and mayo. They add to my bill $1 extra...for lettuce and tomato...I didn't get. So they correct the bill and charge .50 for lettuce. I just looked at my sandwich and all they put in was 2 slices of ham. They serve all the staple dominican food delights. As one enters there is a hot bar with the food on display. As we wanted to sit down and eat, we went to the dining area at the back. They have a decent size dining room. Our server was friendly, we went with Rice, beans ,a whole chicken and plantains. I must say though the place is not fancy but the food was really nice. I had the yellow rice and my friend white rice with beans. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Our plaintains were also good. I would definitely come back here to try more food. Whenever I get stuck in the "boogie-down" by Yankee Stadium I always try to hit up this place for some good, quick Puerto Rican and Dominican food. I remember when this little hole-in-the-wall simply used to be called, Cuchifritos. I guess it changed owners and is now more Dominican. Whenever you come to the Bronx you know that you can always find decent latin food, however you don't want to go experimenting if you don't know any particular places. Your stomach just might pay the price. Here you can enjoy your food without the fear of the unexpected. I've learned that if you are trying to get your food to-go, getting quicker attention from the people that work the counter might take more than the Spanish you learned in high school. No worries. They will get to you eventually. The service is pretty timely. You can't go wrong with a good cuban sandwich but I normally go for the standard rice and beans with pernil asado. Mix that all together with platanos maduros and I have a meal that makes me a happy man. The food here is pretty authentic and the pernil here is the real deal. To some, having the crunchy skin or what Puerto Ricans call, "chicharron," thrown in there with the rest of the pork might gross them out a bit but that's the way it's supposed to be. That is what makes good pernil great. This is a great place for lunch. We've tried coming here for breakfast before but if you stray from eggs-over-easy and try to get a little daring, you might be regretting it a little later. I tried a typical Dominican specialty called "mangu" once......ONCE. Having breakfast rumblings from down below at 8am on a work day is not a good thing. Like I said, this spot is great for lunch. I wouldn't go taking a date here to impress because it's not exactly the area for romance. Interestingly enough, the nearby Grand Concourse thoroughfare that runs through the Bronx was modeled after the Champs-Élysées that runs through Paris. Before I walked into the establishment I saw two guys in their 50s get into a fistfight on the sidewalk. Thankfully, the area is near several courthouses and a precinct nearby so the fight was quickly quelled in a matter of seconds by police. We got the following to try: -rib tips: fried, and the meat was bland, tough, and dry. -sweet plantains: not sweet enough and again overfried. -cuban sandwich: pre-made and heated up to order, like the other reviews stated before, it has no pickles or mustard, super dry as well. -passion fruit juice: taste like the concentrated stuff. -white rice: it as ok, but it's not easy messing up rice. This establishment has been here for over 30 years and had the best Spanish criolle food. I grew up in this neighborhood and when I moved to Queens in the 90's I would drive to the Bronx when I had the urge for their food. They have renovated the place,but, I was very disappointed with the food and service. I ordered the white rice, black beans and ox tail stew. The ox tails were tough and did not taste very good. This place is the worst. Extremely rude counter staff, horribly dried out chicken, and everything is dirty! We were trying to ask some simple questions, one of the guys didn't speak English (which is fine), so he was asking another girl for help and she was so rude to us. She told us that one of the dishes was "goldfish," thinking that was funny - but then for real wouldn't tell us what it was. White rice and yellow rice accompanied with beans which were "eh" There is a "check in offer" glass of cold wine, however with an entrée. The fried green plantains so tasty had an uber crunch.
