They put their drinks in glass jars and use papaya leaf stems for straws (works way better than those flimsy paper straws). I got the raw pad Thai and my husband got the bowl with quinoa. His had a nice peanut sauce. Both were good! The pad Thai has a hearty serving--I couldn't finish it. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy outside since the other stores aren't open. We also got their kombucha (restore pineapple) on tap which was on point. I appreciate their attempts to make restaurants more sustainable with reusable napkins and such. Would go again! read more

I had really high hopes for this place. Love that they are zero waste and they mark all the menu items clearly. Food was tasty but I wouldn't call it delicious. I am glad I tried it but the portions were on the smaller side. I am sure there is something to be said about your entree being served in a pineapple though. Best farm to table resturant we have been to! Loved that they are a zero waste resturant and have an abundant supply of napkins which we needed with our toddler. Our Farm to table chef extraordinaire hand picked these black-raspberries in kula served with a waffle drizzled in honey and jabuticaba pea berry tea with a fennel flower. Not impressed, maybe my expectations were too high. We had ordered their specials, vegetarian fried rice and sushi. The fried rice portion was okay, the taste was kind of bland. The sushi quantity was good, but the taste was missing something. They don't offer high chairs for infants. They serve your food, but the customer service was mediocre. We were greeted by the cashier, but the waitress who delivered our food did not ask if we need anything and no once came back to ask how the food was. We left unsatisfied and feeling hungry. A vegan/plant based heaven. As a person who travels looking for great plant based food, it is rare to find such a gem as this. Every item is thoughtfully prepared, unique, and tasty. A great recommend for the healthy gourmet eater. Love it. I noticed that some reviewers have complained about the service they received. I had the opposite experience. We were greeted positively, led through the extensive menu offerings, given great recommendations and served with a happy heart. The place is pretty hip and cool, and the staff is incredibly nice! But I'll explain why I only rate 3 stars. It is the food. It's definitely not the best one I have had, especially in Hawaii. For the taste and presentation of the food, the price shouldn't be around $14-$15 per dish. I totally understand that the restaurant tries to make everything from fresh local ingredients, but it's still very pricey for a pretty small portion of the dish. I'm still not yet full, which is why this is my final thought of the restaurant. If you are a visitor, new to town, you should definitely give it a try and draw your own judgment. On a search for all the vegan places in Maui, Moku Roots was on our list. We almost couldn't find it in the shopping center, as Google Maps kept taking us in the wrong direction, but eventually we found it and made our way in. The menu is amazing - so many homemade vegan dishes - we don't have any place like this back home in San Diego! My friend and I arrived on a Sunday during brunch back in May and split the banana peel carnitas burrito and pancakes. WOW! I never knew banana peels could taste so amazing. The horchata was tasty too. We came back a few days later and I got the taro burger - seriously, it was so good! We also ordered a piece of chocolate cake, which was super rich and wonderful. I've been telling everyone about Moku Roots and I hope to visit again on my next trip to Maui. read more

My favorite place on West Maui! Absolutely amazing and just so great! They even have water in a jug (I think it is copper) Most people don't realize the difference in how you should handle your drinking water. Food selection is off the charts! They have everything you can want and more. I have not tried their drinks but the yin hang toast was so delicious! I ended up coming here for many meals during my 12 day stay and I never once was dissatisfied! Also the staff is super cool and I enjoyed their vibes even when they are stressed they don't let it flow to the customer, at least in my experience. Chefs everyone is nice and food was 5/5. I have my take out box so when I come back in Feb I can use it again! Ps no bags or stuff that pollutes the ocean/land. Is pretty expensive but I live in the Bay Area so it is even more expensive here sometimes. Try the candied bacon it is AMAZING!! If you are in tune with your body and health this is a great place to stop. If you want meat or huge portions probably not the place for you. read more

Food is amazing and so refreshing! Coming from the Portland area where there are a good amount of vegan restaurants I am now admitting that Moku Roots is my favorite! They are extremely creative with their dishes and I love that all the ingredients are locally sourced. Their drinks are delicious! Deserts are so good I cannot believe they are vegan! The gals working the front are so sweet and provide excellent service! They even help you pick out fresh produce they have available at the restaurant! Their menu is quite big too. You can find something to accommodate almost any diet. They pride themselves on zero waste. This is my favorite part of this eatery. They use mason jar glasses, cotton napkins that are washed and reused. They only use silverware and plates. It's very green in here. From live plants to the green couch. It's very comfortable. It's perfect for a casual lunch or a healthy dinner. Its average price considering they source responsibly. They have some retail items like Lahaina heat hot sauce and some tank tops and other clothing items with their mokuroots logo. They also have zero waste items like stainless steal straws and reusable cutlery. Definitely a must for those vegan or vegetarian lifestyles. I had the taro burger and it's was great! I added avocado to it. It's great and the patty is nice and compact. It is a little messy to eat. But overall taste was great!! The pickles were a nice touch too. We visited twice while we were on Maui. I am always in search of vegetarian and vegan food. The food here was not mind-blowing, but it was hearty and tasty. We had the pineapple fried rice with taro patty which I found tasty. My husband did not like the texture of the taro patty. Second time there we had the eggplant Reuben, a version of the sandwich I had never had before. The eggplant on my sandwich was a little tough - but not so with my husband's. We both agreed the rye bread was delicious. I also think the lavender lemonade was divine. I liked the edible flowers too. I really love the earth-conscious initiatives at Moku Roots. No plastic, no paper. Cloth napkins, mason jar glasses. They have a station where you can return your dirty dishes, flatware and napkins - with a compost bucket to scrape the leftover food into. They have metal containers for takeout for and the glass jars for takeout drinks - you pay a deposit. I purchased a small Maui gold pineapple and some local bananas to take back to our villa. The cookie I purchased to take home was wrapped in a banana leaf and tied with vine. I would recommend you give this place a try. read more

I really like the concept of this place. I had the vegan pizza and my husband had the burger. The crust of the pizza tastes like falafel. Then there was some sliced potatoes, a sun-dried tomato sauce, pineapple chunks, red peppers and the coconut bacon all topped with the cheese sauce. It has a spicy flavor that primarily tasted like the falafel crust. My husband's burger was very dense and not particularly flavorful. The burger toppings, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles were flavorful and fresh. We also had the lavender lemonade. It was great. It wasn't overly sweet. read more

My wife and I visited Moku Roots last week while on an anniversary trip to Maui. We had not eaten at a completely vegetarian/vegan restaurant before but were soon pleasantly surprised at how tasty and filling the food turned out to be including the mushroom tacos and taro fingers. Everything tasted great including their in house made veggie cheese sauce and hot sauce. Fabulous hummus, the Caesar wrap is awesome, the pancakes were delicious, and the BLT wrap was my favorite. We order family style by the way, though I might've wanted to eat all of that myself. Surprised there were only like 6 options on the menu when we went in around Sunday brunch time. We chose Taro Burger and some salad with plantains. Food was fine but was woefully insufficient/unsatisfying. Taro Burger was tiny with thin bun and 3 pickled beans on the side. Salad at least fit the plate, but still nothing stood out and felt satisfying. $27 for these 2 entrees and felt like all we did was have appetizer tastings. Won't be going again. read more
