I love that this place does zero waste & is vegan friendly. The reason for the 3 stars is because the food was very bland. No flavor at all very disappointing! Also they can't serve liquor outside & they don't have very much seating inside so if it's full you are out of luck.. definitely wouldn't recommend to come here for a celebration dinner. Service was alright the lady who took our order was amazing! But when I went back to go get our dessert a different lady would not let me take my cheesecake Togo without purchasing a Pyrex Togo container it came in.. It wasn't even an option to wrap it in T leafs they normally use! She then said I could pay for Pyrex then bring it back & get my money back but honestly I just didn't even want to go back. She told me I had to eat cheesecake there. She ended up giving me T leafs for our food to go and then my boyfriend ended up wrapping up my cheesecake Togo in T leaf & when we got home it was still cold! We traveled Lahiana to Maalea so it made it for thirty minutes. Just unfortunate they weren't willing to do that for us. Reply I had no idea it took so much to get a liquor license outside.. I do apologize I hope you guys get it eventually! We are back in Maui and went to Moku Roots 5 times in just a couple weeks My wife commented today that it is the best vegan restaurant we have visited which says a lot as we have searched far and wide for good vegan food with gluten-free options. We had the pizza, squash Alfredo, loaded potatoes twice, brownie twice, peanut butter nice cream bar twice, buffalo cauliflower wrap, and loaded veggie breakfast burrito and all were outstanding. Food was fine, but the woman at the register felt free to pass judgment and make negative comments about the fact that we brought in fast food for our child. We understand and agree with the philosophy of the restaurant but the struggle of having children who are restrictive with their eating or even neurodivergent is very real, and from a customer service standpoint the judgment was a huge turn-off. We were there to eat, not to receive approval or disapproval. Perhaps part of the business model is to be conspicuous about virtue-signaling. They've lost our business for sure. read more

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I visited Maui for 5 days and went to this restaurant twice because it was so delicious. We found it on happy cow as my dad is kosher vegetarian. I am a meat eater, but the food at Moku Roots made me consider becoming vegetarian! I had the Taro burger, lavender lemonade, buffalo cauliflower burrito, sushi appetizer, and my dad had the Cali burger both times. Food is delicious, service is INCREDIBLE! The staff were extremely friendly and answered all of our questions. The environment is very nice too. We ate outside both times. Loved the zero waste practice as well! Surprisingly delicious. We are not vegetarians. But we were hungry after seeing that Star Noodle had a 45 min wait. The husband ordered the Cali wrap and it was super tasty. Oh my, if you're in the mood for fresh delicious food and lots of veggies made into unique dishes you have to try this spot. I don't eat dairy so I often seek out vegan restaurants because so many restaurants have dairy in almost everything and this turned out to be one of my favorite meals in Maui. The menu has lots of unique options and the portions are huge. We loved our salads and the loaded potato wedges/fries were seriously amazing. The drinks are delicious too - my husband had the chai and I had the green juice. I also love that they are zero waste and source locally. Lots of gluten free options too! If you are looking for a place that is fresh, vegan (even if you aren't one!), sustainable, and absolutely delicious, this is the one. Everything that we had was top notch and everything was from local farms on Maui or made from scratch. Even the kombucha they served was made in house. All their drinks were fresh and local. Their taro burgers were delicious and their warm bowls were fresh and filling. Can't miss out on their yuca fries either. The owner was kind and helpful, making sure that we knew what were the best options since she could tell it was our first time. The ambiance was hard to beat, with a cozy feel that was highlighted by the inside plants, wooden features, warm lights, etc. In general, I would recommend this to anyone who wants something fresh and delicious while supporting all things local on Hawaii since that is a focal point of this business. read more

I cant even comment on the food as we had a horrible experience with the staff and that overshadowed everything. We found this place on google while visiting Maui and ordered pick up one night. Since they were closing up while we came in to pick up food(Tuesday), i was trying to rush and didnt realize until after I paid that I was charged $20 for the to-go boxes. No one had mentioned that before, and when I asked the staff who gave my order (Rachel) , she said she thought we knew about it. She said we would get the deposit back if we returned the boxes. Since I had already paid, I had not choice but to leave and plan to come back the next day to return the boxes. When we came in the next day(wednesday), we found a sign on the door that the place was closed that day for an employee party. We would have definitely appreciated a heads up the previous day when we had talked abt the returning of the boxes. We were flying out Thursday afternoon at 2 pm, and were planning to hopefully return this box as soon as the place opens up at 10:30am, eventhough that is a later than when we would have liked to be at the airport, since we didnt want to trash the boxes or lose the "deposit". We tried to contact them on facebook, leave voice messages, asking if there was a way to return the boxes earlier and finally we got a response from someone called "Alexa" on facebook saying we could come by around 9:30 am on Thursday while they were preparing to open for the day. I thought this was awesome as we could leave a little earlier to the airport and not wait till the opening time. We reached the restaurant at around 10 am and my husband ran in to return the boxes while i was in the car with my baby and toddler. He came back saying that they wouldnt open the door or talk to him in anyway. He tried calling them on phone to explain that we were asked to come at 9:30 but none would pick up the phone, as they could see it was him calling them through the doors. Finally distraught, i came to the door as well, with my kids and we were all trying to show the boxes and tell them that we were there just to return the boxes, as we were asked to come by Alexa. Each and every one of the staff, including the waitress who I had the interaction with on Tuesday during pick up(Rachel), ignored us eventhough they could hear what we were saying. It was really demeaning to stand outside like we were beggars, while everyone inside just ignored us. We would have left , but at this point, i really didnt want to let them get away with them treating us like this, especially when they had asked us to come. My husband finally went through the back to explain the situation and one of the staff (Iam guessing the owner?) came over to open the door. When I tried to explain that we were standing outside at the direction of ALexa to return the boxes, Rachel told me to stop yelling . I was visibly upset at standing outside with my two kids in the hot sun, requesting them to just listen to us , like we were human beings and not ignore us. Obviously if someone is standing with two of their delivery boxes and waving( they could also hear us, mind you), the decent thing to do would be atleast to ask what the hell we needed. The lady who finally opened the door did return the deposit money and asked if I needed a hug lol.. i dont know if it was patronizing or not, but I took it, as I totally broke down at this point, as I was totally upset at this whole situation and stressed abt being late to the airport. There were no apologies even after knowing that we were there since Alexa asked us to come, everyone just stared at us like we were invading their space.For a place that is trying to do something good with zero wastage, I felt they didnt have a matching attitude and absolutely no aloha spirit. I would not visit here again. How you treat people is more important than all the hype you create online abt this place. read more

I wish Moku Roots could be near me in Seattle. They are truly committed to sustainability and believe in zero-waste. I mean, I think that Seattle could learn a thing or two from Moku Roots...and that is saying a lot. First, I am impressed that they use cloth napkins. Second, I love that they only have reusable take out containers (with deposit) or you can bring your own. Third, if you want a sandwich to go, they wrap it in a leaf. Fourth, their self-serve water glasses included some glasses but also included glasses that are clearly being reused instead of recycled (i.e., mustard jars). As for the food. It was delicious and also surprisingly filling. I ordered some sort of veggie burger of the week. It was huge. I also didn't order any sides with it. I usually can't eat a burger without some sort of chip/potato salad/carb on the side. But this burger was awesome and piled high with veggies. I didn't miss the carb-y side at all. My friend had a falafel wrap and thought it was excellent. She ate the entire thing and is usually the type of person who doesn't finish everything on her plate. My only small complaint is that they watered down the liquid soap in the bathroom so much that it was mostly water. I don't think that is very sanitary, especially in a restaurant. But, I'm sure adding a little water to your liquid soap is probably a good thing to do. They just over did it. read more

The burger was good but I didn't think it was that flavorful. The raw special was yummy and we added some extra hot sauce and spices that they kindly gave when we requested. The fritters were delish. What a find! Last week I was at a friends house and her son Jeremy brought over a sandwich from Moku Roots which I shared and was blown away! Wrapped in ti leafs - no plastic, paper or waste wrappings from this establishment - I was quickly transformed. The sandwich was a weekly special, a mok crab salad on freshly in-house baked bread. The flavors were like none I've ever experienced - a perfect blend. Two days later I made the journey to Lahaina for more satisfaction and was I ever blown away!! The vegi rueben was off-the-chart fantastic!! Two days after that, more!! Time for the Buffalo Cauliflower Wrap, OMG!! I'm hooked! They sell their homemade Moku Love Sauce which I brought home to enjoy in between my soon to be frequent trips to Lahaina. Two more days, back again!
