Not sure what the hype is about. Their "famous" $15 taro burger was super bland. The most bland burger I have ever had. Almost no sauce, Patty was tasteless and whoever cooked it burnt one side and keep the other side uncooked (obviously wasn't paying attention while cooking it on the grill with other items). Also they charge you $3 extra to take home a mason jar for drinks (that nobody wants) all in the name of sustainability. Educate me on how an environmentally friendly disposable cup (offered by other vegan restaurants) is not a viable option? Also they refuse to provide any condiments on the side. The bland burger would have been better with Ketchup or aioli on the side, which they declined to give me. read more

I had high hopes for this place! As a vegan, I was excited to try this zero-waste and vegetarian restaurant! They definitely have a great business. It was a fun, casual environment. It's also great if you're looking for something really healthy! However, I wasn't a fan of the taste of the food. I felt that the dishes tasted muddled, like there were too many healthy ingredients crammed in. I tried the Loco Moko (I think that's what it's called), the Pineapple Fried Rice, and the Sushirito. I also had a smoothie, which was very tasty! The other part of the meal that was good was the taro patty that I added to a dish. If I went back, I might try the taro burger! If a human could be a restaurant, this is what I'd aspire to be. This unassuming little counter service spot in a strip mall offers the healthiest and most diverse foods I've found on the Hawaiian islands. The culture of the restaurant embodies the Whole Foods movement. I ate here 3 times in 6 days and each time I tried something new, all of which were tasty and nourishing. But here is the best part! They are doing what other restaurants are too afraid to do. They are running a zero-waste establishment! That means CLOTH NAPKINS, composting and sending food scraps back to farmers to feed animals and replenish the land, and no to-go containers! They will happily loan you a tin for a small deposit or wrap your food in LEAVES. And guess what, from what I can tell, their prices are no higher than anywhere else on Maui! This place is proof that tasty food, reasonable prices, and sustainability align successfully. I only wish they'd come to the Bay Area in California and show us the light. read more

I also love that they make a homemade Mac nut milk! So many "nut milks" are filled with guar gums and unnecessary additives. Also, this place cooks in organic olive oil!! Which is rare to find. Loved this restaurant and the food tasted absolutely amazing I got the Taro Burger and the flavors were so well mixed and it tasted amazing. The Mamaki Tea tasted nice and refreshing was a little pricey about $6 but it came in cute mason jar and they had flowers in their ice cubes. The smoothie bowl was also delicious and a really good choice for the weather. The rest of the group got a Falafel Wrap which was huge and looked really good. Great food. So many options. The people were so friendly and always greet you with a big smile. We ordered hummus plate and a falafel wrap. Hummus was good.. But boy did that falafel wrap hit all the right spots! It was warm and crunchy on outside, soft and full of flavor inside. The food was by no means bland, everything was flavorful and had a nice spicy kick to it. It's amazing how they are not using any paper or plastic. I'm a vegan, but my friend is not and even he loved the food. We ate here twice during our trip to Maui. My family and I stopped for lunch while on vacation in Maui, and loved the food. We got various wraps and salads, and everyone enjoyed their meal. We also tried a few "elixirs" that were unique and satisfying. We came back the next day for happy hour and shared the crazy fries, mushroom quesadilla, and beer battered zucchini taco (keep in mind this is just one taco lol we thought there would be 2-3 in the order). Our favorite part about Moku Roots is that it's zero waste!! My mom took her leftovers home in one of the tins they sell (paying a $10 deposit) but decided to keep it as a relic - she uses it all the time!! Found this incredible restaurant the last few days on the island. Ate there twice. The last time on the way to the airport. This is the real deal. Farm to table, Zero waste, vegan with flavor and portions that fill you up. I am a personal chef and a plant based chef myself and was overly impressed with the level of quality their chef has created in their foods. I had the Falafel wrap and had to take part back to the condo. (they do leftover takeout in banana leaves) Had the fries and a side salad. The last night I had the Cali Burrito.
