This particular Costco is nicer than others with off and on long lines depending on the day and time. I always enjoy walking around, thinking of what my family can use and what we can get as gifts for others, and trying the samples (well, that's more or less me). My wife has used almost all of the different services and departments before. It's clear that there's something for everyone in Costco. This Costco in North York is my family's regular Costco to shop at. On one side of my family, I have memories of my grandfather stopping by for a hot dog and a drink and using an electric wheelchair through the store (and avoiding running people over). On the other side of my family, they make regular outings to get produce, meat, and any treats for the next week. On my last visit to Costco, my sister and I ran in for a few minutes to pick up some Canadian essentials to bring back as gifts to friends back at home. Once you are a member of Costco, you can purchase gas at the Costco Gasoline locations. There are then plenty of items including groceries that you can purchase often in bulk. The website now also includes a "treasure hunt" which is simply a rotating selection of items marked down or priced at extra value for a limited time. There is also a food court with very reasonably priced items including the long-time favorite of a jumbo hot dog and drink for only $1.50, which my grandfather and I used to love to get together. There is also travel, photos, pharmacy, optical, and more. Plus, you can get some tasty samples and even buy discounted gift cards. So joining Costco is about a lot more than just the gas, though that's certainly an attractive and added bonus to being a member! Services include the gas station, food court, pharmacy, tire service center, optical department, and hearing aids. Other departments in the store including the auto buying program, bakery, fresh deli, fresh meat, fresh produce, membership, and T-Mobile cellular kiosk. Their Gold Star hours are weekdays from 10 AM to 8:30 PM, Saturday from 9:30 AM to 7 PM, and Sunday from 10 AM to 7 PM. These are the same hours for Business Members, and Executive Members can show up for an hour earlier on weekdays and Sundays and 30 minutes early on Saturdays. While we stopped by briefly this time, we look forward to doing some more shopping there on a future visit.

It was a little getting used to for Canadian Costco to be the same except instead of Visa, it's Mastercard. There were some pretty bad French red wine here. Timberlay Bordeaux is one of the worst things I've ever tried. It made me think of Oberyn Martell's quote about King's Landing's wine being the equivalent of swill. You could probably get a better wine just aging Welch's grape juice, honestly. It's bizarre to me still you can't buy alcohol freely in Ontario without having to defer to the LCBO. Feels too restrictive for no good reason.

My main goal is to try on blundstones boots, the shoe area on the first floor has so many customers. I think there were only 2 staffs working that section. They continued to walk around other side until I flagged them down. It's as if they forgot I asked them for help. They basically told me that they couldn't find the boot in stock. I checked online and they have one available (I also double checked with the cashier at the entrance) . I am fine with getting just the display model, however they can't even find the other shoe. The one that's on display now doesn't even have a price tag on it. I was frustrated, so I asked another staff member and he took his time as well. He said he couldn't find the box. I just gave up, and got something else using the vouchers. If you want to shop for shoes or boots, I don't recommend sporting life. There's not enough staff to customers. My mother and I actually manage to find them ourselves. We tried to order installation services but apparently their system was down that day and I agreed to have them call me back later. When it came time to pay, there were no cashiers and we had to call one over to help us at the self checkout. Later that week, I got two separate calls from a door installation service that explained that they only did custom installations and not off the shelf work. I ended up having to hire a Jiffy pro to install the doors since that "door expert" was useless in setting us up.

Incompetence: Generally speaking, most (more than 90%) of the staff have absolutely no knowledge about the items in their departments, or working theoretical knowledge to provide advice on a given topic in a given department. I have asked for advice on tools, fasteners and paint among other things. And not a single time was I provided with an educated opinion about what's good and why, other than the employee arbitrarily pointing to something that might sell well but is not right for me, and say "that one." If you're going to work anywhere, you should at the very least have basic working knowledge to provide support and guidance to customers that may know little to nothing. I spent 5 years at the LCBO, and took numerous courses to educate myself about various styles of beverage so that in turn, I could approach a customer in need and confidently recommend a product whilst being able to articulate WHY. The staff make absolutely no effort in qualifying the customer - ie asking open ended questions to understand what the customer needs, and compile a solution for them that both generates sales for the store while simultaneously satisfying their needs and making them feel like you're recommending a product based on their individual needs, not just because it sells well. Unfriendly: generally speaking, the staff here are unfriendly. They demonstrate this with their body language as well as their carelessness when speaking and listening to a customer. When asked where a particular product is, an employee simply pointed over yonder and cited an idle number. No other details were given (halfway down the isle on your left hand side, etc) nor were any of the employees I spoke to willing to SHOW me where the item was, until prompted to do so, and even then it felt like a chore for them. There is no one to greet you when they see you've just walked in, nor an effort to thank you for your purchase at checkout. An employee at customer service just standing in front of the computer told me "sorry I'm busy here" after I asked her if she could help me with paying for an item that I had in hand. I would comment about what I'd do or how I'd deal with these kinds of employees if they were my employees. But I've never hired nor worked with anyone that's been as unfriendly as the people in this store. Lazy: Taking from what I said earlier, there seems to be a real issue providing hands on service for customers here. Unless prompted, employees did not actually show me where things were. They just pointed and provided an extremely generic approximation of where the item I was looking for might be. I understand it's a large store. But customer service is an absolute priority in retail. That doesn't mean kiss the customers ass because they're always right. No you shouldn't, and no, they're not. But an active effort needs to be made to assist customers and help them find what they're looking for, so that they can continue to shop here and ultimately end up paying (at least in part) for your salary. As someone who has worked many years in retail, managed people and a small business, I can say for certain that there are obvious issues here that need to be resolved. This is not intended to upset or pick on anyone. It's meant to open the eyes of the management so that they understand why customers are leaving such awful reviews and not coming back. And to help customers understand that they'd get a better experience elsewhere. I hope this has been helpful and that it will make an impact in the improvement of the customer service experience at this store.

I took a chance with Price Wars (awesome name by the way) and sure enough they had exactly what I was looking for... And they were only a dollar each! They also had other out-dated analog goodies such as VHS tapes and blank audio cassettes! I managed to also grab something I was looking for lately which is blank CD-Rs -- something that still costs WAY too much at most electronic shops, but I managed to grab a package of 20 for only six dollars! I just hope my purchases are functional. The majority of these items had a nice layer of dust on them. In fact, quite a ridiculous amount of dust to be honest. You're definitely going to want to wash your hands if you're handling the Price War merchandise. Hard to believe this place sells underwear!
