This place is amazing! We are from out of town and we're eating at Boston sail loft and their manager recommend this place for their amazing desserts but also said we HAVE to go downstairs to the basement and try the best espresso martinis. He was not wrong , they were incredible! Our friend that doesn't like vodka or espresso martinis had two and fell in love! I wish we had a place like this in Florida! The ambiance was a vibe too! Music playing was exactly what we listen to and it was just a laid back vibe read more

We went here over the weekend and really enjoyed this speakeasy. The pastry shop upstairs is cash only, but the bar downstairs does take credit cards. We had their pistachio martinis and really enjoyed these! They had a lot of tables as well for seating. read more

Went here as we were looking for a bar in little Italy. Hidden right below Modern Pastry this place did not disappoint. We got the Pistachio Martini and the Lemon Drop Martini. The Pistachio Martini stood out as the best drink I've had in Boston. We also ate the pepperoni pizza which was quite good. Good place to visit drinks and some appetizers prior to getting the much needed dessert upstairs. The bartender was attentive and took good care of us. read more

Stopped in for breakfast. This is downstairs of Modern Pastry and has different hours. They had full breakfast- nothing fancy but it was quick. The orange juice was not good at all but the rest of the meal was good. I think there are better options around but my friends really wanted traditional breakfast. read more

The staff were extremely rude to my wife when checking ID. This was a harassment and discrimination given my wife isn't a native English speaker. This was unacceptable and my family and me will never visit this place again. I wish I could give a 0 star if possible! read more

Understandably, very busy on a Friday night. A lot of people stand around since tables fill up quickly. Doesn't seem like they have a body limit, so it gets extremely hot and very loud. I appreciate the cheaper drinks for the area ($16 per)- the pistachio martini is decent, the lemon drop is so mild, not strong at all. The cinnamon toast martini is straight fireball with some cream- would not get again. It's also so well known and well marked (once inside) so the spot doesn't feel like a speakeasy :( I think my rating would be higher if I were to visit on a less busy night and had tried the espresso martini, and I'm curious about the banana bread one. read more

We stumbled upon this place while shopping for deserts upstairs. This little gem is subterranean and I had no idea it was there. I thought we were headed downstairs to find a place to eat the desserts we purchased upstairs. Lo and behold, there is a great little sports bar and pub down there. The bartender was quite pleasant and our waitress was pretty, funny and very good at her job. We had a few drinks, chatted with some locals, ordered a few personal sized pizzas and had a great time. It seems the locals view this as a fun place to take a date as it was definitely "cozy" down there. It's neat, clean and fun. The prices were reasonable and the food was good. It was a fun little accident we enjoyed. read more

Tuesday evening was our first time here - and would highly recommend. Somehow when I lived in the area, I had no idea this place existed. While small/cozy in the basement of modern pastry, there are multiple tables/chairs, and a number of bar stools around the bar. When we arrived, it was pretty busy, but we happened to catch a couple of people moving to a table/snagged their seats. The bartender was great, the menu is a bit limited, but there are many delicious options. I had an espresso martini that was delicious, and while not on the menu, you can order cannolis as well. I may officially be converted from Mikes to modern - their cannolis are perfectly crunchy, and the filling is more creamy. We will absolutely be back next time we are in the area! read more

Good dessert martinis here. I have tried both the espresso martini and the pistachio martini and both were simple but strong and tasty. This bar is simple with no fancy decor and sports playing on the TVs for people wanting to watch a game. However, the best part about this place is the ability to cut the modern pastry line. I have been multiple times where the line is wrapped around the door and I am able to just go downstairs (where you can also order cannolis-- just not as customizable). At modern underground they also have a plenty of other bar-type food offerings. Lastly, they accept credit cards downstairs which is also a bonus since the bakery only accepts cash. read more

Tonight reminded me why I come here. Since they opened. Before tik tok. Before, Many things. I remember coming when it was just locals ( I'm not one, but I just loved the atmosphere, food, drinks and people working here. ) It got a bit crazy, a bit, but EVERYONE came together. If you want the real deal North End, it's here. But tip your bartenders. Be patient. And remember. You are a guest. read more

My friend and I took our lobster tail to enjoy after another round of drinks. It's a divey bar with 6 large flat screen TVs playing two different games. There's a full bar with a handful of tables which was almost entirely full on a Wednesday night. It was packed to the brim at one point so we were grateful to have gotten a table when we could. Service was good when they were slower but then required us to go to the bar as it got busier. Overall, we had a good time and I would come again. read more

I went here with a group of 6 friends last winter and enjoyed very good espresso martinis. It was packed and we had to be patient for a table to open up for us. We would have been fine with standing if there was some place to set aside our winter jackets. Regardless, we ended up having a great time once we were able to sit. read more

Located in Modern Pastry, downstairs. Super divey feel with delicious cocktails! Awesome bartender, chill vibes. Cinnamon Martini: Taste just like Cinnamon Toast Crunch! Sweet yet strong. Banana Martini: So creamy & tasty. Sweet & strong as well. read more

Pastries: phenomenal. Bar management here: worse than bad. Stood in line for the underground "bar," meanwhile, "two come out, two from line go in." The italian guy watching the line misses 11 people in the span of 7 mins come out. I proceed to tell him that these people came out - I receive "Two come out, two going in, simple!" .... Don't waste your time for bar, pastries were really good though. Chocolate mouse was great. read more

Really disappointed with my experience at this place. Hard to know for sure if the quality has always been this bad or if it's gone downhill. "The espresso martini" which is supposed to be good there, is made with a bottle of espresso mix and not fresh espresso. It tastes like unknown chemicals mixed with liquid candy. Unacceptable to serve this and charge a cocktail price. If you want a good espresso martini try one of the many other options in the area and get a beer here or skip it entirely. read more

We took a tour with Boston Pizza Tours which was amazing... review coming soon. This was our last stop where we had our final pizza (of three) and also dessert. Dessert is cannoli from Modern upstairs which is a must. It was getting chilly and we were sick of walking all day so this was a welcome stop where we got to hang out at the end of our tour, eat pizza, cannoli, and sip on martinis. They didn't have a huge drink menu, but martinis seemed to be the specialty. We had a drinks package with the tour so they were included. we got the pistaccio one and an espresso one. Both good but very sweet. The type of drink where I would only have one. I thought it was an odd choice for the pizza tour because they don't seem to be known for it. Not one other review even mentions pizza and after going to Rina's and Ernesto's I found this to be an off choice. Nonetheless, the pizza was great and more of a connecticut style bar pizza which contrasted the NY/Boston style of Ernesto's and the Neapolitan style of Rina's. Seems to be convenient that the cannoli is in the same building so it makes for a nice final stop on the tour. read more

Went last night, there were 2 bartenders. We sat at the bar and bartender we had was so rude. He seemed like he thought he was hot stuff because he was a bartender and clearly he did not care about customer service or satisfaction. He also was not just rude to us, we saw him being rude to many other customers too. The drinks were definitely good but truly that bartender ruined the experience. We waited a while to get in and honestly if I went back and saw him bartending again I would leave. It is a cool bar though, great place to watch a game as it has more of a sports bar vibe. read more

The staff here is so friendly! Emily and Lexie in particular have been so kind to us. I've been here 4 times in the past month. It's such a great place to get an after-dinner drink in the North End. During COVID, you have to order food at any restaurant if you order a drink-- at Modern you can order a cannoli with your drink, so it doesn't break the bank or make you over-full. I always stop in here after my meal in the North End and today I went to their New Year's Day Hangover Brunch. Their chicken finger quesadilla is so unique and delicious! This is my new favorite regular bar. read more

I was pretty hyped to learn about an underground bar. But was quickly disappointed when I went downstairs. The vibe is pretty dingy , the crowd is a mix of students and tourists (after all you're in north end..). Our server was very rude and we had to go to the bar to order any drinks or remind them of our drinks. Even ti checkout we had to wait a long time and then finally paid at the bar. Would not recommend, there are many other great places in the area. Get your cannoli, don't go downstairs. read more

Ben, the bartender, makes a killer banana bread martini and is incredibly welcoming to every guest from the bar to the tables. Plenty of places to drink in the North End but there's a line outside of Modern every night for a reason. Food is great also, especially the steak and cheese which is a huge portion. Ben always remembers previous guests and his positive attitude makes the place run smooth even during rush. Not sure what previous reviews say but as someone who manages several restaurants I'm assuming they came from college girls that don't have a job and likely spent Valentine's Day alone. read more

A hidden underground bar under modern pastry shop. They have a menu which contains classic bar food with some Italian pastas. The food wasn't the best but the martinis were delicious. The younger male bartender with a patchy beard and small d*** energy (he told us his name was Ben but who knows if that was as his real name) was literally the worst service industry 'professional' I've ever encountered. I sat down with a group and his greeting to us was 'do you guys want something?' in an extremely rude tone... he continued to be absolutely arrogant and acted annoyed that we were ordering drinks (?) the whole time, not to mention the tables around us were complaining about his crude jokes and terrible attitude. Someone ordered a white claw and he told them to walk down to the convenience store if they wanted one since they ran out....... read more

Great martini spread. They aren't your typical martinis, all "desert" type martinis. Still really enjoyed my time tho and they tasted great

Ben and Maria amazing bartenders. Wanda made us some amazing nachos to go with our cocktails and they did not disappoint. Had a chance to talk to Giuseppe about the bakery and the staff could not be more amazing with their customer service. Service was quick. This is a hidden gem. Great music selection and cool vibe! We came here for breakfast and unfortunately they don't have outdoor seating and we had a puppy with us. We were treated at the door by the owner who tried to accommodate us. We ordered take out and were treated by the owner who then brought out our food in takeout boxes. She was so lovely and a very genuine businesswoman. The food was awesome and exactly what we wanted. I like to pretend this is my secret spot. Cutting the whole line of pastry waiting people and coming down for a couple of tasty cocktails is always so cool. Mostly I come here for the amazing espresso martinis crafted by the downstairs bartender Ben. He's so fun and makes the best cocktails in the north end. Yeaa so the espresso martinis dope here. Had a chicken parm once it was good too. Mostly come for the drinks from Ben. read more

Incredible martinis. We tried the espresso, banana and cinnamon crunch. Banana & espresso martinis were the top 2. It really is up to how you're feeling, I'd try both! Bartender was incredible. Stopped for a drink before dinner. The espresso martini was solid but the other cocktails were meh. Service was great.

This place is amazing! The vibes are so fun and cozy I love that it has a speakeasy feel and the bartender is super friendly! The food was incredible and they have special menus for special times (New Years, valentines, etc..). So many delicious options on their brunch and dinner menu good luck narrowing it down! And don't forget to stop upstairs and grab some pastries and cannolis on the way out! read more

Very rude male bartender downstairs. I saw him be rude and ignoring customers and complaining how hungover he is. Very odd experience.

Cool little spot that has a speakeasy vibe. Walk through modern pastry and you'll see the stairs on the right. They don't take reservations but there's never that long of a wait. Standard bar food (burgers, sandwiches, pizza, pasta). Martinis are good! 1 star off because it's light on vegan fare but the staff is friendly and right in the middle of North end! read more

The drinks were just ok. Appetizer platter was very... fried, but did taste good. Pretty mediocre place, but one nice thing is you can get cannolis from upstairs delivered to your table in the basement. So there's the novelty value. Honestly the cannolis are the only thing I'd come back for, get them by grabbing a drink downstairs instead of standing in line! read more

We had plans for dinner outside on a blisteringly hot day, but decided to pop into the Modern Underground--new since our last trip to Boston--for a cooling drink en route. The ambiance and staff were so delightful that we wound up staying three hours--enjoying dinner and a delicious signature espresso martini in addition to two rounds of pre-dinner beers. Dave and Maria kept up a hilarious and engaging repartee with one another and patrons alike. Strangers at the bar swapped stories and travel tips. Unbeknownst to us, a storm swept through Boston, dropping the temperature from a scorching 97 to a pleasant 77 while we enjoyed our food, drink, and company underground. I thought the Modern Pastry Shop couldn't get any better. I was wrong. read more
