I've had mixed experiences with this shop. They specialize in BMWs, Mercedes, and other foreign cars, and the quality of their workmanship seems good. They also have a policy of only using parts from their own suppliers, which I understand because it allows them to stand behind their work. The first time I came in, they replaced the radiator on my BMW X5. The repair came with a one-year warranty, and I paid around $1,100-$1,200 for parts and labor. Unfortunately, the radiator failed around the warranty period. I wasn't able to bring the vehicle back because I was working out of state, but it left me questioning the quality of the radiator that was installed. More recently, I called for a quote to replace the front passenger CV axle. I specifically requested an OE/OEM part, and I was quoted around $1,700 because they said OEM parts are much more expensive. That price surprised me since I was able to find the exact same OE/OEM axle from multiple reputable suppliers for about $350-$430, and several independent BMW shops quoted roughly $200-$300 for labor. Based on that, I couldn't understand how the total reached around $1,700. Overall, I think they do quality work, but I would recommend getting a second opinion on pricing, especially for larger repairs. read more

Very disappointed with their service. Owner of the shop said they were done fixing my car, just to tell me at the end of the phone call that there is a potential leak and my engine started slow when they turned it on. This is after they fixed my car. They said they didn't check for everything. On the initial phone call I emphasized that I needed my car worked on. Not just half of it. My dad found Modern Specilist way back in the early 80s. I had a 1987 VW GTI that they used to service for me. After 11 years and 250,000 miles on her, she still ran like new. Called for a quote on two shifter bushings. Great price and i made the visit on my day off. Took me right in and the replaced them. The took a brief look at other things and made a recommendation which i was aware of. That means they are honest and don't try to sell things! I also explained an issue i have with the car and they took great interest in helping me we found the part that should be replaced for the problem to be fix. A two part update to my original review: First, I took the Audi back when the fuel distributor came in the mail, back in October 2010. They installed and and it ran great! They were right on the money with their original diagnosis and they saved me a ton of money letting me bring in an outside part. The car ran great! They also informed me that the exhaust had a leak that I would eventually need to take care of. I put the exhaust leak off for the time being. Fast forward to this week, July 2012. I brought it in with a new problem, the car would randomly just lose power and die. Turned out that parking the car outside had allowed for something to damage some of the grounding wires for the car. They fixed that and it runs great once again. I also asked them about the exhaust leak from my previous visit and they gave me the rundown and told me I could take it to a muffler shop to get it fixed, or they could fix it for me and save some time. I let them handle it and they took care of it that same day. These guys are great. Unfortunately I am getting the Audi ready to sell, so I will have to ask them if they would be willing to service my non-German vehicles. I would much rather have their help than other shops in Long Beach. read more

I love this place. I've had various german makes and they've always given consistent and quality auto mechanic repair. I had various issues with my 1996 BMW 318is. Honestly, I can't remember what but whatever it was could easily and affordably be fixed by them. My 2005 VW Jetta accidentally had its transmission fluid drained (thanks, DAD!). The dealership was going to charge me over a $1000 to fix it. I took it to Modern Specialist and it was significantly less! The reason I'm writing this now is because I took my 2006 Mini Cooper to the dealership for its "scheduled maintenance". After my visit, my car was leaking engine oil. I tried to deal with the dealership but they were going to charge me $130/hr to just "diagnose" the car! That's ridiculous! I took it to Modern Specialist-- the dealer hadn't changed the oil filter and the valve on it! Modern Specialist was able to diagnose and fix for a very reasonable price! I recently took my Audi A7 to modern specialist to have the crank shaft pulley and 2 belts replaced because the dealer was trying rip me off. I called up Ralf and let him know what the dealer stated the problem was and he gave me a quote that was way cheaper then what the dealer was trying to charge me. I had my car towed from the dealer to the shop and they started working on it right away. Now I was very hesitant on taking my car to any place besides the dealer because I've had bad experiences dealing with auto mechanics in the past and just stuck with dealers after. But what reassured me that I was in good hands was Modern Specialist was referred to me on 3 separate occasions before I had any issues with my car. 1. My fiance took his 750li BMW here and got major work done back in 2014 I believe his alternator and something else car was running good as new 2. A few months ago A friend of a friend saw my car and was like I drive an audi if you ever have any issues take your car to modern Specialist they do a great job they did a few things on my car and I haven't had any issues since. And the 3rd time was my A/C stopped blowing cold air a month ago so I took it to a A/C place in downey that stated they didnt work on Audi's but they could refer me to a great shop with honest people that work on Foreign cars and they sent me to modern Specialist. I called and spoke with Ralf and he told me to stop by so I drove over and he immediately told me I can diagnose the problem but I dont fix Air conditioners you gotta take it to the dealer, he didnt try and rip me off and charge me all these fees to look at it like other shops do which is how you know your dealing with good honest people. And even with the current repair they just did most shops would be like oh it's an A7 let's charge her an arm and leg because of the type of car it is and shes a girl but they didnt do that. I picked up my car today and couldnt be any happier it's running great. Took a 1970 VW Bus in for clutch repair and found that Leo and staff know their VW's. They did a nice job at a fair price. Hands down the BEST independent german auto repair/parts business around. I've seen many different independent shops ranging from santa clarita down to the oc and I've never been treated as well nor have I ever had more confidence in a shop. These guys really do fix them all. I currently own a porsche '83 944, which most shops will turn down even diagnosing, and if they reluctantly do agree, they charge double what these guys do. Ralf, leo, and david are straight forward, easy to understand and they just do business right. I've been taking my car here for a few years and have had a decent amount of work done, from serious electrical problems (no start) to wheel bearings (a major job on 944s). They never fix anything before letting you know what's going on and getting your authorization and they are quick! if you have a german car and want to escape the hassle of having your wallet raped for half-ass jobs, go here. My son and I took his newly purchased 2007 GTI to the guys at Modern Specialists today to get a new owner analysis. There are other foreign car mechanics closer to us on the east side of the city, but we were referred here .Ralph and his Dad took great care of us and was honest that everything looked good; didn't take advantage of us by changing the oil as I had asked him to do - as it had been done recently - and gave me some information on the need to replace transmission fluid at 40k miles. I was able to identify that the particular fluid had in fact been changed before we purchased the vehicle, so all appear good. We will be taking our GTI to them for any future work needed. the only place i go to get my car serviced. why? once upon a time i went to some place to get what i thought was a basic oil change.. come to find out the guy didnt change the the washer which lead oil to leak and touch a belt that was supposed to remain dry.. thats when i knew i would only take my car too these guys! they are very trust worthy with their work and Ralf stands behind the work with some nice warranty. they are legit. you got to understand it is hard to find trustworthy mechanics out there so sometimes you have to wait. read more
