fried calamari
Jason M.

After doing a good amount of research and comparing multiple spots, I decided to book Modavie for one of the dinners during my brother's bachelor party weekend. I chose this place for several reasons - they were easily able to accommodate our party of 12 (there was no back and forth to book something special), the menu looked like it would appeal to different palates, and offered live music which I thought would be a nice addition to the evening. That being said, I made plans to dine here for our second (and last) dinner of the weekend. Modavie sits in Old Montreal, which worked out since we didn't really spend any time in that area over the weekend so it was good to explore before and after our meal. The restaurant is quite large - it spans two floors and has multiple dining rooms. Decor is modern-ish with semi-exposed fixtures and a dark color scheme. When booking, I was asked whether I wanted to sit in a room that had live music or not - I thought that would bring a fun element to the dinner so chose a table near the music. The menu is described as being French, though I would say there are also touches of other areas of Europe. Lamb is their specialty, and is in several of their dishes - they even have a section solely dedicated to it. Since we were such a large group, I decided to order the apps for the table: fried calamari, escargot, charcuterie boards, and braised lamb poutine. Everything was good, with the highlight for me being the poutine. I'll be honest I was kinda poutined out after sampling so many throughout the weekend, but this was still enjoyable which says something about the quality. In addition to the lamb section, they had a variety of pastas and other mains to choose from. I decided to get the Basque chicken which was served with a piperade and potatoes. This was really good - the chicken was juicy and the piperade added great layers of flavor and texture. Most of us were full so we bypassed dessert. While the food was good, I wouldn't say it was 5-star worthy - but you won't get a bad meal here; the dishes are solid. What was the most memorable aspect of the evening for me, though, was the service. Iman was outstanding - she made sure we were taken care of the entire evening, was on top of all of our orders, and was really the epitome of professionalism and hospitality. She made the experience for me. Overall, we had a great time at Modavie - the solid food, cool setting, and killer service make this a standout in Old Montreal.

Lived up to the expectation! We booked to listen to live jazz and the music was a fun addition to dinner. Cheese plate had the best caramelized onions I've ever had. Great wine list with 5 and 8oz pour options. I had the steak frites for dinner and idk what they did to the fries but they were delicious! We skipped dessert but would definitely recommend for a more french experience in the city.

This place was our first dinner after arriving in Montreal. The atmosphere is very inviting, warm and cozy. Downstairs has a bar, buzzling vibe. Great for happy hour and catching up with a friend. The upstairs is a more traditional sit-down set-up. We had a table in the corner with view of the small stage. There was a live guitar player, which made the ambiance even better. The cocktails were delicious. Overall Montreal has a great cocktail scene! I ordered moules-frittes. A VERY generous portion. I did not finish it, which was a bummer. It's hard to take left-overs when on vacation. The service is friendly, great recommendations and attentive.

We made reservations here--absolutely necessary, as the place was packed--and I'm so glad we did. Just note that reservations are for two hours, and they will remind you. Located right in the heart of Vieux Montréal, just a three-minute walk from our hotel, this spot has a cozy wine cellar vibe with dark interiors, comfortable chairs, and stone walls. We started with bone marrow, a first for both of us. My dining companion wasn't a fan, and I'm still processing--it was rich, greasy, and intensely flavorful. An experience, for sure. The complimentary hot bread was absolutely delicious, served with butter. We devoured it so fast our server brought us a second round, equally hot and fresh. Bless her. My lamb was divine--perfectly cooked and served with beautifully steamed and seasoned vegetables (cauliflower and zucchini) plus potatoes. My companion's salmon filet was equally impressive; she raved about it. We finished with dessert: I had the crème brûlée while my companion demolished the cheesecake. No photos because we ate everything too quickly--a sure sign of a great meal. This place is rightly popular, and I absolutely loved it. Make a reservation and go.

This place is such a yes, loved our dinner experience here, and they're centrally located. It's like a boutique restaurant with delicious dinner options. You really cannot go wrong with most things you order from here. The servers were all amazing, efficient, attentive, all the things. The decor is intimate and inviting, great for dates, couples, groups, most occasions. We had the pleasure of a live musician who was playing some of his own Coldplay faves as well as a few songs from other artists we requested ourselves (and tipped well, of course). The musician, paired with the delicious food and cocktails, great service, and the romantic yet chill ambiance, made for the perfect evening during our Montreal trip. If I lived in town, this would be a go-to for sure. If you get the chance to dine here, do it.

French Onion Soup and lamb poutine

I was solo on a business trip and Modavie was conveniently near my hotel. I sat at the bar, and the service was super friendly. I ordered a (large) glass of wine and enjoyed the live music. It was just me but I could resist ordering the French Onion Soup and lamb poutine to start. Everything hit. I was pretty full when my moule frites arrived but everything was so delicious that I ate those up! This place is a treat.

The ambiance in this place was super nice! Low lighting, intimate setting. There was also a band playing live music right by the tables. Out of all the foods, the escargot was our favorite. All the other foods were also pretty good, as well as the wine!

Vibe/ambiance: French jazz bistro with live music Service: standard Reservation: recommended Items ordered: bread and butter were scrumptious escargot: too cheesey, doesn't come with the shell french onion soup: good flavor mushroom risotto: as a mushroom hater, this was pretty good and the truffle flavor was good mussels and fries: fresh and good creamy sauce steak frites: most mid of all dishes, steak was tough to chew

What started as a spontaneous escape from Montreal's summer heat turned into one of the best meals of our girls trip at Modavie! We walked in on a Saturday with a party of seven without a no reservation and they made it work. Already impressive! The food was incredible with generous portions, beautifully presented, and packed with flavor. Every dish looked as good as it tasted. Shout out to our amazing server, Ariel. Warm, charming, and knowledgeable. He took his time walking us through the dishes and its ingredients, making sure our whole group felt taken care of every step of the way. In a city where we are visitors, he made us feel like regulars.

This was such a special meal for me and my family during our first visit to Old Montreal We stopped in for an early dinner and from the moment we walked in, we knew it was going to be good. Our server Christian was awesome...so attentive, welcoming and kind. The space was so beautiful. We were sat in the more quiet part of the restaurant which we enjoyed. The areas that have live music were more busy and had a heightened energy. The stand out dishes were the nicoise salad and seasonal apple tart. Definitely will be coming back when we return to Montreal

Karla T.

We stopped by Modavie for lunch, and the space was quiet. The service was good and the tartare with bone marrow was actually quite nice, and flavourful without being too heavy. Unfortunately, that's where the meal peaked for us. The rest of the dishes didn't really hit the mark. The duck confit, in particular, was underwhelming. It was greasy with a strong duck smell that lingered. It just didn't have the balance you'd expect from a good confit. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but nothing that would make me want to come back. Maybe the dinner service with live music has a different vibe, but lunch didn't leave a strong impression.

Foie Gras
Crystal Y.

Love the interior and ambiance but the service was a bit lacking, forgetting to place some of the things we ordered and feeling like we received very slow attention. I enjoyed all the dishes but the steak for the steak frites was overcooked and not really a quality piece of meat. Everything else was good, in particular the appetizers. We got the foie gras and garlic snails which were delicious. I recommend the side of truffle mayo to eat with your fries!

My husband's rack of lamb was delicious, although the portion was disappointingly smaller than expected. My lobster salad, unfortunately, came with a vinaigrette dressing that was far too sour--and that's coming from someone who loves vinegar! What ultimately elevated this dining experience to four stars was the Grand Marnier soufflé we enjoyed for dessert. It was the perfect finale to our evening and left us with a wonderful last impression!
