I came here with a friend for a catch-up lunch. When we walked in, I already loved the decorations and the overall vibe. There's a big map and a painting on the back wall, high wooden ceilings, and the whole place just feels really nice and classy. Our server was very nice and checked on us a few times to make sure everything was good. Since it was Tuesday, of course we had to do the Taco Tuesday special. It's $14.95 and you get to pick three different tacos. I got the Carne Asada, Baja Fish, and Short Rib Barbacoa. My friend got the Pork Chicharron, Baja Fish, and Shrimp Diablo. We also ordered the Guacamole with Plantain Chips. It was so addictive!! Everything we ordered was really good. They actually have a lot of other dishes on the menu too, so I definitely need to come back a few more times to try more things. We had reservations, got right in and had a very nice Server-Ben A little disappointed in some of the things that should come with some of the Breakfast Orders. * We had two orders of pancakes with Strawberries, they arrived looked good but were not exceptional, small containers of syrup for three large pancakes, ???, to make things even crazier, especially for this restaurant is they did not come with butter and when we asked for butter it came frozen in a metal cup??? We had a unconfirmed reservation which made it a bit tricky to get a table right away but we were seated within minutes of our arrival. The menu was a newer menu that was missing some items my family had eaten on a previous occasion, such as the birria, but they still came through with the orders and in a timely fashion. Meals were served within 15/20 mins of ordering and the portions aren't overly large or too small to make you feel hunger soon after eating. Everything tasted wonderful, fresh and flavorful. Sunday morning after church, there was no wait. The service was a little slow and food was just ok. Very minimalist set up. We sat on the patio. They took our drink order and we started with coffee. The cups were decent size but not much creamer and only a few packets of sugar. We didn't see waitress much. The presentation of the food just didn't add any pizzazz. Food and drinks = good Service = bad We hadn't been here in quite a while, with all the new restaurant options nearby. The food and drinks were just as good as I remember, but we had really poor service today. We ordered several items off the happy hour menu and thought the chips and salsa/queso would be brought out right away to enjoy with our margaritas, but we kept waiting and waiting ... nope. Everything came out at once and it was brought out by two other people. Our waiter checked on us to see how it looked right after we got it, then he never came back ... not to see if we want another drink, more water, or more chips (which we needed since we still had queso). We had a table of empty dishes and glasses at 5:00 and didn't get our check until 5:20, and that was after flagging him down. And the thing is, it's not a big place, so I don't know why we were ignored. Also, we were charged for salsa, so technically we should have been given another bowl of chips since that price was for "chips and salsa." As we entered the parking lot for Mochilero Kitchen in Peoria we noticed there were a lot of cars for a Tuesday evening but still a few parking spots to be found. We were welcomed by the hostess when we entered the restaurant and while the inside was quite small they also offered outside dining which was protected from the direct sun with outdoor shades. We opted to sit indoors and once seated we were quickly greeted by our friendly server, Ashlynn. While we didn't partake, as we sat we were presented with an extensive tequila/alcohol menu. Too many tequilas to choose from! We ordered two appetizers plantain chips and guacamole and a full order of brussels sprouts without the peanut sauce variation...just made with light oil. The appetizers arrived within a matter of a few minutes and we were pleased with the serving sizes of each dish. Everything tasted great and the brussels sprouts were crispy...yum! A shout out to our server, Ashlynn, she was very attentive, always refilling our water before the glass was empty. The menu is expansive with many options to choose from. The food was fantastic! Reasonably priced and portions were good. The reason for dinging one star is due to the service. We had multiple servers, two out of the three of them seemed disorganized each time they came around to the table. They placed one plate incorrectly and AFTER the food was already touched, they realized it was incorrect and grabbed the plate and placed it in front of another person in our party. I didn't think that was right as the food was already eaten off the plate by someone else. They should've taken it back and brought out a fresh plate. Would come back! read more

As a native Arizonan who grew up enjoying the best Mexican food, I wasn't sure about sampling " roasted mushroom tacos" , but I gave Mochilero a chance this afternoon. I ordered the taco trio with Baja Fish, Mushroom and Al Pastor tacos for the win. A killer house Margarita- on the rocks with salt- quenched my thirst and wet my appetite with some serious tequila in every sip. Flan was my desert choice. The verdict: the Al Psstor taco was definitely my fav with it's citrus notes ,perfectly roasted pork with condiments. The accompanying rice was fluffy and fresh. The refried beans, well,they were refried beans . What more can I say ?! The flan - I have been a flan addict since grade school -was substantial and creamy perfection, might have had a little cream cheese added to the recipe, not sure . What is a mochilero? It's a backpacker. But why name a Mexican restaurant after a vagabond backpacker? Maybe the menu reflects travel throughout Mexico? Seems like maybe that's the case here. The food was better than expected, definitely of the higher end type. Everything was prepared with care and packed with flavor. We had a shrimp ceviche that was good, but not amazing. Chicken carnitas salad was kind of a letdown, as the chicken was not made to reflect actual carnitas. Basically just shredded chicken with some pretty vegetables and a sweet tangy dressing. Margaritas were solid. Over all not bad, a few hits and misses. I think you may be able to better on Mexican food in the Phoenix area if you dig a little deeper. Not bad though. First time here. The prices are high. We ordered the queso and chips. Queso was flavorless and hardly warm. Chips were cold and had no salt. I like them like that but my husband had to salt his cold chips and it wouldn't stick. I had asked if they had spicy salsa and she said yes. Didn't know that would be $3 more. We ordered the carne asada burrito $19 but wanted it as a chimichanga. There was a $1 add on charge for "Christmas" both read and green enchilada sauce on the side and a $2 charge for being lightly deep fried. All of this would have been fine if it was an exceptional chimi. It wasn't. Unfortunately, it was only large because the stuff it full of white rice and black beans. I had to hunt for the meat. I like pickled onions but they were clumped together and over powering. Who puts that much rice in a burrito? The enchilada sauce was room temp. The green sauce is good and was the only thing that made it edible. The $3 salsa and the orange creamsicle margarita were the highlights. We sat outside knowing the days of enjoying the weather are numbered. The waitress knew we haven't been there before and never once came back to check to see how we were doing or if we liked the food. We will not return. Not sure how it receives so many wonderful five star reviews. Must be that brunch they're referring to. Stay clear for lunch and dinner. We won't try it again. read more

I'm back for the chips and salsa, of course, and the smile from Amy R. I plopped down during a storm brewing outside, so I knew I'd be inside for a while. I could have made a meal out of those chips and salsa but I went ahead and added a salad with Tinga meat. This wasn't some bland salad with one kind of lettuce. This was a savory, full of various vegetables and juicy tinga- or chicken with juices and onion and seasonings. I told myself I'd eat half and save the rest for later, but my fork had other ideas. I could've eaten the plate, it was THAT good. I opted for a Diet Coke but Any offered me a refreshing lemonade mix with tagin on the rim. This beat the Diet Coke and I downed that non alcoholic drink! I was able to take home some warm chips and salsa, which lasted about an hour after I walked through the apartment door.
