I was disappointed because I had high hopes going into this place because other Peruvian charcoal chicken places I have been have been so good. First I was there just after noon, and they did not have any of the chicken in the 1/4, half or whole available but you could get it in a wrap or sandwich or other dish which did not make sense to me. They said the whole, half and quarter chicken options wouldn't be ready until 1. So if you are a chicken restaurant why are you even open if you can't get chicken. I ordered a wrap, the chicken was very dry, but fortunately I had a side of sauce they gave me and I kept pouring it on to make it more moist, still dry though. Peruvian is by far one of my absolute favorite cuisines from around the world! It is truly incredible, so fresh and flavorful. Cheviche is THE quintessential amuse bouche. I used to eat Peruvian at least biweekly when I lived in the Metro NYC area. Since I moved to Charlotte in 2012, I have been on the hunt for perfect Peruvian, particularly chaufa and lomo saltado. Alas, that is yet to happen with the very few options that are available near me. I live on the Concord-Huntersville line so every single Peruvian option is a HIKE. Despite that drive, my intense cravings for these classic Peruvian dishes compelled me to drive to Mochica tonight. The last time I ate there was in June of 2019 when my now adult son graduated high school. The graduation practice was held at the Cabarrus County arena which is literally in the middle of BFE, but I did pass by Mochica on the way there so with some time to kill in between, I dined on some chaufa in my van while I waited for practice to be over. I distinctly remember think WTHeck is in this chaufa? Something was added to it that clearly did not belong there. Before I ordered tonight I had the young lady who answered the phone state the ingredients so I could have them omitted. The culprits were BACON and HAM. WHAAAA??? In 15+ years of eating chaufa I have never, ever had bacon or ham in it. I asked for chaufa de camarones, but apparently Mochica doesn't offer shrimp, just chicken, steak, both or vegetables. Yet again, another thing I have never encountered at a Peruvian restaurant. Peru literally is bordered by an ocean on the west and is known for its vast seafood options and oh um ceviche, anyone? But I digress. In addition to my chicken chaufa, I ordered lomo saltado with fries because along with pollo a la brasa, it completes the Peruvian trifecta. I also ordered a side of yuca fries. The chaufa was pretty good sans the bacon and ham and the portion was rather generous. I would have gaven it four stars, but then my son spit out a CHICKEN BONE that he nearly choked on that was overlooked when the dish was created. Now since this is only my second time I've been here and it's been two years in between visits and I am therefore unlikely to go back any time soon, I didn't call the restaurant and go all Karen on them. Just a heads up to CHECK YOUR FOOD to those who have actually read this far into my review. The lomo saltado flavor was good, but as the old lady in the 80's asked, "Where's the beef??? It was literally maybe 8 incredibly thin strips of steak in a sea of red onions, tomatoes and few random peppers. Definitely NOT worth what I paid. I the Northeast, the ratios are completely reversed, 80% steak 20% accouterments. On a positive note, the yuca fries were fried to perfection. The sauces served seemed to be green sauce which was more yellow in color and an orange sauce that look a lot like yum yum sauce or shrimp sauce from an Asian restaurant. The latter was the better of the two, but nothing to write home about. All in all, it's a three when I factor both my 2019 and my 2021 visit. Sadly, my hunt for the elusive perfect Peruvian spot AKA unicorn continues. I will eventually break down and head to South End/Pineville/Matthews when my cravings take control again. Or maybe just get a round tripper to LGA or JFK. That's probably my most sold bet! read more

I made an order and my order was wrong. I called the cashier and she left me on hold for more than 30 minutes and she didn't answer me and when I call again she sends me to voicemail I block my number and when I call from my friend's number if she answers me and what do you mean they don't help me in my order they didn't send my order is good and I'm paying my money. I'm not asking for things to be given away. I just want my order well and they didn't do my order well and it's disrespectful that a cashier blocks the number of customers when you're paying for food. I don't recommend this place anymore. So this place is one of our new faves! Family owned, great food, clean and modern interior. They have all of the Peruvian food you could want. The drinks are authentic (try one!) and the sweet plantains are a must! We get the family meal that comes with 3 sides. We love the rice with beans on top, sweet plantains, and Yuca (yoo-ca) fries. I am a huge fan of the dipping sauce that comes with the chicken. They should sell it! Fast service and the food is always fantastic. They also own the taco/ice cream joint a few doors down. Excellent as well. Try it! Easier to get into than Viva Chicken and a few bucks cheaper. read more

Pretty good Peruvian chicken with really good salads. Sides and sauces are ok. Very close to same level as viva chicken. SERVICE: 3.5/5 - generally friendly and helpful staff. Occasionally, they can take a while to serve after ordering. FOOD: 4/5 - very good chicken. The Cobb salad is fantastic. Their sides and sauces could be a little better, but that does not stop us from going. RESTAURANT/LOCATION: 4/5 - very clean, although a little small. Can be tough to find a table when busy. I tried this restaurant out with a friend of mine for lunch. I had the fried rice and the she had black beans and rice with tostones. I had a pineapple drink and she had a Inca cola. I added chicken and steak to my rice. I did not know that pork was already in the rice but I was asked if I wanted it to say. I said yes because it was my first time there and I wanted to experience it. It came with yellow sauce and I asked for the green sauce. It was such a large meal that I was able to take half of it home and eat it the next day. I was able to try the passion fruit drink which I also enjoyed. The service is good; the food is even better! I'll take this over Viva chicken ANYDAY! The seasoning and flavors don't compare! This is the one restaurant that is easiest for my family to agree on. I would say Mochica is between a 2 and a 3 star spot for me. Service is counter style, you get a number and your food is brought to the table but you bus your own plate. There wasn't much interaction with the cashier/waitress. The menu is up above the cashwrap with a view into the kitchen behind the register. I ordered a 1/4 chicken white meat with fries and sweet plantains. The portion is rather small and comes with 1 side of dipping sauce. The chicken was flavorful but I was wishing there was more of it! The plantains were good, there were about 4 of them. The fries I would skip and choose something else. I wouldn't make the trip to come back out to Concord considering there are so many Viva Chicken restaurants in the area with more options, better service and larger portions. It was disheartening to see more people coming in and out of the Subway next door or in the drive thrus off the highway but I can see why. read more

Fast, healthy lunches/dinners; excellent service; great prices; great music! Where can you get fresh baked chicken with 2 sides and a drink for about $6-7? Mochica offers lunches ready in under 5 minutes that cost the same (or less) than a fast food meal deal. They have chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp plates. A whole chicken with a couple large sides, salad, and drink runs around $20 - a real bargain for what you get. The chicken here is slowly cooked in a professional rotisserie oven which is so much healthier than fried chicken. The chicken comes out moist and delicious. Service is wonderful. The owner is always there making sure everything is done correctly and the cashiers are super friendly and helpful. Need something extra? Just ask, nothing ever seems to be a problem for these guys. Conveniently located near the Big Lots in Concord, this is a great place for a quick lunch or bring the family and enjoy a leisurely dinner. read more

Saw this as the review of the day...so we decided to give it a try. 1st off the address takes you to the opposite end of the strip mall (it is actually near Ride Now). So we go inside and it is a small place with some seating and very plainly decorated. We walked right up and ordered. The lady working was helpful in answering questions. We ordered and went to get or teas. ****the tea taste like Cinnamon*** so if you have an allergy please be aware. I had no idea and took a big chug...yuk!!! I had to go ask for another cup to get water (no offer to refund cost of tea). We sat down and they bring the food to your table. It was served on a real plate (looks like they listened to the ROTD and made a change). The chicken was a little dry and not hot like it had been prepared too far in advance. Adding the sauce helped it. The rice and beans (premium side) was bland with no added flavor. Overall just an "ok" experience. read more

Over-the-top good. I've been three times now and each time - equally fantastic. The mac n cheese? Holy to die for - if you're southern, it tastes better than your grandmother's - not kidding. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and has a great flavor. Very juicy. I've gotten the avocado quinoa salad twice and it's just so good. Everything - even the fries!!!! THE. SAUCES. Unbelievable. That is all. The most awesome thing about Mochica is the fact that they use organic and clean ingredients- including the chicken. This is very important to my family and we're THRILLED to have a place like this in Concord. And lastly, they're super accommodating and sweet. This was such a great lunch spot -- my lunch made me happy. We stopped here on a trip down 85 based on Yelp reviews, and so happy that we did. The delicious woodsmoke hits you the minute that you walk in the door, and you can taste it in the perfect chicken. The food is great but the service is horrible. Having a menu that shows items they don't carry makes no sense. They have an option to order online, which you pay for, is easy due to the language barrier. However, tonight they call to tell us they are out of one side so we pick another. Go to pick it up and since they are also out of that side, they never made the order. It's very disappointing that they can't get it together after being open this long. Viva Chicken may be a long drive for food from this side of Concord but next time the craving for Peruvian chicken hits, we will drive right by here. This is the 3rd time we've had issues. read more
