Ordered carry out Friday evening. It wasn't busy yet so can't comment on the service. We ordered Maryland roll, dragon roll, and bento A chicken, substitute Nigiri for California roll. Miso tasted a bit off. They forgot my extra ginger dressing for my salad, all good. 4AM the next morning, diarhea, all through the morning. I emailed the restaurant, the email bounced. I wrote them a message on their website. I have not heard back. I had high hopes for this establishment, I really hope there is an explanation. Price $48. Expected a bit more. Bento A was $22 by itself - never seen prices that high for a bento box. Tasted all right I guess. Location is decent, it's quaint, and parking is tight. Recent transplants to the area, my husband was here for a couple weeks before I joined him. He tried out a lot of the local foodrinkeries, and insisted I come here. Tiny space, very personal, not fancy or full of ambiance. Cold beer, Great sushi, and just the right amount of everything. Loved the staff, so friendly and kind. My only criticism is not their fault - parking around here in Wheaton is nigh unto impossible. Everything is marked with signs saying it is just for that particular store you're in front of, or everything is full. While the Spider (softshell crab) and Caterpillar rolls were decent, they were not exceptional and the Chirashi sushi, which is usually the standard of comparison I usually employ, was mediocre and uninspired. The chef really ought to check out other restaurants himself for comparison. Even the edamame seemed old or stale. And we did not realize until we returned home that we had been overcharged by $10. Decided to try this sushi place out since I was in the area and overall had a good experience. Luckily there was parking available when we got there but there is some construction and parking would have been an issue if we had gotten there at a busy time. Can't say enough about this place. I have been coming here for years and is consistently some of the best sushi I've had (including sushi hubs like Seattle). It is a small mom and pop shop and the sushi chef is top notch. The rolls are HUGE compared to other sushi restaurants and you can easily get full off only two. I saw this place got good reviews, so I decided to try it. When I went, we ordered sushi which was OK. It was nothing amazing, and kind of pricey for the portions. I was especially dismayed at the fact that the items on our bill were more expensive than the items on the menu. When I asked the waitress why, she said "We haven't updated the prices on our menu, but prices have gone up" I don't even think a restaurant is allowed to jack prices up on the bill with the lame excuse that "oh, we just never updated the prices on the menus we give our customers" I will never go back here. read more

Here is a review you can't write every day. The food is great, and the ambiance reminds my wife of sushi places she frequented as a child in Japan. They also do a tasty spicy Korean version. But more importantly the staff is amazing. We came here once when my 2 year old daughter was potty training. She was sitting in a booster seat, and forgot to ask to go to the bathroom. As mortified parents we began running around trying to figure out how to clean things up. But the staff here took it in stride, picked up and insisted on washing things themselves, asking us to just be comfortable. This was an awful thing we brought them into, and they were so nice and accommodating. Wonderful, understanding people. This is a great place for an inexpensive meal, particularly since your other options in the area are IHOP, McDonald's, and Dunkin Donuts. My friend and I split the chicken terriyaki and Combo A, which is 6 tuna rolls, 6 salmon rolls, and 6 California rolls. The fish was fresh and the portions were filling. The meals also included miso soup and salad. The soup wasn't bad but very salty. The salad was just a Dole mix out of the bag but the sesame dressing they used was great! I have to find some to keep at home. I would've given Moby's a solid 4 stars but slow service and the inability to substitute anything kept them at 3. And though they move slowly, the staff is friendly. I won't go out of my way to return but will eat here again if I'm in the area. read more

So... I've been here a handful of times. I've tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I come on the off days when the food isn't good? I've tried some sashimi, nigiri and maki rolls. Sometimes the sashimi is good, while other times it's just decent. The fish doesn't taste very fresh. The rice in the maki rolls are rolled on too thick, so the fish vs. rice ratio is off. The fish also has an aftertaste that I can't really get down with. The seaweed salad is a little fishier than I would like it to be. And they overdress it, so I have asked them to use less dressing. But they claim the can't since it is pre-mixed. Boo. Their combination lunches and dinners seem to be the winner here. I've had a bento with tempura and salmon and it was decent. Prices are standard. Initially, I confused this (awesome) sushi joint with the Moby Dick House of Kabob chain in the D.C. area, but was pleasantly surprised that not only is in conveniently located near the Wheaton metro, but also has a creative and talented sushi chef preparing Japanese treats to diners' delights. This was the first restaurant I ate at in Wheaton (the day I moved up here), and the service was excellent, the wait staff was very friendly, and the sushi was fresh, tasty, and around the price you would expect to pay for sushi (i.e. not that cheap, but you're paying for good quality). Towards the end of our meal, we were still hungry and asked our waitress to get the sushi chef to make us whatever he recommended. The special roles are huge, and our favorites are the Crazy Philly Roll (basically a deep fried Philly Roll with extra goodies and ginormous) and the Dynamite Roll, which is so light and you get all these different, wonderful tastes that just make your mouth sing! I've been coming here since before it was a sushi place. :-) When I was a kid, it was a dark hole-in-the-wall crab shack with this great jukebox and yummy spiced shrimp and crabs. I loved that place like no one's business. In this next incarnation, Moby Dick's is generally the go-to place for sushi in our little neighborhood. The sushi is fresh and good quality. I haven't had their bento, but I'm a fan of the nabeyaki udon, and the gyoza are like the ones my mom used to make. If they're frozen from a store, please don't tell me, because in my imagination my mom made them from scratch. :D The folks here are really friendly and welcoming. They're the kind of people who welcome you like old friends even if it's your first time there. Slow service makes me cranky, so we generally avoid Moby Dick during the rush hour. They get pretty easily weeded when the place is full. If you have to have sushi during the height of the dinner rush, call ahead and get takeout, or wear comfy shoes to stand in line. It is justifiably a popular place, and people sometimes line up out the door! We often go after 9 or sometimes early in the dinner hour on weekends, when we can just chill and relax with a Sapporo and unwind over a leisurely sushi dinner. read more

Been here a handful of times now and get say that it's just A-OK. Well more like 2.5 stars. It is a tiny restaurant but they try their best to maximize seating arrangements. The younger guy really tries and asks the tables if you're happy. I've been here for both dinner and lunch and found their prices to be a bit higher than other sushi joints and given that they aren't in Bethesda or D.C., it confuses me. Moby's also seem to drizzle their sushi rolls in sauce more than other places. I recently came in for lunch for their sushi combo special and the amount of tuna in the rolls were really inconsistent and small. Their tempura however is probably one of the best I've had. I come here when it's convenient and close but the quality doesn't seem much different of other places with similar prices. read more

After walking past it so often I decided to walk by, I ordered a fair amount just to try a bit of everything. There aren't many sushi places in Wheaton so I figured I'd give it a shot. Everything was okay. Nothing was great. Nothing stood out. The sashimi slices were a bit on the thin side. The people there were nice and polite and the order wasn't screwed up by any means. I have nothing bad to say about it but nothing sticks out to me. I guess if I want to go all out for sushi I'll need to hit the usual spots outside of Wheaton (which is a bummer because Moby Dick is really close to where I live and it would have been great if it were as good as the other places outside of Wheaton). My wife and I probably eat sushi more than any other cuisine except American, so we have a lot of raw fish stories to relate. Hey, call me Ishmael, we are definitely with the folks who give Moby Dick 4 or 5 stars. We eat there about twice a year while visiting family in nearby Silver Spring. The fish is always fresh, the preparation artistic, and the service friendly and prompt. What's more, I am a big fan of Uni (sea urchin), but in most sushi joints it is difficult to find. Either it's not on the menu at all, or else it is ordered only for weekend crowds because it is expensive and not many of us 'Murkins eat sea urchin. Not so Moby Dick; they have Uni every time I show up. And another good sign: we frequently run across Japanese nationals eating at Moby Dick. Those folks would not be there if the food wasn't close to home. I see some complaints about slow service in other reviews -- never the case when we have been there, but even in a place with only ten tables, the one sushi chef behind the bar can get overwhelmed. Plus, if you're expecting McDonalds-style gitcherfoodinthirtyseconds-type service, you really shouldn't be eating in a sushi bar. Either go when it's not crowded (and still expect to wait because every piece is hand-prepared to order), or do like we do and order another sake! read more

I have only been once but I was very impressed. I've passed by it quite a few times going to restaurants around there. I was looking for miso soup and this was the only place that looked good around the area. I decided to try it and its location is just like "a hole in the wall" with metered parking. However, I've been pretty good with finding already paid meters so that wasn't a problem :) The owners I believe? Are ridiculously nice!! As well as the waitress. Love their attitude and it makes me want to come back. The food was fantastic. I got the Box B? The tempura shrimp bento box. Sushi was california rolls and it was great. LOVE the mini salad looking part. Not sure what's in it but if all my salads were like that, I would be too healthy. Would like a bit more rice. Not a fan of what was sweet potato? Solid sushi place. The inside is kind of small but I do think the place is priced fairly. The service is good. I tried their crunchy tuna along with other rolls and I was happy with what I got. I also tried the mango mochi ice cream for dessert and was kind of disappointed. However, I highly recommend their seaweed salad. If you are thinking about going here I would say go during their lunch hours because they have really good specials during that time. Brilliant. There are many things I love about this place other than the fact its walkable for me. The food is excellent, its not exorbitant. The service as soon as you walk in the door is excellent and you usually get seated quickly. The other day it was busy and we were greeted at the door still and we had a table within 5 minutes. I lived in Wheaton for 16 years and somehow overlooked this hidden gem. I love the unagi here. The quality of the sushi is above average, the mochi is good, and in general this place hits the spot. It's a bit small, and parking could prove challenging, but these problems are offset by how lowkey this place is. You'll get your money's worth, and will not be disappointed.
