"Moby Dick" is a Korean-owned Japanese restaurant, a local favorite for my sister & her husband. We came here for dinner a couple wks ago - I had also come here for lunch about a year ago. The food is consistently good, and portions are good, too - you will go home satisfied. I ordered the "chicken teriyaki w/ soup, salad, & rice" for $12.95. As you can see from the photo, they give you a lot of chicken (delicious by the way). Salad is sadly iceberg but the very tasty ginger (maybe even peanut-y) dressing made up for it. If you order the "bento dinner box" version, you'll pay a higher price ($19.95) but get more variety - like shrimp & vegetable tempura, pan-fried dumplings, sushi, & a California roll. I sampled "the extras" in the bento box - everything was very good. I also sampled my mom's salmon teriyaki - also very good. Fresh fish that still melts in your mouth...oh so tasty. Why lower my rating from a four to a three then?! The service is so s l o w now. It takes about 5 minutes to get menus once you sit down, another 10 minutes to get your drink order, and yet another 30-45 minutes to get your sushi! O M Geezers...are we serious Moby Dick Sushi?! No matter if the restaurant is packed (packed meaning their 7-8 tables are full) or not, service and food are slow. Maybe they should hire another sushi chef? Food is tasty, so I'll be back. But, expect a long wait people! BTW...I'd suggest ordering to go. If they tell you that your food will be ready in 30 minutes, give it another 15. read more

Not sure where all these great reviews are coming from... but I do not agree with them. We started with the sashimi appetizer, then got the maryland, dragon, boston, Rock N Roll, and the TNT rolls. The rolls were all quite small and they were stingy on the size of the fish inside. The only rolls that I thought were decent were the ones I ordered-- the dragon rolls and the rock n roll. We then ordered the sashimi dinner platter. The pieces were small in comparison to other places I've been. As always, sushi is expensive. That's not even why I gave them such a bad rating though. They are just stingy in comparison to other sushi places I've been to. I don't see why people never learn... if you give a decent portion size that people will come back for, they'll come back... How much more could it possibly cost to give larger pieces of fish?? A plus to this restaurant is that the staff is very friendly and happy. read more

Ran a friend up to Wheaton to drop her off after Earth Day in Silver Spring and we were hungry. She strongly recommended Moby Dick and it was an excellent payoff. She described it as 'kind of a dive' which in this case means more 'hole in the wall.' It is small, and tucked into a fairly nondescript business district. The name Moby Dick does not exactly inspire confidence, for several reasons. But the experience was great! Nice, cute, clean place. Good service. Excellent sushi. It was a shame we were the only people in there on a Saturday afternoon (so another reason to go, no competition!) The gyoza were delicious, really a cut above the usual. We overordered thinking to take some home to the Sprossling (which I think we did) but we plowed through more than I expected. Really pretty, nicely arranged, good quality! read more

Hands down the best sushi in MoCo. A total hidden gem of restaurant! The Crunch Spicy Tuna Roll is out of this world. We also enjoy the Spicy Sashimi Salad, Philadelphia Roll and Shrimp Tempura Roll. Moby Dick is a nice find in the Silver Spring/Wheaton area. It's located in a strip mall and looks questionable from the outside but as soon as we walked in, I felt like we'd been transported to a small neighborhood sushi joint that may have been back home in Hawaii. The menu is simple and pretty much has all the staples of your typical Japanese restaurant - nothing special. We had the chicken yakiniku appetizer which we were both disappointed by. It seemed like they cooked the chicken plain, put it on the plate, and then spooned some teriyaki sauce from a bottle on top instead of cooking it in the sauce. The rating comes from the quality of the fish/sushi. The nigiri & sashimi both were nice thick cuts and amazingly fresh. We also both really enjoyed the udon - the broth was very tasty. Attentive service from the owner. I recommend Moby Dick if you're in the area and craving simple, generous portions of sushi. I'm not sure that I would make any type of trek out here, but if you're close by or live in the area, the quality of the fish is unrivaled by nearby sushi places. read more

Good cheap Sushi. Those are not words you hear running together often. Moby Dick, however, delivers on that dictum in droves. As we continue our "Eatin' in Wheaton" oddysey, we were reminded of this quaint little sushi stop that we used to frequent well over 6 years ago. We were pleasantly surprised to see that not much has changed since we were there last. It's a tiny little spot, with just a few tables and a modest sushi bar running the back of the restaurant. They have one sushi chef, who happens to also be the owner while his wife runs the floor. We sampled a trio of rolls and the Sashimi Assortment A (I've included a picture). There's nothing here that you won't have seen somewhere else, but it's all done well. The fish is very fresh, artfully arranged and delicious. We also ordered the Gyoza dumplings as an appetizer. They were nicely prepared and had that pleasant light crisp snap which gave way to the pork filling. The Sashimi assortment came with a great Miso Soup, salad and rice. Since the rolls did not, our server graciously included another helping at not cost for my dining partner in crime. The whole bill came to $45.00. Let's recap shall we? Gyoza, 2 Salads, 2 Miso Soups, 21 pieces of ultra fresh sashimi, Avacodo Roll, Spider Roll and Philly Roll all for just $45.00. That's a deal in my book. As I found myself in the heart of Wheaton, I do not remember if I chose the restaurant or if the restaurant chose me. Surely, the name struck me and grabbed my attention. Admittedly, a sushi restaurant named, "Moby Dick" is quite unusual. Most restaurants that specialize in sushi have decidedly Japanese sounding names like "Yuraku," "Momo Taro," or "Kotobuki." Besides, the mere mention of "Moby Dick" around these parts confusingly conjurs up images of kabobs (not sushi). Anyway, given the happenstance of my standing there, right in front of it, I decided to try it out; so, I went in, was warmly greeted, and ordered several items. The dynamite roll came first. Consisting of eight pieces of tuna, flounder, salmon, yellowtail, and fish roe topped with a spicy sauce, it was densely packed and of considerable girth. Fresh and ultimately quite good, the different slices of fish fused into one collective "body." While this disallowed an appreciation of the different fish selections as individual components (however, negative that might have slightly been), the whole seemingly made up for that fact with its fine vinegary rice and balance of flavors. The smallish yet fresh eel roll, paired with a sweetly tangy sauce, was agreeable, simple, and tasty. The dragon roll, which was next in line, offered up eel, avocado, and flying fish roe in a sparingly sweet sauce. Presented in a curved posture, mimicking a slithering, mythical dragon, the roll was, in the end, both visually striking and delicious all at once. Laced with decadent tempura flakes, the crunchy, spicy tuna roll offered both a fresh taste and a pleasing contrast in textures with its jagged flakes and soft exterior rice. Bands of spicy mayo, lashing across its surface, completed what was the evening's best roll. The meal, as impromptu as it was, was very pleasing, indeed, and duly satisfied my hunger. But, of course, as I sit here now writing this review, with heartbreaking images from Japan on the screen in front of me, I may have found some meaning in the name and the symbolism that surrounds "Moby Dick" (indeed, some thoughts with a sharper focus that supplants my initially indiscriminant musings about it). In Herman Melville's great novel, Moby Dick, the great sperm whale, is the object of Captain Ahab's vengeful obsession; but, in the end, it could not be subdued and killed. Representing the very power and destruction of the ocean and of nature itself, Moby Dick is seemingly victorious in the end as he ravages Ahab's vessel and overwhelms its crew. On the surface, it surely seems that Moby Dick, the greater force, is the ultimate victor. However, the novel's narrator, Ishmael ("Call me Ishmael") survives Moby Dick's attack and lives on, in superior fashion, to tell his tale (which, becomes the story of the very novel itself). Ultimately, then, a Japanese restaurant called "Moby Dick," is not only appropriate but poignant (especially, given the tragic events of the past few days) because, in naming itself thusly, it is really subduing Moby Dick and all of the forces that it represents. To name oneself after something is to have subdued it...to own it, to live on to tell one's tale. Therefore, one day, as well (hopefully, very soon), I am confident that this will also be the case for the Japanese people (that they too will subdue and own the "whale" that has ravaged it). On that day, surely, with a deep blue sky overhead and children running in the parks and streets of rebuilt towns and villages, I will be eager to hear the nation's renewed voice. That voice, dignified and determined, that will have written a new tale. read more

Pros - thick slabs of salmon on their nigiri sushi, their crazy Philly roll was amaze, big chunks of fish in their rolls Cons - food took a while to come out, some of their other nigiri was lacking - red tuna, flounder and octopus, speciality rolls are a bit on the pricier side (for example, their volcano roll is more $$$ than other places but i never ordered it so maybe it's worth the extra or something), come here for their sushi because there isn't really anything else on their menu besides sushi. *side note - to whoever said the owners are japanese-american, that's not true. Really great sushi for a very reasonable price! Came to Moby Dick Sushi for the first time yesterday with two friends and had a very lovely dinner. I'm very curious about how the restaurant's name came about but alas, I have no answers. This unassuming sushi joint is easy to miss, but if you give it a chance it won't disappoint! The shop is really small (only 8 tables) which contributes to a cozily-cramped dining experience. The restaurant was completely packed when we got dinner but it never felt claustrophobic. The staff is very friendly and attentive! They were always very quick to refill water and come to our aide if we needed it. The rolls we got were the following: Crazy boy roll: This was a deep-fried roll filled with avocados and crab meat topped with roe and some eel sauce. I liked it but I don't think I would get it again due to how fatty this roll was. Next time, I think I'll try a roll with some shrimp tempura in it to satisfy my deep-fry fix. Crazy roll: Every kind of fish imaginable (salmon, tuna, crab meat, tuna, white tuna) with a dash of cucumber. This was my favorite roll! It was really filling but that bit of cucumber gave it a fresh pop that prevented the fish from being overwhelming. I would absolutely get this again-- best roll of the night in my opinion! It's pricy but absolutely worth it. Moby Dick roll: This was filled with salmon, tuna, white tuna, and avocado. It was very delicious and all of the ingredients were fresh. Gyoza: The gyoza was yummy and came with a nice dipping sauce. We received 6 of them. Overall, I loved coming here and I will absolutely come here again when I'm craving sushi. There's a saying that you pay for what you get. Well ---- I think we should get more for what we pay for! While the rolls are good, they aren't anything better than other sushi joints, but you are paying a lot more. So for that, I just can't give 4 stars. Can't. Do. It. Right now, the plaza that Moby Dick is in is under renovation so it is tough to find parking and navigate around. Wheaton has very few good sushi places so Moby Dick does have that going for them. We ordered 4 special rolls including the Rock 'n Roll and Crazy Roll. The fish was fresh but these 4 rolls cost me $50 buckaroos! Great to-go place for quality sushi especially in the Wheaton area. Fair prices and their rice is seasoned well. Only down side is their maki rolls tend to be on the tiny side (uses bare minimal rice and fillings to hold together). This place has one of the best shrimp tempura I could find-- not too complex, just shrimp tempura, avocado, crab, sweet sauce, cucumber. It's also in the cut so you'll have to pay attention bc it's a very small family owned business with about 8 tables or so. The bathroom is very small and you'll have to walk back pass the kitchen to find it. If you're a stickler for public restrooms I'd recommend going before you leave home. I used to go here quite often with my daughter after her dance classes. We went back nearly 10 years later and the lady (I assume one of the owners) remembered us. She was excited to see us. My major gripe with this place is that the aesthetics of the food is atrocious. Sushi is an artform and although this is yet another budget mid-grade sushi place, the fish is torn and jagged and the rolls sliced in disproportionate sizes. I think they give generous portions, but sushi was never about portions. I love how they put extra pieces of salmon skin on top of their salmon skin rolls, but that doesn't negate the fact that they don't seem to season their rice! Most of the fish, if not all, is frozen. Fish is known for its slippery and tender texture and what I'm eating is rubbery at best. I only come here because it is marginally better than sushi at a Chinese restaurant serving sushi on the side and it's close to my home. The "cold tofu" is literally packaged tofu that is cubed then topped with scallions and bonito and with a watery tasteless sauce on the side (and we asked for no bonito!) The only thing going for them is the cute decor (maneki neko heavy). read more

Ordered carry out Friday evening. It wasn't busy yet so can't comment on the service. We ordered Maryland roll, dragon roll, and bento A chicken, substitute Nigiri for California roll. Miso tasted a bit off. They forgot my extra ginger dressing for my salad, all good. 4AM the next morning, diarhea, all through the morning. I emailed the restaurant, the email bounced. I wrote them a message on their website. I have not heard back. I had high hopes for this establishment, I really hope there is an explanation. Price $48. Expected a bit more. Bento A was $22 by itself - never seen prices that high for a bento box. Tasted all right I guess. Location is decent, it's quaint, and parking is tight.
