We didn't end up going with MK due to scheduling issues, but I wanted to leave a positive review anyway because I had a great experience in receiving a quote. Robert was very responsive on both Yelp and SMS. He also arrived right on time for a quote and we could tell he was very professional - took off his shoes, spent about an hour informing us of the procedure and answering our questions, etc. The company was also willing to work with us to reduce the job quote, which was very appreciated. The only thing to be aware of is that their prices run quite high. For painting a 3000 sqft house's interior walls (no ceilings or trims) the quote was $14k. After removing some items they were able to bring it down to $8k. I figure this is because they're remodelers and not just painters, and I'm sure you get what you pay for, but for most people I'd say this is above budget. All in all though, great experience! Although the build out of our commercial space took longer than I had initially hoped, it was definitely worth the wait. I own a small business and our new space is on Colorado Blvd in Pasadena. We have great street visibility and communicated to our contractors what kind of aesthetic we were hoping to achieve. We are at that age where we have to look out for our parents. Our aging father's house was in desperate need of TLC. The roof leaked, the backyard patio and pergola were rotted and falling down. Our father's hearing is mighty poor and he really doesn't have any know-how or experience in home repair or remodeling. Normally, this would not be that big of a problem, since my wife and I have quite a bit of experience in remodeling our own home, but here is the problem: he lives in Southern CA and we live in Northern CA. We both work, so we couldn't really take off and personally manage this effort. Somehow this work had to be managed by us remotely. Our solution was to use Yelp to find a contractor who would do a good job, listen to our concerns, and provide timely feedback via email/text (including photos of before/after work). A very key aspect of this was communication by "email/text" not telephone calls. I contacted seven Southern CA local contractors with high Yelp scores and provided them with similar emails describing the job including our special need for communication then began the selection process based on their responses. The winner was MK Builders. They were not the cheapest, but they provided a good technical solution and by far had the best communication. Our contact, Richard, was great. If I said I have lots of ideas/feedback/suggestions/what-if questions, I am not exaggerating, but Richard did a great job of responding. I have a big folder of email correspondence, including lots of photos. He also took the time to talk to our father and explain things in a down-to-earth manner. Summary of work performed: 1. removal of old roof and rotted backyard patio cover and second smaller shade lattice 2. repair of roof, fascia board, overhang where previous patio had connected to the house 3. new underlay, flashing, ridge vent & roofing and work performed with city permit 4. new outdoor free standing patio cover with partial open lattice using pretreated wood painted to match the house The work is now complete and we are very happy with the results. Like all of you, I read all of the great reviews on Yelp and was excited to use MK Builders for my roofing project. My project is a little more complicated and involved some rafter repair and replacement. I think MK Builders might work just fine for a simple roofing project, but they didn't work out for me. I hope to provide an honest review below. Robert was able to meet with me a handful of times in person and over the phone. Because my project was costly and involved structural repairs I had many questions. He seems like a good person and he could have been an effective project manager if the project got underway. Here is a summary of the issues that I ran into with MK Builders and why I am giving this rating: 1. MK Builders wanted to give an all-inclusive price for the roof and rafters but where they would decide which rafters to replace if needed. In the end I insisted that they itemize the costs so I can compare with other contractors. 2. Once I asked for an itemized estimate and asked other detailed questions and waited 1-2 weeks, Robert said that they were too busy for me... ever. That was surprising considering that we invested so much time on the estimates. 3. Robert had to ask the owner for any detailed questions and responses. Unfortunately, I didn't always get a response to each question and in the amount of detail that I was looking for. In some cases I got a response that the owner was not willing to do something. I wish I could have talked to the owner instead. I told Robert that they shouldn't take on projects if they can't see them through to completion. It's a really bad experience to invest so many hours and be told that they are too busy. read more

It has been a truly remarkable experience working with MK Builders with the roofing of our house. We needed new boards along to go along with the new roof. Robert was our project manager/contact person. I called the number and he answered immediately. A consultation occurred within 48 hrs (other companies have 1-2 week wait). During the consultation, he gave me an overview of the length of the project (along with the projected wait times for permit and inspection). A detailed estimate was provided via e-mail, along with a follow up text or phone call (showed willingness to earn your trust and business). Robert frequently touches base with you on a regular basis, so you are aware of what part of the project will be occurring the following day. He is also very quick to respond, should you have any questions. The roofing team was beyond excellent. Ricky was the lead roofer of the team. They are very polite,courteous and hard working. Ricky is also very knowledgeable of the materials that they are putting on their project. They work hard throughout the day. They bring what is needed for that part of the project (so they don't pile materials) and they clean up after each working day. The materials that they choose are top of the line. I had some ideas of what I wanted, but the materials that they utilized were way better (underlayment, low profile vents). They were also surprisingly quiet for a roofing job (my toddler was able to keep his routine naps without any disturbance). They always finished the projected work a day before the inspection (we had 2). There is always somebody from the company waiting for the inspector on days of inspection. The project did finish on the proposed timeline! Our house runs much cooler and there are no more asphalt/sand on the perimeter of the house when the wind blows. Price wise: I have had 3 other quotes and MK Builders are very competitive in comparison. The longer workmanship warranty (compared to others), was what first made me consider this company. Their professionalism and quality of work made that choice a truly great experience. Robert was very patient and worked with me on payment options so that I could have some needed roof maintenance done. I did end up with a little bit of silicone paint in my yard and on my fence, so maybe just discuss with crew members so there's a plan for empty buckets that doesn't involve flinging them off the roof. In addition, the crew member finishing my roof seal mentioned that he wouldn't have chosen to seal my roof, but to replace it. It was upsetting after just paying very hard-earned money to have the roof sealed - probably not the best note with which to leave your customers. They do stand behind their work, and have invited to call them for maintenance in the next year. So, overall I'm happy that I had the work done. read more
