He charged me $225 for diagnosis and said the valve is busted and will cost about $600 to repair in the first communication. I had authorized it over the phone. Then he forgot to come back to repair for over two weeks. I had trusted him entirely and this is where he took advantage. While the valve costs about $350 from parts warehouse, he later said his price to me was $1200 and said that is how the industry works. On top of that he said it will be four hours of labor at $250 per hour. He argued that he has been doing this for 20 plus years and any other technician will do the same. Luckily, I was able to fire him right away and also have Venmo return the payment for false diagnosis. I called up another technician for repair, while ordering the part myself. The other technician said valve is fine and charged me $300 for overall service. Michael would have costed me over $2500. Dishonest, unethical, unprofessional, extremely poor communicator. I contacted Chimney and Fireplace Leonel after they left a flyer at my parents house. I have my…read morechimney cleaned every year, and decided to give them a shot. They responded right away, and began cleaning the chimney. I asked how it looked, and they said it was very dirty. This should have been my first clue, because, like I said, I clean my fireplace every year and I only used the fireplace about ten times last year. I brushed it off as exaggeration and they finished up. They mentioned to me that my chimney cap and spark arrestor needed to be replaced because they were bent and rusted, and were letting water into the chimney. I trusted them and told them to go ahead with the repairs since I did not want to go up two tall stories to check it out. They came today and did the repairs. When they lowered the cap and spark arrestor, I noticed there was no rusting at all, and the parts were not bent. I confronted them and they could not reply with anything logical and went as far as to say animals were getting into the chimney from the mesh around the spark arrestor. I told them we never had any animals in the chimney to which he changed his tune to well animals could get in. Bottom line is that they didn't know that I'm a contractor. I use to install Marco fireplaces back in the 90's. Same prefabricated type of system. They were not truthful thinking I wouldn't check the pieces when they came down. This was really stupid of them considering that I would have recommended them to my friends with cabins up in Wrightwood and Pine Mtn. Club. I will make sure the word gets spread about these guys. Apparently the son has taken the business over from his father, I wonder if the father will be happy about this?

The gas logs in my new-to-me house were "red-tagged" by The Gas Company because my chimney was…read moredirty. So I had it cleaned by Oliver Twist around late 2010. I guess they did a good job, but they also told me that my 40 year-old chimney needed $475 worth of repairs. That seemed like a lot, so I wanted to get some other bids. It's hard to even FIND chimney repair contractors or even masons, let alone show up for an estimate, so even fewer can actually provide a bid! Alfredo did show up and gave me an estimate on the spot. I was extremely impressed by his knowledge about chimneys. After he came to do the job, I was very impressed with his integrity. In the course of the repair, he wound up breaking a few clay roof tiles. He brought this to my attention and had to take more time to make a second trip to my house just to replace the tiles. Alfredo seems to work in the style of an old-world craftsman. He may indeed be the top chimney guy in LA County. As a result, he seems to be very much in demand and for some fairly large projects as well. Fireplaces seem to get used a lot from Thanksgiving to the end of the year, which makes it tough to get him booked in that time frame, so plan accordingly and call well in advance.
