During lunch time you can find all the Mixt Greens having lines of business dressed workers trailing out of its doors. If I see the kitchen lines I follow. Mixt Greens offers a wide variety of salads and several sandwiches that range from $9-12. The salads are served via salad counter. Although there are many line cooks waiting to take your order the line doesn't move as briskly as I would have thought. I think the main reason for the slowness is that there are only two cashiers. I ordered a seasonal salad "heirloom". It's composed of mixed greens, sweet corn, heirloom tomatoes, figs, vinaigrette, and goat cheese. They also give you a choice of how much dressing you'd like as well as a slice of bread. It's a good salad and the bread is good. I just wish some of the elements were more prominent and of great portion especially the tomatoes. Something was lacking. For being a ten dollar salad I expect more of a wow and satisfaction. ____ If you're hungry it'd be best to order the salads with meat in it. FYI - The entrance is in the little alley, even though their claimed address is 475 Sansome. I've been here a few times with co-workers to grab lunch and bring it back to the office. The line generally moves pretty quick, even though it sometimes has a Disneyland feel to it as it snakes back and forth. I had a "sandwich" today. In reality, it was a salad with some bread thrown in by the time I got back to my office. They made no attempt to get the sandwich to stick together, so I ended up eating most of it with a fork, and munching the bread separately It was $12 with a beverage. They take plastic, and give you a frequent buyer card - buy 10, get one free! The food is good, it's not cheap, but I feel like this is a situation where you get what you pay for. The dressing was delightfully tangy and there was a mix of grown up flavors. This was not ranch dressing drowning a bed of iceberg lettuce with one slice of tomato and four stale croutons. I finally made my way to mixt greens one day in a salad-eating mood and found myself waiting in a long snake line of both guys and girls, while I debated which salad I wanted from a pretty diverse assortment of ingredients. Created my own salad for $7.88 (after tax). I chose 4 staples: Carrots, cucumbers, edemame, red onions and one specialty: marinated tofu with Cilantro jalapeño vinaigrette and the mixt greens. I usually don't like eating salads for lunch because 1) they never fill me up and 2) they're usually very boring and unsatisfying. Salads are overpriced and not that great. The line is ALWAYS long. They are pretty slow and unconcerned about the fact that people are on lunch break, which means we're pressed for time. And today, after waiting in line for 20 minutes, I finally get to the front of the airport security-esque line and they've already run out of grilled tuna, which is pretty much the only thing I wanted from there. Very rarely does one find a place so in line with their ideals, be it a restaurant, art gallery, daycare, who knows...Today, I fell in love with a salad place. Not just any salad place though, the once thought overpriced salad place that I've avoided for the past six months. Well, today I felt like something light to eat and all I could think of was salad at Mixt Greens. So, I looked online, got the nutritional info that I wanted, saw all the ingredients in what I wanted and headed off to the location. I walked into the space, which is gorgeous and very clean, and they were playing MJ which brightened my "I work in SF and its uber cold mood" and I got ready to order. The person who took my order was super nice and I love how they mix it right in front of you. I got a Caesar no chicken and he intuitively knew to ask if I wanted anchovies, which I didn't, so I was appreciative of that. The employees at the front were nice and everyone just had a good vibe. Taste wise, YUMMY, I asked for light dressing and all my lettuce tastes of Caesar but not overly so (and really not underly so either.) And, two pieces of fresh wheat sourdough on the side! I had my first Mixt Greens experience today. They have a large menu of salads you can choose from, along with the ability to customize/make your own. There are also sandwiches, though I'm guessing most of the people who come here order the salads. I tried the Cowboy salad (romaine hearts, grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, black beans, sharp cheddar, red onion, point reyes blue cheese dressing with a chipotle honey drizzle) today. I must say it was quite delicious. And you get a generous amount (enough for lunch and an afternoon snack). My only knock so far against this place is the prices. The salad I had today cost a bit over $10 after taxes, not what I'd normally want to pay for a salad. If you want the salad with tuna or flat-iron steak, it'll cost you around $12-14. You tell them what you want, and they'll make it for you. The ingredients are very obviously fresh. The salad was definitely very tasty, so I'll certainly come back for more...just not everyday, as I'd easily go broke. read more

Ahhh yes. Great lunch spot in SOMA. However - come at peak time at your own risk. If you come between 12 and 1, you'll wait in line for about 20 minutes, maybe more. Prices are okay. It's around $8 for a gigantic salad (usually enough for two servings). There are house made salads on the menu, or you can create your own. Beware though of your mix ins - you get up to $3.50 worth (that will make more sense when you see how the menu is laid out), and if you go over, it can be anywhere from an additional 50 cents to $2 per additional topping. I've accidentally left with a $12 salad, and wanted to kick myself. Instead, I just didn't eat for the next two days, because I couldn't afford to. What's great is that you can really create your dream salad here (I'm aware that was a really lame / dorky sounding sentence). You first tell them what you want as the base (spinach, romaine, spring mix, etc), what kind of dressing you want (lightly, medium, or heavily dressed?). They have almost any salad topping you can think of. Here is a list of some that might not normally come to mind that they have (skipping the obvious choices, i.e. cucumber): sun dried tomatoes kalamata olives marinated tofu sunflower seeds pumpkin seeds roasted potatoes caramelized onions roasted beets dried cranberries baby fingernails* paper shreds* And more! This is just the apex of salad places. To echo other people, while it's expensive, it's also kind of not because you could truly split one of these with someone because they truly are about twice the size of your regular lunch salad. They're also amazing. You can either build your own custom one or go with one of their fantastic menu salads. My favorites are the Siam (which happens to be the cheapest too!) or the Maui which is so delicious with butter lettuce and thin sliced ahi tuna on top. Because this place is as good as it gets, its line can also be... as long as it gets. I try to come here awkwardly early or late, but even if the line is out the door, ne'er fret! We must have looked like salad demons, the three of us huddled around three almost as large as our heads containers full of greens, kale, chicken, tuna, mango and more. Between my two colleagues and I we'd ordered three salads and figured we'd all take a bit of each and share. I don't think we had counted on the portion sizes being so generous and finding ourselves unable to finish each salad despite multiple swapping. The line almost snaking out the door most lunch times should be sufficient to illustrate to you how popular Mixt Greens is amongst the urban working forces of the FiDi district for if they weren't good, office dwellers would hardly return repeatedly. This place didn't provide the "wow" factor of what I thought it should. Especially when the salads were priced at $9-12 each. I had purchased the Maui salad which came with seared tuna on lightly dressed salad. It pretty much tasted like the spring mix that I could have bought from costco. Not sure exactly why the cost was so high. They mix the salad in front of you giving you a show. It's funny how all of the workers spill some of the lettuce when they toss the salad without any concern. It must be all part of the show. I come here regularly, but I've had it with the inconsistency. Sometimes I get a great salad maker who is generous with toppings (and by generous I mean gives me a normal amount). Today the guy barely filled his tongs with lentils, eggs, croutons, etc. I asked, "is that really all I get," and he responded, "yes." These are not expensive items, people. So I just ended up ordering it with marinated tofu instead of chicken: a little cheaper. The marinated tofu is really good, it has a meaty texture and lots of flavor. I loved the wrapped salad because it is filling without leaving you over-stuffed. It's a really well balanced meal with vegetables, fruit, protein (chicken/tofu and peanuts), and starch. They've opened this new spot along with their original store on Sansome St. and they both seem extremely popular (there's always a long line at lunchtime). I keep trying to love Mixt- fresh salads, and it's in my office building- but every month I give it another shot, and I'm super disappointed. Whether it's the Madison salad with immensely overpowering truffled potatoes, or the Siam salad with so much greenery I get a stomachache, or today's Dogwood salad which closely resembles a balsamic cole slaw with roasted vegetables; I go in hoping for a good salad, and I'm disappointed. When this place was couple blocks away from my work I thought it was heaven. Now that we moved like half a block from this place I feel like it's ok. In fact, I think I come here like once a month (not even maybe). The lines are always long in the summer - so go early (~11:30) I like making my own salad because their premade salads are just way too expensive. The ahi tuna one and the bachelor (steak) one is like $12. $12 for lettuce and like 4 pieces of meat? Not worth it. They jack up their prices because the whole concept is "sustainable/organic" ingredient. It's just how you package it. I mean I don't see a difference in taste between trader joes fruit vs. whole foods - but the $$ is noticeable different. Their salad dressings ARE good though (I gotta give them that) The mango dressing is supposed to be really good though I've never tried it myself. Amazing salads. I love the idea of this healthy, freshness. The line is pretty long during lunch hours but wait time is actually quite fast. I had the Maui, which consisted of mango, macadamia nuts and ahi tuna. The flavor was light and not overwhelming. Portion size is good, a bit large for me since I was only able to eat half of it, but I think my appetite just wasn't there that day. I like how they have a salad dressing choice in terms of light,medium,and heavy. I'll have to try the other salads next time. I wish they had a mixed greens closer to where I work now. I like the option of going to a healthy salad place for lunch. Some of the employees at this location are rude, but it doesn't make the salad worse or anything. Sometimes you also get the really nice people making your salad. Either way you get tons of salad for $10 bucks. Be warn there is a lady there with glasses who takes FOREVER in making your salad. If you ever find yourself in the Financial District and are craving a salad for lunch, Mixt Greens is your place. Here, you can choose from any one of their tasty salads on the menu or have one created for you. Most of the ingredients are organic unless otherwise noted on the menu. All salads are created at the time they are ordered and can be modified however you like. My personal favorite? The Nutty/Berry salad with mixed greens, strawberries, blackberries, goat cheese, candied pecans and balsamic vinagerette dressing. You get quite a hefty salad for ten bucks. I recommend getting here by 11:45 to beat the lunch time rush. Otherwise, you will wait in line for awhile. You might feel more healthy eating one, but you might be hungry again 90 minutes later. What brings the appeal down is the pricing of these salads - range is $10-14. If you're going to pay that much for a salad, half of it better be meat. In the case here, the salads are about 85-90% leaves. If you like salads and don't mind paying $11-14 for one, then this is the spot for you. This is one of my favorite lunch spots. I visit here at least twice a month, sometimes more. They have really tasty food, local and organic ingredients, and friendly staff. I've never once been disappointed with my visit here. There's usually a decently long line around lunch time - sometimes snaking out the door. It moves quickly, you're usually up at the front counter by 5-7 minutes later. Once you get there, you get to pick EVERYTHING. It's awesome. I personally get half butter lettuce, half baby spinach. The perfect combo, IMO. The servers are usually really friendly, and I typically joke around with them while they're making my salad. The base salad is around $7.50 I think, but mine usually comes out to about $10-$11. It's worth it. The salad is MASSIVE. I'm a pretty big guy, and I have a big appetite - and there are days when I can't finish my salad, and have to bring it back to the office. I usually get bacon, turkey, hard boiled egg, and avocado along with a few other goodies - so it's a hefty salad :) I must recommend the whole grain mustard dressing - delicious. If it's nice outside, they have tables and chairs. Slim pickins on the inside seating arrangements - only a table or two. I love this place, though. Do you know that feeling you get where you are in a situation that makes you feel like a cow? Well, this Mixt Greens has it. At lunch time, the place is crowded. The herd of customers often spills out the snaking line onto the sidewalk. Everyone seems a little stressed out in the line, and they fiddle with their phones and shirt collars and expensive purses to avoid making eye contact with others. There is a collective shame about waiting for salad. No one claims to want to be part of the herd, yet here we are all dressed in workplace casual in line for the same trough of greens. The greens are good and mixed my friends, but the prices are high. If you go the sandwich route, you are no longer part of the herd. Shoo, you rogue. Well, it is, and it isn't.. $12 (after tax) is pretty pricey for a lunch.. but MY SALAD WAS MAD FRESH AND THE PORTION WAS HUUUUUUGE! And it was sooooooooo good. Damn it. They got me hooked now. I got the Madison.. perfect amount of dressing and right amount of protein. I actually ate half and was pretty full. So this would be good for TWO meals even. FANTASTIC salads that can also be had in a wrap. I love the seared Ahi salads. A bit pricey, but it's understandable. The produce is organic and sustainable and the freshness and great taste let you know that it is worth it. Be ready to wait it line and sit somewhere else...this place is always packed. read more

Do these people actually like working there? The lady was practically yawning when I placed my order - maybe focused too much on yawning than actually listening to what I wanted. NEWS FLASH : MIXT GREENS IS RICH BEYOND BELIEF! Something about this place reeks ... yeah reeks of cold hard cash. In a time where people bitch about the price of gas and drive miles outside their commute to save a few pennies on the price of unleaded, you have a place like Mixt Greens that has found the perfect way to stick it to the consumer and have them pay with a smile. I came here to buy my wife a salad, some Dagwood thing with added chicken only to find out to get out of the door legally, I'd have to pay $12. My mind did a double-take as I handed over my credit card who was seriously wanting to hunker back in the confines of my wallet. Think about it $12 for a SALAD? We're talking lettuce, halved baby tomatoes, some carmelized onion thingy, chickpeas, peppers and balsamic dressing ... $12? How bout you sprinkle a little gold in there buddy. I've eaten here before and yes the salads are good but this mantra just goes to prove a couple of things: There isn't enough time in the day or We are lazy or Brown bag is boring or People are really making a lot of money or I'm dirt poor bitching about it You're right it's probably a combination of all of them. Put some fresh ingredients in a metal bowl, swirl it around like you're cleaning a toilet and sell it for $12. Why the hell didn't I think about this?
