I was worried when we pulled up Google pics of the joint online. We were looking for an upscale experience. There wasn't too much in the upscale department available in the area. This is a college town ( Ithaca) and the FLX area is mostly laidback and casual. But Yelper's insisted the food was great. So who are we not to give MIX a go? The building is old-looks like it was an old lounge they partially rehabbed for MIX. Cute, hip looking paint job outside kind of masks the 70's lounge architecture. Inside they have made some decor updates. But the bones are still old--bathroom creepy and small. Darkish inside. Rug needs to be pulled up, as there is an faint scent of old cigs. We, however, are outdoor eaters when at all possible (especially during COVID). And they have outdoor seating. We ate in the back patio-secluded and quiet. Not the fanciest, just patio furniture like from Walmart. Hubby got the Tasting Menu. I got the Steak Frites plus they made me a side salad (off menu). We shared an order of Soulful mac. Food came out promptly and waitress was attentive. Food was excellent! It tastes like the chef really cares about feeding people top quality, creative, and delicious food. Flatbread was great (Tasting Menu). Even my orange vinaigrette salad dressing was tasty. Soulful Mac isn't like "black folks soul food", but it's creamy and rich with brisket and a corn bread shell. Hubby got a beef Wellington meatloaf dish which presented beautifully. My flank steak was cooked well and is a great alternative to paying $30+ for a whole steak. The least fav dish was the dessert-shortcake. Biscuit and strawberries/sauce. It wasn't bad, but lacked the" wow" like the rest of the meal. Will return when in the area, for the food. We had a great meal with our 14 month old outside. Our waitress, Tina promptly took our orders and brought out cheesy rolls and dipping sauce. The tables on the back of the restaurant were spaced apart well and had umbrellas. The vegetarian ramen with tofu was delicious. Our toddler had the kids pasta meal. Wait a minute, I can't give 6 stars?! Mix deserves it though!! My first impression was wow, just wow. Lots of seating in the front and back. There's also an outdoor area with a fire pit. There were a few patrons, definitely not crowded at 2pm on a Wednesday. I love the music selection (Jazz, Blues, R&B). Everything about the ambiance was cozy, organized and clean. Our waiter, Tristan, was super professional and helpful. He was quick to understand what I was asking for and tried to up-sell as he should. He brought out water and glasses; I loved the sliced cucumber touch. Both meals we ordered were phenomenal! My 26 egg omelette (maybe 20 ) was filled full of crab and cheese. I didn't leave hungry with all of the side items included. The plate barely held so many items and my side of gravy was a loner do to the massive amount of food. This is my first time in Ithaca & I was told by my husband we had to check this place out. So glad we did! They had the cutest front patio but due to the rain, we opted for a table inside I was pleasantly surprised by the arty vibe & friendly staff. Then they brought out this delicious popovers situation complete with dipping suace. I honestly could have made that my meal, but we ordered a few sharable items for the table. Enjoyed every tasty morsel but the highlight was the mac n cheese! My only regret is that I didn't leave room for dessert. Every meal here has been a delight. The bread is my favorite part and honestly what keeps me coming back. Everything on the menu that I've ordered has been amazing. The duck confit is next level, the mussels are great' the Thai style are my favorite. Octopus was tender and delicious. Anytime someone's suggests this place it's an instant yes. First off, this is really more of a 2.5 star review, but I can't in good conscience give it a three. We stopped in about 2 hours before closing on a Thursday. There were a decent number of empty tables, but our server looked harried enough to give me the impression that they were really understaffed. They were personable enough, but had a distinct "juggling plates" vibe. I ordered a steak and soda; my wife ordered two small plates. Up to this point, things had been fine. Sadly, it went downhill as soon as our orders were in. We learned that you get complimentary bread here when it arrived several minutes *after* our meals came out. By that time, we'd been there for a total of at least 20 minutes. When my steak came out, there was no accompanying steak knife. After waiting several minutes, our server did the "how is everything" check, noticed I didn't have a steak knife, and left - presumably to remedy that problem. TEN MINUTES LATER, I'm left with a barely-above-room-temperature steak that is now past medium. I had to leave my table and ask someone at the bar for a utensil that should have been provided twice by that point. The steak was fine. I'd probably have said really good if it had still been hot. After an hour, my drink is empty, Im eagerly waiting for our server to come by so I can get a single refill - no luck. Finally left at 5 minutes to closing. I don't know if tonight was a fluke, but the service was inattentive to the point of terrible - so much so that it affected the meal itself. If this had been a $20/person meal, it would have been ridiculous. At more than twice that price, it becomes inexcusable. read more

Mix, you messed with me at a bad time, big time. TL;DR my birthday dinner is botched. I've been to mix a bunch of times, especially enjoying their happy hour items. Their mussels could easily beat all restaurants within a 50 mile range. I decide to reserve two stars for their past performances. Naturally, after enjoying the restaurant so much, I decide to celebrate my birthday here. My group arrived and there was a huge line in the foyer, Saturday evening could be busy, but the hostess definitely looked like she was going through some stuff. We were not greeted by smiles but rather a cold and depressed attitude. I decide to look past that and just enjoy my food. I have talked to my waitress three times only the entire night. First time is at the beginning, she was taking our order. Second time is about an hour in, she came back to apologize for her absence because "the hostess is having a mental breakdown". Third time is when she grabbed the check. Why would the hostess' breakdown have anything to do with a waitress' job? This is my birthday dinner with five people, and we had to call other waiters and waitresses to add food to our order and refill our water. Two big water jugs were empty for a long time before someone finally did something. It was ridiculous because when we call other servers, they would say "let me get your waitress", yet she is nowhere to be located. The food was also a huge disappointment. We ordered a steak in medium rare, but we got at least a medium well. When we got the steak, there was no beautiful juices flowing out, but rather a dry bland piece of meat. In the absence of our waitress, we had to call over two other servers to finally have it returned. At that time, we've been waiting for so long that we no longer desire to have a replacement. I also did not bother to have them light candles on my cake or entertain any dessert. I only wish to leave. Obviously I did not get any special recognition from our waitress, despite that she checked my ID for a drink. She does not even know it was my birthday because she was never there. What can I say about MIX other than wow? We chose this place because we were looking for a nice meal out - something other than your typical casual restaurant. This place fit the bill perfectly. Our server was wonderful. We told her it was our first time, and asked how it worked since we were just ordering a few different plates in no particular order. She told us to let her take care of it - and she would have the dishes come out in the order that she would want them. Well, we were absolutely correct to leave it to her judgment. We knew we were in for a treat when we received our "amuse bouche". It was the teeniest taste of a Thai tidbit - a Thai chicken lettuce wrap - and it was DELICIOUS! If they could pack that much flavor in a bite, I could only imagine what would be on our plates! We saw someone else eating the Mussels, and so we decided to go with the Thai style mussels and a side of frites (fries). The broth for the mussels was perfectly sweet, salty, spicy and delicious. The frites were perfection. Now, if you take a perfect fry and dip in into the broth - you will be in fry nirvana. Yes, I did that with most of my fries. Now don't get me wrong - the accompanying aioli was good, but the broth was even better. I think this is the first time in my life that I didn't ask for ketchup for my fries. Seriously. Next, we got the Sriracha Chicken and Waffles. Yeah - sounds strange I know - but it works. I mean it really WORKS. There is also a side of spicy honey - and if you drizzle that on the crispy and tender chicken and waffles, you take it to another level. We also ordered the Meatballs and Sausage Arancini. I was a little wary because so far they were doing really well with more exotic cuisines - and going for an Italian style dish may have been pushing our luck. Well, I was wrong to doubt them. The meatballs were some of the best meatballs I have ever had - and I have had many versions of Italian meatballs. The sauce was wonderful, and the sausage arancini were great as well. By this time, we were so full, and dessert didn't seem to be possible, but - our server brought out the platter of "desserts that can't be refused" :) We chose just one mini Mixed Berry crumble to share - and it was the perfect ending to our meal. Just enough for a few bites, and we were happily sated. If you are in the area - heck, even if you have to drive an hour - this place is absolutely worth a visit. First time at MIX, super impressed by their small plates and the bread they brought out (Brazilian cheese bread with a tomato balsamic sauce-- it was to die for). The one small plate we had (Pecan Rosemary Crusted Duck) was fantastic, a little difficult to share but we made it work. My friend ordered a steak which she loved and said was perfectly cooked. I got a burger however and it was not what I was expecting-- two thin, well done patties each separated by a bun in the middle of the burger. It may look aesthetically pleasing to have such a tall burger but in reality separating the thin patties with an extra bun made the burger even drier than it already was. This review is for the small plates we had that were not what we expected : Asian Marinaded Steak Skewers Wok Fried Cauliflower Both had really strange flavors. The cauliflower was way too over-fried and sat atop a bed of what seemed to be a curry made with corn and chickpeas, with flavor combinations of bland cauliflower with the overpowering curry. The steak skewers were nothing special atop a bed of fried rice but not the kind we're used to, bland and oily. We stopped after those two plates because we both felt bloated after. My friends and I came here for cocktails and food, and we were pleasantly surprised by everything! I got the lychee mixtail, and it tasted delicious and was very reasonably priced. The look from the outside is deceiving bc the inside is very trendy and modern decor. The food was very different, a fusion of American and Asian and it was delicious. You do have to be careful if you have nut allergies. My waitress did not ask us if our party had any allergies when ordering. Thank goodness we told her after she took the order. Then she went to the kitchen to check on the dishes for us. I did hear another waitress asking her tables if there was any allergies she should be taking note of. So, my daughter couldn't eat any appetizers; the flatbread which had walnut pesto and roasted pork bao which had crumbled cashew nuts on top. I enjoyed all the food. If I had to sum up this place in one sentence, it'd be "pricey but worth it." Love the set up, great decor, but get there early or make a reservation because the place is very popular. Drinks were alright but the food is where Mix really shines. My favorite was the calamari, which we got at our waitress' recommendation. It was just the right crispiness and went amazingly with the accompanying sauce/pesto (especially the pesto, which was fantastic). Also of note were the Brussels sprouts (delicious and the roasted garlic just melted in your mouth), duck quesadillas (didn't get much duck but it was a tasty quesadilla all the same), duck confit, and key lime creme brûlée (may not be for everyone but if you like key lime pie, I HIGHLY recommend this). Scallops were alright but nothing particularly noteworthy and the Mexican corn had a good charred flavor but thought it could be spicier. Overall, was very satisfied with our dinner. We came here for breakfast after it was recommended by the owner of Thai Basil. We had originally planned to go here for dinner, but was closed the two days we had available, and he recommended coming for breakfast. The interior is cute and they have a lot of amazing glasswork and paintings of buddha. Our waitress was extremely attentive, smiling the whole time and pleasant as can be. The brunch menu alone is huge. It is one of those places that has so many delicious sounding options, it is stressful to decide. Luckily, you are able to mix and match what egg benedicts, so my girlfriend and I got one of each (tasso ham, short rib, florentine, and smoked salmon). They were each as delicious as the last and all unique from one another. The hollandaise sauce was creamy and rich, and it came with plenty on. I hate when I order a benedict and there is just a little bit of hollandaise. The breakfast potatoes it came with were cheesy and absolutely wonderful. I'm not a big breakfast potato guy, but these were perfect. We checked out the dinner menu on the way out. I am bummed we didn't get to spend more time in Ithaca because we definitely would have come here for dinner too. Unique menu items and twists on classics filled the menu. MIX was one of the best restaurants we went to during our time in New York, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I'm looking forward to coming back here for dinner sometime. read more

Made this a pit stop so we can get some food before we headed up to finger lakes. The decor inside was very cute (feels like Tao but not in NYC haha). They were out of the cannoli filling so we were very bummed out because we wanted to try that french toast. The fried chicken and sauce was soo good- chicken was juicy and sauce went to well with the chicken and waffles. Enjoyed a wonderful dinner with friends. Our waiter pointed us in the direction of ordering a bunch of appetizers/small plates to share as many of them are large. We had the chicken and waffles which was nice and crispy and had a lovely sauce/syrup that was separate so as to not make everything soggy. Soon as it arrived the presentation itself was beautiful. Too pretty to eat. The butter rich hollandaise sauce was delicious! The smoked salmon (left side), had red onion marmalade and capers. The Florentine (right side) had braised kale, beefsteak tomato, cremini mushrooms both Benedicts were on top of a toasted on an English muffin. The flavors were divine. Perfectly made. The English muffin wasn't soggy at all. First bite, you can feel the crunch. The menu has a lot choices to choose from. From All American Omelets, Sourdough French Toast, Breakfast Favorites, Mix's International Omelets, Mix & March Signature Benedicts, Buttermilk Pancakes, Breakfast Sandwiches, Back to Basics, Vegan, and Waffles. I made a reservation and all they had available online was 830 for a Sunday. I'm okay with that. It was a last minute reservation but when I got there I realized the place closed at 9 and was practically dead. Like whole place was empty but 3 tables. Idk how I couldn't get a sooner reservation. I'm actually shocked they offer reservations that close to closing. My first impression was that staff seemed very unorganized. It took our hostess a while to seat us and we were the only ones waiting. Then we sat at our table for like 15 minutes before our waitress even acknowledged us. And there was only 3 other parties in the whole restaurant. Finally when we were able to place our order I first ordered the mussels and pomme frites. After about 10 minutes our waitress came back to tell me that they were out of that specific kind of mussels and recommended another kind. So I ordered the other mussels then after another 10 minutes came back and told me that they were actually out of all mussels. I wish she would have told me that the first time because now as I'm trying to decide on my order for the third time my friends food is now being served. Why would you bring out half the tables food when the other half hasn't even been able to place their order yet? The point of going to dinner with someone is so you can eat WITH them. Not just watch them eat. I ended up ordering the scallops and gnocchi which were okay. A pretty original and interesting dish but when you go to dinner with someone you want to eat with them. I would have rather not eaten my scallops while my friend just sat there and watched but that's the situation we were put in. And no one wants to eat their food cold so we ended up with an awkward dining experience of just watching each other eat because our dishes were served so far apart. This place doesn't really know what it is or wants to be as a conceptual whole, but that's honestly totally fine. The service and food more than carry the sort of strange decor and soundtrack, and it all adds up to a delightfully unexpected dinner experience. The menu is set up with tapas-style small plates as well as a few entree options. The night I was here we went tapas style with the following: - Duck quesadilla. Oh snap. I never would have thought to put duck in a quesadilla, but, wow was this good! Perfect mix of sweet, savory, spicy, chewy, crispy. Amazing. - Potato goat cheese pierogies. These looked more like potstickers, smallish dumplings with well-browned sides, smothered in caramelized onions. Again, a really nice mix of tastes and textures. - Braised lamb shank ravioli. Large pillowy pasta squares (beet pasta I think? They were pink) stuffed with lamb. These were good but more awkward to share since the dish comes with three big ravioli; for tapas I felt like it should have been like four smaller ravioli. - Char grilled octopus. If you like octopus and olives, this dish is for you. Perfectly cooked chunks of octopus and potatoes in a bright, briny vinaigrette. Light and satisfying at the same time. Four plates was the right amount to share for dinner, and they space them out so you get to work on one or two dishes at a time instead of getting everything at once, which I appreciated.
