The owners were there the entire evening, personally overseeing everything and checking on our table several times to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. That won't be the case here, because I'm a big weird cocktail nerd, and I'm putting my hands on your shoulders, looking you straight in the eye, and telling you that cocktails at 288 are very, very good, and not in an I'm-grading-on-a-curve-because-there-aren't-many-places-around-here-serving-truly-good-cocktails kind of way. The drinks here are well-balanced and tasty, but also INTERESTING, which makes this end of Lark Street with 288 and The Savoy officially the best place to get legitimately good and creative cocktails in the Cap District. The cocktails at 288 are good because the bar manager, Emmanuel, is an absolute pro: he was the reason that the cocktails at the late, lamented Speakeasy 518 were the best around, and now he's brought his expertise to 288. He's working with a much smaller bar here, but describing your favorite flavors to him and letting him surprise you is still a great idea. If you want to order off of the menu, the Commodore #2 (with house-made grenadine) might be my new official drink for fall/winter 2021. Really, though, you should just order whatever looks good, and be prepared to end up ordering another.

The interior had these cool flickering lights that mimicked fire lit lanterns, and there was lots of wood for a cozy intimate feeling. The lake view was underutilized though; the were seating people in the back half only, which I didn't quite understand when such a good view was available. There's also a stone patio with some seating but it was a little too cold for us to be eating out there. The pretzel sticks were great; perfect level of salt and paired with a good beer cheese. Mozzarella sticks portion size was pretty small; it would not be an app I recommend sharing with more than 2 people. I got the tavern salad and both of my parents got the roast beef melt. My salad was a bit bland despite everything added to it; there just wasn't enough of any one topping to carry the flavor through the whole salad. I added on grilled chicken and that was very simple, nothing wow-worthy, and turned this into an almost $20 salad. My parents enjoyed their sandwiches. My dad got his with fries and my mom paid the $2 up charge for onion rings. For drinks, my dad got a Jim & ginger, I got the 1911 seasonal cider, and my mom tried their coconut mojito. My dad and I were perfectly a happy with our drinks, but my mom was very unimpressed with her's. My waitress did forget to bring a fork for my salad and we easily waited 5-10 mins to get her attention, and even tried flagging down two other waitresses too, so that wasn't fun. But otherwise our waitress was very personable and kind, and very apologetic about the delay with the fork. The food quality that we got though just still didn't seem like $150 experience, so I'm not sure we'll be rushing back here.
