My parents' car broke down just as I dropped them off at JFK one evening (they were incredibly lucky to make their flight!). A friend recommended Mitchell, so a couple days later, after having it towed to my apartment, we brought it to Mitchell (who, fortunately, is within walking distance of my apartment). My boyfriend, who had had the mornings off that week, dealt with Mitchell entirely until the car was all fixed and I picked it up. He re-explained everything to me even though he'd already told my boyfriend, and he had had no problem waiting for us to make decisions on things since I was emailing back and forth with my dad in Europe about it.He was incredibly nice. Replacing a motor mount and catalytic converter was $722 total, parts and labor. He was very efficient. I don't even own a car, and didn't feel like he was taking advantage of that in any way. I moved across the country last year in my 2004 Saturn Vue, immediately we needed an oil change/routine service. After realizing that I can't go to a quick lube place out here for 15 bucks I searched online and found Mitchell's. He was reasonable priced and seemed honest. Great experience. A few months later someone ripped the side mirror off of the passenger side while parked. I called Mitchell and he said I could bring it in the next day and he'd replace it. Parts and labor under $150. Amazing. For the last few weeks I've had a check engine light on but had been putting off calling Mitchell, because even low prices add up over time. But it was time to get it looked at. I drove down to Mitchell's this morning and within a few minutes his shop realized that I just needed a new gas cap (mine wasn't sealing) he told me it would be cheaper to just drive over to the Saturn dealer or Pep Boys and buy a new one myself. I went to Mitchell's because my dealership told me the check engine light was on because of an ignition switch needing to be replaced ($750) - I wanted a second opinion since I needed the light off to pass my state inspection - Mitchell's tested the check engine indicator to find out the rubber was loose on the gas cap. He was very helpful and assisted me in getting my inspection done by a neighboring shop which took 10min. He's a very kind and helpful mechanic with a friendly staff willing to do what's right. I had my car towed to Mitchell because it wouldn't start one morning. He determined the fault was with the microchip in my key, not the car itself. Mitchell called another person who was able to reprogram my key, and all was well! He went above and beyond to help me out, and really didn't even make money off the repair! That's true honesty. He could have told me all kinds of things were wrong with my car, but he didn't. Not only that, he took his time, talking to me like a human being, not as if I was an irritation to him, or somehow too stupid to understand. In fact, he treated me like a friend, asking what I do for a living, and telling me about his own wife and kids and their upcoming vacation. I was terrified to go to a mechanic in Brooklyn (I usually take my car to my hometown for maintenance if I can) because there are just SO MANY of them, and the odds that a randomly selected mechanic will be competent and honest are basically nil. Do thoughts of aged juvenile delinquents purposefully F@#king around with your precious baby race through your mind? Do you have nightmares thinking you are getting rimmed out of hundreds of dollars for a simple automotive procedure? Well STOP WORRYING! There are plenty of great reviews for this man and his shop and for good reason. When I called saying I thought my car needed a tune up he ask the year and make of it. Once I gave it to him he said "newer cars do not need tune ups, maybe an oil change, new filters and wiper blades". He sounded like a nice guy so I made an appointment. When I got there he was very personable and really looked at my car. He noticed and showed me that my serpentine belt was about to snap. He also asked when was my last oil change. Oil change? Never. Mitchell took a look "18,000 miles and no oil change you are a very lucky guy". The oil was thick. He informed me of the differences in the types of oils :synthetic and natural and recommended synthetic would be best for me as it would help remove the sludge. After everything was done, in about an hour or so he told me how to take better care of my car and placed a sticker in the car to remind me of my next oil change. Mitchell also recommended a guy across the street to paint over three separate key marks on my car "where do you live, in a war zone?" he asked, "Manhattan" I said. " Gee you must be a real A-hole" he said laughing. Maybe, but at least I know a nice guy when I see one. read more

I have been in a horrible bind with another mechanic and today I found Mitchell!!!! After a timing belt nightmare that can only be attributed to an overtorqued bolt (according to every mechanic in the Western hemisphere at this point except the one who overtorqued it, of course), I took to the internet. I put my story up on a CarTalk forum and another Seattle mechanic's blog post about timing belts. The Seattle mechanic wrote to me personally and a reputable mechanic on the car talk forum assured me I was dealing with a dishonest mechanic. They both gave me very similar information and advice. I was so afraid to go somewhere for a second opinion only to end up in bad hands again and just kept wishing over and over I could take my car to Seattle or to the CarTalk guy! Well I googled "best mechanic in Brooklyn" and Mitchell's popped up (from a CarTalk link, no less). He had fabulous reviews and I also liked that when I called, it was Mitchell himself who answered. I just got a good feeling. When I called him he sounded just like the guys from the forums- corroborated everything they speculated about the situation, gave me advice and taught me so much. Well, I can tell you, after a harrowing day, this guy is my new hero. I'm not going to say too much because I wouldn't want anyone to take advantage of his graciousness, but I can tell you that Mitchell stood to gain nothing from me financially because of how entrenched I was with the other guys and how expensive (and possibly not worth it) my repairs would be. And still, he went above and BEYOND. Sadly, I am going to have to take the other guys to court, and part of me wants to spend the money on repairing my car just so I can have Mitchell as my go to mechanic. Now I'm just trying to figure out which are the best mountain tops from which to sing his praises-- I want him to have tons of business and I want other lost and desperate car owners like me to be in such good hands. read more

Mitchell is really great -- I took my car in with a vague (and hard-to-replicate) noise, and he was incredibly helpful. He took the car out for a long test drive, put it up on the lift, and made sure all was well. He refused to charge me since there was no problem. And he told me that I didn't need the unnecessary service that the local chain oil change place told me I needed. Really, Mitchell was thoughtful and honest -- and went above and beyond. I took my four-year old hybrid SUV to Mitchell's for a regular service visit and had a great experience. Mitchell is very friendly, he talked me down from asking for things I thought I might need -- he said they'd look everything over individually and see what it actually needed. It didn't need much (it's a low mileage car) and I had it back and it cost far less than I'd get charged at the dealership for the same kind of visit. Mitchell tried to charge me $1000 for a $100 problem! I had an old Plymouth car that I brought to Mitchell because of his high reviews on Yelp. He diagnosed the problem and told me it was cost around $1000. I declined because the car itself was only worth about $2000. I then brought the car to HAMZA COLLISION on Coney Island Ave and Cortelyou, because it was close to my apartment. They work on a lot of Taxis and Livery cars because a lot of Muslim taxi drivers live around there so they have a lot of experience and deal with lower income customers. I was helped my a friendly, enthusiastic black man who told me it would cost $100 to replace a fan. He had to special order the part from a junk yard, since the car was old. He came in super early (like 7am) the next morning to receive the part and installed it super fast in an hour. He went above and beyond for a small, low-paying job, because he loved working on cars. He was honest. If you do not care about money or being hoodwinked, then go to Mitchell's. He probably scams women who know nothing about their husbands BMW's all the time! read more

I came here after a bad experience with a disreputable mechanic. Mitchell told me exactly what I needed to have done. I have an old car and did not want to pour a lot of money into it. He fixed the problems I had so I could pass inspection. The work was done quickly and the prices were fair. He got the parts I needed super-fast. Well let me tell, not only did he fix my brakes, change my spark plugs and my timing belts but he did it cost effectively and timely. I rarely take the time to write a review unless a vendor, service provider, or restaurant REALLY messes something up or knocks it out of the park... Mitchell has inspired me to write a glowing recommendation. I got a few quotes on replacing my Subaru Forester's brake rotors and brake pads, giving it an oil/filter change, and giving the car a good bumper-to-bumper checkup, as well as a NY State Inspection. Some of the other places I called were $200-$400 more than what I ultimately paid at Mitchell's shop after taxes, AND he was able to get my car taken care of same-day with about 10 minutes' notice before dropping it off at his garage. First off, he's a really nice guy and great to chat with and recommended some preventative maintenance and care that I could do on my own to keep my car running tip-top between major work. Second, no B.S. upselling - he uses new parts that he has on-site and in-stock at reasonable prices (maybe cheaper if you buy it yourself online, but you're paying for the convenience of having it today, and right now), and his labor rates are cheaper than any other garage I spoke to. Third, the work was done well, and my car's brakes perform as good as they did when I drove it off the lot brand new with one mile on the odometer. Can't ask for better than that... I asked him to do a compression test on my vehicle, for a problem that I was trying to sort out. He tried to troubleshoot the issue using other methods. While I appreciate the additional data, he didn't want to do the compression test, which is a pretty simple procedure (I just don't have a pressure tester gauge, myself). But he didn't charge me for a full hour of his time either, so, meh, whatever. I still have the problem, but it didn't cost me *too* much. I'd be happy to go back. But I'll also probably check out other places from the Cartalk Forum. read more

This is a very honest and knowledgeable auto shop! I strongly recommend it for both minor and major reapirs. Mitchell , the owner who is very nice and patient, will explain and show everything to you that your car needs. I just got a used Audi A4. I brought it first to a different shop in Brooklyn for state inspection and they told me I need new rear and front break pads and discs. I knew I had to replace the rear pads but I was suspecious about the front breaks (I knew the person I bought the car from just put in new front break pads). I needed a "second opinion" and I brought my car to Mitchell's Auto Repair. He immediately, and without playing games, told me my front breaks and discs are perfectly fine and don't need to be replaced. He saved me almost $400 I was about to waste on the other (dishonest) auto shop. Thanks Mitchell for preventing me from wasting a lot of money on unnecessary repairs! I met Mitch about 15 years ago. I would drive by his shop on the way to work and see a beautiful Fiat Spider in the driveway. I always had a penchant for this car because I had one during my youth. Mitch loved his car as much as me so I had to find my own. When I brought in my new used car to Mitch for a once over I was immediately struck by his straight forward honesty. I have to say, Mitchell's Auto Shop is truly the best I have ever been to. Mitchell is always there when I go and I think that says a lot. Being the owner he could easily hire a few mechanics to work at his shop but because he is truly an honest man and cares for his work and customers he himself is present and makes sure everything is ok. I took my car there once for an oil change...it was fast and Mitchell and his mechanic on duty even let me sit in and watch the whole thing! the price was also right, $85 for synthetic oil change and new air filters which i knew I needed because mitchell took them out and showed me how dirty they were. I also went in one other time because I heard a squeaking noise coming from my car and Mitchell himself took it for a test drive and determined my brakes may just be rust so he took it on the lift and too off some rust. He didn't even charge me because he said there was no real problem!! what mechanic do you know who would do that...but I did tip the mechanic who did they work. Mitchell's is the best. I went to him twice in the past with mixed results. The first was to fix a drive axle, which was straightforward and done in a day with reasonable pricing. The second time was to replace the front wheel bearings which eventually became an ordeal in time and money. Mitch initially said it would be done in two days, it was not ready in two days, or the next day, or even the next, causing me quite a bit of inconvenience. I learned towards the end that he accidently fried one of my abs brake sensors in replacing the bearings, so he had to bring in another guy with special electronic equipment to help him. When that failed as well, he had to order a new sensor direct from the dealership. After waiting a full week for him to finish fixing everything, the worst part was that he charged me for everything, including the abs sensor that he broke and couldn't fix. I just wanted my car back so I did not bother to dispute it' although I wound up paying a total of $1000 for what should have been a $350 job as he originally quoted. Mitch is a nice enough guy and a smooth talker, but I would not go back to him again, except for the simplest of repairs. read more

We bought our tiny, 2-year old Toyota eight years ago, making it now 10 years old. In Brooklyn car years, that's a long, tough life. It's it's a 2-door hatchback that's been on one 7k mile road trip and many smaller trips out of state, but mostly it's driven in the circus that is Brooklyn. It's tiny, easy to park, but no one hesitates to bump it, so it's not exactly the prettiest little berry on the bush. However, thanks to Mitchell and his very competent staff, our dinged-up baby runs swell. He never sells us anything we don't need, talks us out of other things mechanics have suggested, and has only ever told us that maybe we should get a replacement wheel cover and have it detailed so it didn't look so much like it should be up on blocks somewhere! (My words, not his.) He was right, the car deserved to look a little better because it's a great car (still putting off the polishing). I found Mitchell on the Car Talk website Mechanics Files the first time we needed service and subsequently discovered that a couple of our friends depend on Mitchell, too. We all trust him. Frankly, even though our car is cheap-ish and we aren't Park Slope elite, I would not trust one of the car service/taxi service places. Those guys treat their cars pretty rough, and we need--and WANT--ours to last. At 40mpg, it's a great buggy. As long as we can, we will take our car to Mitchell. And our next car, too, if this one ever quits. read more

I have to admit I originally I took my car to L & M foreign auto, but they were too busy to do the work so by default I ended up at Mitchell's auto body. I obviously cannot compare the two, but in the end I am happy with my choice. My poor little Jetta needed a lot of work and Mitchell fixed everything that was wrong with it plus some body work on his own accord (free of charge). As the other reviews stated they are good guys who are honest (I think) and do a good job (i know). I know choosing a mechanic is a difficult decision so I hope this helps those on the fence. Very honest man. The catalytic convertor in my car was stolen and I discovered this through mitchell's inspection. He did a detailed breakdown of all the parts needed and called to get all the prices. Been a customer here for years. Always good communication, never pushy or aggressive. Mitchell is super laid back. Never felt like I was being over charged or misled, ever. I am trying a new mechanic because it is a 30 minute commute to Mitchell and 1 hour subway commute home and then back to pick up the car and with two young kids in tow, it had become to much of an ordeal. Mitchell is awesome. Brought my van to to his shop about three months ago and van is still running tip top. I was looking for a a good mechanic after purchasing a used Astro Van. Needed brakes, rear shocks, and exhaust hole fixed. Mitchell explained the solution/costs and i got to watch him/Adrian do all the work on the spot. I also wanted him to flush/fill the transfer case with extra fluid I already had purchased. That was no issue for Mitchell. The car drove like a new car after leaving the shop with new brakes, rear shocks, fluid, and quieter exhaust. His prices were great and cheaper than any other quotes I'd gotten. He also recommended other shops for some things I wanted to get done in future, ie. body work and suspension lift. I would definitely recommend him to friends and go back if anything else is needed. read more
