I stopped by Mister Jim's in Chesapeake and unfortunately, my experience fell far short of expectations. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and was told upfront that it would be about a 20-minute wait on the grill, which I was completely fine with. But after 50 minutes had passed, I finally had to go up and ask about my order. When I finally got my food, it was clear things were not handled well. The fries were made immediately and left sitting in a closed Styrofoam container the entire time my sub was cooking. By the time I received them, they were a soggy, wet pile of fries with zero crisp left. As for the sub itself, it was about 90% bread and maybe 10% actual filling. It took three hard, crusty bites before I even reached any meat--and when I did, the flavor was disappointing and lackluster. Definitely not what I expected from a place known for subs. Their "Italian dressing" is really just a ton of oil with a tiny splash of vinegar. They should just call it what it is instead of something misleading. To top it off, I had to ask someone to wipe the table before sitting because it wasn't cleaned. Overall, this visit was a miss from start to finish. Long wait, soggy fries, a flavorless sub, and unclear menu descriptions. I really like Mr. Jim's. It's a no-frills sub and pizza joint that has solid food at reasonable prices, which is why it's almost always busy. So expect a bit of a wait on some days (especially weekends). They have a very generous delivery area, which is great for anyone who doesn't have time to run in and wait for an order. The hubs likes the meatball sub. We both like the Philly (chicken or steak). I recently caught on to the fact that they have good burgers, so it's been a go-to as of late. But I also tried the Grilled Pastrami & Swiss on Rye, which is simple yet really freaking tasty (the butteriness of the rye bread is sooooo good). We sometimes share some steak fries with cheese, but we ALWAYS get a couple of cookies. They're fresh and fabulous! There's a reason this spot has been around literally my entire life. We love Mr. Jim's angus burger. Almost a weekly event. Then Boom - we tried the cheesesteak with extra meat (it was a ton of meat). My wife says the following: Chesapeake has a winner Mr Jim's cheesesteak is a 10 (of 1-10 (10 being the best). Virginia Beach it's either Iggles or Gino's on General Booth. Iggles gets a 8 and Gino's a 9. This is a huge day!!! The folks working at Mr. Jim's are amazing and reminds us of Shalers in NY (a kid memory). I first tasted a Mr. Jim's Special (submarine sandwich) thirty years ago, when I was in high school. A group of us were driving somewhere in Chesapeake, and the older boy who was driving us recommended we stop at Mr. Jim's for lunch; apparently he'd worked there in the past, and said it was really good -- and he especially endorsed the Special. He was not wrong, and I was immediately a fan for life (the Special is best when you get it with both the sweet and spicy peppers). I don't live in Chesapeake, and only get down to the Great Bridge area occasionally. But if it's lunch or supper time when I'm passing through, I still treat myself to the best sub sandwich around, even thirty years later. The wait time can be a while (maybe 15-20 minutes) if it's during the lunch or supper rush, so calling ahead to order is a good idea if you're just picking up. I'm sure they have many other good things on their menu, but I wouldn't know: The Mr. Jim's Special is so good, I haven't tried the rest. read more

After a few hours of going down a rabbit hole on YouTube last night watching Philly Cheesesteak places... I had a craving to try one.. Looking around my neighborhood.. Me Jim's appeared at the top of the list and they have been serving good for over 50 years.. so let's try them out.. First appearance, the place was a small restaurant located on the corner of a strip mall.. there was some seating inside, and lots of seating outside for when the weather is nice.. Ordered the Cheesesteak Deluxe which had the onions and green peppers, and a regular fries.. apparently they have 2 types of fries, fresh cut or other.. went with the fresh cut and order came out to a little over $20 after tip.. Fries were good, large portion, and fresh.. they were soggy by the time I got home... The cheesesteak itself was blah.. there wasn't a lot of meat on the sandwich, and no flavor. All I could taste was the lettuce.... It was nothing compared to the subs I saw on YouTube.. Leaving it at 3 stars for now, will definitely give this place another chance just to ensure I did not catch them on an off day. read more

Decided to give this place a try even though i've been reluctant based off the reviews. Zero issues with service and even provided a nice gratuity even though this place doesn't have waiters/waitresses. Can't speak on everything on the menu but the cheesesteak(80% bread) pizza, and chicken tenders were god awful, fries were ok and it's hard to f**k up mozzarella sticks. Atleast i can say i tried it but have no intention on going back for that lackluster food. read more

We love Mister Jim's! All of our family and friends who come to visit from out of state look forward to eating here. Up until recently it was the only restaurant our really picky 4 year old would eat at, until they changed their chicken tenders, now she won't eat them (says they are too spicy, there is some black pepper in the breading). We went to mister Jim's on 7/24/25 at 4:30 pm. Usually the subs are great,but not this time. My sub was soggy, no seasoning on it,and I think they put oil on mine which I didn't ask for. My girlfriend was dry,asked for oil,and they didn't put any on it. Idk what changed from the last time we went,but I couldn't eat but half of that mess. Mister Jim's is an original tenant of Wilson Village Shopping Center at the corner of South Battlefield Boulevard and Johnstown Road in Chesapeake. They have been a staple of the Great Bridge community since 1972. To stay in business for fifty years they have obviously been doing a lot of things right. They've managed to adapt with the changing times over the years and greatly expand their menu offerings from their original twelve items. They now offer everything from submarine sandwiches (including Philly-style), burgers, gyros and deli-style sandwiches, square pan pizzas, salads, boneless wings, appetizers and soft drinks to cookies and more. They offer indoor dining at comfortable booths and outdoor dining at tables under cover of a roof. There is no table service indoors or out. You place your order at the counter then pick it up at the same counter after they notify you via pager it's ready. At my last visit there were no paper menus available but there are large LCD menu screens overhead. Staff is always friendly and professional. On my last visit, they were very busy and it took about thirty minutes for my order to be completed. I didn't complain because I could see how busy they were and how hard everyone was working. As the young lady handed me my subs she apologized for the delay and offered me a free cookie. I really appreciated the gesture and my wife and I really enjoyed the cookie. I have patronized Mister Jim's many times over the years, mostly orders for delivery to my job but occasionally I'll swing by the restaurant and pick up something to take home. The food is always fresh and delicious. Some of my favorites are the Cajun Chicken Sub, Mister Jim's Special Sub, Tuna and Cheese Sub, Chesapeake Jubilee Sub, Sloppy Joe Sub and City Hall Burger. I also love the fresh cut fries and the onion rings. They have a nice variety of cookies, they are huge and really delicious. My favorite is the lemon blueberry cookie but I don't see it on the menu now so I don't know if they still offer it or not. Other cookies I love are the white chocolate macadamia nut and oatmeal raisin. Cookies are sold singly, in packs of three or by the dozen. They're all fresh and delicious. While writing this review I realized I have never tried the pizza at Mister Jim's. I'm not sure why I've never tried it but it is something I will definitely have to do soon. read more

Mister Jim's received raving reviews and my husband and I were eager to check them out when we were in Chesapeake. The biggest allure was their square pizza. Moving to Virginia from Ohio, where square pizza is customary, I was hoping that I would find something similar in flavor to my hometown pizza, which I just can't seem to find around here. Certain that we wanted to try the pizza, but undecided on whether we wanted to add a burger (which looked delicious in photos) or one of their subs, which they're known for, we opted to splitting a burger. We built an Angust burger with cheddar and all the fixins'...basically lettuce, tomato, raw onion (you can get your onion sauteed) and pickles, along with ketchup, mustard and mayo. And then we also ordered a 14x14 pizza with pepperoni and extra cheese. Due to COVID, they were not having indoor dining, so we opted for a seat at a table outside of the restaurant. It was a great day for dining out anyway! They handed my husband a little buzzer to alert him when our food was ready. I think we waited maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Everyone was super friendly when we were there and parking was ample. The burger looked just as amazing in real life as it did in the pictures. Unfortunately, it lacked any real flavor. I like my meat well seasoned and all I could really taste was hamburger meat. It wasn't awful; it was hot, juicy and the cheese was melted on perfectly, but it didn't give the 'wow' factor. The pizza left the same to be desired...a lack in flavor. Overall, we found the food to be just okay. I would like to return to try a sub sandwich, which apparently is their specialty. Heard this place has been around for I think 40-50 years, and when you taste the food you understand how and why. I ordered takeout so I didn't get to enjoy the interior setting, but it the food was ready quick and the price is pretty amazing so service is grade A. Personal pizza? Spectacular! The salad? Flawless! The subs? Wicked b*tchin! Every bite was an explosion of flavor and pure satisfaction in terms of texture! The two subs were perfect. I ordered the grandmaster 5 meet. Definitely flavorful even without all the vegetables! We also ordered the Mr. Jim's special yummy as always! The fries and cheese sauce is amazing! Such good home fries! And man oh man! You have to get you some sweet tea and hey grab a gallon of sweet tea for home it is the best!
