We were very disappointed with our food from Mission BBQ. Based on the reviews, we thought we were going to have some of the best BBQ in VA and that was not the case. The side of fries was expensive and there weren't many fries included. They weren't anything special, and seemed old and that they'd been sitting under a warmer. The chicken and baby back ribs were both tender but lacked flavor. The half chicken was pretty small. The ribs were fine but needed sauce. The greens were good. I'm rating a 3 because the meat was tender even though it lacked flavor and because the greens were good. Overall, I wouldn't recommend and wouldn't go back. read more

I'm a fan of the Mission BBQ chain and have been for years. First time at this Hampton location which offers a smaller floor plan. Parking was no problem, but I had to park a good distance on a Saturday afternoon. I was promptly greeted and order taken by a friendly staff. The burger spoke to me and first time I got one at Mission. The pricing was excellent! I added fries as a side. The dining room was spotless and surprisingly was not too busy. My order was called by name in 10 minutes or so and was correct. The burger appeared to be a half pound and had lettuce, tomato and pickle. You can add other condiments by retrieving them at a nearby cart. I also ordered a fountain drink. My cheeseburger was very good, but honestly too large. Everything seemed fresh and cheese melted nicely. The taste was yummy! Fries were a bit underdone, but still tasty. My ice cold Dr. Pepper was delicious. A staff picked up my tray when finished which elevated my review. I probably would not order the burger again, but only because a half pound was too much. The value was excellent. 3.5 rounding up. *READ THIS* I want to start by saying I'm from the south so knowing what good barbecue taste like is sort of in my blood. That being said it's not only the food that makes Mission barbecue great, it's people like "Lena." The warmest most welcoming woman we could've asked for help. She kindly and enthusiastically greeted us upon walking in and asked how our day had been. Lena my hat is off to you, you angel! We got to chat with the cooks and her while they prepared our meal. It's was good conversation asking what everyone's favorite dish was. Some food is good for your body, some food is good for your soul. Don't hesitate any longer and go get some of this amazing pulled pork and other smoked meats, and enjoy being treated right while you're doing it. I can not thank Lena enough for making my day and hooking a girl up with that cornbread, ~the kind of hook-up that restores hope for humanity~ kind of hooked us up. 12/10 would recommend to anyone who feels the need to eat so much barbecue and cornbread that they're in a bliss of food coma. My first time here... Honestly, it was y'all's reviews that brought me here... I needed to see what all the hype was about. I needed to try all of the top items everyone said was sooo good. Starting with the 3 meat platter. I opted for the jalapeno cheese sausage, juicy and the perfect snap when you bite it, 5/5. The turkey was boring and dry 2/5, because I took it home and slapped it in a sandwich the next day so that made it better. The brisket was dry and I asked for moist, 2/5, It was saved by dipping in BBQ sauce. The Mac and cheese side was decent. I sprinkled some old bay on top cause it needed seasoning 3/5. The beans were smokey and too much BBQ was added imo, 2/5. The green beans were just ok, the bacon saved it 3/5. The "secret black menu item" was grilled shrimp. When you dip it in the creamy white BBQ sauce, it slapped lol! 5/5 Had to try their infamous ribs, they did fall off the bone, but it was dry as hell 2/5. So honestly, the food was "mid" at best... After Sophia and I left AMC Theatres, we headed here for some lunch. I'll be honest, Mission BBQ was hardly in my radar. When it comes to fast casual restaurants, it's hit or miss because they're not local. But I did see this place has fairly good reviews. Sophia ordered from the Newport News location once and actually liked her selection. So why not give them a try? We walked inside and up to the counter. Everything inside was spotless and had a nice crowd on hand. Country music was playing across the speakers but not too loud. Up at the counter is where you place your orders. I chose a combo of a pound of moist brisket with a side of fries and a cup of water. We got seated where they had a variety of BBQ flavors to choose from. Overall, the meal was good. The brisket was moist and fries were plenty. Out of the BBQ flavors I've tried, I say Smoky Mountain and Texas Twang were my favorites. And they work very well for dipping fries. Our plates came with a side of cornbread also, but I lended mine to Sophia since I got full. Not a bad first time here and definitely won't be the last. The staff greeted us as soon as we walked in the door and made sure we knew how the ordering works and what everything was on the menu (very much appreciated as the door is right next to the register so you dont have time to read the menu). There are plenty of options for meats, including all the basics-chicken, pork, and beef. We ordered the Pulled Chicken Sandwich (delicious) and the Sampler Platter to share, long with extra fries and cornbread. The tables have a wide assortment of BBQ sauces to try ranging from sweet to super hot and spicy. It was fun to try them all. The specials is usually well worth it, but i dont always feel like spending that much. Standard bbq plate, if youre in the smokey flavor mood, cant go wrong. Bonus is the 6 different types of sauces for dip/smothering your meat in. I rank my decisions to eat somewhere again as: 1 star - if someone else buys it I won't eat it, I would rather go hungry. 2 star - if I'm hungry, no other options are open and someone buys it - I would consider eating it 3 star - I'm ok with eating it as long as someone else pays 4 star - I will eat again and pay for it and be a semi-regular customer 5 star - I will travel for good food and pay good money and be back on a regular basis and maybe even pay for yours just so we can go read more

What a great group of employees here still. Excellent customer service. They really do bring positivity to the workplace. This is an extremely clean restaurant. You'll feel welcome here, which is actually huge when it comes to dining. Always go here when at a conference. The pulled pork is delicious. Also the cornbread continues to be among the best. Not typically a chain restaurant kinda guy, but this place is one of my few exceptions. This is my second visit, but I was too busy stuffing my face the first visit to write a review. Top notch bbq that is better than most mom and pop shops. Super moist meats and delicious sauces to pair! The Smokey Mountain is my favorite with the Alabama White coming in at a close second. I'm glad that this place is just over the bridge as it makes it very reasonable to visit. Mission can be hit or miss. I've been there when they have hit it out of the park and everything about the visit was fantastic. But I've been there when I have to look around to make sure I didn't walk into a different bbq joint. When I go I'm looking for two of their brisket sandwiches "wet" and I'm not talking about sissy city bbq eating lean no fat but not dried out. I'm talking good down home style yeah most of the marble has melted into the meat but leave a little cap fat. And don't dip it in broth to get it wet that washes away the fat and flavor. Most of the time the sides are good the greens aren't always seasoned the same the pot liquor isn't really as rich at all times. And if you're from family that has been doing bbq out back for generations these consistencies are important because it's memories. Well good memories will keep your customers coming back. We all don't have an out back anymore to build our pits. So we look to places like Mission to do it right. Get everyone on the same page what I've mentioned I receive about 1/3 of my visits. I'm sure it's who is running the operation that particular shift. They just get it. Then when it's not that great it's the guy covering and maybe his heart isn't in it. And the excuse is always that's how we serve it. I'm giving 4 because sometimes you deserve 2 but other times you deserve 6. read more

Great tasty BBQ with lots of interesting sauces to try on your meat. I tried the brisket and I must say it was soooo tender and juicy. The macaroni is a little meh but everything else down to the cornbread was rockin! The interior reminds me of sixth grade camp with the long rustic picnic table chairs. The seating is open and plentiful. Servers are also walking around there ready to assist you, they also carry a variety of drinks and the best sweet tea ever. Another Mission BBQ that has been a pleasure to eat at! My son and I went for some BBQ after finishing up Christmas shopping. He got the pork slider and mac and cheese while I chose to try the BlackPlate Special which was Prime Rib with au jus. Holy moly! The prime rib was great! I do wish it was a bit more rare but I honestly can't complain. I cut into it with my spoon. It was absolutely delicious. The service here was awesome, as well. One of the workers came by a few times and interacted with my son. It was a busy time for the restaurant and they were checking with everyone to see if the food was good and if anyone needed anything. I've been to the one in vbeach on independence, and I like them both a lot! I like how they're so Military & public service worker friendly- their decor is very American and patriotic. If you're from Texas, you're gonna HATE me for this, but this reminds me of Texas BBQ. I don't eat meat that often or regularly, but when I had Texas BBQ in Houston, it tasted the same as mission to me- the way it's served & everything. The only thing I don't like is how you have to order everything separately. So for that reason, I feel like it's a bit pricey. We called almost all of the BBQ places in Hampton trying to find burnt ends. We were so excited to find them at Mission BBQ. Sadly they were nothing like we have had at other not local places. Instead of succulent, fattier cubes of brisket, We received just thicker sliced brisket that was definitely NOT fall apart in your mouth delicious. Although one order was just okay, the other was so dry the meat tasted powdery even coated in sauce. We called and ordered burnt ends to go but the receipt said brisket, moist. Never again!
