I'm giving 3 stars because I know the potential for this place to be great is there, but consistency is key. I've had Amy's Bánh Mì before when my wife brought it home and it was really good. The first time I had the roast pork banh mi but it was sitting so I had to warm it up and of course re-warmed up food isn't always the best but the flavors were there. The next time she brought home the egg rolls, and I was hooked! So yesterday I was in the area and I decided to go there for lunch. I tried calling twice to place my order ahead of time but no answer, no problem, I'll just order in person. The owners were very nice and welcoming. You can tell this place is authentic, we spoke about catering an event in the future, I definitely felt the hospitality. I ordered two orders of egg rolls, a roast pork banh mi and a matcha milk tea. It maybe took about 15-20 minutes for me to get my order... while I have no problem waiting for good food, I do expect it to be fresh if I'm waiting. Sadly this wasn't the case. I wanted to try this as soon as I got in the car. The egg rolls were crispy but look warm. The roast pork banh mi was not warm at all. The pork was roasted at one point but not at the time of my order. When you order roast pork it's for the crispy pork skin, the skin was crispy whenever it was made but not when it came to me. The meat was dry as if it had been sitting from the day(s) before. And the matcha... way too much matcha, it was very gritty and herbal. But I was hesitant to get that instead of my normal Thai tea so I knew I was taking a chance on that. In conclusion, I will be back because I know that this place can make amazing food. Both dishes I had, the flavors were on point but this day it just didn't hit like it should've. I've been to Eden center in Arlington, VA and had a roast pork banh mi before, I know what it should be and this wasn't the same. I've had their egg rolls before after they've sat and they were fresher than the ones I had after receiving my food five minutes ago, respectfully. I'm only spreading awareness to the owners and this is not to tear them down or defer anyone from trying out this establishment. No other Vietnamese restaurant in the area is offering the authenticity that they do. This was just my first personal observation, I encourage everyone to go give them a try! read more

I have been looking for a Vietnamese place and this is it!!! I'm so excited. I've been homesick for my mom's food and the banh mi from northern Virginia. The banh mi was almost perfect! A good amount of meat, all of the fix ins, and the bread is perfect. It does taste slightly different than the ones I'm used to, potentially missing magi seasoning but otherwise was amazing. They sell bánh bot loc, banh bao, banh cuon, and other Vietnamese foods. This will be my new go to place so I no longer feel as homesick. I didn't really expect as much as I received. The owner was so kind and courteous; we ended up chatting about his restaurant and when he started his food business. This is a cute new to go spot in the neighborhood. We brought our Vietnamese American daughter here and she loved it. I'm actually sitting in the waiting area as I write this review because I got sent out for round two l after we finished, but I digress. I had the meatball bahn mi, which was the right amount of sweet, sour, and spicy. I also bad the sticky rice which was excellent. The baguette is also fresh and the vegetables are pickled in house. Two things to keep in mind. There is no dining room. Also, many sandwiches contain cilantro, so make sure to ask to hold it if you're part of the 25% of humanity that has that mutation. There's a moment... and if you've eaten traditional bánh mì, you know it, where the bread shatters, the pickled carrot and radish hits, and something in your brain just stops. All the noise goes quiet. I tried Amy's Banh Mi for the first time today while visiting NewPort News and had a déjà vu moment while eating their Banh Mi. The baguette had the structural integrity of something that actually means it. Crisp enough to fight back, soft enough to surrender. On the inside, caramelized meat that didn't need to explain itself, and pickled vegetables doing what acid does best, cutting through everything false and leaving only what matters. The rice cakes? Herbed, crispy, wearing a chili crown that had no business being that good alongside a sandwich. Yet there it was. I washed it down with with the best tasting Soursop juice, 100%, no sugar, no artificial flavors and suddenly you're not standing at a window anymore. You're somewhere warmer and surrounded by the aroma of spices and flavors waiting to be explored. The owner was extremely nice and helpful in picking the best flavors to try based on my preference. New place with great food! Newly opened, they're still working out the kinks for service, but the sandwiches taste like California Banh Mi in the best way! The bread is Vietnamese Baguette, where most places in Hampton Roads use whatever sub bread that's available. It makes a big difference! Be careful with the signs for things they sell. If you don't know Vietnamese, you may think you're buying something that you're not. Like some desserts were behind signs and prices for Banh Cuon. They have an assortment of Vietnamese desserts too (Banh Bo, Che Dau Trang, Che Banh Lot) that you don't find in the area often. We asked for a Tofu Banh Mi that wasn't on the menu, but they had no problem making a vegetarian banh mi (Banh Mi Chay). Give them a try, they are super friendly and working really hard! Two things i want to talk about the Banh mi is the bread and the meat! This is the only banh mi place in the 757 that makes their bread! It was crispy outside and soft inside.
