Extremely disappointing customer service. We arrived at 8:20 PM ready to dine in, only to be turned away and told the dining room was closed even though the posted closing time is 9:00 PM. They claimed they closed at 8:15, which made no sense, especially when they still offered takeout only. If dine-in service ends that early, it should be clearly communicated. I ordered some pho to-go, the #4 Pho Tai, Nam, Gau and a beef banh mi. The broth was very fragrant and still hot but it lacked salt. When you dip the steak into the hoisin and sriracha it adds some more flavor though. This was probably the only Pho 79 beef broth that was sort of bland but not completely bad. The beef banh mi tasted almost like kbbq and was delicious. The bread wasn't too toasted or hard either. Can't say much about the service since I got my order delivered but they accommodated my request for extra butter and jalapeños added into the banh mi, which btw is a game changer. So, for whatever reason I had a massive craving for Pho a week or so ago, and I was in the area. Searched this up and decided to stop in. I've been to other Pho 79 locations and been...well, underwhelmed. So I wasn't sure how it would go. But I have a recurring meeting over in this area, so I actually ended up stopping in three times over the past couple weeks. They have a nice upgraded bar area and the restroom was very clean. The booths are a little old and dingy, but the service is quick. I ordered the Pho Tai because that's always what I get to judge a place - and on the first visit, it was legit! The meat was perfect, the broth was fantastic. Second visit, overcooked. Third visit back to the first time, plus I tried out the spring rolls which were really delicious. On each occasion I tried to order crab rangoon, and was informed they were out on every single visit. Overall, I like this place and will probably keep coming back since it's convenient for where I'm at - but I wouldn't put it as my favorite Pho place on the peninsula. read more

Pho 79, located in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach is one of my all time favorites. I like the layout of this restaurant and the food is very good. This is not Vietnamese food. Banh mi is soft and doesn't have the crunch it should have. No pate. The only good thing was that they had cheese head which no other place in Hampton or Newport News have. There's not that much meat in the sandwich either but it's $7.5 and nothing compared to the $5 banh mi up in NOVA that has way much more filling. The bun Bo hue was absolutely terrible. The broth tasted like water and wasn't even spicy. The bun (noodles) were also undercooked. The bowl was also really really small and super expensive. Overall this place at least has the proper meat in their dishes but their flavors and textures are all wrong.The servers were really nice though. Food is ALWAYS great but definitely on the pricier side. I eat at this establishment atleast once or twice a week. The service is always quick and the protein and toppings that they provide is always fresh. My favorite menu items are P4 as you get a great serving of protein, rocket shrimp, fried rice, stir fry egg noodles, and the wings. I love this place because it is close to work and easy for my collegues and I to get a delucious meal for a good price ans walk away full and satiated. Pho 79 in Hampton is conveniently located right across from Peninsula Town Center and is a great place to grab a quick lunch or dinner. The Pho is my favorite menu item. I almost always get the number 4 which comes with round steak, flank and brisket. The Pho broth is always tasty and hot. I like to add the jalapeños, bean sprouts, Thai basil and a squeeze of lime to mine. They have sriracha and hoisin sauce on the table if you'd like. My hubby gets the C2, which is their jasmine rice with grilled chicken, pork and beef. The meats are always very flavorful and grilled perfectly. Our usual appetizers are the fresh spring rolls or Vietnamese fried egg rolls, you can't go wrong with either. If you're in the Hampton area Pho 79 is worth a try! read more

After I took my girlfriend to a local pharmacy to get her booster shot, we decided to head here for dinner. It has been a good while since we had Pho so how was our experience? Once we entered, we had a 5-10 minute wait for a booth. No biggie. After being seated, we wasted no time ordering. For apps, we chose Fried Wontons which consists of ground pork and shrimp all fried with sweet soy sauce for dipping. Great stuff. Not greasy and right out the gate piping hot. I wasn't used to seeing wontons in that shape, but this I can work with. Basically you can eat that in one bite if you're lucky....ha! Next up for our main entrée was Pho Tai, which is basically pho with round steak. Typically, it comes rare but the pho broth cooks the meat in front of your eyes. And we also have the typical sides that come with pho dishes (bean sprouts, jalapeno slides, mint, cilantro). I ask for chili oil which adds spice flavors. Very good indeed. As usual, I add a bit too much chili oil, which causes me to cough a storm. After a good minute or two (or maybe three) of coughing it up (in the process losing my voice), I feel a whole lot better. All the flavors were present and I was full for the night. Only slight negative is I probably would've liked a little bit more meat in my bowl, but nonetheless I was satisfied. Just like the Newport News location, this one is worth checking out. As always, we'll be back. read more

Pretty Vietnamese restaurant/bar that I ate at while in town last month! It felt like an authentic experience and the staff was very kind and knowledgeable about the menu. Our wait for food was about 15 minutes which is pretty reasonable. I ordered the pho dac biet for myself. The portions were very generous. Normally I wouldn't be able to finish that whole thing but I was hungry that day and inhaled almost the whole bowl :) There were only a few pieces of meat left which I ended up giving to my boyfriend LOL. It was also great to see and smell the dishes of other tables at the restaurant; it smelled so good in there!!
