At the end of our paid consultation, I shared that I would do my homework and follow up. When I shared via email that I was seeing quite a bit of pricing variance online, East Bay Hearing immediately dropped the price from $7K to $5K. When I did further online research, and shared screenshots documenting that the Oticon Intent 1 was available for $3399 one place and $4445 at another place, they said they would try to price match. They later communicated they could not go lower than $5000. If they had been willing to improve their pricing even a little (to, say, $4800), as a sign of good faith, we would have likely gone with them (their location and service was appealing to us) but their hard line stance on the $5K (coupled with the fact their original quote of $7K was nearly 30% higher than their second quote of $5K - which they offered up as soon as I shared my benchmarks, suggesting they're regularly overcharging folks who are not skilled at online price benchmarking), turned me off.

I had read the negative reviews and I had prepared myself for what I thought would be a very short and dismissive visit. I have worked in healthcare for over 26 years and I am very familiar with these types of providers. I am honestly confused at the other reviews. Dr. Zeme and his staff were very friendly. Other than the intake questions, blood pressure, and temp check, Dr. Zeme handled the entire visit himself. He was personable and even cracked a few jokes during the visit. He checked the problem area and sent a prescription to my pharmacy. The problem is completely resolved. I did bring up another side issue. He did redirect me to the main issue that I was there for after letting me know the side issue is a non concern and the treatment would be more harmful than letting it be. Being in healthcare I understand refocusing on the main issue due to appointment time and insurance reimbursement. If you have more than 1 issue, let them know when you make the appointment so they can schedule the appropriate amount of time. Sometimes you need to come in for another appointment if you have a laundry list of problems. It is standard to address the top 2-3 problems in 1 visit and reschedule for the rest. Bottom line, I thought the whole office was great. Dr. Zeme knew what my diagnosis was immediately and all it took was a prescription to fix it up (I was worried it needed a biopsy).

After another long wait, and again just a few days before the appointment, the office called to cancel because an interpreter was unavailable. They refused to use AI translation tools or translation devices, and they would not accept an interpreter by phone or video call. They insisted on using only an in-person interpreter who was familiar with medical terminology. I understand how busy this office is, but if an appointment needs to be canceled or rescheduled, could you please do so as soon as possible? Calling only a few days before the appointment definitely wastes our time. If I had known earlier, I could have made an appointment with another ENT doctor.

On their website they even give a partial phone number to get a RMA (see photo). I'm not sure they are even in business any more. By the way, the hearing "aid" was so offensive in sound it constantly created feed-back and a shrill sound of everything else. They say that you can get a programming cable ($$) reprogram yourself. Really? I'm gonna throw more money at a lousy 'aid' that doesn't work? I don't think so.
