At the end of our paid consultation, I shared that I would do my homework and follow up. When I shared via email that I was seeing quite a bit of pricing variance online, East Bay Hearing immediately dropped the price from $7K to $5K. When I did further online research, and shared screenshots documenting that the Oticon Intent 1 was available for $3399 one place and $4445 at another place, they said they would try to price match. They later communicated they could not go lower than $5000. If they had been willing to improve their pricing even a little (to, say, $4800), as a sign of good faith, we would have likely gone with them (their location and service was appealing to us) but their hard line stance on the $5K (coupled with the fact their original quote of $7K was nearly 30% higher than their second quote of $5K - which they offered up as soon as I shared my benchmarks, suggesting they're regularly overcharging folks who are not skilled at online price benchmarking), turned me off.

He has one month old hearing aids that for some reason stopped working. I initially brought him to Costco. Big mistake, the woman behind the massive plexiglass divider wouldn't even look at us, specially when I told her he didn't buy them there. Not even an 'I'm sorry I can't be of help'. I could not wait one more day, as it was impossible to communicate with him. We arrived at Eartone and there were 3 people in the waiting room. I thought it would take quite a while or we might have to make an appointment for a later date. Rina greeted us and asked us to fill a brief questioner while she was with another client. In less than 10 minutes she was ready to help us. She assessed the situation and got to working on his hearing aids right away. She had to perform a hearing exam as she didn't have the client data to reset his hearing aids. She gave us the price and she recommended a special assistive device that was specially molded to his ear. She felt this would be very helpful to gain full benefit of his equipment by maximizing his hearing and it would allow his devices to stay in place better. I agreed to the price immediately as it was very fair. I'm an ER nurse, and know good patient/client care. Rina is a true professional, she was concerned and wanted to help. Her fees are excellent, fair, and will keep me coming back as I or my friends need it. A class act.

She had no idea why I was there when they wanted the appt. I had to ask for the wax filter as she was gonna send me home with nothing. I felt completely unheard and am pretty sure I was unheard. I felt the appt was unnecessary and I have to drive 40 minutes to get there. Very disappointed. I haven't had any issue before this but this last visit was horrible. Called back and talked to Rena (owner?) as requested. I am still very upset about what happened and the waste of my time this appt was and the rudeness I had to deal with. I won't be returning but obviously others have better experiences than I had so keep that in mind as this is probably not many peoples experience. But it was mine and I am still upset about it even though it has been awhile. Rena was polite and explained the person I dealt with was in training. So I hope if you go you have better experience. Odds are you will.

Being new to…read morehearing aids, I thought my hearing aids were defective but my hearing is gradually decreasing. He informed me that adjustments need to be made at least yearly and that applies to all wearers of hearing aids. I informed him that the cheaper Apple AirPod pro now can be used a hearing aid. I have been seeing the same audiologist - who also is an audiology professor - for over a decade, but she was out of network for my employer's insurance plan. Better Hearing Center was the only place within 40 miles that had the Widex brand I wanted, so I made an appointment. Dr. Mark recommended the Resound brand over the Widex I originally wanted and he was absolutely correct due to the advances that Resound had over the older Widex models that I knew about. I would put Better Hearing Center into the "hearing aid mill" class of providers. Dr. Mark is personable and took the time to answer all of my questions during my initial testing and delivery appointments. However, I felt that my hearing test and hearing aid configuration were perfunctory. And when I called, emailed, and asked for assistance through the app to tune my programming several times around 14 months after I got them, I never got a response except from the office manager who told me she would pass my message along. I paid my long-term audiologist to take over management of my hearing aids so that she can tune them for me going forward. She made some small EQ tweaks and one VERY MAJOR change. She showed me that I had the wrong wires (#4), which were so long that the hearing air hung down behind my ear so that the front-facing microphone was hidden behind it and not picking up sounds from in front of me. That may explain why I couldn't hear in restaurants using the advanced beam-forming technology that was the main reason for choosing this brand. I remember asking Dr. Mark why he didn't use the wire-length template and he told me that he had enough experience to not need it. Guess that wasn't true. To sum up, Better Hearing Center may be your only in-network choice, and going with them is not a bad decision. Just be aware that you may not get the right configuration or follow up care that you need until your insurance pays for your next set of hearing aids. I am 9 months away from that and may need visit Dr. Mark again for an upgrade.
