Great local bakery, been in McKeesport for over 100 years and going strong. Girls working the counter are always friendly and quick to serve you. It is a smaller old school bakery with lots of glass cases. They have a nice variety of sweet treats : cookies, pastries, breads, cakes, muffins and more! This is our go to bakery for birthday bakes. Cakes are consistently good from here. We personally love the white cake with raspberry filling. The cake decorator who used to be there is no longer so they are not as beautiful as they once were but they still taste good. First time at this 100 year old bakery. I was there mid day and they still had a nice selection of pastries and cookies left. Their buttercream icing is so good!! I had a snowball, a cupcake iced 360 degrees and coated in shredded coconut. It was delicious but messy to eat. A fork is a must! Their lady locks are huge and not skimpy on the filling. Minerva Bakery has operated for almost 100 years! Their menu lists desserts such as cakes, cookies, and rolls. Prices are reasonable. My family members are originally from McKeesport, and they have been buying desserts from Minerva for probably decades. They particularly love the cakes, and they often bring the cakes to family get-togethers. Recently, for a birthday party, we bought a chocolate cake and a yellow cake from Minerva. The cakes were moist and flavorful, and the icings were very sweet. The icing on the chocolate cake did fall off, but maybe we just were not careful enough with transporting the cake. A few weeks later, for a party at my house, a family member bought two more cakes--yellow and chocolate--from Minerva. The icing somehow fell off one side of the chocolate cake (that side is not shown in my photo). I enjoyed the flavor of the yellow cake, and I did not try the chocolate cake. This bakery is a true diamond in the rough. Their raisin bread is delicate and just the right amount of sweet. The chocolate dipped chocolate chip cookies are another favorite of ours. We recently tried their cinnamon rolls for the first time, and they lived up to the high expectations that I have for Minerva goods. It seems like you can't go wrong with anything baked here. I gave Minerva a 5 Star rating but I've lowered it to a 3 because the Apple Turnover's apples were very firm, they should have been baked longer. In my opinion any pastry with firm apples is a no no for me. I won't buy them again.​ read more

I came here after seeing the news story on WXPI of their 100 years in business. I came too late for the free cake, but did score some wonderful pastries - an eclair, chocolate donut with walnut topping and chocolate filling, and some kind of apricot pastry with cream cheese. The ingredients (especially the fillings) were fresh and tasty, and the pastries nice and flaky. The women working that day were super nice too. And perhaps best is that it's all very affordable. Beyond what I got, they of course have cookies, cakes and cupcakes. We stopped by on a sat morning and this place was bustling! The street was pretty quiet, so there was plenty of street parking. They didn't have a lot of breakfast options, mostly just donuts and danishes. There were quite a few kinds of each though. I tried their cheese danish, and it was delightful. There are no better cakes in the Pittsburgh area than at Minervas. Their Burnt Almond Torte outshines overrated Prantles by miles. The donuts are fabulous. In fact they have the BEST donut I have ever been blessed to consume. We call it the hamburger donute because it looks like a bun filled with the most delicious light cream ever! Then it is assaulted with powdered sugar to make a treat so decadent you will feel guilty because you know you will want another! Their pastries and breads are excellent too. You really can't go wrong with anything you pick. Minerva's understand that you don't mess with the recipe for success. They are in the same location for years and stick with the recipes that work. They do not mass produce or expand their business to feed the masses. They keep it simple and don't try to reinvent the wheel, just keep it rolling like the people that keep coming back through their doors. Named after a goddess yet stuck in a depressed and unsafe area, Minerva Bakery offers some of the most blissfully chewy, full-bodied, and definitively scrumptious cookies ever to be pulled from an oven. My sister brought over several dozen of them for the housewarming party Kay and I threw over the weekend, and they were such a sensation, neighbors were storming our new home like the zombies in the penultimate scene from "Night of the Living Dead" (the son of the director is an old schoolmate of mine from way, way back and was in attendance, no foolin'). Chocolate Chip and Dipped Chocolate Chip dominated the roster, but also on deck were an assortment of sugar cookies with multi-colored sprinkles and thumbprint cookies. The Dipped Chocolate Chip Cookies are half-coated in melted chocolate, much like those made by Bethel Bakery, and were the dark horse performer of the evening's festivities. Fortunately, our guests didn't completely decimate the cookies, so they've continued to serve as snacks and dessert for the past several days. Thanks be to my sweet, brave, and embattled sister for coming through with the treats. Unfortunately, she lives in the area. Hopefully, Minerva's light of confectionery goodness can revitalize the community she lives in. read more

I work at the hospital in McKeesport and ever since I started there my mother has raved about Minerva's. Last Saturday when I got off work in the morning I decided to stop at the bakery. I got a mini almond tort, jelly filled pastries and pumpkin cookies. I brought the stuff home to my parents and I tried the almond tort and it was the best thing I ever ate.
