Matthew was our server and he was fabulous. It can get warm in there so dress appropriately. Okay good!! Omg, amazing. The Amuse was an edamame gazpacho like dish. Unique and flavorful I loved it. Then the hamachi appetizer which had apple and pesto and heavenly goodness. Then to the main course. The rib eye on a cast iron with the anchovy mashed potatoes. Hold on, I know you're thinking ANCHOVY POTATOES?!?!!? If you aren't allergic, you must try it. I mean it's the same thing that seasons Caesar dressing. The onions underneath the potatoes underneath the steak and topped with the Japanese steak sauce?!?! **chef's kiss** Then lastly the fire tofu cheesecake. Love how dense and light it was. I know makes no sense but that's what it was. The hybrid of the 2 DELISH. I let them know I'm gluten free and they were so mindful and asked along the way. We are coming back Kokkaku! Wonderful first impression and sharing with all my friends and family to try. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Overall, very delicious and good service. They did not have a few options we wanted (shrimp and wagyu) as they had ran out, so just fyi if you go later in the day.

We would not order spicy again because we found it too vinegary. The best thing here is definitely the drinks. The yuzu sour and N/A nectar were both very good, and with the happy hour yakitori/sashimi deal very worth it if the sashimi wasn't so fishy :( We rated everything out of 16: Drinks were 14.25/16 Chicken Thigh Yakitori 12.75/16 Pork Belly 11/16 Shrimp Soy Butter 13.5/16 Bacon Rice Cake 11/16 Wagyu 12/16 Shiitake 11.2/16 Okonomiyaki 11.5/16 Sashimi 6/16

As for the service, the waitress at the check-in counter completely failed to acknowledge us when we walked in. We literally waited almost five minutes before she finally turned around and greeted us. There were only two tables being served at the time, and she had her back toward us the entire time. After she took our order, we were basically forgotten for the rest of the night. We had to wait around and figure things out ourselves, and when we left, nobody even acknowledged us. The food may still be good, but the service was really disappointing. The waitress at the check-in counter clearly needs more training on basic customer service and acknowledging guests. It's unfortunate because this used to be my favorite ramen place, but after this experience, I won't be rushing back.

While they could've been speaking to menu technicality of simply having it on the menu, in a well-spirited reply they said they had it for us. And so we... * Took a $35 Lyft to zoom over and respect their time, which certainly contributed to the frustration but very much isn't where most of it derived from. We made it a few minutes before the time we said we'd be there. * The only reason this isn't one star is because we ordered skewers that were pretty decent. I do recommend those. * Make sure to have phone charge for the virtual menus The host was amazing!!! Incredible spirits for late night. The servers were pretty garbage! I say servers plural because dude and his lookalike double-teamed us and somehow both sucked. I say this as someone who's worked in the service industry for 3 years. The servers seemed actively dismayed & angry that we were at the restaurant (there were 2 bigger tables that ended up remaining before we left the place, mind you), which simply could've been easily mitigated by telling us at 8:50PM to come a different day if we wanted better service or something of the sort. After traveling far & wide for this freakin Okonamiyaki, with an offputting slight glare, the waiter told us that they didn't have it for the night. No reason provided: "we just don't have it"... mmmk buddy. At least lie to us and say that the kitchen doesn't have any more ingredients or something dude. Upon the 3 of us ordering what we got, each item was disappointing in its own right: * To be fair, my friend who ordered the Uni Udon was warned that it might be a little weird tasting, and it sure was. Don't recommend * The JFC Don pictured was about 90% rice according to my friend. Nothing more needed to say there. * Annd my Maguro Avocado Don... wow I was astonished at how much I disliked it. The rice was lukewarm. Nothing was mentioned about minced tuna on the menu so it looked like dog food in my bowl. I'm white... so what in the white people shit was in my bowl? Like...genuinely. I could make that 10x better at my house in half the time and I'm a fcking college student. Is seasoning no longer with us? Does anyone know what pepper or garlic are? Was astonished at how one can make a dish so terrible. I only ate it because I'm broke and can't afford other stuff. The dish looks as horrible as it tasted , and I made it look better than it was served to me I could go on. And lastly, the checks. Yknow, for guys that seemed so pissed for us being there, they were slow as hell with the checks. I'm kind af but a bitch when I'm fucked with (case in point here), so I really gave them my whole dentures, which was exponential in magnitude compared to what they gave us. Thank you Issian, for a terrible night. Citizens of the world, please don't waste your money here, I beg you.

You choose what you want, place your order, and wait for it to be made. There are a couple of bar seats, but not much seating overall. The restaurant is actually inside a small convenience-style Asian market with snacks, drinks, and other groceries. Everything was really clean, and there was no strong fishy smell, which I appreciated. The staff was also really friendly. I tried the salmon and unagi. The salmon was pretty good, but I probably wouldn't get the unagi again. It wasn't bad, but it tasted like something you could easily pick up at an Asian grocery store, so nothing particularly special. Portions were pretty generous, and we only waited around 10 minutes for our food, which wasn't bad at all. Parking is generally pretty easy to find somewhere nearby on the street too. Overall, I'd say it's worth trying if you're in the area and want something quick and casual. The dispenser was wet, suggesting it had recently been used and run out. I flagged this to an employee who was handling food at the time. They acknowledged me but didn't address it. I waited and brought it up again and was met with visible annoyance. Another staff member eventually mentioned that employees use a sink in the kitchen. I asked if I could use it. Shortly after, soap appeared in the bathroom with no acknowledgment or apology. What concerns me most is this: if the customer-facing restroom had no soap during the dinner rush, and the response to being asked about it was irritation rather than urgency, what does that say about how handwashing is handled behind the scenes? I'm not looking for perfection. I'm looking for basic food safety protocol to be taken seriously. I didn't see that here.

A new favorite sushi spot emerges!…read more Sushi Taiyo is a rare gem that treasures the art of sushi without breaking the bank. Really impressed with the sushi here. The rolls have a great rice-to-fish ratio, and the fish itself tastes very high quality. You can tell they're actually paying attention to the balance of each piece instead of just loading everything up with rice and sauce. The nigiri was probably the highlight. Each piece had its own sauce, seasoning, or garnish that was clearly chosen for that specific fish, which reminded me of what you'd get at an omakase. It makes the nigiri feel much more thoughtful than the standard fish-on-rice you get at a lot of sushi places. It's also cute inside, definitely a good ambiance for a casual date at night. The restaurant is small enough that it's always easy to get service when you need it and the staff are friendly! Overall, this is a great middle ground between an expensive omakase and cheap everyday sushi. You get genuinely good fish and some of the care and attention to detail of a higher-end sushi restaurant without having to spend a ridiculous amount. They clearly respect the art of sushi here, and I'd definitely come back.
