You know that image you get in your head of "that place" you've always wanted to find, where the atmosphere is casual, the food is sublime, the cook comes out to talk and make sure things are just right, and the whole experience feels not only pleasant but personal? That hidden place that all your friends want to go back to, that feels like "yours" and feels like a beloved part of a community rather than just a service...
After a single visit with a friend who recommended it, I can easily proclaim that Mina's Cafe is, at least for me, "that place".
(In fact, since it's so small and hidden, I specifically signed up for Yelp to write this very review in order to help any way I can in keeping the place visited enough.)
I had a special that was called "Crazy Asian Stir Fry" (or something like that). The chicken was so amazingly tender I pulled a double-take, and the sauce had a strong, deep flavor with just the right amount of kick! (I feel this should be added to the regular menu.) My friend didn't bother with the menu, and went straight for what she'd been craving since before we arrived: The Pad Thai.
The food was simply wonderful.
Don't be fooled by seeing that half of the (admittedly small) menu isn't Thai food; the Thai dishes are top notch, and from what I hear the other eclectic offerings are really good too! (My friend informed me that the owner/cook only makes recipes that she personally likes to cook and eat herself!) The service was reasonably quick, and the servings were just the right size for just the right price.
The owner/cook is obviously very proud of her food, and very happy doing what she does. When she had time between orders she even came out from the kitchen to ask about our food! (She seemed touchingly overjoyed with how pleased we were with it.)
There was a group sitting in the corner who were obviously regulars, and she would also periodically pop out of the kitchen to sit down and chat with them when she could, talking about the sauces she wanted to sell and the recipes she was planning on making. Her attitude is contagious.
The place is incredibly small with only a few tables, and it's tucked away and too easy to miss. This, mixed with the simple sign and small multicultural menu, gives the false impression of being sketchy and/or bland. It is anything but.
I may go to the inconsistent "Thai Orchid" for good atmosphere, or visit "Thai Beer" for their reliably good selection, but after today "Mina's Cafe" will be my overall choice for fun, price, and flavor.
SUMMARY: The restaurant epitome of "don't judge a book by its cover", Mina's Cafe is that quaint favorite you've always searched for, complete with good food and a sociable cook. It deserves far more attention than it likely gets, so make sure to show the restaurant some love.
It will love you back.
UPDATE (as of 1/8/16): Corny lines aside, I have now been to the restaurant several times since I wrote this review and have always had a good experience and amazing food. The one thing I'd point out is that sometimes everybody receives chicken, regardless of what meat they ordered. It should be noted that IF you can manage to actually receive her tofu, it is a good contender for some of the best-cooked tofu I've ever had. I'd order tofu a lot more often at places if it was as good as hers.
Also, the "Crazy Asian Stir Fry" is now a regular menu item, which makes me very happy. read more
