Silk Thai is in the center of downtown Independence on Main Street, you really can't miss it. My extended family are regulars here and this is their favorite Thai restaurant in the surrounding area. It's located in half of what was the opera house, so the building is beautiful and historic with high ceilings. The space is also nicely decorated for the holidays. I went with a large group and I honestly loved every dish we ate. If you like fried food the volcano chicken with basil on top was amazing. The service was good and very very friendly, and the owner came over to our table to chat. Overall this was a really wonderful experience, I will look forward to dining here again when I'm in town. read more

Good Thai food. I was hoping for a bit more authentic thai but it was good food. We asked for Prik nam pla. We were told they don't have it - WHAT!? We were told to eat the chilis in oil (that's not the same). We received a huge appetizer combo platter and a salad. Waitress came back to our table 15 minutes later asking for our order which we had placed 30 minutes prior. We were basically full by the time our actual dinners arrived. We had a very disappointing dinner at Thai Silk this afternoon. As we entered at 5pm, the owner gestured from behind the counter at the rear of the restaurant to sit anywhere we chose. There were only 4 tables out of 20-25 tables that were occupied, so we chose one of the two tables at the front window area. Although there were few customers at the time, it took several minutes for the owner to approach us with menus, no offer of a pre-meal drink (turns out the liquor license is temporarily on hold for some bureaucratic reason), and she made no attempt to establish any rapport with us as customers to her establishment. Once again, we sat for several minutes before the owner arrived to take our food order with minimal contact with us. Our food orders arrived and were placed before us, no verbal contact, just a smile. We ate, the bill arrived, we paid, we left. No goodbye, thank you for coming. My wife and I enjoy connections with servers, usually ending up with some fun conversations or least acknowledgement of our patronage. We don't expect gratitude but we are paying customers and hoping for an enjoyable visit. read more

The people who work/run this restaurant are so incredibly nice--within five minutes you will feel comfortable and also want them to do well. The vegetables in all the food were incredibly fresh. Personally I'd be happy with spicier food, but what they do--and this is smart--is have an array of really good, homemade chili oils on the table so everyone can select their own heat level. My girlie pals and I went to Silk Thai recently. We live in Salem and hadn''t been to Independence in YEARS. Side note (They have really made the "downtown" main drag of Independence super trendy and cool. And, the park across the street right on the river is cool too). Yep, it had been a long time.......Anyway, Overall, the food was good from the appetizers to the main dishes. Portions of the main dishes, we thought, were enough that you could get 2+ meals out of each persons dish. I ordered extra peanut sauce and the portion was HUGE. Normally, an extra portion seems like it's about a Tablespoon, lol. The owner was very sweet too!! Just a couple things; certainly nothing that would deter us from going again. My friend's dish, while I appreciate a nice portion of peanut sauce, was swimming in peanut sauce and it was a little much-even for me, the sauce aficionado. Maybe they assumed we all wanted extra peanut sauce? My other pal ordered an "iced tea" and was given a Thai Iced Tea? We thought maybe that is their iced tea? Rude Service, Missing Items, and Poor To-Go Packaging Last night, I went with my sister and brother-in-law to one of the Riverside Park concerts. We're not from Independence, but when we stopped by this restaurant to get food to go, I was initially impressed -- it looked beautiful and very clean. There weren't many people inside when we arrived. We went ahead and ordered our food to go. My sister and her family got the peanut chicken (I can't remember the full name), two Thai teas, extra rice, sticky mango rice, and pot stickers. She originally said egg rolls, but I corrected her mid-order and clarified that she wanted pot stickers instead. The employee acknowledged this and removed the egg rolls. Shortly after, the employee came back with only one Thai tea. My sister calmly said they had ordered two, but the employee argued, insisting only one was ordered. Rather than escalate, my sister just paid for the second tea again. When their order came out, the mango sticky rice was missing. They reminded the employee, and she replied, "Oh, you wanted mango sticky rice?" I hadn't received my food yet, so I told them to go ahead to the concert while I waited for the missing item. When I reminded the employee again about the mango sticky rice, she argued, saying they never ordered it. I was standing right there when they clearly did. Then my brother-in-law came back to retrieve something he forgot and politely asked if he could just re-order the mango sticky rice with sauce on the side. The employee told him no--he'd have to spend $10 again. So they had to repurchase food they already paid for, and it came in a Ziploc bag--which is completely unacceptable for hot food. When I finally got my order and joined them at the concert, we realized the pot stickers were missing too. So to sum it up: rude customer service, arguing with paying customers, missing items, and questionable food packaging. The food was just okay, definitely not worth the hassle. I've been to this restaurant tons of times and it's some of the best Thai food I've had. The Thai iced tea is always delicious and I've ordered numerous different meals and they've all been amazing. The one time my food was burnt, I told them and they comped my entree and had the meal remade. They're incredibly kind and I will continue to go there when I'm craving Thai food. This place recently opened in Independence and I was curious to try it. I decided to try take out. The online menu was easy to use and I appreciated the descriptions of each item. However, the system did not accept the billing address for my credit card. Still determined to try this place, I decided to drive over and order at the restaurant. The location is in a beautiful old building with lots of big windows and a high ceiling. I really like the exterior paint color combination. Upon entering, I noticed that the few tables were spaced far apart, and the main desk was located at the back, in front of the doors to the kitchen. The person at the desk quickly informed me that I should expect an hour wait for my order. Since I live nearby, I decided to order anyway. I liked that they told me about the wait time first thing. I would definitely keep that in mind for the timing of future visits. It makes sense that they were swamped on a Saturday night, and I think lots of people were curious to check a new place out. i also think they are probably working out the kinks since I don't think they have been open very long. I ordered the Thai Orange Chicken with Jasmine rice, and the Evil Prince Curry with tofu, which was a red curry. The orange chicken was ordered mild spiciness, the red curry medium. I also ordered a mango with sticky rice for dessert. I went home and when I returned to the restaurant, things seemed a bit chaotic. People were showing up and leaving when hearing the wait for a table was well over an hour. I think the necessity of having less tables was really impacting the wait time, as well as a high number of take out orders like mine! I only waited about ten minutes and my food was ready. The bag was piping hot! The Thai Orange Chicken consisted of fried pieces of chicken in a orange sauce with vegetables and pieces of orange. The chicken was cooked nicely and was tasty and had a nice texture. The vegetables were perfectly cooked to exactly crisp-tender. The sauce was subtle, but had nice orange notes. The Evil Prince red curry was delicious. They didn't include the tofu, but it still had a lot of veggies. Quite spicy (for me), it was creamy and had a complex, rich flavor along with the heat. Again, the veggies were cooked perfectly! Both sauces were thin, which leads me to my one suggestion. I would have liked to have a larger amount of rice with both dishes, as I think it would have been good to catch as much of the sauces as possible! The mango with sticky rice was another hit! The mango was ripe and had a wonderful flavor, and the sticky rice was as creamy and sweet as it should be with a lovely texture. I will definitely come back and try more of Silk Thai's offerings, like some of the appetizer rolls and salads, many of which sounded good. It might be a good idea to visit this place during the week as it finds its feet, but it already makes a great addition to the burgeoning downtown of Independence. read more

Even the rave reviews of friends who insisted we try Silk Thai didn't come close to describing the brilliance of our first meal there today. We travel through Bangkok en route to Bhutan every year, and, to our amazement, Silk Thai's cuisine is even better than what we've enjoyed in the best hotel restaurants there. The pumpkin curry was perfection itself, as were the tofu salad rolls and their astonishingly good peanut sauce (!!!) The Tom Kha traditional Thai coconut soup was BETTER than Bangkok's best! And the restaurant's atmosphere is ultra-clean and elegant, telling us that the owner attends to every detail and gets it all right. We decided on the spot to serve Silk Thai's appetizers at an upcoming garden party at our home. It's simply the best. Period. We can scarcely believe our good fortune that a Thai restaurant of this caliber exists only minutes from our home in Salem. Deserves a hundred stars. read more

Tried this tonight and I'm so impressed . Amazing food and great service. I eat gluten free for celiac and am so careful all the time ... I was told they could make anything for me that I wanted from the menu. What freedom!! The food was incredible. The cook was extra careful and double checked a seasoning with me that she was concerned about (it was gluten free) but she wanted to be sure. Top marks for safety!!! read more

This is the best Thai place around the Polk County area. I've tried other places in the area and they are either hard to get a hold of (won't answer the phone) or they will not use DoorDash (which I do understand there are fees). I've picked up at this place or had DoorDash deliver and it has been great each time. The order was correct and very tasty. I always try to get extra so I have it for a few days worth. The curry is good but their stir fry is also good. I enjoy the appetizer sampler as it gives you a bit of everything you want to try and not too much of one thing. All in all, I will be working my way through the menu trying various items. It's definitely worth the stop in. I can't speak to the dining area. It looks nice. All indoor no outside tables. It's all take out for me thus far. I will be back to try more items soon. read more

Stopped in for lunch and had a lovely experience. It was about 2pm on a Thursday so the restaurant was quiet, with about 1/3 of the tables full. It seemed to be seat yourself but a waitress came to the door to greet me, menus and water were quickly brought to the table and service continued to be quick (but not rushed) the entire time. I had the lunch sized yellow curry with crispy duck for just under $15. The curry was lovely, I did think the veggies were cut a bit big but that's just my preference. The duck was delicious and perfectly crispy. The portion size was great for the price, I ended up with some leftovers. Overall a great experience, I'm excited to return and try more of the menu! read more

This place is hands down a 5 star! The Volcano Chicken is hands down one of the best Chicken Entrees I've ever had. It's like an Orange Chicken on Steroids. The spice level is perfect if you can't handle a lot of spice but want amazing flavor! The customer service is amazing, and the restaurant is very clean and family friendly. Also a great spot for a date, it's a very cute location. Price is great for how big the servings are and how fresh the food is. The Chicken Satay is good with serviceable peanut sauce and I hear that the shrimp pad Thai is good from my lover.

Though the meal was freshly prepared and tasty. The takeout order was small for the cost of it. I probably won't go back.

Service was exceptional. It was busy with other patrons and several take-out orders, and the waitress had the ability to multiple task to make sure everyone was taken care of a at reasonable time. Food was okay, not the best. The pad Thai was a bit dry, and it lacked favor. The fried calamari had good breading and the portion was generous. The pineapple fried rice was decent. Super cute place and good food but don't even bother trying to get take out from here they take forever and do not prioritize takeout orders. If they are busy they will forget about you and not have it ready any time near when they say they will. WOW! The food here is very flavorful. Even a simple dish like the house fried rice is perfectly seasoned with very well balanced flavors that hits the all the umami notes! We ordered a chicken chow mein, beef fried rice, chicken basil, and Tom Yum soup, potstickers, and salad roll with shrimp. All the dishes were delicious. The warm peanut sauce that came with the salad roll was so good, I wanted to eat an entire bowl of the sauce alone. Very delicious Thai food on a Main Street. Good expectations were dashed when trying the Penang Curry and Rama Avocados Prawns dishes. Both dishes lacked flavor. The PC was in a large bowl of watered down soup with overcooked chicken. It was ordered with number 3 (of 5) spice. The flavor was very dissatisfying and the heat was possibly a number one. The RAP arrived with possibly the least flavorful peanut sauce I've experienced. Again lacking flavor it was definitely disappointing. Our Thai ice tea was actually good. No positive recommendations from tonight's dinner! read more

The food was okay, nothing to talk about but what I do want to talk about is the service. She never offered me water or asked how the food was. I went up and paid for my food and left. I was outside and I heard this lady telling me I had to pay tip, it wasn't included! I stood there for a second and s thought about what I was hearing and she repeated it. I told her Um I paid for the food and tip for what??? You didn't even offer me water!" I told her a tip is optional and if it was good service I would've tipped but you giving me food I ordered doesn't get you a tip! Water would've helped. I asked her to stick around so I could record her and she simultaneously walked away, saying I didn't say anything. She did tell me never to come back, I didn't plan to! The pad Thai Noodles with added shrimp was well seasoned and very tasty. My husband has a spicy seafood salad with calamari, scallops and shrimp on it. The sauces were all good too. Service was a little slow but we will go back for sure. read more
