I asked the person taking my order, if there were mushrooms in the Vegan Drunken Noodle and they told me no, but when I started eating my food, there were mushrooms in it. Our family favorite! We've been coming to Royal Thai Kitchen for the past 3 years. Lee knows my husband likes everything super spicy and he enjoys the Green Curry with chicken. Lee makes each carrot flower herself and even has a video on Facebook. I love the freshness of the food, especially the Fresh Ginger Stir Fry with tofu, it's loaded with flavor. Royal Thai does it right. They're located in South Salem, tucked away in a little plaza where I just found out is located by a drive-through raw juice/smoothie bar too. Plenty of parking, and they have a small and kind of dark indoor seating area. No seats outdoors, so leave the dogs at home. I picked up an order, and they were quick and even sent me a text to let me know my order was ready. Their papaya salad is delicious, fresh, and filled with generous and juicy shrimp. I love that they devined the shrimp meticulously, and the peanuts were crunchy and well-portioned. Their pad see ew was delicious, and I loved the tofu choice as it came with some veggies. Not too sweet on the flavor, and mild was honestly very mild. I would like to try medium next time. I didn't have to fan my mouth from the spice, and thai spice is no joke. They even gave me a little wrapped portion of purple sticky rice, so I can only imagine that their mango sticky rice is bomb as well. I am really disappointed in this restaurant! I placed an order for food today close to $100 and when I went inside to pick up my order, I asked for a simple side of peanut sauce and was told that my food that I ordered doesn't come with peanut sauce and that they would have to charge me, even more money! It is a simple condiment and I have no idea why they would tell me that unless I paid I could not get the peanut sauce when the Thai restaurant right down the road next to the dollar tree (Lanxang Lao Thai Cuisine) has never told me I could not have a side of peanut sauce nor do they charge you! The people of Salem are keeping your business alive and open by purchasing food through you, the least you can do is take care of the people and stop trying to pinch pennies and take, take, take from all of us, and treat us with respect and kindness, knowing that we choose to eat at your establishment and that we do not have to choose to eat there! A small portion of the pad thai noodles. Tom kha soup with mild spice had a good flavor. Pad Thai noodles with fresh bean sprouts are pretty consistent with the good Thai restaurants we've been to. Green curry has a watery sauce. good taste, but not exactly the curry green sauce taste we are used to. Some Thai restaurants have a thicker sauce for their curries. Unique to this establishment is that their curries do not have eggplant in them. The green curry did have green squash, green beans, tomatoes, broccoli, basil, baby corn, and carrots. All vegetables were fresh.. As the photos show, the presentation is lovely. Splitting the meal with my wife, the 3 items were very filling. The bathroom (single stall) is clean and the coolest (temperature-wise) place in the restaurant. I enjoyed seeing a diverse group of cultures in the restaurant today. This establishment is a good runner-up to our favorite in Salem... but everyone's taste is slightly different. read more

I've ordered from this thai food restaurant twice in the past month, the same thing Tim gai soup and an app. very disappointing this last time. since when is cabbage a part of Tom gai soup? very skimpy on the onions and mushrooms and the chicken was tough, like freezer burn tough. so was the chicken satay. soup and the app. we're over $30. Good: clean, great service, food arrived quickly and was plated beautifully. Bad: pad kee mao was a bowl of noodles. One piece of basil, a couple pieces of vegetables and chicken. I asked for Thai hot and no spice at all. Everyone in my group enjoyed their food and every plate I saw in the restaurant looked good. I'd go back and try something else. My mom liked her pad thai, (although I did not), so this may have just been a bad order, but everything I got was a huge letdown. I chose the extra vegetables option as the protein for the tom kha, assuming that meant more of the vegetables that normally belong in the soup. Instead, they added bell peppers and zucchini, just put what vegetables they are on the app please, so people know what they are getting. Not to mention they used the cheap white button mushrooms you put on dominos pizza instead of the traditional straw mushrooms or ouster mushrooms. The tomato chunks were super oversized and lazily cut, and the green onions were super rigid, crunchy, and basically raw. The pad see ew was oily, mushy, bland, had no egg, and had none of the wok sear or strong soy sauce flavor that makes the dish good. Even the peanut sauce was strangely sweet with an unfamiliar aftertaste. I have eaten at hundreds of Thai restaurants, and I honestly could not get through more than a couple bites of this meal. read more

Hands down the best Thai food in South Salem (there are 5 Thai restaurants plus the Blue Thai truck in South Salem--I recommend all but one). And easily the best Thai in South Salem, West Salem, or Keizer. Have only tried one place on Lancaster, so I can't claim it's the best in Salem. The chef/owner makes all of her own sauces and Thai curries from scratch and they are all amazing compared to all the commercial premade sauces and curry pastes used by almost everyone else. Her homemade Pad Thai sauce blew my wife and I away, and she doesn't skimp on it like other places. You could taste the freshly soaked tamarind and lots of other awesome flavors. Her homemade Thai yellow curry in the Golden Chicken curry (totally different than Indian yellow curry) was floral and very tasty--unlike any other Thai yellow curry I've had elsewhere. Highly recommend the Golden Chicken curry, the Shrimp Ceramic Pot with what appeared to be tasty mung beans noodles, and of course the Pad Thai. The Thai basil chicken was good another time, but wasn't significantly better than other places. My wife ordered a side of peanut sauce (because most places skimp on their pad thai sauce they probably buy at an Asian grocery store) but there was too much going on in it for us--plus when the Pad Thai arrived, it needed nothing added to it, was perfect as it was. But I bet that homemade peanut sauce would be awesome if cooked into something else, which is probably what it's for. The salt and pepper fried calamari was also great--and cut differently than any other Thai or Chinese restaurant in Salem. I ordered my dishes "spicy" and they really weren't hot at all--catered to an American palette--I drizzled some of her hot chile oil on, and was great. We also love dining in here as opposed to takeout. The seating is spacious, spread out enough, and the atmosphere is quiet with some low volume music. The decor is obviously Thai, but in no way overdone or gaudy. Very relaxing atmosphere. Plenty of people came in both times I've gone to pick up take-out orders, so I'm sure it's good. The location is on the east side of South Commercial up in that elevated strip mall before you get to Kuebler across from MAPS Credit Union. We are definitely going back there a 3rd time--and hopefully I'll order something new instead of reordering what I already know is amazing--which will probably be hard for me, because I'm already craving what I've already had. Service was also very friendly and attentive. The owner/chef made several trips around the dining room to make sure everyone's meals were fine. This restaurant was new to us. It turned out to be a very pleasant surprise in all respects. Super attentive and friendly waitress. We tried the yellow curry with sweet potato and veggie lovers stir fry, both with chicken. I know it sounds like hyperbole, but it was definitely the best Thai food I'd ever had, by far. I ordered the yellow curry medium spicy and it was perfect for me--- I like spicy, but I don't think I'd want it any hotter. They had a large order on the drink menu, including mixed drinks. We didn't try any. They also had many vegan and vegetarian options. It's a modest little Thai restaurant, with inexpensive but tasteful decor. Soft, quiet minimalist ambient music playing in the background. And the final surprise? It was really inexpensive. Two full meals with a pot of tea was less than $30! read more

I've been told by some Thai restaurants here that people in Salem expect Thai food to be like Chinese, and so they've changed their recipes to add more vegetables.
