My fiancé and I were looking for a bakery to make our wedding cake. We approached Sewell Sweets with excitement -- submitted an inquiry, made follow-up calls, sent emails, and confirmed directly with the owner before visiting. What followed was pure frustration. When we arrived, the employee had no idea about the cake box listed on the website and offered to call the owner when we raised the pricing discrepancy. While helping us, she was also audibly complaining about another customer, saying she "couldn't even wait 45 seconds." We ended up paying more than the advertised price and were only told after the fact that in-store pricing differs. All four cakes went in the trash. They were dry, stale, and one tasted so off that we couldn't take more than one bite. $48 for product that was completely inedible. When we called to report it, the employee showed no empathy, made no apology, and had a noticeable attitude. When the owner called back, I was calm and polite. I was hoping for basic acknowledgment, given we had planned to spend significantly more on a wedding cake there. Instead, he led with camera footage, misrepresented what I had said, declined my offer to return the cakes, and ended the call with nothing but silence and "I'll take it into consideration." Maybe it was an off day. These things happen, even at great businesses. But a great business apologizes, asks questions, and tries to make it right. None of that happened here. What makes this experience stand out isn't just one bad interaction -- it's the pattern. Unanswered emails. Misinformed staff. Inedible products. Dismissive phone calls. And then a same-day public response crafted to discredit rather than reflect. Do yourself a favor and find a bakery that actually values your business, your event, and basic human decency. Sewell Sweets is not it. --------------- UPDATE: The owner has replied to this review on Google, and while I have no interest in a public argument, several claims in that response are inaccurate and anyone reading deserves the full picture. We were not attempting a random walk-in tasting. An inquiry was submitted early-to-mid March, a follow-up call was made on March 18th, a follow-up email sent the same day, and we spoke to the owner on March 19th -- during which he confirmed he had seen our emails, that our date was available, and that he would be in touch. I told him we would be coming in the next day, exactly as his employee had instructed. We followed every step we were given. The owner did not apologize multiple times. He opened by citing camera footage -- for a quality complaint -- then told me I had claimed a cake was dropped on the floor, which I never said. I described the taste as "off" like he said, which is not an insult by any reasonable standard. There was a lot of silence and he just said "I'll take it into consideration." Twice. That was it. At no point during any of our interactions did we raise our voices, argue, or say anything disrespectful. We were nothing but polite. Also worth noting -- just because someone else didn't complain, doesn't mean our experience didn't happen. For someone who described an extremely busy service day, not a single positive review appears to have been posted that day, which goes to show not everyone shares their experience. In fact, this is only the 2nd negative review I have posted in my entire life and the only one that is food related. The owner claims he looked "carefully" into our experience -- yet by his own account, in just 25 minutes he managed to receive word from his employee about my call, conduct an internal review of the situation, review emails, confirm proper handling and quality of preparation, speak with three separate staff members about our interactions, and check camera footage -- and still had time to call me back. That is quite a thorough investigation for 25 minutes. Finally, it says a lot that a lengthy response was written the same day to dispute a customer's experience, yet an email sent over a week prior was never acknowledged and a call from days before went unreturned. ------ read more

Sewell Sweets is a small spot on Liberty with seats for 4 and multiple, changed daily, small bites to regular size cookies, brownies, and cake parfaits. Come in ready to experiment. They don't have regular offerings but change flavors daily. They honor a sign up sheet to notify you when your favorite will be available for a day. Everything we sampled was flavor dense and filling after a few bites. Spoons are 1/2 teaspoon size and that might be too big. I'm still rather disappointed their autumn cookie is only available in pumpkin spice season because it is the best cookie I've had. We had never been here before but decided to come here for a birthday treat after seeing so many good reviews and goodness they were true. My husband and I got their baby cakes (his was tiramisu and mine was raspberry lemon) and we got a unicorn cookie for our kiddo. The cakes were delightful, perfectly sized and delicious. The unicorn cookie tasted like the ones my mom used to make, so good! We especially liked that the icing was not too sweet, just a really delicate and pleasant sweetness. The ambiance was nice and clean, with pretty music playing and beautiful treats on display, and the service was great! Both of the people behind the counter were super friendly and helped us pick out just the right treats. If you're looking for a truly unique dessert with great flavor, this is the right place. I came here on a whim whilst taking a walk through downtown Salem. My fiancee spotted it while we snacked at Bo & Vine and wanted to check it out for our upcoming wedding. As we walked by, the bearded gentleman at the counter gave an unexpected but friendly wave, so we just had to walk in. He provided us a sample of their brownie. It was light, decadent, and slightly crisp with a deep chocolate flavor that was accentuated by a little sea salt. 10/10. We then got to asking this man and his wife, the owners of the business, about wedding dessert options. They were incredibly patient and kind. Their cakes look amazing. All of the flowers on the cakes are sugar sculpted, apparently, which is even more astounding. They also said all of the smaller bites can be used to make a dessert bar. So we got to perusing the little displays. The mini cakes were $10, enough for at least 2 people to share. Because we'd yet to eat dinner, my eyes landed on the little dessert cups, which were $3.50. My fiancee and I shared the strawberry lemon one. It was sweet and lightly tangy. The jam was incredible, the cake was sweet, and the little bit of icing provided a touch of richness. I had a "Walk in the Woods", a blackberry/rose latte that had front notes of blackberry and a delightful finish of rose. The coffees were better than many we've had in Salem, and that wasn't even the best part. The real highlight is their baked treats! We ordered a chocolate mint brownie that had everything one hopes for in such a goodie as well as three tartlets- salted chocolate caramel, mixed fruit & raspberry matcha. My husband picked up an assortments of sweet treats from Sewell Sweets on Valentine's Day and they were absolutely delicious - One of the owners had said they were voted best cakes in Oregon - and now I know why! Their cake was not only beautiful presentation wise, but incredibly moist and bursting with flavor (Merlot chocolate cake ‍). Their mini cheesecake was very light and creamy. The berry tart had layers of surprises and very well balanced; even my husband who doesn't like tarts was going back for seconds. This bakery has some of the best cake I've ever had. The peach cake was unbelievably delicious. It tasted like fresh peaches and magic. I'm by no means a professional, but I'm a pretty solid amateur baker and I make a ton of cakes. The cake I had today was so good I'll drive from Eugene to Salem to eat it again! My toddler son also picked out a unicorn sparkle cookie and I stole a bite of it. It was also 10/10. I have been wanting to get this review done since the week before Christmas but alas the holidays held me up a bit. I wanted to make sure I spent some real time talking about this new bakery. It is so good I have to give it some proper attention. The bakes are made in house and that may sound like not a big deal but when you see the beautiful decorations and the arrangements one can see that this is a labour of love and the proof is in the taste. They have a wonderful attitude which fills the place with a happy calm. They have seating so one can enjoy their bake right away. They have a wonderfully rich brownie and I had one of the best double chocolate chip cookies I have ever had. EVER. I love the attention given to details, the double chocolate chip cookie had a sprinkle of sea salt on it which, of course, brought the taste up a level. Sea Salt is usually on a chocolate chip cookie but having it on a double chocolate chip cookie was what had been missing in my life. For the holiday season they had ready baked and packaged blank gingerbread men on a bed of mini marshmellows on a charger dish. It came with 4 different coloured icing so one could decorate their own gingerbread man. The whole plate was festively wrapped and would have made a lovely fun gift and it in fact did make a great gift as my husband bought it for me. I will add a photo of it when I get a chance to. The most important part was that I froze it because I wanted it for Christmas. They said it could keep and I defrosted it the following week. I had no problem decorating and eating the whole thing! I will absolutely purchase another one of these kinds of fun decorative bakes. Like if they make Valentines ones or Easter, any holiday. The best part was that the icing and the cookie stayed fresh and was so yummy, perfect gingerbread!!!Oh! and I cant forget to mention they have drinks! and in house made syrups too. I had a gingerbread latte and it was so good. One can clearly taste the difference, as this was hand made liquid gold in my espresso!
