Friendly guy, only does smog check. Went yesterday and there was road construction closure so it looks like you can't get into the street but you have to turn and ask the vested road workers to open the cones to drive by. So far I heard the workers will be on the street for 13 more days I hope customers still come into this business even through road work. This is my 2nd time going to this business because the price includes certificate and is competitive. Quick & easy Smog check. Trust me, you won't regret when you come to Milpitas Smog Test Only. He is also STAR certified. He takes about 15-20 mins per car and sends the certification straight to the DMV. Keep in mind, he doesn't do older cars so I would call to make sure but anytime in the 2000s should be good. Make sure your check engine light isn't on when coming because he'll have to check that out before giving you the passing certificate. If it does fail, he'll offer for another inspection for a lower price or free of charge if you fix the issue within the timeframe he suggests (2 weeks or so). Great guy! read more

Needed a smog done so I yelped what was around. Decided to check out Milpitas Smog Test Only. He looks to be working alone in one bay. How it works is you go inside and put your license plate on a wait list and go wait in your car. When it's your turn he'll stop by your window and ask you to pull your car into the bay. He'll go down 1 by 1 and perform the smog check. There were 3 cars in front of me and it takes about 15min per car. So if you're pressed on time and need to figure out the timing, just give 15-20min per car. When he's working on your car you can fill out the paperwork. Quick work and was on my way. read more

I called Milpitas Smog to ask questions since I haven't been to this particular place for a smog check. The phone was answered promptly, and I thought that the employee was courteous and communicated well over the phone. Knowing that smog check stations are first come first serve, I specifically asked if there was a queue and how long the wait was. He told me over the phone that there was no one there at the time and assured that the smog check took 10 min. It looked like there was only one employee running the show, but he was fast and efficient. I dropped in around 11:45am and saw that there were two other customers ahead of me. The employee had just started working on one of the two cars when I arrived. The second customer in line couldn't wait and ended up leaving, so that boosted me up a spot. Between the first customer's and my car's smog check, I was out of that place in less than 30 minutes. I called on a Sunday afternoon and was able to quickly get the car checked out. Covid protocol - only one chair in the shop, masks all times. There was a form to fill out but other than that, interactions were limited. The cost was about $40 after $20 discount (applied automatically for me, but other Yelp reviewers say you have to mention the discount on their website). Tried to call to book appointment but no one picked up. Based on reviews I though walk-in shouldn't be bad. One tip: ensure you know the right address as the building is full of auto repair / consultant / sales etc businesses. See the pictures on Yelp to double check. Place is open and clean. Few chairs to seat. Thao is not a chatter. So don't expect an over energetic exhaustive small talk. He takes your keys, the papers why you are there, pulled the car in and started working on it. I was concerned if he finishes to job and gives me unrealistic bill but it was my naivity. Thao was gathering all info to make up the estimate which he gets your sign before starting to work. True professional. Got the inspection done in less than 10 mins. Gave the certificate and sent it to DMV electronically. Accept credit card but I paid cash just to save the guy few cents. Thao is a solid shop owner. He's got a little place at the corner of the building, so be sure to enter the right side. He's got a great coupon discount, so be sure to mention that as well. He treated my car with a lot of respect, even complementing it. I could tell he was very careful opening and closing the door, so it doesn't hit anything. I drive past several other smog places to get to his, because I know he does quality work. He's also 100% A-star Cali smog certified. Came to this place around 11:30AM on a Friday and I was done in 10 minutes! Quick and super easy! I had originally went to another place and the person told me specifically the smog check machine has issues reading my car's computer, therefore he was unable to perform the test. He recommended me to go to the dealership to figure out the issue. Brought in my car at the dealership and they said nothing was wrong with my car. Done and out. Easy peezy. Thao was pretty much sitting there at his desk when I walked in. I showed up probably around 1:30pm in the afternoon hoping there wasn't much of a wait.. Well, there certainly was not! Told him I needed a smog check and he just asked for my keys. He pulled my car in, handed me the invoice to authorize the work, and started hooking things up. Because of a bluetooth OBDII adapter I installed, I tucked away the connector. He started wonder where it was and called me over. WHOOPS! No big deal, I took off a panel and got the connector for him to attach his scanner. While I thought it might have been a pretty slow day for him, just as he started working on my car, two more people showed up. This is typical, around $55 or $60 for pre-2000 vehicles. The owner complained that the price is high because of the type of machine he needed to do pre-2000 year vehicle readings. Why is that my problem? Well, I guess it is because I end up paying the higher price. If charging a premium, I could get it done at a local smog station/gas station that is blocks from my home instead of driving further to this place. I found a place called South Bay Smog off Montague, near Great Mall Pkwy/Main St., in San Jose that is less expensive and a relative of my mechanic at Abbott Auto Service off Main St. in Milpitas.
