Bad Experience BEWARE "UNFRIENDLY SMOG Fail TEST ONLY!!! 1. Failed SMOG test because technician entered incorrect engine size entered. This caused test to fail ! ! 2. Told me they would charge me for a Retest if 2nd test failed CO emissions! 3. Damaged hood latch and bent support rod. This was done by technician slamming hood onto incorrectly positioned Hood support rod ! ! 1. The SMOG technician tested my vehicle is a short amount of time which was appreciated However, the Smog test failed? I have had no SMOG test failures in the 13 years I have owned the car. The car is maintained and in good operating condition. The Smog technician tells me the car probably failed CO emissions test because of worn spark plugs, or worn Oxygen sensor. He told me that they would do a retest once the car had been repaired. 2. Later that morning I looked at the paperwork to review the test results when I had time. The report had different engine size listed that what my car actually had? I went back to Friendly Smog and told them about this error. Immediately the Smog Technician tells me the engine size did NOT matter, and it would fail a RETEST. I demanded a RETEST with the proper sized engine. The manager hears this discussion and repeats what the Smog Technician saying the engine size did not matter, and my older car would fail SMOG again. I told them they were wrong, since my car has never failed SMOG tests in the past. They tell me, we could not find the engine size on the emission label? So they used the 'default' engine listed for that model car. This was lazy, and a stupid mistake. They have to enter the VIN when doing the test, per DMV requirements. If the VIN number is looked up, the correct engine is listed for that specific car. This step was not done, which created the problem #1 listed above! Finally, they said a re-test would be done, and I would have to pay, another $65 if it failed CO emissions again. The car easily passed the 2nd SMOG test, but for some 'unknown reason' the Check Engine light came on while performing 2nd test. At that point I decided to cut my losses and NEVER do business with 'UN-Friendly Smog' Again. 3. Later when driving the car, the hood popped open. I pulled over and notice the hood support rod was not clipped into plastic holder. The rod was bent and in the wrong place! The hood was forced closed onto the support rod, bending the frame which holds the hood latch. The hood popped open when hitting a bump. The car now was dangerous to drive! I was able to re-bend the frame to realign the hood latch so the hood would remain closed. UNFRIENDLY SMOG was a WASTE OF MY TIME AND MONEY!!!! read more

I have a '94 Buick and I called Milpitas Smog Test Only--they say they require appointments for vehicles 1999 or earlier--and they refused to do my car. So I called Friendly, and--true to their name--they said bring it right over. They started work immediately and I walked a block down the street where there are a couple restaurants and had lunch. I've been going here for quite some time now. This year, service has gone to shit. The first time it failed, it took the guy 1.5hrs to smog my car... I see him walking to the back of the room and all I can here is Spanish conversation. Pretty disappointing when it's on my time and rude. The second time, I see him walking around taking his sweet time chit chatting with other coworkers... chatting with his lady friend that is visiting... it took him 30 mins just to get my car onto the platform to check. The last few times I went here, it was ~$45. Now it's ~$60. Just an FYI for you guys. Regardless of pricing-- The timeframe of completing my smog test is ridiculous. I can understand if it's busy, and it's obviously not. This will be the last time I'm coming here and it's sad because it's such a convenient location for me. read more

I took my car here because I live like 2 minutes away. I was told the smog check would cost 59.99. I was like sounds on par with other smog check places... Test went fine, car passed, went to pay, I was charged $70.... I was like huh? He didn't factor in the States SMOG certificate fee (8.25) and he stuck in a 2 pretest fee? I didn't ask for a pretest! I was upset at the fact that this guy quoted me a price that's the same for other testers in the area, then added his stuff on top. This is dishonest to me. So my other car needed a SMOG, so I went 2 blocks up the street to Quick SMOG Check Center. The test there was 55 plus 8.25 (certificate fee) and a 1.75 Xfer fee. But the best thing was the guy that works there told me the price out the door. He said $65. Got to love honesty and upfont-ness. I strongly recommend you drive 2 blocks up the street and save $5... =) read more

I put getting my cars smogged in the same California state government lack of forethought category as putting MTBE in gasoline to pollute the groundwater in order to supposedly prevent smog. How much time, effort and needless cost is spent testing newer vehicles that probably collectively pass 98% of the time? With 5 cars in the family I always groan when I get the registration notice saying I need a smog. However these guys made it easy. I drove up after 2pm on a Monday without an appointment, signed the estimate and was out in about 30 minutes at the very most. I don't understand the hocus pocus with the smog tests but am always happy to pass. I will come by with the other 4 vehicles sometime soon I am sure. read more

Although not too conveniently located on a main road, this little shop is still easy to find tucked away across the railroad tracks off of Lafayette since there are smog test signs on Lafayette. The prices are fair since they advertise specials on Craigslist ($34.95 at the time of the writing) and also do price matching and take competitors coupons if you bring in a print out or advertisement. The local shop owner, Jimmy, is both knowledgeable and friendly. Over the past two years, he has been more than willing to share his knowledge of how to get a vehicle to pollute less, increase gas mileage, and most anything else having to do with air-exhaust tuning. The best part is that he works quickly and doesn't mind staying a bit past the shop's closing time to ensure that you can get your smog test. Jimmy was fast! I was in and out faster than getting a burger at Mickey Ds! I found the ad for their shop on craigslist and then checked Yelp(of course). My car is *not* stock so I'm a little weary where I take it for smog, fearing they will fail me for visual after they see my exhaust and carbon fiber airbox, even though my car will pass sniffer no problem. Great smog test place! Tony is very friendly and will re-test your car for free as many times as it takes to get the pass (and I should know). Also, I think they're linked with their neighbor J-Speed, because one of my re-tests was done over there on their machine and it counted as a free re-test. I had had the ignition cylinder replaced on my car a while ago, and apparently the battery was disconnected during that change. My car's on-board computer uses volatile memory (I had no idea, for some reason I thought it was non-volatile), and some statistical metric that it collects is reported back over the electronic system and used in the smog test. Let me tell you, my aging car is teaching me all kinds of things about cars and smog tests that I did not know before :/ Not sure if grateful or annoyed at my car, really. Tony was able to tell me that the emissions part was passing just fine, but the computer wasn't reporting back the metrics needed. After driving around a bunch, it still wasn't working, so he suggested I take it to my mechanic. My mechanic figured out that the thermostat wasn't registering anything, and the computer uses the engine temperature to determine that it's warmed up enough to start taking measurements. Unsurprisingly, if it's reporting a stone cold engine the whole time, it won't record squat. We sort of found that out when my car popped the engine coolant cap off and sent boiling coolant everywhere in my mechanic's shop, but that's a story for another time... (Four B Auto's David is amazing and very patient with exploding cars.) Thermostat was replaced, I drove around, and still no dice. Tony notes that the temperature is being reported now, but never goes above 125, and it needs to be at least 165. Hmn. Back to the mechanic with this new information, and he figures out that there's a short in the wiring harness and fixes that. Finally, the car is reporting appropriate temperatures! After a short drive around town, I'm back at Friendly Smog Test and my car has finally passed! Hooray! And to think, it was my car's ability to sense the engine temperature that was holding all that up. Moral of the story: if you think it's not related to the smog test, ask. Sometimes it is, and Tony will take the time to explain it to you. Thanks, Tony! :) read more

I went in for a smog check and he made this experience super easy. He also made sure I was comfortable waiting for my car and also made small talk about eachothers kids. Recently moved from Nevada and had to smog my truck to be registered in California. My first attempt failed, apparently my K&N intake system was missing a sticker that California requires. Tony was my tester and he was pretty friendly and helpful. I applied for a replacement with K&N and a week later they sent me my sticker. I brought my truck back to Tony and he remembered me. He tested my truck a second time...it passed...and I was on my way in about 45 minutes. Would have been faster but I had to wait for 2 other cars before me. Based on a neighbor's recommendation on Friendly SMOG Test Only, I called ($45 was quoted) then went into them to smog my son's older Audi A4 which my son and I just put a new motor and turbo in. They did the smog check and it passed the emissions part but since I had reconnected the battery the previous day it had not had a chance to log/update the ECU. The test gave "This vehicle failed the Mil/Check Engine Light Test due to failure to complete all OBD self tests." Tony (one of the techs) said I just needed to drive the car for 40 or so miles and then it would be fine and to come back. They charged me $36.75 and stamped my invoice stating that I had one free retest within 30 days and that it would be an additional $8.25 more. So I drove it around and came back in two days later and had another tech (also very friendly) did the full retest which it passed, total cost $45 as quoted on the phone. Both times were done while I waited (and time spent was around 15 minutes each). I asked a lot of questions, they listened and patiently replied with knowledgeable answers. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had for a simple smog test. Carlos was abrasive and rude, and after my boyfriend inquired about wait time he was told to sit down. The situation then escalated to the point that Carlos (who instigated verbal and violent attacks) threatened my boyfriend with a metal bat, saying he would crack his head open, calling him a puta (bitch), and many other vulgar phrases. My boyfriend stood up for himself and got the manager, but nothing was done. I had 911 ready to go, but my boyfriend did not want to wait around to file a report since he would have been away from his office for too long. Luckily there was no physical damage done to my boyfriend or our car, but it is absolutely absurd service. This guy Carlos should be in jail. He is a down right thug. We ended up paying for the test and speaking to the manager. We told him that Carlos needs to be fired, and my bf reiterated that to him. Apparantly the manager told him that he is a union work so it "isn't possible to fire him". This was the absolute worst service experience I have ever had. I am on edge just thinking about it.
