This review is for the take-away specials introduced during the pandemic. Our family has made it a point to do whatever we can to help support our local businesses, in particular our favorite restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops etc. The first carry out order we placed was for Taco Tuesday. I was impressed with the system that Millwrights put in place, assuring us that social distancing guidelines are followed. Easy to order online, you pull into the restaurant and hit the Ring doorbell and let them know you are there. They provide you with a parking space # and deliver your order to your car. Easy, well thought out and quick. Our Taco Tuesday meal was very well packaged, Carnitas, Chicken, black beans, Spanish rice, guacamole, salsa, queso, lime creama , corn tortillas and chocolate cinnamon brownies, $59. The Carnitas and Chicken were good, nice flavor and cooked well. Black beans and Spanish Rice were unremarkable, not bad, just meh. Guacamole, salsa, queso and cream were very good. The corn tortillas were bad, they tasted raw and were pretty dry. Thankfully we had some flour tortillas in our pantry. The brownies were definitely House-made and they were awesome. The reason for the 3 stars, the portion sizes were far too small. The meal is supposed to be serve 4. We are not big eaters and are not the type of dinners who equate quantity with quality, but the scant amounts given for each item was noticeable. While we were not blown-away by the take-away, we were also not going to base our experience on this "out of the norm" situation and Millwrights giving their best shot at dealing with the pandemic. I wouldn't recommend Taco Tuesday. We did give Millwrights another opportunity, the Wednesday Chicken Parm Red Sauce Dinner. I'll post a separate review on this experience. read more

The open-air bridge location gives you front-row seats of the falls. You can not beat the scenery & ambiance and is what makes this restaurant unique. Food, drinks, and service were average. However, our hostess and bonus server Jodi (with trainee Quinn) was incredible. Our main server, Evelyn left a lot to be desired for service at such an establishment. She seemed very inconvenienced the entire meal and was condescending. Our sparkling water quickly became warm, flat water since we dined outside in the summer heat. I would recommend they put sparkling water bottles on ice at the table. We got a card for celebrating our anniversary which we noted on the reservation. It looks like they no longer provide a little treat for your special occasion. That's always the pièce de résistance for me to determine an average experience from an extraordinary experience. They have a disclaimer on the menu for the increase in menu prices. The tavern menu is a nice alternative. I recommend the restaurant for its unique open-air bridge setting only. Side note: I noticed a taco truck in the parking lot afterward with great views as well. read more

My boyfriend surprised me two years ago by taking us here to celebrate our 6th anniversary. The place is just breathtaking. We were seated by a window overlooking a gorgeous waterfall and because our anniversary is in DEC, the room was decorated for the holiday, and my favorite was the magnificent Christmas tree sitting as the centerpiece of a large table. As far as the meal went, well that was perfect too. We chose the tasting menu, with the wine pairing, each and every course was better than the next. I couldn't have asked to celebrate our anniversary in a more beautiful place. I think this year, I may have to request going back again for our 8th anniversary! read more

Always a great meal and great service. Chef Anderson and his crew are a great part of the community and his food is phenomenal. I first saw him on Top Chef Colorado while living in Denver and happened to move right near his restaurant when my wife and I moved back East. So glad we did! read more

Awesome as always. Great food, great service and the best dessert chef in my opinion.

We had a wonderful Easter lunch here for 11. The food was great. We had salmon, lamb, pasta and chicken amongst us. Everyone enjoyed. Our bartender Brian was within earshot and we had fun chatting with him. Super nice and attentive waitstaff. It's a formidable old building restored elegantly. Thank you for a terrific place to have a gathering. read more

Amazing food and great service. If you have an opportunity I highly recommend some of the special events they hold here.

We were devastated when Tyler Anderson, head chef at Pip's at the Copper Beech, decamped for Simsbury. But we knew we were in store for something special when he installed himself and his team in a historic grist mill on Hop Brook. After several attempts (plan ahead, it's a tough weekend reservation), we finally made it up there for an early Sunday dinner. And we were, in a word, wowed. From the johnny cake cornmeal biscuits with honey sesame butter to our final course of white chocolate mousse sauced with sour cherries, we were in foodie heaven. Tyler's vision, inspired New England cuisine, organic and sourced locally, is executed thoughtfully through dishes like the crispiest chicken (ever) served with a smokey side of barley and fava beans, to a lovely skate wing, and my rather large appetizer portion of chicken and dumplings (shredded roast chicken with handmade gnocchi sprinkled with crumbs of dehydrated carrot, yum!). But we didn't stop there! A gorgeous lobster appetizer (pictured) was a gastronomic delight: tender chunks of lobster, hints of grapefruit and crunchy bits of almond and celery. Don't pass up the clever smoked salmon rillette "for the table": served in a glass topped with creme fraiche and "everything" bagel sprinkles to shmear on toasted baguette. The room is spare and charming, with original antique beams and siding, black Windsor chairs, dramatic cherry blossom branches and a view of the waterfall. Next time I'll head downstairs to the stone-walled, cozy tavern for the bar menu of burgers, roast chicken or fish and chips with duck fat fries. This is a don't miss. read more

We went to Ta-que on a Saturday nite. Waited half an hour. When we ordered ribs, we were told they were sold out. Got pork belly, beans and cole slaw instead. Pork belly ok. Beans awful, cole slaw awful. Not going back. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. George Kirkutis read more

Millwright's is one of my favorite restaurants in Connecticut I visit every time I am on the east coast and it is always a sublime experience! Recently I made a reservation for my sister and called ahead to buy a round of drinks and the next day was thrilled to hear my sister and brother-in-law were treated like VIPs the entire night and couldn't stop raving about their experience: beautiful table, excellent chef's tasting menu, gracious service, balanced cocktails and just a wonderful experience all around...so thank you dear Millwright's from afar for treating my family so hospitably till we meet again! read more

I love this place. When my husband made reservations, he noted that I was diabetic. The waiter knew this ahead of time, advised he knew of my diet restrictions & what foods were available to me. The pastry chef even created a sugar free, low carb dessert! While most restaurants are offering gluten free options, most do not cater to the population that needs to avoid sugar. In restaurants I always ask if any of the desserts are sugar free & they look at me like I have 2 heads. The food is eclectic & very good, though a little on the high side. Have not had a bad meal yet. read more

Wanted to love it. We've eaten at the Tavern and the main dining room. Scallops were undercooked for the first visit to dining room and the tavern burger just didn't have anything special to offer, unfortunately overcooked and lacking overall flavor. We visited the very busy facility this week. We had to eat in the tavern since we did not have reservations. We got the classic and the tavern burgers with fries and a salad. Had a very lovely and tasty date night dinner here this weekend. It was the first time I have been to Millwrights, and likely not the last! Millwrights is located in a 17th century mill that has been lovingly restored. The rustic, wood-beamed interior overlooks the small dam/waterfall just outside. There are many white-linen tables, and the kitchen has a large open window at the end of the dining space (I personally love being able to see the kitchen action!). The staff are welcoming and friendly, as is the space. My boyfriend and I started with cocktails - I had a sazerac and he opted for the old-fashioned. My sazerac was perfect, and very, very strong. The old-fashioned was one of the best and smoothest old-fashioneds I've ever tried. We then moved onto a small starter to share, the smoked-salmon rillettes, sprinkled with everything seasoning like a riff on bagels and lox - small, but yummy and very shareable. We were also brought biscuits (they seemed to be a biscuit/cornbread hybrid) with a delicious honey-infused butter, and a small amuse-bouche that involved popcorn and something that tasted like a gingersnap. For the main course, my boyfriend ordered quail. The quail dish had two small quail - they were tasty but nothing extraordinary. He also ordered a side of potatoes that were covered in the most delicious herb aioli I've ever had. I had the same potatoes with my dish, a large portion of slow-cooked shortrib. I'm not a big meat eater, but this was one of the best dishes I've had in recent memory. I highly, highly recommend the shortrib - they just added it to the menu which they change seasonally so get it while you can! It is the perfect fall/winter dish. Instead of dessert (we were stuffed), we opted for espresso. Millwrights gets their coffee and espresso from Giv Coffee out of Canton - great quality beans which made for the perfect cup and end to a great meal. For a more high-end meal that was quite enjoyable, the prices are very fair. I'd love to go back here seasonally as they change up the menu, and to try the tavern downstairs! read more

Quaint restaurant and tavern in the Connecticut countryside with a view of a waterfall. The restaurant is a James Beard award nominee for several years running and I can see why. I had the corn chowder that the waitress recommended. It came as a two part with some lobster meat and a crab cake which the waitress poured a hot sweet corn chowder over. The sweet corn paired nicely with the lobster and crab flavor. I then got to savor the brisket tacos with a sriracha aioli as a bbq substitute. The brisket was perfectly cooked and had a strong beef taste that was amplified by the aioli. I was very impressed and can understand why they have been nominated. read more

We went to millwrights tonight to celebrate our anniversary and it did not disappoint! Every small detail was taken care of and our server Ron was excellent and we want to go back just to see him again! I was amazed at the service and that every single employee knew about every course and could pitch in where needed. All of the servers and helpers were expertly trained. The food, of course, was amazing! We did the seven course chef's tasting menu. The portions were quite large and we were very full by the time we left, but we couldn't help but eat every last morsel. The lobster and the tapioca were our favorites and we loved trying cuisines that we would have never thought to order. We felt like royalty the whole night and were just so impressed with the overall experience. It was also nice that we never felt rushed or like we were just another table that needed to be turned. We can't wait to go back to celebrate other events!! read more

Tonight was our first time visiting Millwrights. We dined in the tavern. We were very lucky to get Brian as a waiter. He took extra time to explain the menu and his favorite options to make sure we had a great experience. Brian remained attentive throughout our service. We ordered the classic tavern burger and the chicken tacos. Both were phenomenal, and full of flavor. We had two desserts, the cheesecake brûlée and graham pudding cake. Again, the flavors were outstanding. Overall, it was an excellent experience. The food and service were exceptional. I can't wait to go back! read more

Went here for dinner. Waiter was rushed and pushy. Food was mediocre at best for the price.

This is for Ta que, an excellent outdoor dining experience that conflates the informality of eating from a food truck with the fun of good food that is served quickly and efficiently. Great service and staff, whether you're doing take out or dining in. I highly recommend, but remember that tacos are NOT little food. I did the "3-tacos-and-2-sides" meal and was stuffed. read more

This is one of those places I've heard people rave about, telling me I should go there, and then I eat there and I'm sorely disappointed. The ambience is really cute - two levels, the first being the main dining area and the lower level the tavern area. While they have two separate menus for each floor, they let you mix and match different items from each menu. You also can't forget about the waterfall. It's pretty epic. We were seated in a great area - with a big window overlooking the waterfall. The waitress came by and greeted us with a pleasant demeanor. Then She took our drink orders and never came back. We ordered the cheese plate and french fries to start. Both were satisfactory, nothing special. Next, all of my friends ordered the chicken based on my friend's recommendation that the chicken was the "juiciest they've ever had" and I got the new york strip. Every chicken dinner was dry and flavorless. My steak was a overcooked, and included a strange side of creamed spinach stuffed inside a white onion. Nothing melded together. On top of that, as I mentioned above, the waitress was scarce and didn't come to our table until we called her attention. The whole experience was just disappointing, and I feel like I'm missing something after reading all of these four star reviews. I don't mind paying money for a good meal, but when it's this disappointing, I wish I stayed at home. I could have made a better meal for a fraction of the cost. read more

Great atmosphere, great service (Melanie was a fantastic server) and top-notch cuisine (and wine!). This restaurant hits all the marks for a wannabe foodie like myself. I highly recommend the tasting menu. Each dish was super fresh, innovative, and delicious. Tried my first oyster- it was awesome. I wanted more. The pressed carrots...seriously the best carrots I've ever eaten. I'm still dreaming about them! The steak tartare was super flavorful too. My husband, who is a trained chef, typically won't eat lamb out, but says chef Tyler's lamb has restored his faith. It was super tender. Also loved all the little extras like fresh biscuits and truffles. It's definitely a special occasion place for us, but one we will be visiting again! read more

Millwright's - Romantic atmosphere. - New American Near Me - Simsbury, Connecticut

Millwright: it started out so well, and then, well, it just went down hill... This rating is for two parts: wine class and then tavern. We arrived for the wine class and had an excellent time. The sommelier was informative, irreverent, and funny as all get out. Excellent wine, great people, and I learned a lot. Highlight of the evening when the sommelier described the last wine we were tasting as hot, heavy, passionate, a "bend you over the table" type of wine. I nearly hurt myself laughing so hard the entire time. 5 stars all the way. We then went down to the tavern where we ordered burgers and then I proceeded to hear the bartender making loud jokes about "twattering". I have never, ever, EVER, been exposed to this level of obnoxious misogynistic behavior. Not at most bars would I expect it, nor would I expect it at a place where their burgers are $15. I voiced my displeasure to the bartender and he seemed pissed that I was pissed. Yes, you sexist jerk, I don't think it's funny that you use derogative terms for female genitalia. 0 stars for the jerk behind the bar alone. Total disconnect with the service here. I have read several other reviews that have noted that they have had serious hiccups in service. I think this is more than a hiccup. This is a major hiring mistake. Either muzzle the bartender or replace him with someone who is able to present himself professionally. read more

We ordered the tasting menu, hoping to learn all the great things that Millwrights had to offer, but instead, course after course, we sat back waiting to be blown away, and it just never came. Long story short, we did not feel that the food had any feeling, story, inventiveness, creativity or personality. We did not get any sensory experiences. There was nothing visually stimulating or aromatically enticing. What we did get was a lot of food that was, for the most part, well conceived and well executed. The food did not tell us much, if anything, about the chef, his inspiration and his cuisine -- that is unless the takeaway was supposed to be: well executed, standard fare. Bottom line: there was no "wow" factor. Maybe this was a spot where we should have checked our expectations. I mean, this could have been a four star review if we came in thinking that this was Firebox's country brother, but we didn't. We came in expecting to be blown away and were left consistently underwhelmed. The chilled, shaved fois gras with the rhubarb consomme and strawberry was the one "out of the box" dish that we were served, and I did not think it worked very well. Halibut was halibut. I did appreciate how well perfectly it was cooked and the savory truffle sauce was nice. The lamb was lamb. The onion jam with preserved meyer lemons was so good we had to ask our server more about it. I was happy to see the lamb served two ways with the tenderloin and a sausage. No complaints about the order of the courses. It started light and finished strong. The final dessert was awesome: a multi-layer, multi-flavor, miniature take on a Take-5 bar. The old fashioneds were particularly good (I personally thanked the bartender for those). Overall, however, I was left with the impression that this place was good but not great, and now that we've had a taste of what the menu had to offer, I don't see much of a reason to go back. read more

I ate here on Friday, December 21, 2012. After conferring with the other members of my dining party, we were not that impressed, especially given the prices. The setting is a historic grist mill in Simsbury, and they have done a nice job with the interior. The wait staff were pleasant, although at times, they were almost overbearing. There seemed to be so many of them swarming around in blue shirts, and different staff attending to our table for different items. We ordered some appetizers (oysters & cheese tray) then soups and salads, and then our entrees. The local cheese tray was very small, for $12, and there wasn't even enough of the crackers/bread to satisfy the meager portions of cheese. Also, they served some small homemade square biscuits, which was supposed to constitute the complimentary bread, but they gave each person one, and then took the basket away. Kind of cheap in my opinion. The honey butter was tasty though. For the main course, I had the Oysters, as well as two other members of my party. There was a miso foam, as well as carrots and bacon. There were only 3 scallops, and everyone agreed that the saltiness of the Bacon overwhelmed the other flavors. Another member ordered the Beef Duo, medium rare. One of the items was cold, which would be rare, but not medium rare. My Grandmother, who is 90, went home hungry, which is not a great sign for the portion size. If you can't fill up a 90 year old at these prices, then there is a problem. In summary, the atmosphere here is excellent, and the Tavern might be a better value than the regular dining area, but if you are going to spend this kind of money on a nice dinner, go to another place. On20 in Hartford has impeccable service and food that outshines Millwrights in every way, or any of the Max Restaurants would offer a better meal. In Simsbury, I haven't been to the Mill at 2T, but many people on Yelp suggest it too. read more

We had our wedding reception last night at Millwrights and it was amazing!! We used the intimate loft where the staff took amazing care of us! Jeff, The maitre'd, called us multiple times to ensure we were pleased with the menu and set up. When we arrived it looked even more beautiful than we expected. There was a private bar in the loft with 2 great waitstaff to help us for the night. Ron and Ashley took care of us and addressed us by name all night. As a special treat my groom and I were allowed to go into the kitchen to meet Tyler Anderson himself!!!!!!! We were thrilled!!!!! The atmosphere and ambiance alone was enough to make us happy, but the hospitality and extra details had us on cloud 9. All of our guests admitted it was one of the best meals they had ever had at a wedding. Thank you Millwrights for making our wedding day magical!!! :) read more

It's the little things, isn't it? One little thing can completely alter the experience of a patron at a restaurant. Especially a place like Millwrights, which prides itself on peerless ambiance, creativity, and service. I came here with my girlfriend on Sunday evening with a $250 gift certificate in tow. Normally, I'm not one to recklessly spend money unless I've already been into the vodka, but we figured, hey, why not, right? Let's get crazy. So we got the 7-course tasting menu (at a bargain of 75 pp), and even decided to get crazy with the 45 pp beverage pairing. Which means each course comes with its own wine, and they even offer to refill it between courses in case you were becoming dangerously sober. First of all, the service is excellent. Our waitress was attentive without being overbearing, and explained each dish and wine pairing, which is good, cause I sure as hell wouldn't know. Though I'll say she used the word "crescendo" a comical amount of times. The food itself was unbelievable. It'd be difficult to suggest highlights because everything was exquisite. Perhaps my favorite was the savory foie gras, which I typically don't love, but man oh man was it good. But so was everything. The cooked carrots, the black truffle ravioli, the quail legs, the clam chowder-inspired sole. Everything was lovely. The dishes themselves were rather small, but that's to be expected with a restaurant like this. I must say I did not leave hungry. However, one thing did leave a bad taste in my mouth, and the reason I docked a star. Before dessert started, the waitress offered us coffee, which comes in these little mini French presses -- very adorable. The coffee was excellent. But here's the thing -- it turns out a cup of coffee isn't included in your $75.00 7-course tasting, nor in your $45.00 beverage pairing. That's right, for $120.00 per person tasting menu, they still nickle-and-dime you for 4 bucks a coffee. Which they don't mention when they offer you coffee before dessert. Maybe I should've known? "Oh, of course the tasting/beverage menu only includes food/wine and not coffee." I dunno. I'm not that classy. But when my waitress casually offers me a coffee before dessert, I just stupidly assume my 120 bucks covers it. I guess not. Oh well. I hope the 4 bucks was worth it. read more

We had planned a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner and based on a previous experience as well as reviews we expected something special. We were soundly disappointed. The first thing we noticed was how dirty the windows were. What a shame since they are floor to ceiling and provide a lovely view of the outside - a highlight of the restaurants ambiance. The food was lukewarm, way too salty and dry. It seemed like it was mass produced, made the day before and divided into very small portions. There was nothing to recommend any dish. We will not be returning. read more

1.) Just to warm you up: Over and over again I have heard only great stories about this place. Joe C. from the Greater Hartford area is a frequent flyer and swears by this place. Not only has he been here, he has been to the Restaurant On20 (Hartford) and used them as the standard for fine dining. Considering my stomach and palette are virgins to this kind of food intercourse, I knew I had to get broken in. 2.) What your eyes may see: Located in Simsbury, the restaurant is located in a more rural than suburban area. The roof top itself looked pretty interesting, and from what I recall this place hosts not only a restaurant and bar but a hotel/inn or a condominium? Inside this place gave me a reminder of Dakota's restaurant, almost a log cabin feel, minus the deer heads hanging near the ceiling. Outside had a nice river with waterfall, which definitely gave me the feeling that this place to use to be an old mill. Cool. The staff was arranged in an orderly fashion, with the servers, bus boy/girls, food runners all waiting patiently in certain pockets of the restaurant. From afar you can see the kitchen. I must say from the kitchen, bar and wait staff, they all looked like a rather young bunch of people. Probably very early 20 somethings. Wait staff dressed in blue button ups, bartender dressed in black vest with button up and tie and kitchen dressed in traditional white chef aprons. 3.) Food and drink: My friend and I had the 7 (or 9) course meal with wine pairing. Fortunately my friend has a better memory than I do, but I can say that I remembered components from each plate. Here was the order: a.) Two balls that were breaded like donuts on the outside but had vegetables (and another thing I forgot) laying on top of two soup ladles of rice. Those were good, those were teasingly good. b.) Creamy soup that was in espresso sized cups, sip it in the same manner. This was good, this was teasingly good. Creamy and sweet. c.) Oysters. Not my type of stuff, but it tasted good. d.) Cornbread with butter. The butter is made there, and tasted so flavorful that I wanted to eat it on its own. I never would eat butter on its own, but it was just that flavorful that I put a mound of it on the sweet bread. e.) Marinated beets in yogurt, rye crumble and herbs. Wow, the combination of all of that was tasty and complex. 6.) Scallops with a side of crisped bacon, potato and kohlrabi hash, and old bay vinaigrette. Tasty. I loved it. The scallops were cooked wonderfully. f.) Cured foie gras. Now this was my first time being able to see and taste what foie gras was. It came with tart cherry preserves pureed and served with brown bread. To be honest, I could eat this for breakfast. This is like the wealthy man's cream cheese. Never knew foie gras (duck liver) would taste so good, *dunt dunt* so good *dunt*.............It was so yum! g.) Stuffed quail leg. It came with a brioche stuffing, foie gras jus. It reminded me of thanksgiving dinner with stove top stuffing. (Now I'm trying to break it down to the people who aren't really use to eating this stuff. Call me Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods or Anthony Bourdain. Sometimes people need that kind of comparison if they haven't eaten like this). h.) Lamb loin - served with creamed leeks, prune jus and roasted potatoes. I love lamb! *do you really love lamb or are you just saying you love lamb?* .....I love lamb! (sorry for the Anchor Man rendition of "I love Lamb (lamp)"). i.) Ice cream - which was used as palette cleaners. The ice cream was with lemon and thyme. A great way to segue into dessert after eating meats. The cones were very sweet, but the ice cream was just right. Interesting with the thyme in them, but there were great. j.) One of the last was an espresso ice cream, with a biscotti (or Italian cookie), with another slab of ice cream, with a side of blood oranges and dark chocolate sauce. What a great finisher! k.) Raspberry macaroons for the table. This was to say, here is another teaser just to make you toss and turn in your bed at night. Millwrights!!!! I need you!!!! This place will have you on the streets, selling your household items just for you to get another hit of that drug, and that drug is Millwrights food! l.) As for drink - I remember having sparkling wine, some reds and whites from France and such, I remember one was a chardonnay, pinot noir, a merlot-like wine and a beer from a can poured into a tall, fat, wine glass. The server was able to tell me that that awesome can of beer was an IPA from the same company that makes CHUBB and DALE's Pale Ale. Who knew that good beer could come in a can! 4.) Service: From the moment I placed the reservations to the moment my stomach was full and in my car, the service was phenomenal! The staff were super attentive, the timing of when each course came out was impeccable. My one hang up was the timing of drinks with meals. Sometimes I was left uninformed. 5.) Impressions: My taste buds are indebted to this place read more

I'm all about the senses and exposing myself to experiences that truly push the limit of sensual pleasure. Having done my proper homework by reading up on the numerous 5-star Yelp reviews and NY Times review, I knew this humble establishment had the potential for a serious epicurean experience. And boy did this birthday dinner not disappoint. Millwrights, I love you. We were fortunate enough to get a window table with a front row seat of the waterfall, and let me mention that our table could have easily sat four, but they probably made special accommodations for us being that we mentioned it was my birthday. And on that bday note, the first words out of our waitress' mouth was "Happy Birthday." Nicely done, Millwrights. She, along with every one of their staff, was extremely friendly and professional. We inquired about the chef's tasting menu, and was told that it was up to the chef to decide. She asked about our food allergies and we told her we really wanted to try the foie gras and oysters, and we got them both! Millwrights, I love you. OK, enough blabbing about nonfood related topics. Let's get to to the good stuff!! Sorry, one last nonfood comment. I appreciated how clean the table and each plate was. They give you new silverware for each course and each plate is white so as to provide minimal visual distraction to the ingredients of each expertly plated dish. The artistic ability and refined technique truly shined through with each course. Here's what we were served and I apologize in advance for not remembering or inaccurately describing all the fantastic ingredients: 1. Amuse bouche of oysters served on a circular sheet of ice and bed of fresh dill sprouts with a dollop of light mignonette that resembled mayonnaise. Bright, refreshing and briny. Juicy and plump with a hearty mouth-feel. Everything you'd ever want out of a raw mollusk. 2. A 2nd amuse bouche of a foamy, watercress soup and a fried risotto ball. Poured into a small soup bowl right at the table. A real palette awakener, but subtle enough to just tease your taste buds and give them a wake up call to be on high alert, because "it only gets better" as per the head Captain Brent. Fact. 3. Our first course (wait, this is the first course?!) was a simple and refined peeky-toe crab, garnished with a crunchy, thin, wafer-like disc (almond?), thin slices of leeks and fresh sprigs of dill. Such great contrast between the softness and flakiness of the crab meat with the crunchy wafer and crisp pieces of lightly dressed leeks. An absolute must for you crab lovers out there. 4. Marinated beet salad, served with a rye crumble and cumin yogurt. A beautiful mix of red and golden beets, with a gentle touch of tartness coming from the rye crumble and yogurt. Cumin is such a genius touch here and could readily be tasted with each bite. 5. A lone, perfectly seared scallop with endive, pistachio and grapefruit hollandaise sauce. My wife often orders scallops when we go out and this was the best she's ever had. The hollandaise sauce was other worldly good, not too rich or overpowering, but absolutely perfectly executed. This dish came with a flaky, square piece of bread and some house-made butter with sesame. The butter was to die for and room temperature to facilitate spreading. Extremely satisfying as well and again, showing expert technique and restrain in creating a not-too-rich, not-too-fatty butter. 6. Cured foie gras torchon on a circular brown bread with a tart cherry puree. This foie came straight from the heavens. So rich, so buttery, so fatty, so melt-in-your-mouth good. Something tasting this good has to be a sin. Straight up. 7. Quail stuffed with a herbed chicken sausage, endive and quail jus. Savory, crisp outer coating to the quail. A mini-chicken never tasted so good. 8. Lamb loin, perfectly rare, served on a bed of polenta with an onion gratin. No gaminess to the lamb at all, just pure succulent and savory bliss. 9. Sorbet palette cleanser on homemade waffle cones 10. A 3-layer flourless brownie based slice of desserty deliciousness. I was so food coma induced at this point that while I asked the waitress what was in it, my small brain has since forgotten. 11. A birthday candle in nougat filled with mixed nuts. I often found myself closing my eyes to focus on the intense flavors and truly spiritual experience that only comes with dining in such a fine establishment that is Millwrights. You can taste Chef Tyler Anderson's passion, innovation and creativity with each succulent bite and feel the entire staff's passion for service with each interpersonal interaction. If you're looking for one of the best, if not THE BEST, dining experience in CT, look no further. Millwrights is the place. Dismiss all negative review and form your own opinion. Okay, so we order the beef tartare, which was a generous portion, it comes with 3 pieces of toast, so we ask for more toast to finish the tartare. You would think we were asking them to close the restaurant down, I mean how hard could it be? First it takes forever to get anything at all and then they send out some crappy store bought crackers out rather then toast. What self respecting professional kitchen would do that? I 'm Highly disappointed, I would expect better from such a highly reviewed restaurant. read more

I thought Mill at 2T was the Hartford area's best of the best, but Millwrights has since took over that spot. Although it's not located in the most convenient location if you're coming from Hartford, the twists and turns you have to maneuver through ultimately makes the reward that much sweeter. Service was top notch at Millwrights - everyone from the hostess to the sommelier to the waiters / waitresses were professional and(!) had great personalities. This is a perfect combo. It was also the Lady of the Table's belated birthday, and the restaurant was more than happy to add a little something to make it more special. The ambiance is what you'd expect from a higher end restaurant, but the atmosphere didn't stink of pretentiousness. It was relaxed, warm, and inviting. The waterfall right along the restaurant adds another unique dimension to an establishment that already has character in its own right. Food was equally on par with the service. We had the chef's tasting menu + pairing. This consisted of seven savory dishes, two sweets, and a couple of amuse-bouches. Each dish was crafted with care and it showed. The plating was beautiful, and Chef Anderson did not sacrifice taste for presentation. Even some of the mildly deconstructed plates did not lose the flavors of their constructed selves. From what I gathered around our table, the wine / beer pairings went well with each dish, and served only to tease out the more subtle flavors of the locally sourced ingredients. read more

My hubby took me here for Valentine's day dinner, and we were blown away. The ambiance was wonderful! It's a rustic looking mill, that was beautifully and tastefully decorated. The food was outstanding, and the kitchen perfectly timed out each course. Our server, Ron, was friendly, attentive, and incredibly informative. We loved it so much, that we are already planning to return as soon as we can to try out their regular menu (we live almost an hour away). read more

As Simsbury residents, we really, really want to like this place, but we just can't say it measures up. This is specific to the bar. First, the bartender is AMAZING, but that's where it ends. The service coming from the kitchen just doesn't measure up. This last time we were there on a Friday evening and the bar was busy, but not crazy, but it took over an hour to get our food! The bartender even personally went back to the kitchen to check. We finally told her to cancel our order. The manager, who was very nice, then showed up and comped us for the food, but who cares. That was our fourth visit and each time we say let's give it one more try. It's in Simsbury, we live nearby, now?... We're done... Oh, by the way, my order? A simple burger... Go somewhere else folks, I think they are paying off the James Beard judges because we just don't see it. read more

Enjoyed happy hour prior to an event. We always wanted to try Millwrights and will have to come back for a sit down dinner . We meet our friends in the down stairs tavern and ordered off the happy hour menu. What a great spot . We ordered a dozen oysters , 8 chicken wings for $1 each. These we very plump and cooked perfectly in a sherry glaze. Biggest wings I ever saw. We also had an order of chicharones . Which are fried pork served with a spiced aioli. We each ordered some happy hour beer special 7 oz miller high life " the champagne of beers " they serve it in a champagne glass. Great presentation . It even tasted better than I remember miller beer being. Def will be back for a full dinner experience. Millwrights has a great rep and we'll know chef. . read more
